I'm sure this will be watched a lot today! RIP Wilko. What a player and what a man.
I saw the Feelgoods in Bournemouth before they made it big. The atmosphere was electric. I saw Wilko many times and one of his last gigs in Poole this year. A true original. We will never see his like again.
Yup im here watching in memory, R.I.P Wilko
You're right
Yep….I’m here today. What a guitarist…..
i`m sure of that and he was it.
This man made a disproportionately massive impact on my quite sad young life. He injected energy, force, creativity, difference, idiosyncrasy and love into the grey mind of a quite depressed 20 something. He made me realise that being different is good, fun and interesting, and that basics are best, with love, passion and originality mattering so much more than endless pedals, effects, posturing and posing. His lyrics made me cry and his music made me smile - I saw him live in 2016 and I will never forget it as long as I live. A fighter, a lover and a true original - dare I say it, but truly, a legend. I really, really loved him. I will always love him - and thank you will never be quite enough. Rest in peace Wilko Johnson.
You weren't sad, you had the privilege of being a Wilko music lover.
You were chosen.
Take heart ❤️
So glad Wilco did that forcyou Harry and yes he is a true legend. Being different is what makes us special. Stay proud 👌
That's such a heartfelt post. I'm glad Wilko helped you get through whatever difficulties you were going through at that time.
I'm a guitarist, and whilst what he did isn't all of what I do, his musical style inspired me to a great extent - I never got the hang of playing with a pick anyway, and that stripped back, choppy style felt natural to me, and still does. I met Wilko in the 1990's, and found him engaging, entertaining and thoughtful. He was definitely a person 'of depth'.
Wreckless Eric knew him for many years - if you can find it, it's worth reading his tribute to Wilko that he posted on his Facebook page. It's well-written, and like your post, from the heart.
@@BackToTheBlues I saw him in that same shop after he had had his cancer operation. Looked OK. One of the very few to cite Mick Green as an influence on his whole playing style
Saw him 3 years ago at Holmfirth. Met him in the Bridge Inn afterward. Sad loss. Glad he got those extra 8 years so this lifelong fan could meet him and shake his hand. RIP
A most wonderful, gentle and extremely talented man, very British... unique in every way ❤️🙏🏻❤️
GENTLE ?!?!
He chopped off Ned Starks head !!!
😂
became an English teacher before Dr. Feelgood
I'm glad he understood the need to show us. Any wilko footage is absolute gold
RIP Wilko. Absolute solid legend.
What a man! Let's celebrate his humour, his musicianship and the fact he will (hopefully) be with us many years to come.
yeah wilko, its a very simple thing. the only problem is, nobody else can do it.
Genius reply mate.
Diitto!
Cod Zilla lol
@@Codzilla71 No, the two of them finally met and Wilko discovered that Green had a totally different technique.
Yeah right 😃
A total ONE OFF ! He's bloody marvellous is Wilko !
Always wondered how he did it, looks simple but only because it's in the hands of a master. The worst part of getting older is when your hero's and people you admire pass on and they are always unique and irreplaceable. Wilko was one of those. Luckily for us their legacy still lives on at least-R.I.P
That’s so true
Master?
You'd SHIT if you heard me play.
I tried to copy it, but it is actually very hard to do. We all know, don't we? RIP my dude.
The most underrated guitarist ever imo. I'd rather listen to him for 2mins than Clapton for an hour.
100%
I prefer to listen Wilko for an hour rather than Clapton for 2 mins.
@@beposmith6663
Well yeah, that's exactly what the OP commented?
@@mckinleymac3452 No it isn't. The essence is the same, but the time ratio is reversed. I'd prefer listening to Wilko forever and Crapton never.
Absolutely..
Ashamed to admit I'd never heard of this guy before now - - what a great sound, great vibe. Going to be obsessed with this guy for a while I suspect. RIP
Early Dr Feelgood is a great starting point
@@xebio6 cool....thanks!
Thanks Wilko - learnt more for you than I ever did in school! You'll be missed.
Ok so this is crazy. It's looks simple but he's actually accompanying himself with percussion and a bass line. And the bit where he's keeping the same strumming technique but playing a kick is amazing. No one else sounds like him...
