- Grab some scraps and let’s make the Mathemagical quilt! This is scrap-friendly and fat-quarter-friendly. It would be an amazing way to showcase a specific theme, or a line of coordinating fabric. I’ve made this pattern using Star Wars fabrics and Harry Potter fabrics and it looks great.

Your video came up in my UA-cam stream so I thought I'd give it a try.
Then you said Quilts of Valor... we're an American military family and when my husband was deployed to Afghanistan, medivaced to Ramstein, he was given a QOV. As he was helped off of the plane at home, coming back to me, he carried only that quilt. (I'm crying. If only you knew how much those quilts mean to our servicemembers. Thank you.)
Thank-you so much for sharing your story Beth! I'm so glad he was able to come home to you and I hope his quilt has provided some comfort and warmth for the whole family.
I am not sure what the origin of this quote is, but I find it so encouraging: "The person who never makes a mistake never makes anything." Thanks for sharing your journey with us, mistakes and all.
Thanks for the quote! It's a good reminder that we all need to be willing to take risks.
Incredibly kind of you to not only make this pattern free but to put out such a comprehensive video. Thank you!
Thanks Dawn! Happy to contribute my little bit to the quilting community. Thanks for watching.
This is an amazingly clever design. I love the flexibility. Thanks for sharing all your tips (including that efficient fat quarter cutting).
I tried this pattern, after I read the directions carefully a second time, and shortened it. It made a nice baby size quilt. I removed Section 3. I always like a challenge of a new thing during the winter and this was my challenge for this year. I did my quilt in greens; lime green was the sashing pieces and used scraps I had.
I do want to say “read the directions carefully, then read them again.” I had to contact Michele because I thought the pattern was off; but it was me who was “off”. Her response was very kind and I really enjoyed making the quilt.
Thanks Beth! I’m glad your resized version turned out well!
What amazing quilts. Those racoons put a smile on my face, will be a wonderful gift to a cancer patient. Thank you for making these amazing quilts and gifting them. Everyone needs to have a hug from a quilt, to make their day/night a little brighter. You do amazing work, and your instructions are so detailed, thank you.
Thanks so much Diana! This has been great fun and the more I sew this pattern, the more fabrics and themes I think about will work really well. I hope you give this at try too! Thanks for watching.
My daughter in law has asked me to make a quilt from my grandson’s clothes and I think this will be the perfect pattern. What I found with the last one I made for her was that some clothes had large motifs and some had little patterns, this will work for both. Thank you, love it 😊
So glad you like the pattern Vonney! And making it with precious baby clothes will be great fun. Thanks for watching.
I wish I had a "K" and a "Jason" in my life!❤❤❤❤
I'm gonna have to watch this video in 15-20 minute stages and take notes, cuz I don't think I have great math skills🤪
Both quilts turned out beautiful! Nice Job❤
Thanks so much Deborah! Don't forget that you can get the free pattern from my website - www.bitsandpiecesquilting.com. That might help! Thanks for watching.
And yes, I'm very very lucky to have Karine and Jason in my life!! 💖💖
What a kind friend to share with you so you can sew while waiting for your shipment. It’s a win win situation for both of you.
Hi Becky! It has been wonderful to have such great friends. It's been great fun to continue to sew and know that these quilts will benefit others. Thanks for watching and for all your support.
I'm a FQ gal, I also love being able to showcase the collections in all their glory. I have made many children's sized quilts for foster care groups and other charity of hugs for young people, This is wonderful as it is a multi sized top. Thanks for the free pattern, your thoughts and work are much appreciated. From Texas with love.
Thanks so much Carylanne! What a wonderful effort to make quilts for kids - those hugs are priceless, I'm sure. Thanks for watching.
I love pressing open! My grandma taught me to press open and that’s usually what I do. I’ve tried to press to the dark but oftentimes I hear her say press open and that voice usually wins!
Hi Laura! I love this! Those voice we hear in our heads to guide us in the right direction! Thanks for watching.
Quilting newbie, you do make it look easy. I have a box of my mom’s cut fabric. I need help. That is why I watch.
You can do this Evelyn! This is a great pattern to use larger scraps. And you should check out my video and pattern for the scrappy four-patch trellis quilt - it uses A LOT of small pieces. Dig in and get started - I have faith in you!
@@bitspiecesquilting Thanks, I will. My mom was a great quilter. Not great at color selection but I think this pattern would make her selections look better. thanks again
After watching your video, I decided to use the pattern with frog themed fabrics to make a quilt for one of my younger sisters. This sister loves frogs and after talking to her about the frog fabrics I have, it was decided to not use any with white on them, at least not for her quilt.
