- This is the Shovelhead engine I went over for the Guys over at Turner Customs. They installed it. It started right up, and with no miles or changes, it sounds like this.
Shovelhead at idle=most beautiful mechanical sound ever created
Yah. Glad you like it.
I'd agree with you, but you should look into ww2 plane engines
Yes! That's why I love them!
If only the evolution sounded like this
I don’t know what sounds better, the bike or this mans soothing radio voice lol
Now I'm blushing. Thank you.
The bike sounds better but yeah he has a voice for radio. Soothing? Naw, kinda’ weird but a great mechanic and my favorite, a cone Shovel; or maybe a Pan Shovel or a Pan or a Knuckle.....Flattie...
Sounds great Mike I appreciate my 72 FLH after buying a twin cam.
Pacific Mike great work bro! Our son was killed on his 06 Deuce this past July when some careless driver turned left in front of him! Now I would like to find a reputable shop to help rebuild his bike! Thanks for sharing bro!
He does have a great voice. Or as the old saying goes "He has a face made for radio"😂 Just kidding Mike.
That old shovel sounds great...but Mike has the gift of a voice perfect for radio. His dulcet tones would be great on a jazz station late on Friday and Saturday nights.
Wow! Do I hear a job offer?
Great voice. Great presentation. It’s so refreshing to see a video that doesn’t start with some tattooed guido saying “what’s up guys”
Thank you.
Rick Kane @ totally agree! Or worse yet, a stupid intro as if it’s the start of a movie or something!
@Turn N Burn its going be a sad day when all these old guys that really care about HD pass
Rick Kane It's getting to be quite a freak show with them isn't it
@@ronrichards2691 The problem with getting old is we start forgetting stuff we already learned a long time ago.
That's a precious sound when you can't ride anymore after a lifetime of riding every day. Thank you Brother Mike.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Nothing sounds like a Shovel!
The sound of the 70's!
Thank you.
C.C. Hiliner I have a 75 I am working on. Any free advice?
@@dmkext1 Some TLC goes a long way!
And back in those day's, women literally lined up to go riding on the back and were really excited about it.
@@joesurfer9754 Those must have been the days, shame i never experienced those days.
Awesome Mike!!
Nothing like the beautiful sound of a Shovel head engine!
Great job Mike!
Thanks for sharing this with us!
Thank you.

Yup, I just found this guy. Makes a great video!
That self satisfaction of hearing it run after the rebuild never gets old. From one old wrench to another, thanks Mike I sure do enjoy your videos....
Thank you. And yah, I never get tired of it.
Are u in texas???
That's a real Harley, they just don't build 'em like that no more. Simple and designed to keep running for years.
@@juliancrooks3031 might be simple but they definitely don't run for years without keeping up on the maintenance 😂
I could definitely listen to this shovel sound all day and never get bored with it. Most beautiful sounds let alone the v8s
I enjoy it alot. Thank You
Nothing sounds as good as a Shovel. You're doing a great job letting us into your "Harley" world. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent.
Thank you. It takes all of us to make that world. None of us own it. But, we all get to support and enjoy it.
I loved my '78 75th anniv. 80" El Glide. Beautiful sound and look on this classic Super Glide.
I understand. My 77 FLH is still my road bike.
Have a few in the stable new m8 ...twink. Big big EVO....but when i grab the 82 flh shovel ( something i try to do everyday ) i smile and so do everybody else. Still makes me smile here in the northeast during winter . Seems to just sit there like and ole faithful dawg...😂👍👍👍👍
Vids are always a joy....thanks Mike
I get it. Thank you.
Love that sound, on idle it’s like no rhythm but hit the gas and everything comes together love it 😍
Me too. Thank you.
No m8 ever gonna sound like that, that's for sure...new Harley's have lost that awesome sound.... Great bike sir..... Love what you do
Thank you. I love the old bikes and their sounds and feel. But, there's room for everyone.
Ur crazy my m8 sounds badass
I hope not! its a different motor hahaha but in all honestly, the s&s 475c cam sounds pretty great on mine. check em out man
Good work, that Shovelhead runs very smoothly. Love Harleys!
