I have done the Camino Frances completely from start to finish 5 times and will do it for the 6th time this year 2014. I have also walked the Camino via de la Plata from Seville to Santiago at 1000 kms. It is a drug for me and each time i walk the Camino Frances i see something new or meet new interesting people...i am lucky being from England because Spain is only 2 hours to fly from here.....And i do not take this for granted...I hope that you Lindsey and all the people that walk the Camino, enjoy it :)
That's fantastic, I'm very glad for you that you have been able to do it so many times! I know I will be a lifelong pilgrim as well. Thanks for sharing! And of course I wish you a buen camino for 2014! Let me know how it goes. :)
Fun to listen to your prep/advices for the Camino. my husband and I had our first experience in 2015 with a group ( an guide) in Spain. Just 11 days. Of course it was easier for many reasons but it also gave us the idea to go back and manage on our own. In 2017, we chose to do a section of the Camino in France ( GR65- from Conques to Moissac), that time we walked the 9 days with our backpack. We love it. We are planning to go back in May/June 2019 and do the whole GR65 from Puy-en-Velay to St-Jean-pied-de-port and maybe continue to Pamplona. We walked in different areas ( mostly in Europe) although we live in Canada. It is great to see enthusiasm about the Camino. I am blogging about our walks . My blog is on WordPress , the text is in French . It is a good way for me to share our stories and show some of the photos I love to take while traveling. Sorry for the long comment. I will watch more if your videos. Thanks for sharing.
When I was 19, back in 71, I spent a year wandering through Europe and the Middle East, walking and hitchhiking. I am an avid reader and this was pre Kindle. You chose your books carefully, always aware of their trade value, because they were heavy to carry.
The only item she listed that I would put on my top 5 is the walking sandals. Just completed the 800+ km Camino Frances in June. I was so tired each night I had no energy to read and never heard a single person snore. Many others had issues with snorers though, so ear plugs are a good thing to pack for most people. My top 5 would be well broken in walking shoes, toe socks and outer liner socks, floppy sun hat & ibuprofen.
I've been bingeing on your videos. Very helpful - I'm planning/saving/hoping to do the Camino Frances next summer, like the minute school ends. Thank you for all of your hints and wisdom!
You're the best! 10 days before I head off for my first Camino. That soap bar is an absolute life saver, so much room saved cause of that thing, thanks!
Thank you for the informative and useful information for The Camino, I will try to go in May/June 2022 from SJPP to Santiago, my first time Walk the Camino, I’m senior , widower, Hoping for the best. Wish I could find ,meet Camino partner to do the walk. Cheers ! 🇨🇦
Going there to st Jean pied de porc next week from Dublin , my first one . Thanks for all the great tips , and I found your channel only this morning , and I am going true your video like a wild fire .Josy
Really good advice here. I'm one who can usually sleep through anything so I didn't bring ear plugs. However, on the plane trip over to Europe I was handed a sleeping package that included a set so I brought them with on my Camino. My albergue in Sarria was next to a bar that was playing loud bagpipe music all night long. The earplugs saved me that night. I didn't bring walking sandals, but if I do it again I will. It wasn't easy using flip flops to walk around town. Personally, I wouldn't waste the space / weight for shampoo though. I ran out of shampoo and after not finding any small travel size bottles at stores in Spain for a few days I realized using plain old water does the job. Maybe if I had long girl hair I'd bring one bar, but only use it once every few days to make sure it lasts.
Thanks Tim! Yeah on my second Camino I left my flip flops at home... on the first, I wore them around Santo Domingo all day long and the next day when I took my boots off, I had massive blisters in between the toes where the flip flops go... it looked like I had webbed feet! Absolute nightmare to care for and bandage :/ Agreed, turned out on the second Camino, I didn't even get through one shampoo bar. But I only carried one on the Camino, the other I sent ahead with my extra stuff before I started walking.