Yes and that's such a rare skill, but with all guitar work that makes your ears perk up,always unique and in this case very!
@@simonworman7898 Rhythm & lead has been done by quite a few players in the past...as he said a number of times, he attempted to copy someone else and ended up with his own sound ...
I barely discovered Wilko Johnson..... now I'm hooked.....
WOW!!! He's appearing at the Kubix festival is Sunderland, July 2021. I don't think people realise the enormity of the occasion.
Thanks i didn't realize he was on, Sunderland resident and fan.
Wish I lived in Sunderland or somewhere close! Enjoy if you get there, & pls tell us all about it.
@@ginnyginger8686 I certainly will.
@@ginnyginger8686 he was brilliant! I wish you could have seen him. RIP to him
@@MpanzuSolos I wish I'd been there too. We can't all be everywhere tho' - wish it was possible!! ; ) RIP Wilko.
Lucky enough to see Wilco slice up the stage with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, 1981, Auckland New Zealand. Unforgettable. Rest in Peace Wilco Johnson.
RIP Wilko, I've had 3 musical ephinanies in my life and one of them was seeing a repeat of the old Grey Whistle test performance of Roxette in the late 90's as a teen and just being floored by it, I couldn't take my eyes of Wilko and marvelled at his dynamism and movement, his playing and brilliantly cool intensity, In that moment I was hooked.
RIP Wilko, a true guitar hero.
His playing has more energy than most young guitarists today.
heard most young guitarists, have we
You can not be serious??
@@acooper1128it’s called an opinion not a dick, don’t take it so hard.
@@StringSlingerSix I was just asking a question. Don’t take it so hard. You could also answered my question.
What sort of statistical analysis did you perform to come to that conclusion? Also how are you measuring “energy”?
the man who came from death to rock the Jools Holland's 2014 new years special. What a genius. Thank you sir and god bless you
A true legend. Rest easy Wilko, thanks for the magic.
I saw wilko at the Walkern sports and social club some 10 years ago. He phoned the club to say he would be a bit late on stage, as he was still waiting for his curry in town. What a lovely down to earth great guitar player. Was a great night. Your a superstar wilko
Was that a double header with Nine Below Zero!? - coz that sounds fucking familiar. I worked a few shows at that gaff. Nice little crowd you have there mate, lovely people, always ;looked after me.
When this guy starts playing "she does it right/roxette" I wanna grab a drum kit and go crazy....
His playing is raw, energetic and infectious, cant keep me feet still when WJ starts playing....
Saw him with his band in 79 at the music machine....
I was hugging the edge of the stage and he gave me that robot stare....
Still remember that image like it was yesterday....
God bless this guy, I love his music.
I just love the way this man played guitar and I love his tone on those early Dr. Feelgood tunes. His style was so unique and just amazing. Thank you so much for the great music Wilko Johnson. RIP and God bless you.
Amazing how I watched this video with a few thousand views about a month ago, and now he's passed it's got millions. Just shows people don't get the recognition they deserve until they pass
My grandfather died of Pancreatic Cancer in 2003. He was my best friend. I used to go to his grave in the middle of the night and just sit there and talk to him. It's tough, and it's hard to deal with family/friends having it. Right now one of my good friend's mother is dealing with PC and slowly, but surely, it's breakin him, as much as he doesn't want to admit it. Medicine has come far in the last 10 years since my grandfather past, so hopefully Wilko will pull through.
I understand and feel your pain. Thank- you for sharing something so personal
.X.
It's heartbreaking to think the likes of this guy and the amazing music he brought just aren't around anymore. God Bless Wilko.
Relatively unknown, grossly under appreciated. One of the greats for sure.
So sad my teenage guitar hero. Thanks for all the extra gigs J x
beautiful man. Fantastic to hear of his recovery
Amazing player and amazing you are still here Wilko following your terminal pancreatic cancer diagnosis some years ago. Top bloke
there's not many guitar players where you instantly recognise, brilliant raw playing
Great to see this. What a shop David's is! How did I miss this 10 yrs ago?!
