  • A very enjoyable day over at Ron's place and then getting to ride his 1972 Super Glide to lunch. Didn't take the GoPro unfortunately but will try and take some footage again sometime.

Today's Harleys can't capture the pure V-Twin soul of a Shovelhead. That sound. That idle. The whirrling sound after a throttle blip. Add a kick starter and an eyebrow headlight cover, and remember that this "74" engine was the king of the highway back in the day.

My first new bike was a 72 superglide (without that silly boat tail). Kept it for 15 years till life got in the way. Regret it to this day. I've owned a dozen Harleys since, but nothing can compete with your first love. Hang on to it.

Nice old motorcycle (the FX). I’m putting (another) ‘72 together right now. It’s a boat tail version just like my brother bought brand new in September of 1971 and like the last one I had in the early ‘90’s (which got sold to buy my wife’s engagement ring). I see you run a forward facing shift lever (no more UP for 1st gear).

I just bought a ratty 72 shovel head. The one in the video is close to how I'd like mine to look. I'm keeping my big front fender!

Cool! Good luck with your project. They sound so great. I love the fact that it was so bare-bones.

Love the Shovalhead's. I have 1971 FLH that's set up very similar to the blue one. You last year Harley Davidson came out with a retro Harley that looks exactly like your blue FLH.

They are like AK47s, have a very distinct sound when used.

LOVE SHOVELS! Is that factory paint on the black one? Should it have a design around the Harley logo like the blue one? Thanks

Hey I'm working on a 69 flh but I'm having a hella time finding parts with all the swap meets down due to the virus. Do you know any good online parts sellers other than like J&p?

Just a quick question, why do you kick start the superglide by jumping on it from the right side? Why not just sit on the bike, straddle It and kick the bike over with your right foot? I kick my 68 XLCH and 71 superglide like that. I could never understand why people have to use their whole body to jump on a kick starter instead of just using their leg? I’m 65 and still kick start with just my leg. I don’t get it? One of these days that old kick stand is going to snap and you and the bike will be laying on the ground!

Hi Roy, I asked Ron who owns both bikes. He told me that they are stock to the super glide and that HD borrowed the front end from the current Sportster to create a leaner custom look bike for ‘71, which was the first year. Cheers, Mike

@@TheMightyGarage Exactly. Thats where the FX came from - the F from the FL and the X from the XLH Sportster
