I know that as of today this vid is almost 4 years old, I watched it when it was new. I just bought one and this information was priceless. Sometimes you never know when you'll need information like this and knowing where to look is key. Thanks Harvey.
I just snagged a SUNL ATV-109 today from a co-worker that needs to have the battery charged, carb cleaned and a good romping to clean out the cobwebs. Maybe not in that order.
He also told me that it runs great for about half an hour, then it shuts off and wont start again until it cools down. I've watched a couple other videos and done some research but your video not only laid things out better than everything else but also made more sense.

Hey INECIKlavier!!! Sound like U got a great deal!!! About heating up and shutting down, could be Ur CDI or spark coil, but, before U mess with them, I would make sure the gas flow into the carb is good, I have running across a few smaller China carbs where the bowl fills very slowly, especially when the motor gets hot, had something to do with the float needle valve, I just swapped them out.... I just got a brand new wiring harness for my 110 and installed it and it had no spark, so I got to 111 in your video and saw the part about the yellow black wire on the cdi going straight to the coil, and looked over my wiring again and saw that I had the cdi plug plugged into the hand control and the hand control plugged into my cdi, now I’ll change em around. Thank you so much, your a life saver

I like the way you explained with the basic 12 V with the scooters and the quads doing a good job I've been mechanic for years and just started playing with the scooters and these Chinese wiring is so undependable keep up the good work you got my vote

I have an Alpha Sport Cobra 180. I was told all it needed to run was a new wiring harness. I was given two harnesses with it. Hopefully, the information you provided here will help me get closer to getting my quad to run.

Harvey thank you,I bought a Honda 110 for fifty dollars . Pretty much complete. It even had the tools,that are kept on the frame .The fenders were just faded a bit. I could not get spark I worked on it for about 6 hours and I came watched your video and you said you got no ground you got nothin. So I ran ground wires everywhere and by gosh I got spark and it started up right away. I thought it was grounded all ready but it wasn't. The bike had set in a Barn for over 15 years . Just think just because of a Ground wire . Thank you. Oh I also have a little Chinese quad 110 and a 250 They are okay could be better if they made their frames stronger. I

Harvey Spooner got a 07 Manco talon 260 .. been trying to get this thing running consistently.. replaced all components. Even bought the dc Cdi that you use haven't hooked that up yet.. what a headache
Harvey I need your advice, I have a 90cc 4 stroke believe it's a kazuma engine. I recently replaced all the wiring, along with stator, rectifier, coil, starter solenoid, ignition switch, everything due to some wires shorting out.
When I replaced everything,it fired up in 1st try, a couple days later it wouldn't start. Had low compression, so I tore into the top end to check everything.
Ended up replacing head gasket and stuff. Found both valves,so took them off, removed all the carbon and re installed, and adjusted the valves.
Re installed engine, put everything back together, and I have no spark.
Checked all the connectors, all "look" good.
I have a multimeter but it's too fancy for me, can't figure out how to use it 😂.
What do you think it could be?

I have a 2008 Baja 110cc quad. I'm getting fuel and spark. Starter and solenoid are new. New spark plug as well.
My problem is, it cranks and cranks, but doesn't turn on. Everytime when it cranks, you can hear some noise from the exhaust (like a popping noise as if it wants to turn on; with the choke closed AND opened). But, I bought this from an amateur mechanic who, which had appeared to open the valve end of the engine, and who also stripped the spark plug entrance (it goes in fine all the way with a rachet and in small areas, it tightens up, but it keeps spinning when you try to tighten it on the last thread).
I have yet to use a multimeter, but I will be buying one tomorrow. I've only been using a fuse checker (one of those tools w/ an alligator end that lights up when you touch power)

