As usual! The Queen of (Roving) Yarn rises to the occasion. I have known about roving yarn for decades. Funny story that yarn. I truly thought I got a hold to a bad batch like 20 years ago. Anytime me and my amazing husband go to another state I always buy some yarn from my trip. I fell in love with this gorgeous harvest color skein. But when I saw the price I almost passed out. It was a huge skein. I put it back. On our way home my husband asked me if I would get his tackle box out the trunk when we stopped at any of the rest areas, I said yes. So I opened the trunk and to my happy shock I saw all the yarn in a clear bag. He bought me 1 skein of each color she had. All roving and so beautiful. I was blown away by the gesture. He said I buy what I like when I go fishing to special lakes and such. You should be able to do the same even if at times it comes with a cost, It's not like you shop that type of yarn every day. So blessed that's for sure. 💜 Thank you Crystal for always keeping us in the yarny loop.
I love roving . It gives my projects such a unique personality - eyes they are a little hard to frog, but they forgive small mistakes. Roving is one of my favorite!
@@SusanFHeywood I almost got some Coboo yarn today online at Joann.... They had a sale plus free shipping! I try to take advantage of the free shipping when they have it. What do you like about Coboo? It's a cotton, right? I have a lot cotton yarn so I skipped it today. But..... I went ahead and got 6 skeins of Red Heart Unforgettable instead (because it's Crystal's all-time favorite yarn!) 😉 Good thing Crystal made this video because Unforgettable is a roving yarn, so I'll see what I bought! I know it's thick and thin and it's Crystal's fav, and that's about it so here goes! Lol 🙂🧶

I am just random hitting some of your "educational" vs "tutorial" videos. Really appreciate you doing them. I liked this one in particular because I have some of my Grandmother's OLD yarn. Now I know it is roving yarn. I always thought it was just very old style yarn that wasn't up to our tech-advanced methods. 😂 I used up the green, which was varied in color, thickness, and texture and rather course and scratchy. It was perfect for grass I was making for my Easter basket. Again thanks for this one, and thanks for all you do for our crocheting community. 🥰

Crystal this was so helpful !! I have been crocheting for most of my life except for the past 8 yrs, now I only knit. I usually used acrylic yarn. Just the last couple of yrs I learned about wonderful new types of yarn and now love yarn even more so. I thought roving yarn was the great big yarn. I have some of what you have and love it and didn’t realize it was roving! Mandala is one of my favorites and didn’t know it was roving. Thank you so so much for your channel!, because of you I started crocheting again after putting it down because it was hard on my hands , but you gave me a new inspiration to try again after 8 yrs! I taught myself to knit because I love working with yarn and had to do something. I have learned I can still crochet but just slower because of my arthritic hands. THANK YOU again for all you do! 💕

Crystal, I absolutely love that you are doing this yarn 101 series. I try lots of different Yarns but I probably wouldn't be able to tell you chain sponge from anything else. I just know what I like. It will be nice to finally have a bit more knowledge. :-) thank you for doing this.
When I started working with yarn I tried to knit. I loved the way that the roving red heart unforgettable looked but because I was so new I was pulling too hard and it kept pulling apart when I was trying to cast on my stitches. I watched this video and it all made sense. Eventually I stopped trying to knit (I could never wrap my head around fixing errors and keeping all the loops on the needles) and started crochet. Now that I’m about six months in, here I am again watching this video because I think I’ve decided I now love roving yarn. Thank you so much for your videos it’s amazing how much I’ve learned. My first completed crochet project was your rainbow baby blanket. I used the same yarn and it turned out beautiful. I’m now the proud owner of five furals streamline swirl crochet hooks with three more on the way so I am all in with this craft!

Thank you for doing these types of videos! I had no clue what the difference was until now, lol! I love roving yarns, and always seem to gravitate to them. The thickness/thinness of them make them unique. Each skein/ball is different and I like that. It has a more organic look to it, similar to a hand spun yarn.
I like roving yarn. I’m working with a loops and threads facet stones yarn right now and I like how the texture changes. I wish Michael’s still had that yarn... I love these kinds of videos! I know you are busy with all different kinds of videos and content you already have planned, but I love learning these lessons too 😊 I’d love to watch more of these kinds of videos too!
Roving wool yarns are my favorite. I don't have a favorite brand because I love trying new ones. I love the way the wool smells and the texture of the roving. They make beautiful shawls!
Oh I love the uniqueness of a roving I have made some matching projects of roving all bought at the same time from the same store and they were so similar and yet so different that I could have made more of the same and still enjoyed them.....I get bored if the projects are the same thing over and over, but the least favorite that can have me pull my hair out is if I make a mistake I have been known to scrap a project if I damage the fiber too much for me to feel comfortable in using, yes yes I know cutting off my nose to spite my face lol. Must be the Irish in me and the snap of temper that comes with all that lol thank you I knew what you were teaching some I knew from you some I knew from personal experience but I just enjoy listening to you talk about yarn. And when you teach you get that same smile as you are getting ready to do a giveaway and I like to see smiles! Have a wonderful week and keep safe!

