- Imagine you just spilled some medicine, and your dog is running into the room thinking it's a buffet of treats. You cannot block them physically, but you say "leave it," and they stop in their tracks, potentially saving their life.
That is why teaching your dog to "leave it" is one of the most important skills they can learn. It requires impulse control and a lot of practice, but it's something you can achieve.
In this video, we will demonstrate how I used a fun game with four steps to teach Ellie and Emma from @EllieGoldenLife to "leave it."

I just got my Golden not too long ago and she's NOT food oriented at all. So trying to train her has been a hassle! She's only 12 weeks old!

The "leave it" comman was one of the first things I taught my dog and I'm glad I did, there have been multiple times where a pill or something dangerous to her fell on the ground. I just say "leave it " and I can pick it up. Then I praise her

SIT is even better! Teach your dog to sit on command at any time. Tell them to sit at odd times. While walking just stop and say sit. If they are running in the backyard tell them sit off and on leash. Get it to the point it is automatic to them. It saved my first Golden! We were playing in the yard. I was chipping golf 😊balls and he retrieved them and I would do it again. A ball got away and it crossed our street and he went to get it. A car was coming down the street and I yelled SIT! He stopped and put his rear end on the curb. 5 seconds later the car passed! I was never so proud of him!

I’d use a different word in that case. You can use anything as long as you’re consistent
