Watching TV with the PSP 1seg
Вставка

- In 2007, a very interesting add on was released for the PSP in Japan, letting owners watch TV broadcasts on the system. Although it only works in countries that broadcast using a specific signal type, it does in fact still work, making it a bit more practical in the modern day than something like Sega's analog Game Gear tuner. Let's take a look at the unique add on, as well as the cool colored red PSP that it came with.

A followup to this video covering the DS version of the tuner is now out. You can see it here:

I actually bought this tuner on my very first trip to Japan in 2007. It was September and PSP-2000 was just coming out I got it on launch day ( which are legendary in Japan ). Was pretty epic. And I knew it would be useless back in Europe. But I wanted to experience watching live tv on my psp
I think I would've done the same thing had I been there at the time. I was always very interested in the PSP's various features back in the day.
And I know what you mean. I had a good experience getting the Switch back when it first launched.
Hopefully this is an interesting watch! I know it’s a bit different than my usual content, but let me know if you’d like to see similar videos covering other Japanese gaming memorabilia or arcades and whatnot.
It works in South America, since if it is 1sec and the Japanese - Brazilian norm is used
- Brazil
- Argentina (Some channels don't work well and no audio)
- Chile (Some channels broadcast at 15 FPS, but they work fine)
- Uruguay (Does not detect some channels)
- Bolivia
- Paraguay
- Venezuela (Yes Same in Venezuela)
- Ecuador
Argentina and Uruguay uses 50Hz on ISDB-T
will this tuner work in Perú?

