Origin of mate preferences and of life itself: Biology in Star Trek Discovery Season 5 Episodes 9-10

- In our series finale of BioTrekkie with the Admiral, we talk about the series finale episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, season 5, episodes 9-10. Biology topics include the origin of mate preferences, including direct benefits, nuptial gifts, and “sexy son” sexual selection. We speculate that life on other worlds may not be so improbable given the size of the universe, nor may it require intentionality or enormous energy sources for that initial “spark”. On the production side, we revisit the themes of diversity & connectedness, the excellent use of humor, the wonderfully choreographed action sequence, the great lighting in various scenes, the phenomenal performance by Doug Jones, and the beautiful goodbye hug montage at the end of the finale.
In this video series more generally, Star Trek science consultant Dr. Mohamed Noor (worked on Discovery seasons 3-4) teams up with Star Trek actress Jayne Brook (Admiral Katrina Cornwell in Discovery seasons 1-2) to teach science using Star Trek: Discovery. Videos use on-screen depictions as springboards to teach interesting real-world biology. And videos close with Brook's insights about acting and production, so Brook and Noor alternate taking on the role of student and teacher of their respective craft.

I refuse to accept that this series of videos is over.
I know that denial is the first step towards acceptance, but this is step that I want to stick to. Denial. No, it's not over.
Sometime later, there will come anger, compromise, depression and then acceptance. But for now, no, I am in denial.

Thanks for joining us, George-- always appreciated seeing your name pop up! And hope the acceptance comes smoothly! 😂 🖖