Crystal, I really enjoyed this 😊💝! I absolutely love Roving Yarns also 💝💝💝! Even though they are a tiny bit harder to work with for me, it is so worth it in the end because I just love the look of it more 😊💝! It doesn't matter how many times I crochet the same project using different Roving Yarns they always look a little different & I absolutely love that 💝💝💝! I've always said that "I am a little rough around the edges", lol 😊 so maybe that's the reason. IDK exactly how to explain it. We bought an old house in 1982 & it was built as a hunting lodge by the man who created & owned "Brach Candy 🍬". Even though we live in Florida it looks like a mountain house & I fell in love with it the second I saw it 😊💝! I have always loved old antiques & anything rustic looking as they are when I find them. I just clean them up & it kills me to see someone strip them down & try to make them look new again 🙈😱🙈! Thank You so much & I can't wait for Lesson #2 😊💝!!!

I love this new series! Knowledge is essential. I like roving yarn, the more the difference in size the better for me. I like how it looks and how the differences make your item unique. I like the artsy feel of it. Please do a segment on bouclé when you have an opportunity.

I love that you are explaining what the different types of yarn are. Once I heard you speak about roving yarn I immediately checked some of my yarn that I thought was defective and YES they are roving yarns!! So I must say that in my stash my favorite Roving yarn is Red Heart Unforgettable. It is a thinner weight and I like #3 yarns best. So any yarn that goes from #4 to 3 is good for me. I also love the colors and it is not dull. I just love the way the stitches make a beautiful texturein the project. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to more of these educational videos. This is the most wanted video by me! I'm a newbie and in a bad need to learn about yarns. This information will be so helpful when buying yarn for a project. I picked up a couple of balls of chunky yarn that, black and teal with a thin thread running through it. On the outside the yarn looked just "normal". Even the suggested needle size didn’t say anything as I often use smaller hooks. Then the yarn got thicker, as if it had "exploded". At first I thought it was a mistake as the yarn would go from something beyond super chunky (bulky 7?) of "acrylic stuffing" to just the size 2 thread. It was only watching so many of your videos that I had heard the word "rowing" that it eventually dawned on me what I was probably holding in my hands. I'm not ready for such a yarn. Rather than giving up making a scarf with from it, I cut off the thickest and thinnest parts because the thick ones wouldn't go through the loop, and thin parts with only the black thread made the scarf look, well, threadbare. I don't mind if the yarn is rowing a little bit but that variation was too much: I didn't know how to handle the tension and the scarf became narrower on the thinner black stripes and wider on the blue stripes (but it wasn't regular enough to become a feature) and like I said, I had to cut off the thickest parts. Had I not liked the colours so much or the yarn so soft or the gradient yarn making such even, gradient stripes, I most likely would have given up. As it was, I made the first scarf short and kept it myself (nobody will see the utter failure once it's around the neck and the rest tucked inside a coat) and I used the rest of the 600 to make a longer scarf for my son very slowly and still frogging large parts (b****y difficult at times) trying to make it more even. Would I buy rowing style yarn again in the future? Yes, once I have much more experience, but only those ones Crystal tells don't vary in thickness too much.

I didnt even know I was using roving yarn until you started describing it. I and making an afghan out of your granny square with the bpd center. Im using loops & threads, swirl shawl, Raspberry. I love this new series! Knowledge is essential. I like roving yarn, the more the difference in size the better for me. I like how it looks and how the differences make your item unique. I like the artsy feel of it. Please do a segment on bouclé when you have an opportunity.

I love that you are explaining what the different types of yarn are. Once I heard you speak about roving yarn I immediately checked some of my yarn that I thought was defective and YES they are roving yarns!! So I must say that in my stash my favorite Roving yarn is Red Heart Unforgettable. It is a thinner weight and I like #3 yarns best. So any yarn that goes from #4 to 3 is good for me. I also love the colors and it is not dull. I just love the way the stitches make a beautiful texturein the project. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to more of these educational videos. This is the most wanted video by me! I'm a newbie and in a bad need to learn about yarns. This information will be so helpful when buying yarn for a project.
I picked up a couple of balls of chunky yarn that, black and teal with a thin thread running through it. On the outside the yarn looked just "normal". Even the suggested needle size didn’t say anything as I often use smaller hooks. Then the yarn got thicker, as if it had "exploded". At first I thought it was a mistake as the yarn would go from something beyond super chunky (bulky 7?) of "acrylic stuffing" to just the size 2 thread. It was only watching so many of your videos that I had heard the word "rowing" that it eventually dawned on me what I was probably holding in my hands.
I'm not ready for such a yarn. Rather than giving up making a scarf with from it, I cut off the thickest and thinnest parts because the thick ones wouldn't go through the loop, and thin parts with only the black thread made the scarf look, well, threadbare.
I don't mind if the yarn is rowing a little bit but that variation was too much: I didn't know how to handle the tension and the scarf became narrower on the thinner black stripes and wider on the blue stripes (but it wasn't regular enough to become a feature) and like I said, I had to cut off the thickest parts.
Had I not liked the colours so much or the yarn so soft or the gradient yarn making such even, gradient stripes, I most likely would have given up. As it was, I made the first scarf short and kept it myself (nobody will see the utter failure once it's around the neck and the rest tucked inside a coat) and I used the rest of the 600 to make a longer scarf for my son very slowly and still frogging large parts (b****y difficult at times) trying to make it more even.
Would I buy rowing style yarn again in the future? Yes, once I have much more experience, but only those ones Crystal tells don't vary in thickness too much.

I didnt even know I was using roving yarn until you started describing it. I and making an afghan out of your granny square with the bpd center. Im using loops & threads, swirl shawl, Raspberry. It is going to be soft, light, warm and gorgeous!!