As I like this pattern and have other frog and animal themed fabrics, I plan to make additional quilts.
What a great plan Zenata! I'm sure she is going to love her frog quilt! Thanks for watching.
Michelle, I thought I would post an update-my mathemagical cat quilt is at the quilter’s and it’s adorable! I LOVE this pattern and I will be making it again. QOV is a great idea. I have about five of them in the works, so a mathemagical version will be a good addition. Thank you so much for this pattern! I think I can post a photo on your website so you can see it, right? 🥰
Hi Beverly! Well done you!!! I would love to see a photo of the cat quilt. My email address is bitsandpiecesquilting@gmail.com. Thanks for watching and happy holidays.
What a wonderful quilt pattern for QOV! I am looking to make kits for our guild to produce new QOV quilts for 2025. What a great way to use our guild’s fabric stash and accomodate all skill levels!! Thank you so much!
That’s a great idea and I’m sure those quilts will be appreciated by the recipients. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this quilt pattern. I have been looking for a pattern for a memory quilt and this one is perfect. You are very kind to share this with us!!!!🥰
I'm so glad you found it useful Amy! It's a great pattern for a memory quilt. Thanks for watching.
Michelle, I LOVE this quilt. I'm about to make a cat quilt for a friend--twin size--and this will make the perfect--well, purr-fect--backing for the quilt. (I plan to piece cats for the top, so it will be two-sided.) I have TONS of cat fabric that's starched and ready to cut up and I'm so glad I saw this before I started cutting. I'll have to decide about directional fabric--whether I don't want to worry about it or have all the cats upright, but I can look at that as I cut stuff out before I put the "grout" on. These are excellent instructions and JUST what I needed to get out to the studio and get started! It's supposed to be a Christmas present, so I need to get moving. Thank you so much! I've downloaded the FREE pattern. Thank you!
Hi Beverly! I'm so thrilled you like this pattern and are all set to dive into it! And who doesn't love cats!! My husband, Jason, is a huge cat fan, but we can't have one because I'm terribly allergic. But he has a cat quilt as a consolation prize! Thanks for watching and happy sewing.
@ well, as the creative process goes, I’ve changed my mind. This is going to be the TOP of the quilt-the pattern is too much fun for the back-and I’ll piece some cats for a big coordinating pillow. That way she can see all the cats all the time! I’m excited about this one! Thanks so much for this!
FYI ... I think I have figured out the cutting to use 8 half yards.
Cut 1, 8.5 inches WOF. Sub cut, 8.5, 8.5,4,4,4,4,8.5
Cut 2, 4 inches WOF. Sub cut 8.5, 8.5, 8.5,8.5, 4
Cut 3, 4inches WOF. Sub cut 8.5, 8.5, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4.
If my math is correct this should give me
# 24 8.5 X 8.5
# 32 4 x 8.5
# 48 8.5 x 4
# 56 4 x 4
Have not figured out a lay out. Don't have the software for that.
Thank you for putting this out. I'm addicted to it.
Hi Ann - I haven't had a chance to check your calculations, but good for you for looking for alternative approaches. Once you decide on a size, laying out your pieces isn't too difficult - I hope you enjoy the process. Happy New Year!
This is such an enjoyable way to quilt... you have made it so easy for us that are new and old to sewing. My problem was that I kept dreaming of purses to make with all that fabric and even the scraps, LOL. Therefore, I had to watched several times and then sent it to my sisters. Love your videos and appreciate your boo, boo's. Mistakes are how we learn 💯 ❤😊THANKS FOR SHARING
Thanks so much Cathy! Tough choices between handbags and quilts.... so many choices and so many options! Just keep sewing.... just keep sewing... just keep sewing.... 🤣 Thanks for watching.
This is brilliant!! Always hated math - but you make this so easy to see how it all fits together, no matter the layout chosen. Thank you a million times for a quilt that will be one of many in my rotation for charity quilts for various groups I donate to! The fact that it can be easily adjusted to size needed will be a HUGE plus! God Bless you Karen!
That’s so kind! I’m glad you liked it, Nancy! And thank-you for your contributions to your community. Happy sewing!
Such a beautiful pattern and it fits in my math brain. I'll put it on my try later list. Now, this is not a blow off but rather a pragmatic decision made due to my health situation. I don't want to have more than two unfinished quilts at one time. I am not 50 with boundless energy, but my quilting passion (want-to) thinks it is 50.