It's a shame free portable tuners never really took off here in America. Pretty quickly TV networks started mobile streaming services that were tied to your cable subscription.
3:43 Now here's an anime that screams, "Sorry Netflix or free TV elsewhere, you can't have an English dub of this show, this is our show!"
When the psp come out it was so awsome. I Played it everything. I love the psp🖤
I Still Play Mine.Love All The NFS,Playing Motor Storm Arctic Edge For The Zillionth Time Right Now,lol
That’s super cool and way ahead of its time
That is really interesting. I had no idea. Love the red PSP by the way.
Super cool that you covered this and glad it still works! Maybe I’ll think about getting it sometime for my psp…
So, does it work outside of Japan? If so, I can use it to watch Japan tv on my psp!!!
@@UltraPoyoColtunfortunately you wouldn’t be able to pick up a Japanese tv signal outside of Japan, but if you live in a country that broadcasts 1seg, you should be able to watch your local tv.
Awesome video! I recently picked one up last week and wasn't sure if it was still supported in Japan. I'm glad to know it still is!
Thanks!
And yeah, luckily since it’s still very popular to have these tuners included in cars I have a feeling it will be around for quite a while.
@@LegendOfGames quick question this works with psp 1000 or no? Thanks too
@@MerrickCamo520 the packaging for the one I have says it’s for use with PSP-2000. I’m sure it’d work with 3000 as well, but probably not 1000.
@@LegendOfGames oh darn it. Lol that's okay thanks for help ☺️ I might have to save some money to buy both now lol buy a psp 3000
Never knew that existed, it's awesome!
The Philippines is also 30fps as well but there broadcasters who do not implement 1seg nowadays to add more bandwidth for their channels.
Sony also made a similar tuner for South Korea which works with their DMB-T standard.
This is some LGR tier stuff. Damn this is awesome!
Good video Legend.
love the music!
I figure you can’t go wrong with the Katamari Damacy soundtrack.
Wow, I expected 1seg could be discontinued by now and that it would stop working, guess not. You should totaly try out the DS tuner!
I think I will try covering the DS version sometime later this year.
1seg is the mobile version of ISDB-T, it's a japanese digital TV standard. It's only used in a few countries, like Japan, and here in Brazil we also use ISDB-T, all channels have a HD transmission and 1seg. If you're in US or Europe this add-on won't work since US uses ATSC standard, and Europe use DVB-T
It's been a fair amount of time since 1Seg was put to practical use, but I can't believe that Japan and Brazil are still the only countries that have adopted it...😕
Well most countries went for the competing DVB H which fulfills the same purpose but also has an extension for satellite TV
6:05 Touge Max Drift is a fantastic game! I discovered it while living in Japan and it's a shame that it didn't come to America. Driving and controls feel great even by today's standards.
This thing is still useful in Japan, because theres alot of earthquake and other disasters, then a device with an antenna is very useful
It's weird how you think about something and turns out you're not the only one to do so. 2 days old video. Perfect.
Good quality material, english language, mote than enough informative, hands on WORKING content.
It really seems like a whole different era. Where things were created for the people to enjoy & make life simpler. Things that one would actually want instead of passive-agressively forcing people to buy proprietary memory cards & other things to get into digital only content 15 years too early.
Little on the side about psp as a multimedia device in general.
It's a shame psp didn't use bigger 4:3 screen & minidisc instead of UMD. It would have made so much more sense for media consumption. Music, photo/video & games on one portable console.
UK & japan were fond of minidisc, unlike USA, which had rushed release without proper marketing. The device itself was chunkier than SONY'S OWN d-50 discman from 1984, d100 from 86 was even more compact, slightly bigger than cd alone. By 1990 CD's were already much more affordable & widely spread.
If they had waited until the device shrink. It would have grown big for 5 years before mp3 were a thing, with proper law enforcing maybe even fending mp3's off until psp's release.
By then people would buy their kids psp's like crazy if it would have TV, music, photo, video & gaming capabilities, basically for the same price.
But enough of my ranting, thanks for the video.
Thanks!
And I think the reason they didn't go with minidisc is because it might've been easy to pirate. Not that it mattered, since it was way easier just doing it with the memory stick anyway.
This is hilarious, I’m gonna go look for one of these at Hardoff!
I’ve seen them before at various Hard-Offs, so you might be able to find one fairly easily.
Hell yeah 1seg
I love this video! Recently bought a used PSP from game store and it happened to be a Japanese 3000. Now I know what the app is for thank you!
Had no idea this existed!
It’s definitely obscure outside of Japan, especially since unlike other peripherals for the system it can’t be used in most countries.
@@LegendOfGames I should have known about it, because I got another used PSP 2000 a couple of years ago, and it‘s actually a Japanese PSP and has 1seg software on it! 😂
I'm not sure if that TV Tuner works outside Japan especially those Countries with 1seg support? oh! Philippines? yes we're still have 1seg as iSDB-T
Yep, from what I’ve seen it works there. There are several videos of the device being used in your country, so you might wanna check those out.
i would wonder if some one could homebrew it to work in the us
I live in Brazil, here we have ISDB-T 1seg, I wish I had this add-on to test it.
It might be worth tracking one down on eBay. One thing I didn't talk about in the video that I think is worth mentioning to anyone that gets one: it works much better when you plug in an external antenna (It can improve the reception dramatically,) so you might wanna get one of those along with it.
Wow the katamari sound track 😮
I had no ideia we have this signal in Brazil
What's going on with the record function probably wasn't a failure to recognize the memory unit, but rather that it may require MagicGate to work. MagicGate is a form of copy protection used by PSP and the Sony Memory Sticks, which is implemented in hardware via a component on the reader and a counterpart on the stick itself. It should go without saying that those microSD adapters don't have MagicGate hardware on them like real Memory Sticks do.
Yeah, someone else mentioned that and I’m sure it’s the reason. I wasn’t aware that was something to look out for. I mainly included that part to let people know if they get the thing they’d have better luck getting its features to work with official memory sticks, but didn’t know that was the specific reason at the time.
Also, this 1seg tuner works in brazil, argentina uruguay and peru.
I want that!
Modern phones can use a USB tuner that is fully featured and not the gimped 1seg.
I've just bought a PSP 2000 series on eBay, it came along with this tv tuner but I don't actually know wether it works in Mexico or not, cuzz I don't speak Japanese to find it out while I try to run the 1seg app in my PSP. Does anyone know if I can use this In Mexico?
According to Wikipedia, Mexico isn’t one of the countries to have 1seg broadcasts.