Eddie Bauer has a headlamp I used, it has several different colors, especially RED and green which is much more less intrusive if finding your way to the bathroom or looking for that small item in your pack or you have lost your little pin light...lol
Yay! Another really helpful video. Definitely agreeing with you on 1,2 and 4. Ear plugs were really helpful as you can potentially get 0 hours sleep without them. I used my iphone as a light last time. I won't do that again..it was way too bright. I have bought a little keyring light.
Ok, so my friend is from Canada, she worked at Lush. She gave me the same map that you have on your wall (the country scratch-off!) Then she moved to Spain!
Re: soap holder. Coghlans sells a large yellow bar soap holder with holes in the bottom to drain water, and a cord attached to hang it on your neck or on a shower head. $5 at Amazon.ca
Thanks for these suggestions and your other tip videos! I'm planning to hike the Camino in 2018 (if I can't get enough $ together then 2019) and document my journey over on my new hiking + traveling channel.
I'm going April 11th, first time I've ever backpacked as well so I'm starting to freak out! hahahaha, thanks for the tips, I'll be hitting up Lush in the eatons center :D
Yup walked almost the whole way (AGAIN) in my walking sandals... but never used my little light this time, or my Kobo now that I think of it! So much for my 5 items ;) No list is perfect I guess, every Camino is different!
That tiny little light will wake up anyone that it shines on the reason most people carry a headlamp is cause it offers a red light option that the human eye cannot see when they close there eyes. Just some thought on getting a headlamp.
Great to hear your suggestions about respecting others early morning sleep! Hope your second experience was all that you hoped it would be. We can't wait to walk again :>)
Rick puravida Thank you Rick! It really was more than I could have imagined. I also can't wait to walk again! I haven't really felt the call since my last Camino, but lately I feel that flame starting to flicker again... We shall see. ;)
Hi! Thanks :) Hmm for me they are available in stores and online. The link to them in the online Canadian Lush store is in the description of the video. Perhaps they're not available in your country? I don't know! Good luck!
Lindsey...great video !!...I will be going end of April 2014...maybe I will see you !!Please tell me, do I need my boots or a new pair of tennis shoes will do just fine. I will stay in touch. Thank you again !!
Hi Tiberio, you won't see me as it was last year that I walked my Camino! As far as footwear goes, there's really no right or wrong answer. On my first I brought running shoes, on my second I brought boots... but both times I ended up walking the majority of the Camino in my walking sandals! You'll have to decide what's best for you. Buen Camino my friend!
People who want to start walking while it's still dark need a flashlight to find arrows. :) And while I didn't use my e-reader very much at all this time, on my first Camino I know I would have loved to have it with me. You can be social and still take time to yourself. Alone time on the Camino is important for most people. For some people it's reading, for some it's writing, and for some, just walking alone is enough. To each their own, right? Ultreia.
Hello Lindsey...love your videos. I looked up at Lush Store for the soap but they only have the Bombs and others...not soap. Where can I get them? or are the ones you use are the bombs? thanks
Great advice! Doing my first solo trip in April-May 2016. Flying into Paris then taking train to SJPDP. One question...Do you think Albergues will be busy then or is it still a little off-season? Thanks for the video :)
EresNalliea808 Hi, thanks! Haha funny, I got the notification of your comment as I was browsing Lush products online... I have loads. Ocean Salt, Rub Rub Rub, Silky Underwear and It's Raining Men are some of my favourites.
I have a question for you. It seems that the Camino is marked out in stages and that everybody walks the same distance from one place to another. I would like to walk shorter distances and allow myself more time. Do you think this is possible?
Dee Sunshine yes, it’s possible, there are Albergues (pilgrim’s hostels) in littles towns between usual stages. Check out this web site caminodesantiago.consumer.es/mobile/los-caminos-de-santiago/
While many people do follow guidebooks and "established" stages, it's certainly not necessary. There are towns all along the Camino and new places to sleep popping up all the time. You can likely walk as little as 5km a day if you'd like. (I anticipate this information is no longer useful to you but thank you for your question regardless)
Why not? You have more control over what you can bring from home, and the size of the products, since you have to carry them. I personally didn't find many "travel-size" products when I was in Spain.
