We are not attacking anyone, hell I wear makeup and skirts 'cause it makes me happy, which doesn't mean I go around telling everyone they should as well. Btw I don't think femininity/masculinity is a social construct at it's core, but the superficial things that usually define it are (being slim/small/curvy/whatever, wearing make up, having long hair...).
Brooke Kuipers No it’s not, it can be “female” but not feminine. Look up the etymology of the word feminine. If a man/male is characterized as having “effeminate” qualifies, it is because he has a “softness” or a “delicate” way about him that is ascribed to a “feminine” woman.

@愛HiImAmii Just like anime, K-pop is likely to stay as another form of Asian subculture (after the hype/craze dies down). Very few artists will successfully crossover to the Western mainstream.
13:09 i understand that "people judge people by their looks" but look at the clear statistical evidence that much more women go under plastic surgery than men. is it because more men are more beautiful than women? no. one cannot deny that there isnt a social structure that pressurizes women that she has to look beautiful and perfect and should fit into the standards in order to live a good/better life. most men get jobs, have a relationship just fine without having to get double eyelids or a slim V shaped jawline surgeries. what's expected of men and women are clearly different. that is inequality. This is why we "escape the corset"
Men are bind by their sexuality and prefer hot young women, and women know this and use this. It's that simple. Looking prettier, even if it's fake, gives women a big advantage when it comes to competing for desirable men. Women also want physically attractive men, but they prefer wealthy men because that means security for them and their offspring. It's not just 'a social construct', it's our nature mixed with consumerist mindset.
Men and women both equally (or at least to the extent that it matters) have unrealistic standards for what they must do or be to be attractive. Having to be rich is not any less oppressive than having to be pretty. We should address both.
카보아도 it’s because as women, we fall in love with a mans heart. Not to say we don’t appreciate a nice body , and handsome face. But love for us is a bit deeper. Men fall In love with beauty before they fall in love with the person. I think that’s ONE reason why men have it a lot easier. Here in the U.S an ugly man that looks like an ogre can snag a woman that looks like a model. And women here still compete with other women for those men!

She made a good point with the school uniform ad. Clearly the message of the ad is that society dictates that comfort is not a consideration extended to females.
And comfort is not a consideration extended to males. Look, men are forced to military conscription for 2 years with 10% of minimum wage, while women who are totally exempt pay no taxes to support them and go get college education and start careers earlier.

@freshly squeezed That's a really good point. Ok bear with me: How about making gender mostly irrelevant for society? I mean, gender only _really_ matters in a few cases anyway (like some sports, medical care, and of course reproduction). So, gender could _in theory_ be irrelevant for clothes, hairstyle, manners, careers, etc. That way, any choice about those things would be appropriate and acceptable regardless of gender and the whole femenine/masculine distinction would be irrelevant. I know it would be really hard, but just considering _"anything a woman does"_ as femenine and _"anything a man does"_ as masculine could be a start 🤷♂️
The doctor is a hypocrite. The "outside beauty is important" but he never had any surgeries? Why? I guess because he doesn't get judged on the beauty over everything he does.

I am a person who likes to wear shirts 3 times larger than my size and jeans wide enough to fit the country on one day and wear sparkly dresses and heels with butterflies on them on other day. I also have cut my hair down to my ear and grown them down to my waist. I also LOVE make up, I love putting glitter on my eyes and picking what lipstick I’m going to wear but I also LOVE taking them off, on days that I want some down time and on days that I’m out in the middle of nowhere, volunteering. The thought of looking ‘feminine’ never crossed my mind because what I do with my body and the clothes I wear was never really gender specific. I do it because I love it or want too not because that’s what society expects of me.
Same here! I love fashion but I go out in sweats most of the time. I like to dress up but don't wear make up on the daily. We shouldn't be forced to adhere to beauty standards.
Exactly what I wanted to say. Summed up perfectly. Also I thought make up is supposed to enhance your features, not hide imperfections. At least that how I use it

@Mohammed-Bashir Adewale but in Africa they have insecurities too. They bleach their skin to look white. No one is better than another. Every society has its social and political problems we just need healthy ways to solve them without going to the extreme.

Seems as if they're saying men are better so they would rather be like men. Like ancient Europe under Paganism , female was seen as important, and also Asia has a philosophy where male and female energies like yin and yang are important.
Money is not the problem. But economic improvement would be best if goes side by side with cultural improvement. And investing on culture is on the government. Private sectors just think about money nothing els, so it is on government.
They have progressed economically, but seeing how they treat their own and how they look down at others shows that their mindset and character have not yet progressed..
i dont see anything wrong with wanting to look pretty and feeling confident. i just think that confidence should come from a placee that isnt soo shallow. unfortunatly we live in a world where looks matter a lot and people are mean , so to adapt we do things like wear makeup. I agree with what the surgen is saying here.12:03 but i dont agree with surgery.
I absolutely stand by the freedom of choice. Men and women. And I also agree that this is not a problem that is unique to Korean. But the outright discrimination that everyone feel they can subject people to because of the way they look is not right. I live in London, I am sure people are judgemental here but they would never dare to be so blatant about it. It is not an acceptable behaviour in this society. I hear things like in Korean school girls are being weighed on a regular basis and is told to go in a diet if they are over the prescribed range. How humiliating is that? These are the things that chip away confidence. So it’s not so easy to have the confidence to make choices other than conforming.