Beautiful work and your charities are blessed.
🎶💐💖🫂
Hi Carla! Thanks for your message. I admire your restraint in managing your unfinished projects! I hope you do give this a try at some point. Thanks so much for your ongoing support.
This was a good way to use up these fabrics. That left them large enough to enjoy their designs.
Thanks Becky! That was the reason for the original design - I really wanted large pieces to show off the fabric. I hope you give this a try. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the free pattern. That‘s so generous!
Thanks Jacqueline! I hope you will give it a try.
I wish I could give this a hundred thumbs up! I've been keeping an eye out for a quilt for my bed and I think I found it here! Love, love, love it! Thanks so much!
That's so exciting Wendy! Do you have a theme, or a fabric collection in mind? I'm glad this turned up at the right time for you. Thanks for watching.
@@bitspiecesquilting I'm thinking gray "grout" and some aqua squares and rectangles. Maybe a two color quilt? Or maybe a mostly aqua fabric line with a few other colors? I'll know it when I see it!
Sounds like your vision is coming together!!
Thank you!! Great pattern. I’m putting this on my to do list. I recently purchased some high quality fabrics at a “yard sale.” I spent $200. The value is estimated at 3 times that. I feel very lucky. This pattern looks like it could work with some of the fat quarters. 👏👏
Oh wow! What a treasure trove. I love working with scraps and the unexpected and trying to put together something beautiful from a random collection of things. Have fun with your new treasures!
Omg you were given that Tula Pink Fabric awesome quilt ❤
Hi Kim! I know, right?!? When I first peaked into the box, I could hardly believe my eyes! And there is still more to work with. It's going to be fun!! Thanks for watching.
Interesting quilts especially for showcasing fabric that has great designs where you might normally fussy cut the fabric. Thank you.
Hi Gail! I hope you will give this project a try. It really is great for featuring those amazing large-scale prints. Thanks for watching.
Fantastic! I can already see how I can use this with some of the piles and piles of bits and pieces in my stash! Thanks for another great video and pattern. At least the first one will be a Quilt of Valor since most of my fabrics are red/white and blue! Oodles of Northcott patriotic lines will come first!
Hi Linda! So glad this will be useful for you and so exciting that it will contribute to your Quilts of Valor (Valour) efforts. Thanks for watching.
I love that there is so little waste and that I can make this as big as I want! It is so hard to find patterns that are easily enlarged. We have king size beds in our home and I want large quilts on all of them. Thank you!
I’m so glad you like it Lynn! I did some planning and some math for another viewer for a king size version. If you are interested, send me an email (bitsandpiecesquilting@gmail.com) and I’ll send it to you.
I made a stuffie for my granddaughter and have a lot of the pink fabric left over so I want to make a quilt to match. This will be perfect as I have fabric left over from other grandkid projects and this will make great use of those. Thank you!!
Thanks, Ann! I'm sure your granddaughter will love a matching quilt. What a lovely idea. Thanks for watching.
Those prints ❤❤
Hi Felicia! Right?!? does anyone do this better than Tula Pink??? I don't think so. Thanks so much for watching.
Thank you Michelle, what a fabulous quilt! So kind and generous of you to share this with us especially free. You have certainly put a lot of time into it. I have pre quilt also, haveny used it too much except for my hundred day, hundred blocks quilt; but I will definitely use my fabrics to try layouts for this Mathemagical quilt. You are amazing, so glad I found you through Brenda’s Mount Scrapmore.
Thanks G!! I really appreciate your kind words and support. Brenda has been a great inspiration! Thanks for watching.
This is so fun! I'm a Newer quilter, and this REALLY is COOL!🎉 I'M EXCITED to try this.
Thank you for sharing this with us, and sharing the pattern. Love it. YOU demonstrate and explain VERY well. 🍀💖🤟🙏🌹🦓
Thanks so much Liz! I hope you do give this a try and note some of the tips in the video and the pattern (like pressing the seams open!). Thanks for watching.
Brilliant! Whew, I see tile quilts, but I hadn’t caught a good tutorial for them yet. This was very easy and clear. On to finish that baby quilt that I’ve been sitting on for months because I couldn’t figure out the math!
Hi Susan! I hope you will give this a try. Don't let the math scare you - you can do it. Thanks for watching.
❤️❤️🫂 this quilt pattern. I have many fat quarters I need to use. Thank you!😊
I'm so glad you like it! Thanks for the virtual hug emoji!!