Probably because most people walking the Camino have little experience doing so and feel more comfortable indoors in a bed, and also because there are few places to set up camp that would not be technically trespassing on private property.
The ones I show in the video (and brought on the Camino) are called Karma Komba, and NEW! May can be lovely, it was for me, but is unpredictable. You kind of have to prepare yourself to be wet and cold, and hot and sweaty. You'll probably get a mixture of the two. Sorry, wish there was a better answer I could give!
Headlamps are essential for shining a bright directional light at haphazard around a dark dormitory (clue's in the name) where people are asleep. I don't know why anybody needs a flashlight. It's selfishness and indulgence. E-readers define exclusivity and unsociability. Buen Camino!
I was wondering which lush shampoo bar you would recommend if I intend to use it for both my hair and clothes. I have medium length hair and will be gone about 45 days. Will one be enough? What do you recommend?
+Rebecca Goeman Hi Rebecca! On my first Camino, I was gone about the same length of time as you and used my bar every single day to wash my hair, body and clothes. It ran out about 3 days from Santiago, but I had also stupidly started using it before I left. On my second Camino, I barely got through half a bar because I washed things less frequently/found other folks to share a washing machine with. I'm only bringing one this next time. I would recommend Montalbano, Jumping Juniper, Brazilliant, or New. Those will be cleansing enough to get dirt out of stinky socks ;) Good luck!
Update: this time I almost finished mine in less than a month because it didn't dry as easily. I would run out this time if I were here that long, with medium length hair and not doing laundry every day. So you can take that into consideration too haha!
LUSH does have two bar conditioners, I personally find them a bit difficult to use, and can go without conditioner if I have to, so I just brought mini conditioner bottles from the drug store
Lush products can be bought on line if you don't have a store near you. I have never used their shampoo bars so don't know what they are like. They also make moisture bars which I have used and liked
Maybe, if they're that bad! Take care of them and try not to overadjust and change the way you walk too much. That's how I ended up with even more blisters.
5 people wake up and ready to prepare and go, 2 people still in bed and complaining light and noise, that,s very absurd, 2 people should,v stay in private room and they should respect the people who need some lights and prepare. Understanding, accepting is the great part of " El Canino"
Respect all around! The sleep-in folks should expect some rustling and lights, but the early leavers should do their best to have their stuff ready to go when they go to bed so they can slip out as quietly as they can, IMO.
ugh i feel like the reader is a waste of weight... I thought I would read but I had so much fun talking to new people or I was in too much pain to be bothered with reading. I have to say hiking sandals are a must!! From burgos to Finisterre I wore sandals! I ended up having to buy hiking ones in Leon (borrowed a friends until I got there) and spent more than I would have liked to!! I even walked in socks and airplane slippers at one point!
Are you willing to visit every square inch of every country to get rid of all of the scratchy stuff? I have the same map but decided to just scratch off a country just for visiting it. I must be cheating lol
My advice is not to hike sumer time in spain its unbelievable hot you can easy die no joke ! I see many memor memorials in the trail to Santiago! Its not a joke is serious business
Ah, there's the Camino spirit we know and love! A one minute video would have been much less informative and no one would know my reasoning behind why I included them. Thanks for the "feedback" friend
Like you say Lindsey...this is no 'camino spirit'...it must be a troll...I certainly wouldn't expect such misanthropy along the camino! Thanks for your video, and you do have a lovely voice after all, so talk away!
I have done the Camino Frances completely from start to finish 5 times and will do it for the 6th time this year 2014.

I walked the Camino in May-June 2011 and also used the Seanick Lush bar. It's going with me again in September. Loving your videos, btw.
