Always enjoy watching your mill run. How many presets do you have in your set works. It’s a little different, watching the carriage go to your right the bandmill I ran the saw was on my left
When cutting dimensional lumber, do you account for shrinkage as the wood dries? Im not a professional builder, but I've done a lot of framing and construction semi-pro so I know a 2x4 isnt 2x4 etc. I love learning about how it all starts.
Perfectly centered isn’t required. It just cuts out better. However the heart is required. I guess it just gives them more integrity🤷 Honestly I would love turning more of it into ties. You’re just constrained to one per log:/
The big railroad tie companies like Stella jones wants a boxed heart and right now are kinda picky with what they take but some companies even started taking soft maple which is basically unheard of in railroad ties
Ash is tricky because of the beetle it would have to be heat treated to be shipped all over to kill the bugs inside so it would cost too much to have that done even if the tie company was accepting it that’s probably why you can’t sell ash for veneer anymore it’s just too Much headaches for everyone involved
Should your mesurement be 12 3/4 instead of 12 7/8 to end up with a 9" tie or am I figuring wrong? 3/8 x 2 for the kerfs=3/4 + 3" for both boards=3 3/4 then add the 9" cant for a total of 12 3/4
Yes I’m looking to fall within a certain tolerance! I like a breath over each way. And my saw kerf is only 1/4” I don’t use the wide carbide ones. And my 6/4 is an inch and 5/8’s
This was better than a Disney ride in the cab with a sawer, thanks for the interesting video.
Pretty cool set up. Keep up the good.
I'm the Sawyer and saw filer at price wood products outside Cincinnati. Would love to visit sometime.
Super improvement over your last video. You in-cab commentary and camera movement are superb! I'm curious if you watched any of Mark Galicic's videos.
Can you show the viewers how you set your guide pin since it’s really important on how the saw cuts

The sweep may be old but I bet it's tried and true technology
Я тоже уверена технология новая!

Yes!! And btw I cut my 2x4’s a full 2 inches thick!
What brand carriage do yall use
Do your customers provide you with a written description of how they want the finished product to be?
Not really. Just clear of defects like holes and rotten spots. It’s going to a railroad to place to be treated
Does the RR require the heart to be (approx.) centered? Can you make 2 ties (7x9's)out of larger logs (say 20.50" and larger)?

Is ash acceptable?

Much headaches for everyone involved
In Ontario we are suppose to take any bundle with ash even if it’s one piece with a yellow tag so anyone and everyone knows there’s ash in the bundle
Here in Ireland 🇮🇪 there gone to concrete ties it's a pity
I wonder why that is?!
@@Helmsburgsawmill mass production it's cheaper to do the concrete because you can have up to 20 to 30 moulds for the concrete
From what I've learned, also a lot less maintenance and long term costs.

The tie can be heavy up to a 1/4 inch and should be for shrinkage when it drys
I would imagine his 6/4 isn’t right on 1 1/2

With all the people on Utube that cut R.R ties, where do all these ties go
Under the rails. Sorry had to say it..

Couldn't pass that up!
Good clean humor.
I think it's a waste of that wood using them as a rail tie , however great job bro
It’s what’s paying at the moment for those log centers🤷 at least for a lot at a time
There’s 50 board ft in a railroad tie and if your log scales at 50 and you get a tie and 3 or 4 boards the sawmill is doing just fine
