- I found a hard drive for the PSP 1000..... You shouldn't buy it.
Don't even look for it.
Its bad......
Sorry everything was kind of dark. I don't have a good set up for stuff like this.
Anyway check out my other stuff here!
/ @schnell_things
Thanks for watching!
I actually owned this at retail sometime when it released. This thing was priced like $200-$300. At the time, it was the highest and only way to get 4GB… I also remember that the HDD part would not stay in place like the battery side because the battery side actually clips in compared to the HDD side just kind of going into the back screw holes of the psp. I really loved the psp back then and really wanted the most possible space for it.
Crazy how far tech has come along that so much space can now be crammed into a small memory stick and cheaper as opposed to back then, all that being needed in an enclosure for the psp and being priced so high. I am so ashamed to have bought it 😭😭😭😭😭😭
yea, this was on that strange and weird period where devices like the PSP, pmps, cameras and stuff started to push solid state memory but said media was still just so expensive.
Meanwhile the DS version of the Datel 4GB HDD was a bit more practical, its utilization being through GBA slot making for a very secure fit. At an original MSRP of $120 in early 2006 (got mine for $30 for Christmas 2006), the 4GB Max Media Player for the DS brought MP3 and video support to the DS (which the console didn’t natively support on its own) and served as a rudimentary homebrew/emulation device (even if it was rather pathetic compared to later DS flashcarts like the R4/M3/DSTWO/Supercard/etc)
@@TurboPikachu i remember wanting the MP3 Player, which was an official flashcart of sorts. it couldnt play games but COULD play MP4 video files which no flashcart could (the MP3 player had an additional hardware decoder for that. ), flashcarts required videos to be reencoded on some kind of arcane format called DPG
You could try modding it. open it up find out the type of drive used and see how much a faster one maybe even an SSD runs and swap it out. Could prove very interesting.
Really no need for it, you can get a $3 adapter to use microsd cards in the PSP instead of the proprietary memorystick pro duo. Can grab a 512gb microsd card for like $40 and away ya go. This was bought purely for the novelty of it and not as some sort of usable addition to his PSP haha
@Agret - .... I call bullshit. I can't get anything over a 128GB micro sd to work properly on a PSP. I've even tried a 200GB and nothing boots. System will start, show icons, but won't boot anything. You're prob thinking of a Vita. I've managed to get a 1.5TB micro sd card to work with my Vita 2000. You didn't even mention cluster size when formatting, which is paramount in getting large memory cards to work properly.
Just by the size, I'm guessing it's got a Toshiba MicroDrive in it. The same kind of itty bitty hard drive that was inside the iPod mini. It's actually the exact same form factor and is pin compatible with Compact Flash. A Compact Flash to SD adapter should in theory pop right in, minus any software that may be needed on the drive partition. It would be really silly to do in 2024 but you totally could just use that thing as an SD card reader for your PSP.
@@OtioseFanaticCertainly a Microdrive, I wouldn’t bother with the SD to CF since you can just adapt Micro SD to MS. It’d be interesting to see if CF is any faster than Micro SD though
@@1RandomToaster oh yeah, no it wouldn't be at all practical. But it would be funny, and that's whats important.
I wanted this so bad as a kid, the DS had a max media player too, which I wanted. this came out during a time when flash memory was expensive and this was still cheaper than getting a magicgate card.
fellow PSP favourite console-er detected! I specifically fucking love the way the PSP and PS3 work together and the way the XMB is designed, genuinely the best console interface ever
3 things to improve your videos
1. Better lighting
2. Cutscenes (the blank times between each monologue are awkward)
3. Colorful thumbnail with big fonts
I wasn't trying to blame. Nice vid tho.
And a bright green ipad case as work surface?
@@Alxasaurus Yea, how do you know??
@@YoumyTube-em5wh Lucky guess.
It's a good format.
Glad i watched this while wearing headphones, that cat part was such a treat.
let me just wear my *Can you believe nobody bought this* Tshirt before watching the video lol
The thing that always cracked me up about this pack is that it costed like 2x the GDP of Morocco. Seriously, this thing was $50 less than the PSP AT LAUNCH. And yes, it does feel better on the model it was designed for (1000)
The worst part: It WASN'T even made with gaming in mind.
Great video man i love the stuff you do but you could use some lighting on the desk it would be awesome to do but overall 10/10 ❤
I bought one when it first came out back in the days, this is basically a CF to MSPD adapter; it was also a bang for the buck solution when there were no 4GB MSPD around (I used to work with Lexar on MSPD, the largest MSPD they had was 1GB, so 4GB with a price tag around $100~150 USD seemed promising)
I had one when I got my PSP in 2002, cracked it open a few years after, its a microdrive :)
Regarding not mentioning playing games:
At the time, there was no digital games for the PSP.
