Joe Ely- David Grissom "versus" Wilko Johnson ( Dublin session)

Поділитися

  • Опубліковано 26 кві 2008
  • (1984?) guest appearance by legendary British R'n'B guitarist Wilko Johnstone. A classic clip, and an interesting clash of cultures. Some killer sustain from mister Grissom. Please note that Wilko Johnson is the legendary guitarist for British band "Doctor Feelgood". He has no connection with the American band "Wilco". ( clue....-different spelling? )

    Holy Moly! I musta been in the mood or something because this is just so monumentally great my brain's about to explode. I love Wilko, of course, everybody does. David G, I wasn't aware of him before, but I love that dirty, raunchy style he's got. This video is pure bliss, and oh yeah, Joe Ely's in fine form too.

    I love Wilko to bits. He makes me feel good. He has the spirit of rock and roll in his dna. Sure he is not the best but that don't matter a bit.

    Yes,an interesting clash of cultures. When this gig was televised in the UK none of us thought Wilco's behaviour was particularly extreme ( by punk standards?!)... Whereas Grissom's extravagant hair -and his weird cut-off jacket- did attract some negative comment. Ely quite often supported the Clash and he was readily accepted by open minded UK audiences. Grissom's an excellent guitarist and Wilco is an excellent entertainer. Let's just enjoy something that could never happen nowadays.

  • @incongra
    @incongra  16 років тому +5

    Yes it says a lot that they came to the UK in that era and were accepted purely on their ability. I always did like Grissom, I hear a lot of Duane Allman in his playing.

    Thanks for info - just saw your other clip, great to see Grissom playing with Joe Ely, however bizarre the situation! There's a clip of David doing an Austin Texas radio acoustic session, in the interview before he plays, he states that playing with Ely was the highlight of his career - I saw them at Hammersmith Odeon ('91?) blew my mind and blew Robert Cray off the stage (who they were supporting) I so wish Ely would tour with him one more time, when they play together sparks seem to fly!

    Some amazing comments on here... I think it should be obvious to anyone that Grissom is a much more accomplished guitarist than Wilco - and I'm sure that Wilco Johnson would be the first to say so himself. Wilco just has one trick up his sleeve, though. He is totally original.. (and consequently has been massively influential).

    This just shows how more advance England was than the states in music. England (and Europe) embraced a Texas talent like Joe Ely, while our own country of homogenized monotoned, tasteless assholes ignored him.
    I have seen Joe live all over Austin through the years and he always gave 1000% at every show. His songs/music are consistently amazing.

      +John Hutchins Wilko Johnson is huge in the UK. ( and has - somewhat unlikely- appeared in "game of Thrones") He went through some medical issues in the last couple of years. I'd say that most good musicians are "under the mainstream radar", especially the ugly ones. ha ha

      Of course , anybody with some 'real interest' in twentieth century popular music has come across Joe Ely , and just as of course , many of his contempories , may they come from the Texas 'Flats' or Ashbury Heights ; come on guys , widen your horizon !!! ( me , having heard&SEEN ! Wilko in the flesh - there never was too much of it ! - when i lived in London 50 odd years ago , didn't know his name till yesterday , but most bloody obviamente it all came 'Back Home' when i saw his recent take with Daltrey : i must have been in some of those old 'movie(ng)s' ...... )))

    OKay, got to chime in here guys. I've seen David Grissom hundreds of times in Austin, Texas with the band Storyville as well as other occasions. He is one of the best guitarists you will ever see/hear. If there is a "versus" here, you need two guitarists of similar skills, even if very different in styles. Sorry, I enjoy Wilko's energy and wildness, but this is like a lion vs a housecat one on one.

  • @WrixV2

    I grew up with Joe, Jesse and the originals and several of those who jammed with Joe over the years. I met Charlie Sexton when he was 12 and playing with Joe. I was breathing music as a child, in the studio for the first at the age of 12. David is amazing as was Jesse. At some point I will write a memoir, at this time, I am still writing songs...

  • @incongra
    @incongra  16 років тому +4

    Yes I agree. Fortunately I have a scientific method of measuring guitar "awesomeness". On this session, Grissom measured 84% awesome whereas Wilco came in at only 47% awesome. So that settles THAT argument. Isn't it appalling when people think of Rock and roll as a form of entertainment?

