I had to keep reminding myself of that as I watched that clip. Having said that, Neil's analysis here is quite sound... though he left unsaid what I take from this... The UK Government was better for having the Lib Dems in it! Now I wasn't happy with all the things my Party did in coalition and in many ways they were very naive, but when the electorate kicked them out, they got something worse. Though the situations are very different, the problem with the Brexit Referendum was the same as the war in Iraq.. Nobody asked 'what next' There was no plan.
I supported the Leave campaign and agree with Andrew Neil that it was the result of the referendum that broke the Party. Austerity was not the success Neil thinks it was. It was supposed to do two things: reduce gov't debt after it ballooned from having to bail out the banks, and get the economy back on an even keel (as he said). Austerity failed to achieve either of those goals. Borrowing actually *went up* , in fact the Cameron & Osborne gov't borrowed more than all Labour gov'ts _combined_ . The UK also had the longest and slowest economic recovery in two centuries. Austerity went against prevailing economic wisdom, which is that you do not make cuts in a recession, that dampens economic activity by removing vital resources and funding from an already weakened economy. This was completely borne out when you consider that the Obama administration in the US launched a massive stimulus programme instead of austerity, which succeeded as America's economy bounced back within three years of the financial crash and set up America's future success as it has continued to grow almost uninterrupted ever since. Austerity was not the result of necessity because it was not based on sound economic principles, it was pure ideology - this is what happens when you put a bunch of Eton and Oxford-educated posh boys and posh girls in charge of running things, people who study things like Classics, Philosophy and Literature (i.e. the subjects of the upper class) instead of degrees that might actually be useful for a political leader to know about, like Economics or International Relations. This is why we are so badly led, again and again. Oh, and austerity also led to Brexit, so there's that too.

Austerity is a crisis time instrument. It can be necessary when all other instruments failed, even in the form of shock therapy. But it only can work if it’s a temporary step for a very limited period of time. No longer than two years in an absolutely worst case, it shouldn’t in fact last longer than few months. Seven years of it is way too much for any nation. It is a textbook way to create a “revolutionary situation” as Lenin described it ("the bottoms don't want and the tops cannot live in the old way" 😂). Brexit came as a revolutionary event in whatever U.K. had become after seven years of austerity. If only George Osborne campaigned for Leave… we would have stayed! 😅

The Tories achirved practically nothing in 14 years, only destructive, societal level chaos, and huge wealth extraction (the latter being the modus operandi for the Tories anyway). They used the chaos to privatise the NHS and buy up state owned assets on the cheep. They used the chaos to allow natural monopolies like water and railways to run roughshot over our strategic infrastructure and get away with fleecing the public, wholesale. Andrew Neil's analysis is completely incorrect. He seems to view the Cameron/Osbourne years as pretty decent. For the public they were catastrophic. The decision to cut spending on services and refusing to borrow when the cost of borrowing was extremely low was incredibly inept and vindictive. It's true that May, Johnson, Truss and Sunak also did immense harm to the UK population, but the decision to implement austerity was obscene.
By his own analysis, Andrew says the Brexit vote has been the sole cause of the Conservative's woes since 2016. But he then describes Cameron, who called the Brexit vote, as a decent PM who history will look kindly on. Not sure those two comments support each other.

Actually - he has gone on record as saying that he has never revealed which way he voted in the referendum - famously he even said that his wife doesn't know which way he voted. Just to clarify. Andrew says there was "Johnson followed by Truss followed by Sunak" and "then the pandemic hit". Of course, the pandemic actually started in early 2020 just after Johnson became PM, and over two years before either Truss or Sunak were PM.
It would be more accurate to say 'the pandemic response hit' because as Sweden showed us, our pandemic response was a massive, costly, overbearing boondoggle of a response, that in the end cost more lives than it saved and saddled the British taxpayer with eye-watering amounts of debt.

They could have borrowed money and spent it on targeted policies to encourage growth (reducing corporation tax and basic rate, reforming the NHS, investing in education to reduce reliance on migrants etc.). They didn’t, instead they cut spending on core public services and stupidly thought this wouldn’t affect output or growth, and spent ridiculous amount of money and resources on impractical projects (e.g. HS2, Brexit). You can debate the the things they chose to cut and we might agree there, but the government had to show the gilt market public spending was coming down or we could've ended up Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal etc. where the markets refused to lend to them and they ended up making massive cuts anyway (the greeks had cuts of >30%). In the end the cuts the 2010-15 Cameron government made were almost exactly what the Labour Chancellor had said he'd have to do in the 2010 election.

Incorrect. Public spending as a percentage of GDP dropped massively from 2010 by the OBR figures. It cranked up massively during the pandemic but very little of that spending went to public services. Most of it went to Tory mates and donors.
Pre Brexit wasn't quite good - it was a time of deliberate austerity, the aim of which was to reduce the size of government, and this led to the present state of the NHS and all the public services.
Andrew says that Truss was elected by "only" 200k Conservative party members, implying that that was insufficient numbers to give her both a mandate and legitimacy. Andrew then goes on to praise Sunak as PM, but, of course, Sunak wasn't elected by anyone, and was rejected by Conservative members. So, surely his mandate and legitimacy are even less?
The lettuce should have got in. If one PM is replaced by another during the term, then that's politics. A new election should really be called within two years, unless an election would happen within that time anyway- but it's no biggie. If that new leader fails before the following election, however, then a general election should be called immediately.
He was the preferred candidate of MPs which works to reflect public opinion because they want to hold onto their own seats. We don't have a presidential system where people vote directly for the prime minister they want but MPs of the party in power choosing fits with the spirit of a representative democracy.

