    Hello George,
    As a PS and PSE user, I have to say that I quickly reach my limits with PSE. I work a lot with the PS RAW converter, which is unbeatable on the market. PS can open all files and always runs smoothly. There are always new, excellent updates, such as AI. Despite an older computer, I have never had a crash.
    My PS + LS subscription costs $10 a month. PSE costs $100 at Adobe (Europe). The PS + LS subscription includes a homepage (Adobe Portfolio).
    The subscription is really very cheap.
    My tip: start with PSE to see if you like the program.
    If so, and you have enough experience, switch to PS.
    Then learning PS is much easier and you will be thrilled. Even as a non-professional

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  2 місяці тому +2

      I agree, PS is the best of the best. But PSE is a good alternative for people who want to buy a program outright and use it for years with no subscription. If you are using Camera RAW then LIghtroom is the perfect program.

    Thank you for an extremely helpful video, I often wonder if I would be better off using the full Photoshop, but I find it a bit daunting due to the power of it and the amount to learn. I will concentrate on learning as much as I can with Elements and you are by far the best teacher of that, plus I just purchased Elements 24, one reason was for the dark mode now available which was such a help as cataracts made it difficult to see original, although just had cataract surgery yesterday and can revert to the light mode, lol. I will also be re watching your wonderful tutorials in my time off work, especially as I can see them so much clearer 😅 - thanks for all you do George, we appreciate it x

      You're welcome Anne! Glad to hear the surgury went well. Bit by bit Photoshop Elements is adding back in things that were in it back in version 10, which is still the best version in my judgement. 10 won't run on modern computers but it had it all, Dark mode, a perfect slideshow program, layers and layer groups, etc. I think that it was really getting too close to Adobe Photoshop to make Adobe happy. PSE was originally owned by a different company and it was designed to be like a Photoshop Lite.

    Hi George, great comparison video. Another difference (correct me if I'm wrong) is that if you stop paying for the subscription you can no longer open a Photoshop file where as with the Elements version, there obviously is no such limitation. I've noticed it's possible to open a Photoshop file in Affinity Photo and still have most of the layers working so I suppose all is not lost if deciding to end the subscription.

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi Tom, you are correct, if you stop the subscription you can no longer use Adobe Photoshop. But if you are moving away from Photoshop and you want access to all the layers then Affinity Photo is a good option. Photoshop Elements also works with Photoshop files but there are limitations, the biggest one for most people is that PSE cannot work with Smart Layer Objects, which is a cool trick Photoshop can do where it can embed a photoshop file into a layer in another file. Great for templates.

    Thank you George. I use Photoshop 2024 at work, and sometimes I get a bit overwhelmed. Your video lifted a bit of the fog I experience, though I manage to navigate my way through the sometimes way too many options. My workplace has purchased license for me, so that is why I use it.
    The thing is, after having used PSE since version 7, I find that PSE fulfills all of my needs. Furthermore, with all your excellent videos in your channel + the recent lifetime sub I purchased ... right now I cannot foresee that I will ever have to use Photoshop 2024 at home. So I will keep on purchasing new Elements versions when they come out. And of course check out your videos on how to become an ever better photo editor using PSE.

      You're welcome! I agree, personally I like Photoshop Elements more than Adobe Photoshop and when I can I will always use PSE first but sometimes I just need the power of PS, so I keep it around.

      Thanks Chuck. The two main reasons to get Photoshop Elements are that it is cheaper (no subscription) and that it is easier. If neither of those is a consideration then Adobe Photoshop is the better program.

    Interesting, I noticed you also use Affinity. I got both PSE and Affinity, but did not yet learn the second one. Could you make a video explaining what features of Affinity are essential as a complement to PSE?

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  7 місяців тому +1

      That's a great idea, I will put that on my suggested video list. The main things I like about Affinity are that it is better with vector graphics, it has more options on layer styles, and it can more easily work with Photoshop layers. To be honest I also have Adobe Photoshop which is what I mostly use but Affinity is a great program suite that works well with Photoshop Elements and is ideal for people who don't want to go the Adobe subscription route.

