  • In this latest BioTrekkie with the Admiral episode, we talk about biology in episodes 7 and 8 of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, including tissue regeneration, different effects of cold on the healing process, clinical and biological death, and root cuttings. We dig into some fun facts on inflammation and the longest time anyone has been clinically dead. On the production side, we cover the broad themes of forgiveness & something greater than ourselves, valuing the differences among us, scene transitions, and storyboarding. Extra shout-outs to Eve Harlow, David Ajala, and Tig Notaro, as well as the excellent character of “Hy'Rell”. Covered in this video are the episodes "Erigah" and "Labyrinths".
In this video series more generally, Star Trek science consultant Dr. Mohamed Noor (worked on Discovery seasons 3-4) teams up with Star Trek actress Jayne Brook (Admiral Katrina Cornwell in Discovery seasons 1-2) to teach science using Star Trek: Discovery. Videos use on-screen depictions as springboards to teach interesting real-world biology. And videos close with Brook's insights about acting and production, so Brook and Noor alternate taking on the role of student and teacher of their respective craft.

I had cold compression therapy after shoulder surgery. It really helped with pain.

Regarding the use of cold for healing, I took it to be a reference to the idea from DS9 about the Breen homeworld being a frozen planet, and that the armors were actually refrigeration suits.
Of course, L'ak doesn't wear a suit, or maybe he used tech that did the same, and the other Breen wear the armor for ceremonial purposes. Or perhaps he can resist the higher temperature by using the more solid shape the other Breen shun.

Wonderful review of these very epic themes, both biologically and philosophically. When I had my knee replaced this past year, part of my at home therapy was the use of a cold compress device to help with the swelling attendant to the healing process. I did something similar with my shoulder replacement, but the cool toy I got to take home was next level for the process. Basically running water chilled to less than 40 degrees through a compress I wrapped around my knee. "Cool stuff" for sure and certain!. I'm still fascinated with the Breen and the possibilities of their biology and their cold suits, just like the Aenar and their Andorian cousins living on a frozen world, yet still producing to bipedal species. Thanks for the science and the philosophy!

Typical post-Roddenberry theme ... technology saves. Other than that existential idiocy, season 5 is the best written and produced.

Is it true that I never saw a Muslim or Chinese name in any Star Trek or its hybrids?