Harvey Spooner I started following your how to today. So far I have the engine off the frame...i have two of them, and I'm trying to put together one working engine. Is the coil pack for the spark twelve volt? I ask because I need to know if I can rig it up with the jumper or if I need to have it connected to the converter
Hey Joe, For a Capacitive Discharge Ignition, (CDI), system the only power to the spark coil is the output from the CDI box, the CDI box maybe powered by the battery, (DC CDI box), of from the stator, (AC CDI box),... I will be doing some wiring on the Jonway 110cc mini quad over the next week or so, please stay tuned.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

Thanks dude. Removed the white black wire coming from the ignition lock and it worked.. it seems that the ignition lock dont work right anymore and the black/white is all the time on off

What makes it fire only when start button is pushed and stopped,only time you get spark to plug, only fires twice, when you hit start button and when you release the button,no spark when it's turning over
I have a modified honda cub that has a 125cc hondamatic, it got soaked by sprinklers one night and hasnt started since, its kickstart only. I ended up replacing my cdi, coil, plug, reg/rectifier and still no spark? Thanks for helping all of us!
ok so i got a 1977 honda 90cc 3wheeler symple wiring but nothing was conected ar the head light and to beleve i got no sparck not to mentchion no cdi when i puled evering like the wiring has no way on one but i cant find any wiring diagram to hook anything proper and it came with out the head light im sure somthing is missing i just need the engin running for a gokart i built from ground up ive been on the gokart prject for 2 years now due to trying differnt engins non witch wold run due to wiring this is the typ of engin i want on it regard less cuz i want a manul gokart so i cant due the engin mount on it till i know i got a running engine that will run appon finishing the gokart putting the engine that rins in order to wire up the kart any help like step by step would be great.
Nice. But a on paper wiring diagram would be helpful. I have motor , cdi. And relays for on and off controls. It’s a tifan water cooled in canoe.

Bought a used Baja 50cc engine. I was told it had low compression and would not run because of that. I didn’t use a meter, I took the spark plug out, jammed my thumb in the hole and kicked it. compression seemed strong. I checked spark and it does have very strong blue spark. Timing is on point. Cleaned the carburetor immaculately, but nothing. Took carburetor off my honda xr50 which I built from an empty case so i know its 100% working and threw that on, still nothing. Thought cause I didn’t use a meter maybe the compression it does have just isn’t enough after all, so I replaced the piston and rings. Compression isn’t the issue now, spark doesn’t seem to be the issue, and since my honda runs, i don’t think carburetor is the problem either. Whats next? Should I replace the entire wire harness? Should I take the entire engine apart and check each individual part as I reinstall everything? Tbh idk where to go from here. Starting to get frustrated with this now.
If I want to just get the engine running I only need to use the 3 wires comeing from stator to cdi to coil to ht lead don’t I ??? Plz anser me ASAP I washed my qaud and now won’t start but I don’t need rectifier and all wires all I need for it run is state wires and cdi isent it ???
so if my engine say 48 m3 on the head its a 50cc? i thought it was a 90cc let me know im very interested in how you can tell by the engine

On a 125cc Chinese ATV what is the little black box under the seat that has 2 wires coming from it?
Yes I do but the thing is that I tested every thing the stator, coil, spark plug you name it, it's just not getting any spark
Nick, Given that U tested everything and got good readings, I would disconnect and float the on off wire and hook an extra ground between the motor and frame and wire harness green wire and the ground on the spark coil just to be sure, if no spark, Ur CDI must be dead... Should cost around $15 on eBay.... If U live near the Hudson Valley of NY, I could look at it for you... Let me know how it all turns out.... Thanks for the info, asking, watching, and commenting!!!

Can you explain the simpler systems that don’t have batteries and a starter. If I could get/find a real schematic I wouldn’t be asking. I “assume” the CDI gets power from the generator portion of the stator and the spark signal comes from the igniter pulse. Also, what voltage does the generator put out to the CDI and Coil if there is no voltage regulator. Im assuming it’s AC but don’t know the voltage. Im asking because I would like to build a tester that sends a pulse to the coil to do a quick easy coil test for process of elimination. Would also like to remove the plug, spin the crankshaft with my drill and measure the generator and igniter voltage coming out under fairly consistent rotation speeds.
I've replaces stator coil cdi plug regulator .eliminated kill switch from cdi.all resistance ohms are good.what could it be.no spark..defective new cdi?it cut off when son hit a bump and it only sparked weak once after.then I replaced all parts still no spark???