Older sounds better but all Harleys sound cool with proper pipes, come on
Totally drooling all over keyboard right now. What a great tribute for the customer's brother. I'd LOVE to find a nice shovel.
Thank you kindly
Oh my, that is really really good. Kudos to the guy who set up the carb!
Thank You. That would be me and Rob Turner.
Very nice! I had a '72 and a '75 Superglide. That sound sure brings back memories. Thanks!!
Thank you.
Beautiful. I had 75 fxe sg shovelhead. Now, I have 82 fx wg. I love shovelheads. Nice that he is restoring his deceased brother's bike. Great way to pay tribute.
I agree. Thank you.
Those were the days - Shovel rules ! I own a ´83 FXWG and it makes me smiling on every Ride. Greetings from southern Germany
Good for you! Greetings
The brothers bike story caught me.
That chiked me up, little close to home there.
Thanks Mike for that sound.
Thank You
Nothing beats that old time stock sound, thanks Mike, great job.
Thank you.
Great to hear that sweet sound. I had a 75 FXE super glide, loved that bike.
Thank you.
Cats voice is smoothe . Like a real professional . Wish I had him as a tech in Auto body in highschool. Would have made a great teacher and mentor I'm sure
Thank You. But, I didn't get along with school much.
You are a lucky man!!! Thanks for sharing your jewels! Greetings from Cottanello (RI), Italy.
Thank you.
I seen that grin on your face when she was idling sweet i had a grin too great channel mike keep them vids coming
Thank you.
From one Mike to another Mike, Thanks for the memories. I bought a brand new 1981 FXE and put drag pipes on it. I remember that sound well....wish I still had it.
They made quite a few. There are some out there.
Very nice! I owned a 76 superglide for 10 years, loved it! Wish I still owned it. Thanks for sharing this
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dang it, now I’m wanting a Shovelhead. That sounds great!
Man does not live by one motorcycle alone. They don't even fight when they're left in the garage together.
Those old shovels sounded amazing.
I love em too.

Sounds strong :) I love it when you send a bike out the door with a happy customer. You feel warm inside knowing there's another bike on the road. Ps i dig the brown paint
You bet. It's a great reward. And the more of them you have out there, well, it's a legacy of sorts. I'm silly enough to think I'll be able to hear the bikes after I"m gone.
I have a stock 1982 FXB Sturgis... thank you for all the videos, they will help me to keep my bike running !
Thank You. That's a real fun model.
That is probably the smoothest Shovel I've ever heard. Ya done good, kid.
Thank You.
That’s one beautiful Harley!! Love the sound!!🎶🎶🎶🎶 Thank you....
Thank you.
Such a beauty. Like an old cat after her owner passed away, I wish her luck. May she find a new owner, who loves her just the way it used to be - and how it´s supposed to be.
Oh yah. She's where she belongs.
Man I miss the sound of all my old shovels !!
They're still aroud.
I had the 77 FXE. Rode it for 10 years. Fond memories.
Yes, I'll bet it was a great time. Do it again.
I've always liked the sound of Shovelheads especially with a mild cam and pipes.
Great job Mike
Thank you.
My dad had a 73 FX, I currently ride a 81 FXEF. That's a gorgeous bike, thanks for helping to preserve it and letting us hear it. Really enjoy your channel, Mike, keep up the good work!
Thank you.
Needed that sound today , 29 degrees here in Michigan , and my shovels in pieces
Thank you. Wishing you an early Spring.
Turner Customs did a GREAT job on the restoration, very clean. There's just something about a Shovel with straight drags.........that sound reminds me of my younger days..!
Yah. I ran straight drag pipes on my Shovel for so many years, it's a wonder I can hear at all.
That shovel sounds fantastic Mike! Awesome job. The whole motorcycle turned out great.
Thank you. The boys at Turner's did the rest of the bike.
Man o man, I think I'm in love! Something about the distinct sound of a shovelhead that can't be beat.
Thank you.
It makes me miss my 82; Sturgis. What a sweet ride that was.
Thanks for that beautiful noise. It almost brought a tear to my eye. I have an 82 that I haven't got to hear run in quite a while.