    Agreed, I should really remove the word "versus" from the title because it seems to be inviting comments from people with the "who is the most awesome?" mentality. I think it all came about because Joe Ely was (surprisingly?) often featured at UK "punk" type gigs. ( although on this occasion the audience was bizarrely made up of cardigan wearing geriatrics). For instance he supported the Clash on numerous occasions. I think this particular gig was in Dublin, Ireland. Ely's band were required to "play host" to an unlikely sequence of scallywags; check out my "Joe Ely- oh boy" clip from the same session.

    Grissoms perm and fretboard wanking with Moore's grim and unfunky take on the blues. What a nightmare that would be. Grissom appears to have mistaken music for athletics in this clip it would be comical if he didn't go on saying so little for so long.

  • @FergR
    @FergR 15 років тому +3

    Wilko Johnson's style is based around the requirement of a live R'n'B band to crank out a big live rhythm. Dr.Feelgood, like The Pirates before them did this without the aid of a rhythm guitarist hence the lead-and-rhythm technique used by Wilko and Mick Green. Comparing the two guitarists is laughable, Wilko isn't a 'technque' twiddler....he's actually so much more. Grissom is a great guitarist though.

  • @guyac01
    @guyac01 10 років тому +14

    You guys doing the 'Wilko is best' or 'Grissom is best' seem to be missing the point... it's like comparing apples to fishes - no disrespect to either intended.

    • @guyac01
      @guyac01 10 років тому

      Personally, as an old Dr.Feelgood fan, I rejoiced when Wilko's twitching was replaced by Gypie Mayo, who, like Grissom, really learnt his craft as a 'lead gtr player' rather than as a 'stage presence'...

    • @guyac01
      @guyac01 10 років тому +1

      Guy Crossland As a 'guest', Wilco holds up pretty well in this gig, because anyone who can play well enough to admit it will agree that Grissom is scarily good here... I don't think the date can be 1984 - Grissom's PRS gtr wouldn't have been made until at least 1985, so this would probably be a late-'80s gig ? As for the 'poodle hair'... show us YOUR '80s pics... :o)

    • @brucec43
      @brucec43 10 років тому +2

      Guy Crossland Rejoice at what? Albums full of mostly mediocre, highly derivative blues songs? The good ones on those late 70's albums having to be written by Nick Lowe, their producer? After that, even fans are hard pressed to name stand-out tunes. Wilko was the songwriter, guitar was only part of his contribution, and the songs (and vocal delivery) are what matters and what is distinct.

    • @guyac01
      @guyac01 10 років тому +1

      Bruno TaTa Fair point on songwriting and the demise of Dr.Feelgood - I won't generalise, so I can only go on my own experience - I saw them live with Gypie but not after. I think Feelgood after Wilko were good, irrespective of who was doing the songwriting, at least for a while. Opinions differ, and mine has a lot to do with my age at that time, but I could equally argue that it was really Feelgood after Gypie (or maybe the whole genre of Pub-Rock...) that were past the sell-by date... :o)

    @sixaxle Bingo! Any GOOD "cutting contest" (and most of them are) is all about the audience-- building tension and releasing it. Despite Wilko's posturing, he's near silent when the music calls for it, playing dutiful, appropriate rhythm when that's appropriate, and playing the role of guitar slinger to the max when his solo turn comes (except the time near the end when, to David's surprise, he missed a cue). Brilliant top shelf showmanship and good music from everyone. :)

    Johnson seems like a fine, high-energy player - from the notes he played (not necessarily the movement and attitude) plus the use of a Tele, I’d compare him to Jesse Taylor, Joe’s original lead guitarist. The comparison I’ve always made between Taylor and Grissom is that with Taylor I’ve enjoyed many “Yeah!” moments (i.e. shouting out “Yeah” when he pulled off an especially fine solo), but only with Grissom do I experience “Holy shit!” moments. So it went here. Johnson: good, Grissom: amazing.

As you say its all about 'taste' whatever that may be. Its a cliche, but sometimes less is more. Also Im not totally against solos, just sometimes 7 minute ones in a song is too much....for me :)The list of those whove frittered talent away, as you know is endless. Most egotistical wankers could never understand such musical hierarchy. But then most egotistical wankers don't hang around the kind of company I prefer to keep. There actually is a thing in music called "mentoring" which exists elsewhere in the world too. So many UA-cam posters have no clue what respect is, let alone mentoring.

    Grissoms just another good guitarist who has probably influenced about 10 people. Wilko is a legend with one of the most instantly identifiable sounds in the history of rock. His influence towers over the entire punk movement. No contest. Legend v someone who has spent too much time practicing and none on developing anything unique whatsoever.