Great advice. I'm planning for my first Camino in August/September 2019, after I retire.
Mike it is Nov. i am visiting portugal on a retirement scouting trip. I decided on this trip to do the Camino. I will attempt it in 2021

I just finished my Camino. I used the Lush shampoo bar and it worked great. Best advice about what to bring. Thanks a lot. Deacon Andy.
Awesome! Glad it worked for you!
My friend and I are walking the Camino del Norte in spring of 2016. Hopefully your Dad can share his experiences and wisdom from his experience.
+alliaskis Unfortunately, my dad ended up having to cancel his trip but hopefully will make it out in the next couple of years!
Wow! Super helpful! Walking from St. Jean to Santiago August 2014. Thanks for taking the time to share with us!!
Thanks Cindy! Buen camino, enjoy the planning stages.. it will be here before you know it!

I'd suggest a red lens light. You can see in the dark and wouldn't bother anyone else.
I loved El Camino, I did it last summer, and I'm looking forward to do it again in a few more years :D
I planning my trip 2017, hope to see some of you there

Thanks a lot for sharing. The soap and square box are a great idea.
great 5 items. light is important when leaving early in the day. yes, good strong walking sandals. thanks for sharing.
I'm going April 11th, first time I've ever backpacked as well so I'm starting to freak out! hahahaha, thanks for the tips, I'll be hitting up Lush in the eatons center :D
Haha hey no worries YOU CAN DO IT!!! If I can, anyone can. :P Buen camino girl!
Yup walked almost the whole way (AGAIN) in my walking sandals... but never used my little light this time, or my Kobo now that I think of it! So much for my 5 items ;) No list is perfect I guess, every Camino is different!
I am about to walk the Camino and find your tips helpful. Thanks Lindsey
Awesome, you're welcome Kym!

Great video, lovely presentation. thanks for the advice, almost forgot earplugs :-)
Nicolaas Cuperus Thank you! :)
Could you do a video on these Shampoo Bars by Lush? Sounds really convenient 😊
Great advice! Doing my first solo trip in April-May 2016. Flying into Paris then taking train to SJPDP. One question...Do you think Albergues will be busy then or is it still a little off-season? Thanks for the video :)
+Jeff Putnam Hey! I want to walk my first camino also in April-May! Good to know there are other people around then :)
I will be in SJPDP on April 19-20 to start, Good luck with your journey!
+Jeff Putnam Nope, that's a very popular time to walk! Nothing will be closed at that point. Buen camino!
Im doing Camino in Sept. 13. ...400 miles soooooo excited
love your advices !!! doing the camino in may from oviedo.................where can i get the soap??? thank you for all the advices !
You're welcome! It's from a shop called LUSH. It's worldwide.
great idea - the shampoo bars, will get those thank you.
Love your videos. Just wondering, what are your favorite Lush products?
EresNalliea808 Hi, thanks! Haha funny, I got the notification of your comment as I was browsing Lush products online... I have loads. Ocean Salt, Rub Rub Rub, Silky Underwear and It's Raining Men are some of my favourites.
Wow thank you ! I will certainly go get that shampoo from Lush !
hardrallymusic Enjoy! Haha I love LUSH so much that I actually work there now. :P
Check out this web site caminodesantiago.consumer.es/mobile/los-caminos-de-santiago/

cant wait for my trip my 16 b day im walking the camino
It’s a very nice pinky, thank you great info, kapai.
1) breath.
2) what is the significance of the trip? Guess if I ask I don't know.
Thanks
Why to take shampoo and soup? you will go through many, many towns that have Pharmacies and they have those items in their inventory
Why not? You have more control over what you can bring from home, and the size of the products, since you have to carry them. I personally didn't find many "travel-size" products when I was in Spain.
Thank you so much for all the videos you uploaded. Made me feel more prepared for this.