Thank You. I wish you back on your 82. None of my business, but I always get happy from riding. So, I naturally wish it for you.
the sound of that shovel with straight pipes brings back real good memories.
Thank you. Me too. Let's make new memories.
@@pacificmike9501 sage advice.
Been waiting for this. Notification came through as I was working on my own Shovel way down here in New Zealand. Man, I've got a long way to go.. LOL. Thanks Mike. Keep 'em coming.
Thank you.
Boy, terrific sound Mike! That Shovel sounds perfect! Nice job.....
Thank you.
That is one special machine. You do great work in keeping these beauties alive and well.Thank you.
Thank you.
Hello I'm so fasinated to hear beautiful Harley Davidson sounds
Me too!
Best sounding motor Harley ever made
I love Shovelheads. I love the sound of a hot rod Knuckle or the sound of a Panhead.
In my own opinion the ironheads always had the best sound. More of a sweet gallop then the big twins. I think it has something to do with the 4 cam design as opposed to single cam.
I love the sound of an old JDH. The first twin cam. They had rowdie sound
Old 900cc sportster with drag pipes has a good sound
@@alleycat1084 I had an old 900 sportster chopper and in my mind it had a better sound than the shovel I ride now. Wish I still had it
Lovely lovely all being well I will have to get another harley this year love shovelheads and panhead which is my favourite but I love the 103 heritage that I have the pleasure to own lovely bike regards Alan from the UK
Cool. More bikes are always better. Then you have the right bike for each type of occasion in your life.
greetings from sunny Queensland Australia. I had an 80 cube shovel Sturgis back in the 80s and 90s . can't beat that sound. I ran a 2 too 1 exhaust off a superglide with 45mm Weber.boy she had some grunt took out 2nd best Harley in the dirt drags at Purga Creek lots of memories thankyou
Very cool! I'm probably not well, but I try to hang on to them. That Sturgis was something special.
@@pacificmike9501 oh mate I tried . one day... one day cheers
That sounded so awesome! Toward the end sounded like a horse galloping along a paved road, so sweet!
Thank You.
Confirmed!
Beautiful sound.
Great jobe fone.
Motor working so smoothly.
Cool!
Thank you.
Fantastic love hearing the shovel
Thank you.
Beautiful bike, and beautiful sound! I started riding in 1982 and last August bought my first shovel, a 1980 Superglide Fatbob. I've been living vicariously through your videos as I wait impatiently for spring to arrive on the Canadian prairies so I can ride again. Thanks for your videos!
Very cool! I've ridden Vancouver in the summertime. I loved it. Thank You.
Nice job Mike, sounds great, love those older bikes. Thanks for your videos
Thank you.
Hi there Mike, I'm not a Harley guy but that is a really nice sounding bike. And what an awesome restore. You did a fantastic job on the motor. Thank you sir.
Thank you.
Great video, as always, Mike! Sounds so sweet.
Thank you.
Gunna wack the gas and give her a squirt! Love it! The rythmic idle really takes me back, dad had a 75 FLH full dress that i grew up on and you just stirred up great memories with that idle!! THANKS MIKE!
Cool! Thank You.
You did a great job on it man . I Had a 75 FXE and you brought back some Great Memory's . Thank you .
Glad you enjoy it.
Ain’t nothin on the road that sounds like an old “troublehead” I’ve had several and loved them all. Great vid man
I was hoping you were gona show off and use that stomp start...😜
We have other videos. There are kickers and bikes with an electric foot. Check it out.
Sounds like a well oiled sewing machine, fantastic.
Mike I've just decided I'm going to try and be as cool as you from now on too.
Love it
Thank you. I'll bet you're plenty cool. I'm just a guy who loves this stuff and I appreciate you watching it.
Dont get me wrong, but I dont know if anyone can be as cool as mike lol
Ohhhh that sound..... thank you!!! that off center rumble is soo distinctive!!!
Thank you.
If I lived in the States you are just the sort of guy I would go to Mike. I wish I was working with you, I would learn a lot.
Thank you. Great though, but I'm retired. Just my own stuff and a few close friends.
Perfect sound! 🤘🏻
Thank you.
Great bike and well done on the build Mike. Sound like your perfect Shovel. :) From Aus.