@@LegendOfGames Damn, ok thank you! and great video though
How about Guatemala?
This may sound pointless but I wonder if you can connect the AV cable adapter and watch TV on... your TV. By the way, I found a video from 2010 of someone using this to watch TV in Brazil. Maybe it was a problem with that person's PSP but for some reason it didn't have any sound
New psp new psp model user its time ah ah
That’s so cool!
5:38 interestingly witnessing an accident caught on dashcam
I wish that would work in New York City.
Can you do video out while using seg1 tv tuner?
Yo! I have the same red PSP as you!
Except, mine is the 3000 model
That joint expensive frfr
New model new model
I live in USA and have the 1seg so far, I couldn't read Japanese but want to learn if it's possible to scan digital channels around my area.
I could use some help to try it out.
The TV signals in the US are different than 1Seg, so it wouldn’t work there.
It would be good if there's any technique what allows it to work in US
Interesting, but now is 2022, we need gaming device which like win max 2
whats the first song in the background?? it sounds v familiar, i just cant remember the name T_T
Both songs are from the Katamari Damacy soundtrack. The first one is The Moon & The Prince
Have a nice day or have a good evening. I was able to see your video (more precisely, the one about the DS version of these small antennas) thanks to the Disney phones video by Michael MJD. He also said that the technology you mentioned is in the phones that Disney has released exclusively for Japan, and he also said that you have tried it on the DS and PSP as in this video. As for my question; you tried the DS version on the 3DS and it worked, but what about the PlayStation Vita, since it has an application called Adrenaline that provides access to the PSP system, can the PSP version also work on the Vita? Could you at least try this? 😁
It probably wouldn’t work on the Vita since they have different style USB ports. I guess you could try using a micro-B to mini-B adapter, but between that and jailbreaking your system to use that Adrenaline app, seems like a lot of work to get something like this running.
@@LegendOfGames Considering that we also need that little antenna, you're absolutely right. Unfortunately, it is. 👍
Awesome accessory and video. Whats the name of the song in the background?
All of the background music is from Katamari Damacy
@@LegendOfGames thanks!!
Few things:
• 1seg maximum quality is 320×240 at ~20 FPS, to be honest a really good quality, considered the data is channelled trough a bandwidth of 450kHz.
• Not being able to record on the PSP is due fact that the adapter doesn't have Magic Gate compatibility.
• Sony made a lot of good stuff for Japan, but being Sony, actively compartmentalizing thing is in its CV. I still remember when I had to repair my PSP in Romania and because Sony at the time supported only west Europe, even buying games through the store was nearly impossible, let alon repair it.
What? How is it only 450 kHz? It can't tune into regular 6-8 MHz ISDB-T channels with 1 MHz slices for full resolution SD content?
Cool video. I wanted to ask something : can the 1seg receiver work on a non-japanese PSP ? Do I have to download the 1seg app? I own a european/french PSP-3004 which read japanese UMD natively, if it help to know.
If you can find a way to get the 1Seg app onto it, I’m guessing it would work.
After some research, the 1seg is part of the PSP OS since ver 3.80. Maybe plugging the receiver in would make the app appear? 🤔 I'll try it one day.
@@gtb553 That might do the trick. I’d try if I had a non-Japanese PSP on hand, but unfortunately my old PSP is back in the US.
Did you have CFW installed? If I remember correctly, changing the region to Japan might help, by pressing Select and goes into the CFW menu or whatever. (If you're watching this 😅)
I was just using a Japanese PSP. No custom firmware.
This still works, wow
Did analog tv tuner extension ever exist?
Did anyone ever create their own hardware extensions (didnt find any documentation on how the interface works)
Will this work with the psp street e1000 model?
It works with PSP 2000 and 3000. I think the E1000 has the same internal specs as later models, but I don’t know about the inputs. It’d also need to be soft modded with Japanese firmware, since the 1Seg app isn’t on models released outside of the country.
Can you still watch tv on a psp ?
Please tell me
Please and thank you
Japan still broadcasts 1Seg, so it still works normally.
I'm gonna guess this doesn't work for me if I buy it and try to use it in the U.S. Florida!
Since there’s no 1Seg in the U.S., it wouldn’t work.
@LegendOfGames Damn that sucks! Is there a radio device for the psp? I have a modded PSP 2000 of that helps. Crazy cool to see your reply!
@@GoodlyPenguin there is a radio device, though I haven’t used it. I’m assuming it would work fine no matter where you are.
When is it making a comeback build in psp or antenna give it to me for free pop
what song are you using?
All of the music is from Katamari Damacy.
will i work 2024 i have one
Yeah, it should work if you’re somewhere that supports it
Will the 1Seg TVTuner Work on a PSP 100X?
It needs to be a PSP-2000 or 3000.
@@LegendOfGamesok I heard there’s a mod/hack to get it to work on a 100X
is it ATSC compatible?
It only picks up 1-Seg signals.
Does 1SEG support Freeview
1Seg is a different service/signal than Freeview, so it won’t work.
Freeview is DVB-T2
Where can i get one ?
Probably you could find one on eBay or Amazon Japan.
@@LegendOfGames any way get 1seg from south asia 😭?
@@Lumi_Land With eBay there are likely to be some sellers who will ship to you. With Amazon Japan it may be the same case (I believe items sold directly through Amazon themselves can be sent to a lot of places.)

not a port for an "external receiver" - the 1sex box itself is the receiver. The port is for an external antenna.
Sorry, I'm a bit confused about what you're trying to tell me. An external receiver would mean an external antenna. An antenna is a receiver.
