    Your comment of, “As long as you take care of them, they’re gonna last as long as you want them to” reminded me of the actual 4014; despite their differences in size, all three engines were well-made by their respective manufacturers and all three have been well taken care of long after their manufacturer has disappeared (I have no clue about Rivarossi though.). And that ‘Ghost Grey’ (Builder’s Grey) of the 4002 is absolutely beautiful! Well done video and enjoy your Big Boys!

    Nice big boys!, I am curious If the early Rivarossi big boy models perform as well as the ones you have? I think Rivarossi started making them in 1967

      The earlier runs has less in terms of mechanics. They had pizza-cutter flanges as well as the motor sticking out back of the cab. They weren't as precise as these newer ones, but still was able to get the job done.

      fallingup90 .......that’s what I have. Look for the red box with the foam insert. That’s how they packaged the last run.

    I really like the idea that you don't need the tender to run them and being made in Italy they seem to have an artistic expression about them.

    By side rod offset do you mean how synchronized the sets of driving wheels are? In real life those can go from being in and out of synchronization depending on wheel slip. I've seen old video of a big boy or challenger leaving with a heavy load from a stop and the front drivers slipped a couple times since there was a little less weight on the front set than the back. I have a few articulated locomotives and one of them came new with the drive wheel sets in sync but I like the offset look better too so I undid the bolts at the bottom of the wheels, turned the main drive axle a quarter turn on one of the sets, and now it is offset and to my liking.

    The paint was some sort of infra-red (or?) reflecting paint that showed detail better for builders photos required by the buyer. UP never operated their Big Boys in this scheme.

    The digital feature eats up some electrical power because of the extra electronics. Any engine with a decoder reacts the same way on DC. Rivarossi took too long to up grade to RP25 wheels. They always had high flanges on it's wheels. When modelers jumped to code 70 track, these locos derailed, especially on turnouts. Until the european versions came out, these were the most accurate model Big Boys.

    • @fallingup90
      @fallingup90  4 роки тому

      No. Sound is added on the DCC models from later runs

      All I know is at least the one has an eccentric rod