Regarding its not flash:
The biggest memory stick at the time was either 512 MB or 1 Gig.
Prices (approximately) of memory sticks when they 1st released:
1 Gig, 100 to 150 USD.
2 Gig, 150 to 200 USD.
4 Gig, 250 USD.
To be fair in 2006 the price for a 4GB memory stick was $299 so maybe depending if you just wanted semi-portable large storage for media and the price it might be a decent deal assuming the battery worked at the time.
truly one of the weirdest accessories for the console
Hey mate I've seen a few comments in here about your lighting and also you mentioned the darkness in the video. Jump onto A l i express and look up this product:
6000mAh Chargeable LED Table Lamp USB 3 Color Stepless Dimmable Desk Lamp Touch Foldable Eye Protection Reading Night Light
It's a lamp with 3 brightness settings (tap button to cycle them) and has a built in battery that charges from USB cable. The light output would be perfect for this setup of yours.
It'll be under $10 delivered to you.
there is not mention of games because back then downloading games on the psp was not really a thing. Only some demos and utilities where available so.
A similarly ridiculous accessory from the same company was the Max Media Player/Dock for the DS wich also had the same 4GB Harddrive
That makes senses. Also whenever I get a DS I'm definitely tracking one of those down!
8:52 it could be the smaller ram on the 1000
Great point! I always forget the RAM in the slims got doubled.
You got me curious so I timed it. Using Hoth Conquest in Star Wars Battlerfront 2.
From pressing "Launch" in instant action to faction select.
PSP 1000
Loading from UMD - 51.79 Seconds. (I'm sure this varies depending on the health of the drive)
Loading from the Hard Drive - 28.19 Seconds.
Loading from the Memory Stick - 14.92 Seconds.
PSP 3000 (I Don't have a 2000 but it would probably be similar)
UMD - 50.78
HDD - 32.47 (The connector did not want to go in. Really had to cram it in for it to read lol)
MemStic - 15.42
Not gonna lie. I wasn't expecting this. It's possible the increased RAM helps in other games
or emulating other systems. According to people on reddit, most PSP games don't see a benefit from the extra RAM.
Thanks for the comment! I had fun exploring this :D
@@Schnell_Things Ah! Interesting!..
oh wow, i didn't realize i was viewer 6. cool vid, nicely done :)
Nice ambient lighting on your table👍
I never knew this existed, so i thank you for that.
Basically an very bonkers alternative to Sony MemStick Pro, before *any* flash storage became affordable... Not outlandish for its intended use of video and music storage. Case in point, the PSP kinda have some edge to become someone's ultimate multimedia handheld, for the price at least. (Also, we all remember back when even movies were sold on UMDs, right?) Which would likely be cheaper than similarly sized Memory Sticks at that time.
Edit: fixing up the mess cause my phone sucks
I had no idea this thing existed
Never even knew that these existed. I just thought that there's only memory sticks.
I need this in my life! " Throws wallet at screen ... * misses *
Why was this even a thing when memory sticks pro duo went up to 16 an 32 gb.
*purr purr purr meow*
Immediately hits like
It would be interesting to replace the 4gb hardrive with an ssd
Only thing is that the speeds will be limited by what the memory stick slot can read. 😢
I never heard of this😂 but I would definitely buy it if it was including L2 and R2 buttons for playing PlayStation one games that would be awesome 🤩 yeah and I know it’s not possible but it could be so cool
This thing has been in the box for nearly 20years.... Definitely a bad battery that drained and died
On top of being slow, i bet this thing EATS battery life lol
Nice cat
Dude you need a LED ring light first. Video is so dark!
Leave the battery to charge for about 15/20 minutes and it may pop back to life
Thos is even slower than loading from umd directly xD
It's like Scott's Stash but worse
reminds me more of dank pods
but like come on this channel just started and this is just the second video on the channel (first of this type of content) if you look at the more recent videos he clearly improved a lot already
I just found my psp.. How do I update the software so I can get more emulators like ps1 games
www.pspunk.com/psp-cfw/
This is the guide that I use. It's not the most beginner-friendly guide out there but it is the most up-to-date one. Take it slow and read carefully!
If you run into problems or get confused try searching for a PSP ARK-4 installation guide. ARK-4 is the latest and best custom firmware available for all PSP models.
They also have this guide for converting PS1 games to PSP format.
www.pspunk.com/psp-psx2psp/
This requires you to own a physical copy of the PS1 game and a disc drive to dump the game. I use ImgBurn to dump all my games.
Hope this helps!
It's so chunky 😂
Lighting in video is pretty bad. Couldn't see much.
This truly was dark times for my content.
Why ?! 😂😂😂
your lighting suck though...oh boy
This was an experience