This is the pattern I have been waiting for to use up my fat quarters! Thank you!
Hi Judith! So glad you like it. Hope you are well!
Oh so pretty! I thinking Christmas fabrics. Thank you again or a fun scrappy quilt. PST, I’m a math major 😊
Hi Rhonda! I love math too - and there is so much potential to take math concepts and turn them into pattern designs. Christmas fabric would be wonderful! Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much! I've tried to figure out this math and failed horribly! But you made it easy.
I'm so glad this video helped!
I just saved this quilt pattern into my “pattern keeper” (CollaNote) and discovered I already have a few of your patterns. Somehow your patterns seem well suited to scrappiness and provide some asymmetrical interest. Thanks for all of these.
Thanks Nikki! I love scrappy quilts and designing ways to use up the bits and pieces! Thanks for watching.
That was amazing and perfect for me as our UK care leavers group make quilts that are basically elongated crib quilts.. Thank you for your generosity.
Hi Maureen! What a wonderful project to celebrate those who help. I hope you can add this pattern to your rotation for these quilts. Thanks for watching.
I love the quilt. It looks a bit confusing to me. I am a beginning quilter and have been staying in the easy quilt department. I love all the materials you have chosen for the different quilts. I am going to be brave and give it a try,
Hi Sharon! You can totally do this! Be sure to download the free pattern - there are more instructions there. And follow-along with the video as well. One step at a time and you'll get there! Thanks for watching.
Thank you first time watching.
Hi Donna and welcome! I hope you find other interesting videos on my channel (and more free patterns on my website)! Thanks for watching.
I love this pattern! Your quilts are beautiful! I have been wanting to know how to make a quilt like Mathemagical for a long time!😀
Hi Gletha! I hope you dive in and give this a try. Be sure to download the free pattern. Thanks for watching.
Mathematical what a great name and really great quilt.
As always so good that you explained which way to lay the pieces watching the binding strips following a straight path.
Thanks Claire! It can be a bit free form in terms of how to sew all the pieces together, but you definitely want to avoid the "y" seams! Thanks for watching.
Beautiful work Karen your creativity is a big inspiration to me 🎉
Thanks so much Christie! So glad you are enjoying the videos. Thanks for watching.
Love this!
Thanks Freddie! I hope you will give it a try.
@@bitspiecesquilting I definitely want to! :) It's on my list of patterns I want to try.
The Tula Pink quilt is so beautiful and fresh. I love the colors. Thanks for the pattern.
Hi Jose! They were wonderful to sew with - so bright and cheerful! Thanks for watching.
My next quilt lol, thank you for sharing
Yay Marilyn!! I hope you enjoy making it! Thanks for watching.
A honeybun would work amazing with this quilt. Thank you!
It really would - definitely simplify the cutting! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the pattern and instructions! Beginner quilting wish me luck😁♥️
You've got this Lydia! You can do it. Be sure to download the free pattern, take your time and enjoy the process.
Thank you for sharing this pattern and video. I've been wanting to make eye spy quilts for my grandchildren. This looks like the perfect pattern for that.
Hi Janet - I spy quilts would be so fun!! Picking the fabrics and fussy cutting the pieces will be an adventure. Thanks for watching.
I've never sewn with Tula Pink fabric. This seems to really allow the fabric to shine with the large pieces. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Cynthia! It is great to be able to showcase large-scale prints. Tula's fabric has a definite vibe about it - a signature style, for sure. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the free pattern. I got the fabric over the holidays that I think would be perfect for this. Can't wait to start sewing
I'm so glad you found a great fabric for it Dolly - have fun making it!
I’ve been waiting for you to let us see how to recreate your gorgeous quilt Michelle 🥰 It’s just so gorgeous ❤Thank you so much for sharing it with us. So excited 👏👏🎉 🇬🇧
Thanks Glynis! I really appreciate the enthusiastic support this project has received. It's been a ton of fun.
Awesome ❤❤❤ Thank you very great way to use fat quarters and scraps
Hi Cheryl! Mine have all had some sort of "theme" so far, but this would work really well even if your "theme" was something to guide the way you sort your scraps. Maybe "blue" is your theme, or flowers, or autumn, or beach.... anything really. I hope you give this a try. Thanks for watching.
New subscriber. Love your videos and patterns. This quilt is one of my favorites . I bought a pattern but much prefer your type of pattern that has interchangeable units. And I like to press seams open most of the time so they lie flat.
Great scrap buster. I love the Canadian fabrics used for Quilts of Valor and Tula pink fabrics.