It was no wonder Wilko mentions legendary Mick Green from The Pirates as such an influence ,he was way ahead of many back in those days utilizing rhythm & lead together while rocking the house to the ground with his bandmates. Keep on rockin it ...
Enjoy my youtube content paul..
I saw The Pirates once and the guitar player (Mick Green) was unbelievably good doing lead and rhythm at the same time. Totally brilliant to watch.
So glad I got to see him and Norman on tour in Manchester a few years back....RIP Wilko, knock'em down up there !
One bloody chord and the entire Masterpiece presented. What a splendid genius you are Mr Johnson!!!!
had the wonderful privilege of going to a Wilko gig in Ireland a few years back great Man great Guitar player RIP
God bless him.....One of England`s ever-diminishing pool of old-fashioned good guys and a gentleman too.
Wilko - a really top bloke as well as an underrated guitarist...
IANA how is he underrated?
Yeah. I loved him from the moment I heard my first blockheads album
@Timothy Lee you could be right maybe it is a UK thing, particularly Essex? Wilco has a very unique style, in the same way as nile Rogers, perhaps not technically brilliant but you know it's him the second you hear him. In the mid 70s before punk rock took off there was what is now referred to as pub rock. There were several bands around Essex at that time, most notably the stranglers, the kursel flyers (who I think became the motors?) Ian dury and the blockheads and wilcos old band Dr feelgood. Some things don't travel across the pond I guess but these guys have influenced a lot of musicians who came after.
@Timothy Lee I forgot to mention that wilco was ser ilyan payne on game of thrones, the kings executioner, you may recall that he was mute? I'm guessing that was written into the script because, as has already been said, no one outside of London would've understood a word he said?
@Timothy Lee stupid person. waste of a comment
I've been playing since 1965. Every guitarist has their own approach, style. whatever. I always loved Wilko, he's so percussive and expressive. Nobody plays exactly like him, but he sure as hell influenced a lot of youthful bashers.
Wilko the legend, Got to see him with the doctor and as a solo artist thank god. Lovely guy too. Sadly missed.
What a lovably talented guy. Privileged to have seen Dr Feelgood in '76, and to feel the full machine-gun attack of Wilco. My 1st gig. The thrill of it has lasted ever since.
Checking back into this wonderful video again. What a brilliant player he was.
So humble, an absolute legend, RIP Wilko, love you always. I'm sure Irene was waiting for you down by the jetty....❤
RIP Wliko, true legend. Thanks for the memories 🙏🏻
A great player with a massive influence. If you think that you've not been influenced by Wilko it's odds on that you've been influenced by someone who got some of their stuff from the sadly departed English master of the Telecaster. RIP WILKO.
What the hell are his fingers made from?
What a way to play guitar - absolutely genius.
Hence the red pick-guard. Hides the blood. Seriously....
@@peterobertson1457 YOu might do that for one evening........ the gig the next night????
@@davidmg1925 wilko is just built different mate
Absolutely wonderful Real honest guy ,and just ordinary RIP Wilko God bless you and your family
I know it's coming. We all know it's coming. He explains it simply, and thoroughly so we're fully ready. Then at 1:49 we all drop our jaws as some kind of wizardry happens and we all replay a 5 second bit of this video, over and over and over....
Winter is coming.
He makes it look so easy, and yet there is no one but Wilko who sounds like that.
Wilco -God bless him..One of 'the' most unique, original, exciting, compelling, enjoyable & hugely talented guitar players the world has ever had the pleasure to hear.. I know he's ill & terminal - & that makes me & I'm sure many, many people who love him - very sad BUT what a fantastic legacy of brilliantly uplifting & great great music he will leave behind !! Wilco man...You are so loved & I thank you from the bottom of my heart.. A truly amazing guy who brought happiness to millions. PEACE y'all !!! Rxxxx
Riki Newton didn't get the success they so well deserved
John miles slow down
u gonna marry him?
couldnt agree more what a hero & a great performer dont miss them live - seen them many times with you M
Please stop.
one of the great original sounding guitarists of the last 40 odd years imo.him and dr.feelgood heavily influenced my own guitar style, thanx wilko
Had the privilege to hear and see Dr Feelgood live iback in -75, during my late school days. Didn't realize then what a brilliant guitarist he was, but I sure do now! Wilko, you"re The Man! God bless you! 🎸
RIP Wilko, a massive influence and source of inspiration to a generation
Great guitar player with such a unique approach, but more importantly a good human being. Was gutted to hear of his passing.
that's what I call an original style guitarplayer . You're great Wilko .