If we're getting technical about it, the mandate is tied to the manifesto, something which both Truss and Sunak have actively and knowingly worked against. This ignores the incredible damage that austerity did to the UK public services, which is now undermining the growth of the economy. Almost every problem the uk has is tied to austerity, immigaration -(lack of training in uk workers), lack of housing (little investment in housing infrastructure) University (student visas) prisons (lack of prison places) Healthcare (High levels of mental health problems, record numbers of people to sick to work. almost complete failure of social care) not to mention the incredible levels of poverty. If you are sitting in a mansion in France it is easy to miss the cold hard reality and havoc austerity has created. The lack of social mobility and creation of an elite who have too much money to care is at the heart of the conservative problems and those of the uk.
Currently I'm just being smart and frugal with my money, I'm in the green 47% over the last 23 months and l've accumulated over $70K in pure profits from DCA’ing into stocks, ETFs, dividends and futures. However I’ve been in the red for a month now. I work hard for my money, so investing is making me a nervous sad wreck. I don’t know if I should sell everything, sit and just wait.
Stocks are pretty unstable at the moment, but if you do the right math, you should be just fine. Bloomberg and other finance media have been recording cases of folks gaining over 250k just in a matter of weeks/couple months, so I think there are a lot of wealth transfer in this downtime if you know where to look.
completely agree. I have been consistent with my profit regardless of the market conditions. I got into the market early in 2019 and the constant downtrends and losses discouraged me, so I sold off. I got back in December 2020 and this time with guidance from an investment adviser who was recommended by a colleague

I've always rather admired Neil as an interviewer, but his personal political opinions have been disastrously wrong-headed for at least 50 years. He was "OK" with Thatcher deindustrializing and selling off enormous swathes of public assets - especially housing - for short-term gain. But his grasp of economic rationality has got even worse since then (austerity was good?!).
I remember the Tory slogan "We are all in it together". What lies the Tories told. The reality was the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. With food banks opening in every community forcing UK men, women and children to use food banks to survive. With Westminster Tory austerity since 2010.

They used the chaos to allow natural monopolies like water and railways to run roughshot over our strategic infrastructure and get away with fleecing the public, wholesale. They used the chaos to destroy our relationships with our nearest neighbours and create an atmosphere where lies and propoganda went into overdrive thereby gaslighting the nation. Andrew Neil's analysis is completely incorrect. He seems to view the Cameron/Osbourne years as pretty decent. For the public they were catastrophic. The decision to cut spending on services and refusing to borrow when the cost of borrowing was extremely low was incredibly inept and vindictive. It's true that May, Johnson, Truss and Sunak also did immense harm to the UK population, but the decision to implement austerity was obscene.

It was a political choice. You don't get growth in the economy by squeezing living standards. Even the tories now realise that. How do you think Roosevelt turned the USA into a powerhouse after the depression and Atlee turn Britain around after the war.? By spending money to build things and get the economy growing. Both Roosevelt and Atlee knew to grow the economy you spend on infrastructure and public services. The money was borrowed to do this and paid back out of the economic growth. Brexit and Austerity has caused where we are now.
There was absolutely no need for austerity at all, interest rates were low, it was the time to invest. That is what the US did, and their economy since 2008 has been night and day compared to ours.
The USA has the world's reserve currency. It enables them to do things which would be impossible for any other economy.

They could have borrowed money and spent it on targeted policies to encourage growth (reducing corporation tax and basic rate, reforming the NHS, investing in education to reduce reliance on migrants etc.). They didn’t, instead they cut spending on core public services and stupidly thought this wouldn’t affect output or growth, and spent ridiculous amount of money and resources on impractical projects (e.g. HS2, Brexit). And here we are to day - more debt, low growth, broken public services system, and cost of living crisis.

You can debate the the things they chose to cut and we might agree there, but the government had to show the gilt market public spending was coming down or we could've ended up Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal etc. where the markets refused to lend to them and they ended up making massive cuts anyway (the greeks had cuts of >30%). In the end the cuts the 2010-15 Cameron government made were almost exactly what the Labour Chancellor had said he'd have to do in the 2010 election.

Incorrect. Public spending as a percentage of GDP dropped massively from 2010 by the OBR figures. It cranked up massively during the pandemic but very little of that spending went to public services. Most of it went to Tory mates and donors.

If one PM is replaced by another during the term, then that's politics. A new election should really be called within two years, unless an election would happen within that time anyway- but it's no biggie.

Almost every problem the uk has is tied to austerity, immigaration -(lack of training in uk workers), lack of housing (little investment in housing infrastructure) University (student visas) prisons (lack of prison places) Healthcare (High levels of mental health problems, record numbers of people to sick to work. almost complete failure of social care) not to mention the incredible levels of poverty.

Stocks are pretty unstable at the moment, but if you do the right math, you should be just fine. Bloomberg and other finance media have been recording cases of folks gaining over 250k just in a matter of weeks/couple months, so I think there are a lot of wealth transfer in this downtime if you know where to look.

I've always rather admired Neil as an interviewer, but his personal political opinions have been disastrously wrong-headed for at least 50 years. He was "OK" with Thatcher deindustrializing and selling off enormous swathes of public assets - especially housing - for short-term gain. But his grasp of economic rationality has got even worse since then (austerity was good?!).
I remember the Tory slogan "We are all in it together".

Perhaps they didn’t know how to achieve it (i.e. Brexit) because the opposition, the media, the devolved administrations and the EU did their utmost to thwart the mandate of the people. As regards covid, again the opposition, the media & the devolved administrations did their utmost to ensure that the country was locked down - leading now to the UK’s impending bankruptcy. In my view, a lot of the damage was caused by the unreasonable pressure applied by others, who knowingly and deliberately exploited the chaos caused by these events.