Your instructions and careful tips and tricks are priceless. How to cut 8.5 or and size without another speciality ruler is appreciated. Practical and thrift with fabric.
Hi Gret! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and pattern. Thanks so much for watching.
Thank you for such a thorough , essy to understand and inspiring tutorial in which one can use all manner of fabric choices. The finished quilt is very easy on the eye , asymmetrical without being disturbing or restless. Definitely on my " to do" list..towards the top!
Thanks Ruth! I'm glad you like it. The ordered chaos seems to be one of my specialties! Thanks for watching.
I really appreciate your videos and how you explain why you place items where you do.
Thanks so much Ann! Thanks for your support. I hope this video and pattern inspire you to give this a try.

Very nice great to feature some special fabrics😊

Hi Michelle! Thanks for this pattern. It's a beautiful quilt and looks completely different with other fabrics. Love it!
Hi Beth - so glad you like it! The fabric choice really makes a difference. I was thinking the Tula Pink fabrics would look really good with a dark blue border (instead of white) - so many options. Thanks for watching!
I’ve watched it now and this is amazing 🥰👏👏🇬🇧
Thanks Glynis!! 💖
Very fun! Wish I had the Canadian fabric here in the U.S. Time to get my passport out and take a drive from Oregon to British Columbia! Thank you, Michelle! Marion
Hi Marion! Sounds like a road trip is in the works!!! It is Northcott fabric and really great quality.
A very clever way of making a flexible design! Those Tula Pink fabrics are so beautiful!
Thanks Future Cat!
I love this pattern! Thank you! 😊
You’re welcome 😊 Thanks for watching.
This is a great use of lovely large-scale prints! Thank you!

Once again I find your tutorials awesome and your patterns stunning I love this randomization and the ability to change things up a bit. Thank you thank you for going through the work to do the math for us. As always looking forward to your next video.
Thanks so much Loreen! I'm glad you like this. Thanks for your kind words and ongoing support.
Hi Michelle, I’m new to your channel, and will definitely look forward to your next videos! I love this quilt pattern. I’ve got so much scrap fabric, and this will be a great way to use them. I checked out your website and love all the free patterns. Thank you for that! I started quilting during the pandemic and now it’s my go-to stress relieving hobby.
Hi Andree! Welcome to my little corner of the internet. I love scrappy quilts and you will find that most of my quilts and videos focus on scraps. Not all, but lots! If you haven't seen it yet, check out the Four Patch Trellis quilt pattern and video - that one is excellent for using really small pieces. Some might argue that 8.5 inch pieces in this video aren't really "scraps" - and it's a good discussion question. Thanks for watching.
I cannot wait to get started ❤😊
Hi Anne! So glad you like this. Enjoy the pattern! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for sharing your patterns. Your creativity is a.azing
Thanks Ann! That's very kind of you. I hope you will give this pattern a try. Thanks for watching.
I love Stonehenge by Norcott! Especially the red!
Hi Sharon - I agree - it's beautiful fabric and really lovely to work with. Thanks for watching.
The quilts are all beautiful I am adding this to my list of quilts to make. Going to go through my large scrap pieces and start setting some aside.
Yay Jean! So glad you like this and hope you enjoy making this pattern. Thanks for your ongoing support.
Thank you for the pattern and the great video. All your quilts are beautiful. I have numerous fat quarters to give this a try. Love it!❤
Thanks Nancy! I hope you give this a try. Thanks for watching.
I just found your channel and subscribed. I bought some Moda fabric back in 2022 called Fresh As A Daisy. I have a 1/2 yard each of 15 different fabrics, including some larger prints. I think that this pattern is perfect for my fabric! Thank you!
That sounds like a great combination - have fun!
Thanks so much for the fantastic video and pattern!
Thanks Jenny! I hope you give this a try - it works well with all kinds of different fabrics and themes.
I bought some lovely Tilda fabric. I think this would be a good pattern for it!
Hi Christina! I love all the different ways this pattern can be interpreted with different colours, and themes and fabrics. I hope you enjoy making it! Thanks for watching.
I LOVE THIS! Thank you for sharing ❤
Thanks Linda! I hope you give it a try.

Hi Viki! Please do send a photo - I'd love to see it. And it is easy, I promise. You can do it!

I'm so glad you like this one! It has so much potential and I'm glad I was able to show the effect of different colour-ways, different themes and different background fabrics. I hope you are able to make a dent in your collection! Thanks for watching.