I just checked the stator on my neighbor's kids quad and sure enough the black/red has OL showing so is likely bad. I ordered another stator for them but the wire seems good, is there possibly some way to repair the stator?
I have an ssr110 pitbike and the wires are almost the exact same. If all the wires read the correct ohms leading up to the Cdi and I still don’t have spark could it be the cdi?
Hi. I got this unnamed branded Chinese 50cc 2 stroke quad. It started and ran fine and then wouldn't anymore. There isn't any spark. I've tested and measured best I can namely the coil and stator. But I can't find a CDI box on this engine. Does it work without s conventional cdi system? Where could the problem lie? Blown pick up coil on stator? Please help. Tnx. I know this is an old post but thought i would give it a shot and ask ,i hav 90cc kymco mongoose atv ,that wont do anything no crank no lights ,when i turn on the switch to start it ,but when i bought it ,i put new switch, new battery and cleaned old gas out and carburetor and when i tried starting it it cranked and ran but was running wide opening, so i took carburetor bak off and checked everything and put bak on it wouldn't do anything now ,also has new starter relay and plug and i checked gap on plug ,should i follow this video ,if anyone sees this would reaaly appreciate any help thanks

hi harvey thanks for the video i followed it and my wiring is identical to the one you have in the video. i was able to get the lights/horn an starter but i still get no spark to the plug. will be replacing the CDI next. but not sure what else to check on. got this from someone that has had it sitting out for a while so slowly getting back into running order.

2008 50cc scooter won't start. Ran in 2018. So-so start but got it running. Ran OK for 3 months. Couldn't start one day to go to work. Ugh!
Things I've done.
- Checked battery volts = 12.5V
- Installed new spark plug = good spark
- Installed new carb
- New gas filter. Checked gas flow post-filter using cylinder vacuum = Good flow.
Now what? Stumped.
After installing carb, do I need to prime? Doesn't look like gas is getting to spark plug. Plug looks dry.
Any suggestions or questions?

Hello I have a question about my Chinese atv. So I cannot find the problem because my atv cranks but it doe not start. There is nothing going to the coil. I noticed that my ground wire has a black and a green coming off of it and it is getting really hot when I press the start on my engine. Can you help me out please?

Great video! Very easy to understand. I have a 2010 Gio 200cc atv. I'm having trouble with intermittent spark. Every reading is good. My black red is only 295. My blk yel is only getting .5. New cdi blk yel got 1.1 now only 0.5. Any help or suggestions would be great. I'm thinking cut everything out and start over? Looks like someone was experimenting with subpar connections/splices.

I love watching your videos. because it takes sane m person to understand the moron that wired and configured these unit, they are so inconsistent with what use for ground, green blk, or even the hot, blk white or red, etc... i had to unwrap my entire harness today take deep dive try figure it out. Well, I got a push button replace into handlebar for push to start to work, on/ff didn't, Key works, now i have no spark, think the CDI is dead. ordered New one, after this video tomorrow weather permitting, do some checking OHm checks. as always, these videos are perfect.
Hey Harvey. Wanted to say thank you. Got my son's Tao Tao 110 running for the first time after 6 years of just sitting there. Pulled the kill switch wire from the CDI as you pointed out, sprayed some WD-40 in the carb and it started. Ordered a new carb from eBay for $15 and it starts right up, every time.
Not sure which of the 5 or 6 redundant kill switches is the culprit, but hoping I can remove them all except for the key and the left side handle bar red button kill switch.
Question: Assuming I can just splice the "kill" wire to the CDI to only the key and the red button on the handle bar and I'll be able to shut the quad off? In the mean time, using the carb's choke to kill the engine, which works every time.
I just picked up a 2016 TaoTao scooter the only way I got the tests it is with test light. I checked all the wires that go to the cdi box the coil the stator . They're all good and I still ain't got no spark. And after looking at your video . I'm thinking of sending wire harness . And that's going to be mess . Would you agree bet it could be in the wire harness ???