      @@HTGPhoto Yeah, exactly, I hate subscriptions, so I also never went to the Premiere and use VEGAS, Reaper, and some other tools instead, those which still allow for one time payment options. I’ve just purchased elements 2024 to tweak my photos so I can paint from them. One of the online painting instructors had a very boring snow scene which he changed by using an overlay. He added a transparent coloured overlay to make the photo look like it had an early sunrise peeking through the trees. I cant for the life of me figure out how to do this. I asked him and he directed me to UA-cam videos. I have yet to find one that explains the process. After looking at many videos I finally found yours. I’ve subscribed and hopefully I’ll be able to figure out what I need to do. I’m assuming my screen looks a wee bit different from yours because yours is an older version of elements? I found this video extremely helpful and am looking forward to more.

      Hi Judy, You have come to the right place. This is my new channel for Photoshop Elements www.youtube.com/@HTGPhoto which I began pushing this past September. You can find hundreds more PSE videos on my other channel here www.youtube.com/@HTGGeorge, that channel now is for Gaming, but you will find over 600 PSE videos there as well.
      On your question, give me a bit more info on how the original image is different from the new image and I am sure I can figure out what he did. Did the colors change? Are any new elements added, like tree branches etc? Does it look like he overlayed another photo on top of the original? Once I have a better idea of what changed in the photo I am sure I can figure out what he did, then I will do a video here on UA-cam on how to do that. -George

      You are right, I have Photoshop Elements and the Adobe Creative Suite with Photoshop and Lightroom. If you are a professional photographer or even a serious amatuer (enter contests and stuff like that) then you probably should have Lightroom. If you just play around with photograpy then PSE will be enough, it is actually quite good. Another option is Affinity Photo which is a one time payment like PSE. I put Affinity Photo someplace between Photoshop Elements and Lightroom/Photoshop. It has far more features than PSE, but it isn't as easy to use. I still like it though and will be doing more videos about that later this summer.

    I'm still using old PS6 on an old laptop. I plan to buy a new laptop soon. Is Elements all I need?

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  4 місяці тому +1

      Great question and it all depends on how you plan to use photo editing. Basically if you are doing anything professional I always recommend Adobe Photoshop, there is nothing better and pretty much any business can afford the $10 per month. And in that I include such side hustles as desiging t-shirts, mugs, tumblers, etc. If all you are doing is stuff for yourself, or for printing on a home printer, or for family, scrapbooking, etc. then Photoshop Elements is all you need. I have both and I usually use Photoshop Elements, I only start up Adobe Photoshop for projects that need a more professional touch or that need a capability that PSE doesn't have like editing in CMYK mode.

    Thanks, George. As always a great overview. I have a question. Virtually all of your Elements tutorials involve the tools in the Expert mode. I find the Guided Edits to be a nice way to get to an outcome without having the skills needed for the Expert mode. I’m wondering if it would be helpful to others (as well as to me) to do some deep dives into the Guided Edits mode. Maybe if the same basic edit can be done in both Expert and Guided you can demo both methods along with the pros and cons of each.
    Does this make any sense?

    • @HTGPhoto
      @HTGPhoto  7 місяців тому +2

      Hi Steven, I normally don't do videos about Guided Edits here on my channel, except for new ones l will be doing shortly for a couple from 2024 because in most cases they don't give good results. Mostly has to do with the auto selections of the main subject, most auto controls in PSE are not very good. Of course I cover all of the Guided Edits in my video courses, sot they are covered, just not here on UA-cam. I mostly reserve UA-cam for doing things the right way, not the fast way. My channel is specifically about teaching those skills to become a great photo editor. My new HTG Photo Coach for Photoshop Elements does include complete step-by-step instructions for every Guided Edit in Photoshop Elements. howtogurus.com/htgphoto/

      Most of the video is about the functionality. Just a thought, maybe you should watch the whole video before leaving a comment. Personally I use both. But most of my subscribers have said that one of the main reasons they go with Photoshop Elements is that they don't like the Photoshop subscription model, they don't want to get billed every month. I have no problem with it especially since Photoshop used to cost around $1000 when it first came out, now it is only about $120 a year with the photography plan, and that also includes Lightroom.

      You can get these both from Amazon or straight from Adobe. If you want to get Elements from Adobe look at the bottom of their home page for the link to Elements Family. Their home page is all about Photoshop and Creative Suite, so the Elements ends up at the bottom. You can also get these from Walmart, Best Buy, BHP Photo, Staples, Office Depot, pretty much anywhere where you would expect to purchase software. Grocery stores don't carry these.

There are 3 listed in my home city but none have anything about Adobe on their websites. I do see it on Amazon but it's so silly to have to hunt around for a simple download. In the meantime I see literally dozens of pirate copies for sale at $5 or less. Adobe really are their own worst enemy for this.