That doctor either disingenuously or ignorantly made so many fallacious arguments. I rather suspect the first since it was in his interest to do so. Sure individual women have the right to choose what to do for themselves, and shouldn't as individuals be faulted or discriminated against for having plastic surgery (though one might try dissuade them beforehand) anymore than one should discriminate against those who disagree with the whole beauty standard as the only definition as "feminine". That isn't the issue. It is a social issue, a social problem, that so many women feel the need to do so that should be discussed as a problem. That so many women are not deemed by themselves or by society at large, pretty enough to fit that standard that they must "fix" themselves by having plastic surgery, and that's just sick. Second he's just wrong about the Kardashians. Sure some of their appeal comes from their looks, but also from their lifestyle and RL soap opera behavior that some people enjoy following. Yet at the same time as many if not more dislike them exactly for those same reasons. As superficial people who have nothing whatsoever to offer the world. And despite people "almost"?? (isn't that important?) booing Susan Boyle, she ended up being very recognized for her incredible talent and a household name a great deal more respected than any Kardashian. I won't say how we look can't be a factor socially, but only a very superficial society would put that much stress on it. While this is a growing problem just about everywhere due to marketing that especially uses impossible beauty images (touched up photos) to sell products and strike at women's insecurities, it is up to societies to counterbalance that trend with the values it holds. Like women are not their looks anymore than men are. Which brings to the last, if men feel that somehow women not running around going to extreme lengths to be "feminine" but rather just being as they want is somehow an attack on men, they are absurd. Are men then attacking women when they don't cut their hair or wear an old t-shirt, shorts, and old shoes because they're comfortable?
There’s a lack of diversity in the Korean society. K-POP is pretty much a factory that pumps out idols who look identical to each other. They need to start celebrating a broader range of beauty
they've tried but koreans are slow to accepting a new beauty standard, and the idols would get hate on how ugly they were, for not looking like the typical standard
haras ijezda exactly, take ITZY's chaeryeong. she's considered a minor in south korea yet even that doesnt stop people from shitting on her appearance.
13:43 I laughed so hard at this, same with average size on pockets on women jeans compared to male. Women not needing bags with all important belongings also could cut down crime rates because a womens bag is an "easy target"
I like bags better. I dont like sitting on things or forgetting stuff in my pants before washing or having bulges. I want a phone and key pocket for all my sports pants though.
The beauty standard in Korea is sad and tragic because oftentimes it's a hole that is continuously dug from where it becomes extremely difficult to come out from. I have observed closely enough because I live in Seoul and have been studying it. Escape the corset movement is not a fly-by run of the mill talk that some people talk about feminist movement these days elsewhere in the world. The young feminists of the Korean society is personal, hard and often isolating but they do it for the themselves and for the future. That being said, make-up in Korea for women is mostly done for self-preservation, not all girls and women confronts the bondage often tied to beauty standard directly like others. We can applaud the discussion because it comes with such price for all of them.

There's a duality for me when it comes to beauty. Sometimes I enjoy putting on a dress, wearing makeup, expressing myself with my clothes, hair and makeup. Sometimes I want to be completely natural. Let my curls out and free. Wear no makeup. Wear comfortable but still stylish clothes. I enjoy wearing stylish clothes. I don't follow all the trends. I wear what speaks to me. I think I'm in a grey area. I go back and forth btwn the two sides bc both sides are part of me. I also go back and forth btwn having short, medium and long hair.
FoodButter There is no problem with expressing an individual’s standard of beauty from the way they dress and even how they look (as long when they look decent and clean, done with basic hygienic care and grooming). There are people who thinks that certain feminine qualities are beautiful or maybe suit them better than other qualities so they decide to dress in that way. The same goes with the appeal masculine qualities in fashion. In many cases and contexts there should have no problem in that, and they should feel minimal external pressure to make that decision. The point is, one should have choices available at hand to make their decisions, and they should be confident with making that decision too. I grow up in an East Asian society, but I seldom feel the pressure to dress to appeal other people, at least not as extreme as what the Korean society the video portrays. We’re fortunate enough to be able to make our choices with minimal (external) pressure, so let’s embrace it and spread the joy for being able to dress according to our will!
Omg the feminist with short hair and her dog. I'm in love with her. I'll pray she stays strong, safe from harm, and true to herself. As someone living in Korea, the way most medias frame Korea is wrong. They frame Korea as an extremely superficial country, while in fact, its not that superficial. No one will get bothered in Korea for having a bad fashion style, or by having naked face, by being overweight, and so forth. Furthermore, for the plastic surgery, the statistic well known among people, which states that 1 out of 3 Koreans go through plastic surgery, the stat is actually significantly manipulated, as it is hugely inflated since it also includes the surgeries of foreigners, such as Japanese, Chinese, Americans, etc. For instance, every year about four hundred fifty thousand foreigners visit Korea with the sole intention to undergo plastic surgery, and this isn't the total surgeries held by foreigners, but plastic surgeries held every year by foreigners. Ultimately, leading to greatly inflate the stat from its factual stats, which solely includes Koreans. Imagine that much amount of surgeries add up to the stats of Korea. Not saying that what the medias portray Korea is incorrect, what I am saying is that they greatly exaggerate and overemphasize issues, and foreigners who only meet Korea through unreliable medias will get "brainwashed" or have a greatly mistakeb misconception in Korea, even before actually visiting there. Go visit, if the issues seem true and unexaggerated, then leave.

