While the MTH whistle sounds more accurate, as I’m sure they recorded the Big Boy’s whistle in person, I think that Lionel captures the power of it much better than MTH.
I just got the mth one myself can’t believe it has such weak chuff sounds for such a monster of an engine it should have more bass and be louder the Lionel one is much better sounding more detailed and runs smoother
Also the Lionel vision 4014 is more in tune with the actual locomotive, cause even though I did not get to see the real one in person, but I did get to hear it's whistle and I can tell right away the Lionel 4014 is the better locomotive and I also saw a UA-cam video of Big Boy 4014 clearing his throat and getting all the gunk out of the whistles and sounded exactly like the Lionel. If you get a chance to do so, get on UA-cam and look up big boy 4014 blowing whistles after some years of storage.
Great haul! The MTH Big Boy having the commencement speech is a great touch, but I gotta say I like the Lionel whistle better. It’s bigger, clearer, more powerful.
The LEGO re-creation was genius. I love your videos and how they remind people of what is important in this hobby and that is that trains are awesome and super fun.

Over the years, MTH's sound engineers have always been one to ten steps behind Lionel when it comes to train whistles and robust steam sounds. They didn't disappoint with the MTH restoration Big Boy, Lionel by a landslide.
First and foremost, the Lego crowd made me smile. Second, the whistle: the Lionel whistle had more depth and character, at least in my opinion. That’s a fantastic haul Chris, thanks for sharing.
Both whistles are good, but the Lionel gave me chills up my spine. When I saw the Big Boy go through our town back in July of 2019, that's exactly how the whistle sounded.
As always, great video. You never fail to put a smile on my face, you are so positive (which is in short supply these days) no matter what you are talking about, great layout. Oh yea, hands down the Lionel Big Boy on every whistle contest you've had. Thank you for all the great videos.
Hello Chris Great video nice show at York Mr Muffin has a very nice train collection and the MPC era Lionel trains rock GOD BLESS STAY SAFE AND THANKS FOR SHARING ;-)
Thanks as always, Chris, for a crisp, fun train showcase and run. You picked up an impressive collection locos to enjoy over the summer. I hope you'll find time to share the fun. As for the whistle challenge, I have mixed feelings. I like the MTH Big Boy sound for its crispness, but I also like the Legacy Big Boy for its deep tone. It's very close the N&W 644, a very haunting sound, indeed, so refrain from making choice. Thanks for sharing your prosperous day collecting at York!
The Lego people was a good idea for the showing of the big boy lol! They both sounded ok ! Lionel had more kick n sounds. You’re going to be paying on your cc for awhile with these purchases lol ! Thanks for sharing, enjoyed watching!

The Lionel Restoration Model is fantastic! I have seen that one and it is impressive. Both Lionel and MTH have such unique elements to their models that make them interesting and fun to run. Thanks for watching!
Lionel's Big Boy whistle simply looks like Secretariat beating the others BY 31 lenghts in the 1973 Belmont Stakes. MTH is great, but this is Lionel by landslide.
Lionel 4014 by leaps and bounds. That is some motive power Hall impressive. I think you're slowly catching up to Eric's trains I think it's time you did a count like he did like an old-fashioned dual. Don't ever lose the facial expressions hysterical