The only thing better than a guitar talent is a beautiful human being behind it... big loss to the planet that he helped make a better place... may his soul keep shining in this universe
A real one off.
We could do with a few more Wilko Johnsons.
Brilliant guitarist and an absolute legend. RIP Wilko
Wish i could have been there, one of my all time favourite guitar players and such a polite and humble man. Wilko it is truly heartbreaking to hear of your cancer but i hope and pray that you survive it. Take care and thank you very much for all your music.

He’s playing completely clean that’s quite rare...
R.I.P Wilco. You've given us some great music
RIP Wilko, Mick Green was also my hero
I just watched it all through, couldn’t help myself…what a great guy, remember him in the 70s…fabulous,unique sound. Good one Wilko
rip wilko a unique n wonderful guitarist thanks for the great music x
He can have two operations more or three but they can not cut the pure talent out of him, Wilko we love you and you keep on impressing us constantly ❤️
descansa en paz Dear Wilco. Tengo 60 años y empecé a tocar de quinceañero gracias a él. Le vi tocar muchas veces en España. Thanks
Incredible magic! And from my local bookstore!
Always loved the Telecaster sound. So many great players including Wilko have got a distinctive style from the guitar people like Steve Cropper and Syd Barrett. So simple but you try doing it!!
Bless you Wilco. Have a pie and a pint with Lee. 😪
RIP Wilko.. always loved your style.
Learned to play guitar 🎸 thanks to Wilko ,, sadly missed
It's amazing how so much of the Dr. Feelgood sound just came from Wilko Johnson.
i think wilco is one of those people who's time simply is not up yet no matter what is on the cards. such great news to hear he is free from cancer after we all thought we would
lose him, well not yet. xx
If you can make a telecaster sound good with no effects at all, you are doing something right. It’s all in the hands :)
A Telecaster always sounds good, you don’t even have to know how to play, it will still sound good!
Astonishing playing. I always wondered how he played Rhythm AND Lead simultaneously! Great stuff. Thanks for posting. Wish I'd seen him on his recent tour. Stupidity rules. THE Live album. :-)
He hasn't "MULLERED" he's now upstairs with all of his mates fellow musicians and late fans who truly knew what we didn't about the man, your a long time "MULLERED" wilko do what you do best and enjoy it for eternity and longer... thanks for the music and so much more 👍 quite simply untouchable from a wild 70's decade right up until... sod it who cares you dares!!! exceedingly far to good to be forgotten.... massive inspiration for God only knows how many. that's the finest accolade I can give you bro!!! rock n roll just got longer and forever louder and free to them upstairs... you lucky sods!. .. "RAW AND TO MAKE YOU ROAR"... PURE GENIUS.
RIP Wilko. So talented. Was in a college band that supported the Feelgoods when I was a kid, then in recent years lived a couple of streets away and would often see him or his wife collecting his meds in local pharmacy.
Sal,
I've watched your videos at this event SO many times & smiles, laughed & marvelled every single time.
Today I watch is tinged with sadness but so happy to have seen him live earlier this year.
Thank you SO much for recording & then sharing this grounded & intimate event with us all.
Cheers 🙂
RIP WIlko. Rest easy old son.
One of the best! Thanks for everything!
Smooth sail Wilko. 😭😭😭
A true character of the music business and an absolute legend
Nadie como èl. Descansa en paz, Wilco Johnson.
Whenever I see him play, I can never reconcile what I hear with what I see him doing with his right hand. I'm not sure I'm wiser now. I'll just have to go and try it.
Love him absolutely love him he's pure rock and roll. And great live!