This movent doest look/sound like Radical feminism to me. Just looks like women trying to connect more to themselves rather than forcing themselves into a box of expection.
Korea should appreciate this group because they are saving your society. Korea has allowed themselves to be pressured by marketing strategy of the beauty companies. The beauty inside of us is more important than the outside beauty.
I'm so glad that the Philippines is really moving forward into the idea of beauty inclusivity. I remember when one whitening soap had an advertisement on TV saying that having white skin is better by literally illustrating it against having a darker skin (which filipinos mostly have), it really went infamous on social media. Many celebreties hated it too, and as I remember, the TV ad was eventually banned from airing.
This is why Philippines wins in beauty pageants, we love our genuine and authentic girls and not being so tight with beauty standards. Korea has sent so many beautiful ladies but they lack personality. They think being beautiful can replace personality. Honey Lee was the last lady they sent that had a very bright personality. Colorism still exist in the Philippines though but it is starting to be challenged by tan celebs that are outspoken and well respected in their body of work.

Brooke Kuipers No it’s not, it can be “female” but not feminine. Look up the etymology of the word feminine. If a man/male is characterized as having “effeminate” qualifies, it is because he has a “softness” or a “delicate” way about him that is ascribed to a “feminine” woman.

A mans plastic surgery is his bank account. Can we also “escape the income”?
Men and women both equally (or at least to the extent that it matters) have unrealistic standards for what they must do or be to be attractive. Having to be rich is not any less oppressive than having to be pretty. We should address both.
카보아도 it’s because as women, we fall in love with a mans heart. Not to say we don’t appreciate a nice body , and handsome face. But love for us is a bit deeper. Men fall
In love with beauty before they fall in love with the person. I think that’s ONE reason why men have it a lot easier. Here in the U.S an ugly man that looks like an ogre can snag a woman that looks like a model. And women here still compete with other women for those men!

We're mostly all like that. We have glamour days and sporty days. It's a good balance.

Omg the feminist with short hair and her dog. I'm in love with her. I'll pray she stays strong, safe from harm, and true to herself.
My feelings about myself change often, as frequently as one year to the next. Sometimes, I want to strip myself of all artifice. Other times, I want to look as potently sexy and feminine as possible. Most times, it's somewhere in the middle. A woman has all those different facets inside of her. She should have the freedom to choose for herself at any given time without fear ❤️

I read of an actor who's married to a beautiful actress even announced their baby girl's arrival with " she has double eyelids like her mom!"

이거 뭐라는거임??
I'm actually planning to visit there someday but I'm kinda hesitating now because I heard that there are lot of racist people in South Korea.

Some idiot made standards and the rest is saying “there’s nothing we can do about it, this is human nature”.
NO IT’S NOT!! 😂
It is human nature. Naturally beautiful people have better genes in generel. Human procreation is driven by good genes to a huge degree. That's especially obvious in the choice of a sexual partner but also in everyday life. Beautiful people are generally treated better by society.
@@LeylaOzden-fc1bi We have scientific evidence that shows that it's natural. Beauty standards might be different from country to country but there is a common denominator.
@@LeylaOzden-fc1bi At it's core, nature. Variations come from personal preference or societal influence, though those variations are comparably slight.
"However, among animals that's natural because the standard is set by nature itself and does not change." Human beings are also animals. Even though a way more developed animal we still have many animalistic drives ingrained into our biology.

Yes, but humans are a very diverse and adaptable species. We don’t need a beauty standard because we have many different kinds of beauty in both men and women. People have all kinds of preferences, probably for different biological needs (like genetic diversity, strength or better immune systems).

thats what happens when your country beauty standards control day to day life
every country has beauty standards but some aren’t really affected by it because it’s not so openly enforced

How boring would a garden be if all it's flowers looked exactly the same. How much more beautiful if it was composed of flowers of different types and colours, all contributing in their own unique way to the beauty of that garden. Ok but consider that in Korea that might be regionally radical. That's how dire the beauty culture has gotten, at least in urban areas.

Women choosing not to conform IS radical feminism.
radical feminism doesn't mean extreme feminism. it's just the second wave of feminism, and this topic definitely belongs under its wing.
Huh? Aren’t all your celebrities even your beauty pageants’ contestants mixed European?
@@Rin-le7cx no.. India is diverse with all types of color s and beauties
