Must disagree on Bakhmut. Just because a battle has become attritional doesn't mean it cant also be asymmetric. Russia was willing to take Bakhmut at great expense. Ukraine needed to give them their prize at maximal cost with minimal cost to them. Yes it was a meat grinder but it did not grind the meat evenly. Had Ukraine just said it's not worth it, Russia would have been able to allocate resources to areas of conflict that were more favorable to Russia. Bakhmut was showing losses for Russia as high as 7:1 to Ukraine at times. In order to keep these insane losses Ukraine needed to keep in that fight by taking losses and resetting the field from time to time. Bakhmut will go down in history as an example on how to keep your enemy invested into a disadvantageous position. We must remember that the battle for Bakhmut singlehandedly caused a coup attempt. Bakhmut was the reason Prigozhin turned and even though he failed the entire debacle was very disruptive to Russia's war effort. I see the critique but if you zoom out it was a master class that Putin paid for.
Well the argument went that sending more ammunition would have reduced the stock of ammunition below minimum levels. Although who else they expected to fight, beats me.

Sean Bell is infuriating as an experienced RAF Officer, what was the alternative but to hold the Russians at Bakhmut? Move to the rear and fight in less opportune ground? In a built up area the Ukrainians had the advantage to attrition the Russians. That’s what they did.
My main issues with his take are: 1) He admits he doesn't know what the Ukrainian losses were. 2) Seems to downplay that battle caused Prigozhin to lead a mutiny which had massive impacts on Russian moral. 3) For all intents and purposes lead to the removal of Wagner from Ukraine which was by most accounts their "best" units. Don't get me wrong Ukraine had significant losses and you can argue Russia mainly lost convicts, but I think the trade-offs in the end were well worth it.
Russia lost this war more than 2 years ago. Even if Ukraine capitulate tomorrow and promise to do anything for Russia, russia still has lost. The same as Germany lost ww2 in 43. Now it is only how bad Russia is going to loose. Will or will it not be a Russia and how many millions of russian civilians will starve and die.

RU has only managed to occupy 1/5 of Ukraine's territory at colossal costs. RU's military is being hollowed out, international economic ties are diminished and innovative potential is damaged. The industrial base can't sustain the war in its current intensity. At the same time Ukraine operates as technology intensive as possible, has strong partners and plays the interrnational game well. I get that “Custer’s last stand” is a figure of speech but a couple of things… 1. Azov made a valiant effort and does seem to have been an inspiration, but they surrendered. They did not fight to the last man as is implied in the conversation. 2. I don’t know if it is because they’re Brits and unfamiliar with American military history, but not at all analogous to what occurred in Mariupol. Custer was the aggressor, and pursued and initiated the Lakota Sioux and friends, and arguably being an arrogant and tactical buffoon who confronted a larger force he lost. While a resounding defeat for the US, not even half the regiment were casualties. 3. They use this as a term of endearment. Nearly nobody in the US who graduated college since the late 1960’s would use this term with a positive perspective unless they were some brainwashed military brat. In the US Custer’s Last Stand implies foolishness, arrogance, willful ignorance, not the bravery they are attempting to conjure.

The Ukrainians don't need to destroy the Kersh bridge, the road and rail bridges in Rostov feed the Kerch bridge and are more vulnerable targets..
Agreed. The access road to the bridge around Taman is a lot easier to neutralize than the bridge. But also easier to repair though.
Both roads and rail are fairly easy to repair. Though I am sure there are ways to make repair very risky.

The Kerch Bridge is more symbolic of Russian Imperialism. Destroying it means Putin can't drive any more trucks on it.

Putin thinks he has been sent by God to restore Russia to greatness ( my precis) Thinks he is going to change the world...hope you find it.

Must disagree on Bakhmut. Just because a battle has become attritional doesn't mean it cant also be asymmetric. Russia was willing to take Bakhmut at great expense. Ukraine needed to give them their prize at maximal cost with minimal cost to them. Yes it was a meat grinder but it did not grind the meat evenly. Had Ukraine just said it's not worth it, Russia would have been able to allocate resources to areas of conflict that were more favorable to Russia. Bakhmut was showing losses for Russia as high as 7:1 to Ukraine at times. In order to keep these insane losses Ukraine needed to keep in that fight by taking losses and resetting the field from time to time.
Bakhmut will go down in history as an example on how to keep your enemy invested into a disadvantageous position. We must remember that the battle for Bakhmut singlehandedly caused a coup attempt. Bakhmut was the reason Prigozhin turned and even though he failed the entire debacle was very disruptive to Russia's war effort. I see the critique but if you zoom out it was a master class that Putin paid for.
Nato has to maintain its commitment for Ukraine.

Sean Bell is infuriating as an experienced RAF Officer, what was the alternative but to hold the Russians at Bakhmut? Move to the rear and fight in less opportune ground? In a built up area the Ukrainians had the advantage to attrition the Russians. That’s what they did.
What happened to the Wagner Group? They lost at Bakhmut

My main issues with his take are:
1) He admits he doesn't know what the Ukrainian losses were.
2) Seems to downplay that battle caused Prigozhin to lead a mutiny which had massive impacts on Russian moral.
3) For all intents and purposes lead to the removal of Wagner from Ukraine which was by most accounts their "best" units.
Don't get me wrong Ukraine had significant losses and you can argue Russia mainly lost convicts, but I think the trade-offs in the end were well worth it.
Sean Bell is not famous for his insightful observations.

Thorough conversation, thank you both. I may onderscore that Russia's war in Ukraine looks like a textbook example of imperial overstretch. RU has only managed to occupy 1/5 of Ukraine's territory at colossal costs. RU's military is being hollowed out, international economic ties are diminished and innovative potential is damaged. The industrial base can't sustain the war in its current intensity. At the same time Ukraine operates as technology intensive as possible, has strong partners and plays the interrnational game well. RU will pay a huge price for Putin's imperial obsession.
Yeah, I don't know how this war will pan out but the magnitude of the damage it has caused Russia (not talking about Ukraine now, and the reparations Russia should be made to make) is absolutely eye-watering. To its economy, to its population figures, to its oil refinement industry, never mind to its military machine. Oh yeah, and to its standing in the Western world, and a lot of the rest of it too.

I get that “Custer’s last stand” is a figure of speech but a couple of things…
1. Azov made a valiant effort and does seem to have been an inspiration, but they surrendered. They did not fight to the last man as is implied in the conversation.
2. I don’t know if it is because they’re Brits and unfamiliar with American military history, but not at all analogous to what occurred in Mariupol. Custer was the aggressor, and pursued and initiated the Lakota Sioux and friends, and arguably being an arrogant and tactical buffoon who confronted a larger force he lost. While a resounding defeat for the US, not even half the regiment were casualties.
3. They use this as a term of endearment. Nearly nobody in the US who graduated college since the late 1960’s would use this term with a positive perspective unless they were some brainwashed military brat. In the US Custer’s Last Stand implies foolishness, arrogance, willful ignorance, not the bravery they are attempting to conjure.
Agreed. They should know better. And without being too woke, Custer's strategy was to capture women and children to break the spirit to fight. There was nothing noble about the aims of his military campaigns which was to push people off land. Its a pretty dark history as was usually the case when Europeans met with natives. Inevitable maybe, but still not noble.

My understanding is that to this day there are still Azov participants being held as POWs although most of them have been exchanged already. In no way is this analogy appropriate in my opinion. The morality of the event is only related to their referring to the analogy as a positive.