Hi love your advice. I often wonder why don’t people just camp
And sleep outside M
Probably because most people walking the Camino have little experience doing so and feel more comfortable indoors in a bed, and also because there are few places to set up camp that would not be technically trespassing on private property.
thanksssssssssssss ...great...
see yall on the trail
buen camino
Thank you! You must have been just behind me then. I finished in Santiago on 28 May 2011.
Good video, we are off next week. Many thanks
Which Lush bars did you use? Also, how was walking in May? I'm going in mid-May 2015
The ones I show in the video (and brought on the Camino) are called Karma Komba, and NEW! May can be lovely, it was for me, but is unpredictable. You kind of have to prepare yourself to be wet and cold, and hot and sweaty. You'll probably get a mixture of the two. Sorry, wish there was a better answer I could give!
Planning to go, dry helpful Thank you
Thanks very much! Leaving from Leon in September!
Headlamps are essential for shining a bright directional light at haphazard around a dark dormitory (clue's in the name) where people are asleep. I don't know why anybody needs a flashlight. It's selfishness and indulgence. E-readers define exclusivity and unsociability. Buen Camino!
How exciting!! Buen camino!
Ok that soap you use. You might want to ship yourself some Camp soap if at all possible $4 for an 8oz.
I have that same scratch map!!!
You are a wonderful person I can tell!
Enjoyed it. Very helpful.
Do you really need a lamp?, Every smarthphone has a lamp nowadays, I used it during my camino, inside as well as outside finding the arrows.
Haha well they do now! :P
I just found that iPhone flashlite! and added it last night!! : )
I liked 'be respectful to others" (and of course to yourself. Thank you. Iain at - Camino Voices'
Making me want to do the Camino a third time... I miss the silence.
I know what you're talking about
Rik Corijn but of a delay :p follow me, because I'll be doing the via francigena soon - may youTube blog it.
What about hair conditioner in a bar?
LUSH does have two bar conditioners, I personally find them a bit difficult to use, and can go without conditioner if I have to, so I just brought mini conditioner bottles from the drug store
Lindsey, what about showering? Are there showers there?
Ricky Scaggs Yes, there are showers in every albergue.
Your videos are great!
Thanks Lydia!!
Try not saying "like" all the time but thanks for the tips, we're getting ready to go.
Great advice.
Thanks
Thanks David!
Awesome suggestions thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!
good advice!! thanks^^
You're very welcome!!
Thank you! Helpful :)
Hi, I am thinking to go this spring - what's this shampoo called? I did not understand it :/
They all have different names, they're shampoo bars. They're from a store called LUSH, it's in a lot of countries but not all.
Lush products can be bought on line if you don't have a store near you. I have never used their shampoo bars so don't know what they are like. They also make moisture bars which I have used and liked
11$ for a bar of soap. I'm glad I make my own.
i'll be going soon
just found you. Thanks. I love that your laid back about it! I'm leaving in 2 days. Yee-haa
one advise that I need, if I get bad blisters do I need to rest one day ?
Maybe, if they're that bad! Take care of them and try not to overadjust and change the way you walk too much. That's how I ended up with even more blisters.
Thank you good tips
I am leaving April 7th 2016 planning for 5.5 weeks of walking. Probably not going to try and make it to Ronceville the first day. James
good luck,
Thank you for these terrific #5tipsfortheCamino #LindsayCowie
Hola! You'll be a week or two ahead of me but buen camino to you as well!

Get a library card for your reader. Books are free
Ha, 7 years later I'm all about the library e-book game! Still have the same e-reader too!
5 stars!
aMAZING,,i BET
ugh i feel like the reader is a waste of weight...
You need to scratch Canada off your map :-)
But it's so big and I haven't seen much of it! It feels like cheating!
Number 2: just use your phone instead.
What can I say, 2011 was a different time and I didn't have a smartphone yet! Haha.
my god she can talk!
listing five items should take one minutehow she loves the sound of her own voice