have a coolster while checking spark it sparks and then quits until you bump it again sparks about 5 times and quits again any answers are greatly appreciated
Hey Joe!!! I would start by disconnecting the black wire with the white stripe from the CDI, (disconnect it such that it can be reconnected in the future), I have found that if the engine off circuit is active, it may spark a few times and then stop.... I got a kazuma falcon with a chopped up wire harness. I had to hook up a push button to start it. No spark. Mine only has 4 wires coming out of stator. Black, white, yellow, blue. Was going to get a wire a new harness but they all have 5 wires? Any ideas what I can do??
Nevermind on that I found the green wire burnt off. Still no spark.

So found that I had no ohms from the red/black from the stator. I took off the cover and found a bolt that holds the stator on had worked itself out and beat the stator up a lot. I bought another stator and still have no fire/spark and still get no reading from the red/black. Any suggestions?

Great vid. I got one question though, I bought an aftermarket wiring harness, but the red (power) wire from the battery is pretty thin. Is it possible that it's not thick enough to pass the current to the rest of the wiring harness ?
Just stumbled upon this video as I recently bought a taotao 124cc for my son. Had it running great and then it started spitting and sputtering so I got a new carb unlike the Chinese one where you cant access the float without drilling. Anyways didnt fix the problem. I'm noticing excess fuel coming out of choke side and I've adjusted carb every way I know how. I'm thinking either a sticking intake valve on compression or could a bad cdi box cause such a weak spark that it's not burning all the fuel in the chamber? All I know is it backfires out muffler and carb which says valves to me but also I've got way too rich a mixture and my plug is black. Thanks for any help!
Hey VIP!!! I think Ur intake valve is adjusted too tight, U need to loosen it up a bit and it will probably start right up... U should adjust the exhaust valve as well.... For the China stuff and the old machines that I'm running, I tend to run with the valves on the looser side.... I rather hear them tap than have them too tight and have them burn a valve drop one for over heating!!!! I hope this helps, Ur first instincts about the valves are probably right.... hello i have a 110cc chinese quad i have no spark i did all test i have ground to cdi and to engine/frame stator isnt shorted to ground neither the pulse generator. pulse generator has 127 ohms to ground i snipped off the black/white wire already for kill switch. stator black/red i get 365 ohms. what could it be ? theres continuity from stator blue/white to cdi blue /white so wiring is good ?

Picked up a baja wilderness 250 atv for my kids and it didn't have a battery. Starts right up with the pull cord but the kids find it hard to pull. I bought a battery for it, didn't have a ground wire so I ran a new wire from the battery negative to the frame and another one from the frame to the starter bracket. It turns over fine but won't start, if I unhook the battery ground and pull start it will run. Once running, if I attach the ground wire back to the battery it will spark and die. Also, if I run a battery with booster cables to the starter alone and crank it with the key on it will run. I checked the ground wiring and it checks out ok, but with the battery involved in the system it won't run. Any ideas where to go with it?

Hi buddy I have 1 110cc atv that will only spark once after flicking the kill switch in and off. Have read lots on these but no real solutions. Tried to take the black and white out the CDI that should disable the kill switch but still get nothing. Any ideas ? Tried 2 different stators, cdis, solinoids, even coils but no change. The loom is new also. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Hello Harvey I have a Tao Tao 250 cc that I'm trying to get running. It was running before I took off the wire harness and replace it with a new one. Colors have been switched on a few wires and i can no longer get it to start. Please help!

Hey Jelly, U have no spark???? I would cut the black wire with the white stripe that goes to the cdi such that it can be reconnected easily and let both ends float, see if it sparks now, if yes, there is something wrong with Ur engine stop circuit...