Thank you.
@@pacificmike9501 pure magic from one Mike to another..love your work. I miss my old Sturgis
Man, that sound from the shovel, you just can't mimick it, love my '77 low, pure beauty.
I agree.
knucks, pans and shovels all have their own sound but I personally love the way an 'ol shovel sounds. I hadda 69, those 60's models stand out for me!
I get it.
That sounds incredible
Thank you.
I love how the older bikes sound ; ) that lope
Thank you.
Love this sweet sweet sound .... Thanks ! ... from Ottawa Ontario
Thank You.
love your vids Mike. Been riding since 71, my first Harley was a used stock 68 FLH bought in 71. Been riding Harleys ever since
Thank you. Yah, I caught the disease a long time ago too.
one of the best motors harley made certainly one of my favorites and still affordable yet durable and reliable
I agree.
I listen this sound all day.
Yah, me too.
Restoring my Shovel FXS-80 from 1979 which I've been riding here in Sweden since it came from California in 1989, I can see it's very similar to this FXE, which btw sounds great with that S&S. Love your videos, helped me a great deal to get perspective on the restoration job. You're making very inspiring videos for us people with older Harleys.
Thank you.
Great job on that build! Sounds great!
I had a ‘78 FLH with dual straight fishtails. Man, I miss that bike!
Thank you.
Love that root-beer brown
It's a factory color applied by Turner's Customs of Yucaipa, California.
I’ll never give up my shovel.
I won't either.
I did and have regretted it ever since😭
Really enjoyed hearing it run!! Thank you Mike!
Thank you.
Just very positive energy .Thank you Sir. Awesome voice and much more.
Thank You.
Now that sounds like a Harley supposed to sound. Myself, I'd put an old style fat bob tank on. I even like the paint color, and all the bright work. Looks good, sounds goog , and no doubt it rides good. An outstanding build.
Yep. Thank you.
And that friends is what a Harley is supposed to sound like

My father in-law started my 81 shovel out in front of my house today before a ride and the sounds it made when I heard it inside was soo god damn good. Its almost better when other appreciate your builds than yourself!
It"s all good. Sounds like the guy out there is the kind of father-in-law to have.
Awesome ride. My first bike was a 1982 Superglide, 1340 cc, blue, straight pipes and I loved it. Thanks for the video.
Thank you.
Old Harley engines always sound good. Even though my Twin Cam Road King sounds good my old 82 FXRS Shovelhead sounds better.
That sound has been captivating people for a looong time.
terahz1 Carbureted engine sounds better. You can set that idle down low to get that sweet sound.
terahz1 No doubt they sure do! I have a ‘82 FXS Low Rider & a ‘77 FXE Superglide and I love the sound of them much better than any EVO engine around. Good Day to You!
I had a 1943 John Deere model B that sounded similar except a much louder plopp plopp.
Two thumbs up Mike.
Thank you.
Old technology. I'm sure I'd love that tractor too. Thank You.
Thanks Mike, this was a good taste, and enough time to let us have a good listen.
Thank you.
Beautiful! I have 2 carbureted Evos and need a Shovel yet. Chilly in MI today, thanks for warming me up.
Thank you.
Mike!!! Identical to mine. I love it. You have some great stories.
Thank you. Enjoy yours. What a pleasure.
Love the videos guys. Always very well explained and detailed. Please keep them coming!
Thank you.
I had bought a brand new 1973 Superglide FXE for my first bike. I also had the kicker kit put on before I picked it up. I also put on the straight pipes. When you started it up, I just turned up the sound, and closed my eyes, and I was right back in 1973 with my bike. FREAKING AWESOME!! Love that sound. My Uncle had a 49 Panhead, and we rode everywhere. Good times, my friend... good times... Thank you!!
Thank You for the grand memories.
I had one exactly like that. Wish I had it now. My wife and I ride a Tri Glide now, but if I had one of my old Shovelheads, I would use that for my solo trips to the grocery store, etc. Miss that sound.
I get it.
Nothing like a sweet sounding shovel. Awesome Mike.
Thank you.
Great stuff fella. Makes a snowy Belfast on a February morning easier!