No question! Lionel VL wins the whistle "sound" contest. I do like that the Restoration Series has whistle steam coming OUT the whistle though. That definitely is cooler than how the Lionel just has the whistle steam coming out a small hole. Great video!
I think the speech was great with the LEGO figures. Nice improvise, man! If I ever build my own train table like you have, I might do similar adjustments on the set. As for your question, I’m not sure. I might have to choose the restoration Big Boy for the better model. Sorry Lionel, I will keep buying your trains if I can, but considering that this is the last model the designer created and produced, plus the authenticity form, it’s hard to beat that!
I was in Utah to see 4014 and 844. I was in the front row. Had an amazing time and met people from all over the world who came to see 4014. I like lionel's 4014 whistle the best. By the way, 4014 is actually using 3985's tender. UP just unannounced 3985 will be donated to a museum, never to run again. So sad...
Lionel wins. Mike/MTH has been very good/great for the hobby. Lionel just seems to get it a little bit more. Quality control? For a different conversation. Great work Chris
From this recording the Lionel whistle "gets to you more" than the MTH. It sounds to me that the Lionel speakers have a higher fidelity. The presence of the revealing ceremony recording on the MTH is clever, commemorative and wonderful though. Hard to choose between them. If I had the money I'd have to have both.
Your excitement and enjoyment for the hobby comes through in your videos. It’s been fun watching your videos evolve. Great job. And, my vote is for the Lionel Big Boy. They both sound great but the Lionel sounds a bit more clear and has more oomph behind it.
Thanks Vin! The Lionel model has a bit of an advantage as it has the 3 speaker system VS the tender speaker speaker system that is in the MTH model. Appreciate all your support!

Awesome video Chris. I did see you at the train show on that Saturday but we never met. Cool stuff you got there, including the 785, 783, and the Big Boy. I also have the MTH Railking East Penn Railroad RS1 57! I live close to the real thing!
The museum of transportation in St. Louis, Missouri has a big boy that you can climb up into the cab and sit where the engineer would sit. It is quite awesome.
MTH announcement sequence is killer, but no way you can beat that Lionel Vision Line whistle. You gotta stop buyin all my bucket list engines Chris! I'm never gonna catch up! 🤣 love this video
Beautiful purchases Chris, I love all your engines but the MPC era stuff is a little hokey in the sound department but that was the hobby at that time so it's all good. The Big Boys are fantastic and I have to go with the Lionel whistle even though I am a big MTH fan but the whistle was just a little bit better with the Vision loco. Always look forward to all your videos so keep them coming.
MTH sounds more like the whistle I love seeing all those trains you did a good layout right now I'm still building on mine I have the all the big boy trains I have around house the only thing is I'm trying to build it and trying to get the roundhouse set up because the turntable each time it gives out and I'm trying to build it where it actually works without having no man you'll do it myself and I have a another steam engine I'm working on but rebuilding it keep making those videos I love them I'm just trying to get all mine set up and running the proper way I have a full layout it's just I'm just trying to get the trains all up to speed it must be expensive hobby but you got to enjoy keep making good videos
Love that authentic MPC sound, haha. If you're looking for a train-based coloring book, a family favorite is Amazing Trains: A Coloring and Activity Book by Lindsay Turlan.
What a great and fun video with the Lego crowd Wow you got some amazing engines at York I am a big mth fan but I think the Lionel engine wins the steam whistle battle
Chris, comparing my video of the Big Boy whistle sound as it arrived in Hearne, Texas, the MTH tone is more realistic, however, I agree that the Lionel sounds better. The oscillation of the MTH whistle is one of my issues in your video. Happy Trails Another great show !
While the MTH whistle sounds more accurate, as I’m sure they recorded the Big Boy’s whistle in person, I think that Lionel captures the power of it much better than MTH.

You gotta stop buyin all my bucket list engines Chris! I'm never gonna catch up! 🤣 love this video
Haha! I do not think any of us every catch up. It's like that old TM Books song "Just one more train", LOL
@@RBPTrains hahaha touche sir.
Great buys. And the Vision Big Boy is clearly the winner as it should be.
Haha! I knew you would say that...
@@RBPTrains 😆😆
Love the 844 and the paint I just like the gray and yellow
That's what childhood dreams are made of!
Lionel's sound was crisp and clear! Lionel wins!
I’m a MTH guy but Lionel whistle still is king. Can’t wait for my big boy to come in
Chris, comparing my video of the Big Boy whistle sound as it arrived in Hearne, Texas, the MTH tone is more realistic, however, I agree that the Lionel sounds better.
The oscillation of the MTH whistle is one of my issues in your video. Happy Trails Another great show !
Definitely I think the whistle on the Lionel visionline big boy is by far more commanding in sound presence.
Those are some cool locomotives wow love that last steam locomotive that big boy I run HO scale
This is probably my favorite big boy out of them
