I was so excited to share the project I hardly talked about the cost ! I'm always very transparent about this so you have a general idea of what a project like this could cost . I rounded up on the pricing just to be safe but here is a quick breakdown 💓
    wood and materials
    $150 2x4s we only used 12 total
    $50 brick panels (2)
    $24 mantel 2 (1×6×8) and 2 (1x4x8)
$23 Dap joint compound and scraper
    $20 screws & nails
$250 fireplace insert (amazon) linked in description.
Stain color used special walnut ( had on hand)
    total cost= $517
keep in mind this is based off the size and custom build. we also had a lot of tools on hand for this project.

Floating shelves might work better if the depth is narrow. Didn't hear how far they built it out. If you do them a little higher, then you could add the chairs underneath. An alternative to chairs is a custom rolling ottoman or two that flip up to store toys or board games but double as seating.

My vote: Built in bookcases!! My opinion is it would look high-end an set your's apart. So many people are doing these fireplaces & they all look pretty similar. I also feel it would make that wall the statement or focal point of your livingroom. Yall did an awesome job as always! You amaze me how your not afraid to pick up those tools and do the darn thing...lol!! Its inspiring for sure!😘

Yes I agree ! that's why I came up with the shelving design to begin with so that way it didnt look like everyone elses haha and then I was going to do the half ship lap and half brick but got worried it would be too busy in the small space ! so now I just need to figure out how I'm going to custom build these cabinets 💓💓

We had a custom fireplace built with the same fireplace insert. We are in Texas. I recommend, for inspection and code purposes, that you adjust access to the insert. For us we have to have access to the plug in the wall and be able to access and pull out the insert if needed. You can have the same insert and be able to change out the insert whenever needed. Excited to see the end and happy to send pics of ours if needed.

My opinion would be to add matching chairs and maybe floating shelves. You two did a great job as always! I was commenting in my head, watching you making the mantle.."Now, that is a bad female right there." "Looking hot with her hair and nails done." "Adorable outfit." "Building with tools!" That's female power right there! PLUS, such a sweet, loving personality. Absolutely love it!! This is exact what I am trying to install in my daughter! 😊

I kinda think you need to look ahead also, if you have shelf’s/bookcases on both sides you can’t do any kind of conversation area (chair facing the sofa) for when having company and then at Christmas, will you have a space for tree and so on. Just something to think about. But But But,,,,I’m not saying the bookcases wouldn’t look absolutely beautiful lol!!

  • @amywilliams127

My vote is book cases. It would create storage which would be useful for you, and it will create space for you to decorate which is what you are so good at. Seating would be pretty but once your TV is mounted, no one will want to sit there because they won't be able to see the TV. Chairs would look cute but wouldn't be practical for your family, in my opinion. With kids and dogs and a smaller house, practicality always wins. Lol. Speaking from experience! But the fireplace looks AMAZING and I can't wait to see what you end up deciding on!!!

My suggestion is open shelving on either side of the fire place instead of having cupboards underneath the shelving maybe a bench with storage underneath the bench on both sides…you’ll have seating and still have hidden storage under the bench…they can be wider for sitting or dozing up and cushions made for comfort a throw and some pillows a comfy reading nook for each of the little ones…..I love the fireplace…you guys did an amazing job….

I’ve been wanting to paint my kitchen cabinets white but was so afraid to just do it so I used white wood grain contact paper to get my visual. And I love it. Karrie, Some of the best memories are of when my husband and I worked on our house and didn't always know what we were doing. When I look around now, and admire all that we accomplished simply by plowing ahead, it's a sweet reminder of all of the fun we had, and the times we fell in love with each other all over again.
Of course, there were those moments when we thought, what have we done? We don't know what we are doing!!! LOL!

You can use zip anchors or Toggler drywall anchors to attach the studs to the wall where you don't hit the original wall framing. It's not a structural unit, so you are basically just trying to attach it to the wall so it doesn't fall over. The way you did it is just fine too. Maybe a little more work, but no big deal. Good job!

You can use the Fast and Final drywall mud. I used that on our brick and it worked like a dream. We put in a wine room/cellar in our basement under the stairs and used this technique on the walls, did the same as the back drop & accent wall to the basement bathroom vanity wall, and finally on the face of our basement bar. It turned out great. I wish I would have thought to do a fireplace in the family room area of the basement, that would have been the icing on the cake for our basement project. Your fireplace looks great!

Karrie you and your husband are amazing for not having a design plan to build a fireplace frame and put in the insert. It would be great to have cabinets and shelves. Fireplace is gorgeous and the mantle you built👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Honestly, I think you should go for extra storage with maybe closing shelves at the bottom (for things you want unseen) and open shelves at the top for decor/books. I think you have plenty of seating elsewhere in the house and it's already a small space, so it's more cozy for just your family and that's a good thing. You have your large table and your large outdoor area, so I think that it would be perfect. As far as your Christmas tree goes, it could easily go in the dining area so I wouldn't worry about that.

I’m the exact same- I’m very visual. I can’t just picture it in my head. I have to actually see it all layer out. 😊😂

I just gotta give you credit for taking on this project.
It is not a small one. It turned out very nice.
I think bookcases would be a nice look to flank the fireplace.
It would give it a more substantial focal point look.
Again, I just need to say I like watching your videos because you guys are like “regular” people trying to make
improvements and don’t get all sweaty about everything but you get nice results.

I love decor so I’d say bookshelves 😝 I believe it will make it look homey and you can add your touches of decor since now you don’t have your tv stand 👍 love your DIYs God bless Karrie ♥️

I love it, I think you should just put 2 big plants on each side and floating shelfs. I think that would look pretty.
