I’m 52 and I remember my mom… a Mexican mom, always playing this song/record when I was a young kid - this song by The Kinks, and of course, the Beatles. I always thought this was The Beatles who sang this song until I heard it in a cool little dive bar years later as an adult and I was properly corrected by the bartender - a cool 70 yr old lady. I knew of The Kinks from some of their songs in the early 80’s, but had no idea they were essentially around during the same time as The Beatles. Great song… great music from a great era.
...It’s the 1st song I’ve ever heard that use the word “ conservatively “ in a song ,....Awesome sauce ! You can’t help but get up and boogie ! lol love this song . Stay safe, healthy and let’s hope for a better today. Love ya all .
Incredible. Late 60s we struggled through this having no idea (as mentioned) and thanks to watching too much bbc and learning the lingo. Wowzers, huzzah to such sneaky political comments. In the same vein as Dedicated
Thank you I appreciate that a lot! Thanks for watching! :) (I don't have this account anymore, but I still like to come by from time to time to check up on people in the comment section. You guys are awesome)
Wow!!! You got every word correct!!! I always find mistakes. And even Those in the UK didn't get all the Lyrics correctly. That was part of Rock back then. The Lyrics are - and I'm a Songwriter - so Underrated, as is the Tune to fit the words, and The Kinks in general. Fab job, mate!!! Cheers!!! ❤️
For some reason this song has always reminded me of the vintage Old School Sesame Street cartoon segment “Bumble Ardy’s Birthday 9”; I think it’s simply the lively quality of the song that reminds me of Bumble’s nine pig or swine friends’ lively partying, especially the pigs pulling “nine kinds of dirty stunts,” from doing headstands on the table to writing on the wall and just plain trashing the house.
So interesting to listen very carefully to the hidden meaning behind the lyrics about this 'Well Respected Man' who goes to work at 9 am & comes home at 5.30pm etc etc... Mmm yes... Peggy Wood (Aotearoa)
Nothing like despising all that is healthy and ethical in our society by a doped-up generation... This song is the manifesto of all that has gone bad in the Seventies and has undermined the following generations. Vive la Bourgeosie!
Think you don't get satire at all and totally missed the point. Ray is not despising all that is healthy and ethical in society at all. He's exposing the hypocrisy of upper middle class hypocrits who maintain a false front of respectability while betraying those ethics they espouse. Mom and Dad are keeping up the pretense of a respectable marriage while taking every opportunity to whore around on each other. The well respected son is all pretense too. Everyone thinks he's oh so good ,kind, healthy in body and mind when in reality he's a slimy cad. These people ape bourgeois values but betray them. You're in favor of people like that? I'm convinced your not familiar with Ray Davies/Kinks ouvre at all .Far from being drug addled generation that destroyed everything, he is probably the uppermost promoter of traditional values. I would suggest a listen to their album" We are the Village Green Preservation Society " I'm sure it will change your mind. Waterloo Sunset and London Town and Victoria couldn't be more conservative in viewpoint.
Thanks for the info- would never have guessed it. U.K. slang is sometimes rather confusing- how do you keep track of it all? What, do they hand out dictionaries? And does anybody in U.K simply speak in regular complete sentences? 'Sing a song'- that's rhyming slang for 'So long'
I'm 72 years old, heard this song a lot when it came out. I could not understand what this guy was singing about. Now that I do, I like it eve more!
The lyrics are hilarious - but so true.

Came here after hearing this from Mr. Inbetween.
Didn't expected it to be this old song! Gold!!

Me too
Great song Great beat. Saw them in 1980.
Loved the Kinks from hard rock to these ballads, Sunny Afternoon, Dedicated Follower of Fashion. Kinks Rule!
Still sounds awesome after so many years.
Love the Kinks, and this song in particular; it seems to "strike a nerve" with me!! LOL ;D
hit their stride - deserved everything the Kinks got - some incredible writing
for their time.
Only Ray Davies could rhyme "regatta" with "get at her"!
Ranks right up there with "vernacular" and "Dracula" from VGPS as my favourite Ray Davies rhyme.
Ray Davies in the midst of his golden era. Great stuff.
Ray could start his own Religion.

😁 almost every Kinks song makes you want to dance!! Love them
Thanks same to you
Released in 1966, but if you're hearing for the first time it's new to you!
My mom used to say awesome sauce all of the time. Never heard anyone else say it so this really brought a smile to my face
Loved them . Bought the hits album in the 60s . LOLA is a Go-To Song .

My favorite Kinks song.
This song was written when I was 10 yrs old but I still think Ray was writing about me. I love my own backyard.
THANKS for the PERFECT lyrics ... much respect ...

Except for the missing apostrophes in "he's"!
@@BruceLevitan 🤣🤣🤣 I didn't get into Syntax. 🤣🤣🤣
Blast this while driving to work...
Ray, what a great song!!!!!!! Like it very much!!!!!!
the kinks... a simple power riff through a crappy amp, and boom, immediately becoming one of the greatest and most influential bands ever.

Dave and Ray Davies!
They were like the Gallagher brothers of the 60's.
Vintage Clapton

Sounds like Ward Cleaver

He sounds totally fucked up but a great song

I thought I heard "while his father paws the maid"?
@@jimm6386 I thought it was fool the maid.🙊
@@jimm6386 I think it really is PAWS. PULLS the maid makes no sense.
UK slang meaning to seduce someone.

'Fags' is British slang for cigarettes.

I think it's a jab at a stinky political figure
could it be that 'pulls the maid' is actually a misreading of 'paws the maid'?
A very odd song
To pull, as slang, in the U.K. is to have (the prospect of or indulge in) a sexual relationship with someone.
Whike his fathers ballls the maid (not pulls)
That would have been funny tho, ballls 😂❤
What does 'pulls the maid' mean?
