Such an atmospheric song that really encapsulates a time and a place. As an Australian who always dreamt of traveling to London, but didn't manage to travel until their early 50's a few years back... I knew I was in London when I stood at Waterloo Bridge at sunset humming this song to myself with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. Absolutely love this song and the kinks, they are so under rated... although, I am a Beatles gal 😉 💜
I know, me too. When I visited London for the first time on 2014. Went on the tour, crossed Waterloo Bridge, thought of Ray and Dave, and I was filled with joy.
Perfection. Possibly the best single from what was probably the best year in what was definitely the best decade of English pop. Paul Weller says this is the song he wishes he had written. David Gilmour I believe likewise. Damon Albarn adores it. Bob Geldof said he had been "chasing that sound for years". It just has something, I don't know what. If I knew what, I'd bottle it and sell it. God save the Kinks.
ctboy1989 0 seconds ago i was born in november of 1989. mid november. my parents were born in 53,54. thank you to my parents for nurturing the English in me as well as my love in 60s bands. how much i would love to go back to these times when people were proud to be ENGLISH. MAY WE NEVER FORGET WHO WE ARE. ENGLAND WILL RISE AGAIN
1967 I was 10 years old, remember listening to this, whilst staring out of the lounge room window. I am 66 years old now and the memory is still vivid. Moved to Australia when I was 14. Still regard the Kinks as one of the greatest bands ever and Waterloo Sunset as possibly the greatest song ever written
if it was not for youtube we would not be able to see all this class music from my youth now 71 dont time fly one of the good things about the internet
This takes me back to when I worked in London in the mid 60s - sitting on the Waterloo to Weybridge train late afternoon, with this song playing in my head and looking at the Thames, with the sun starting to go down... brings tears to my eyes - oh those lovely memories. ❤ Thank you for those days!
Even as a French born I really liked that song... The kinks were really underrated as a group, Beatles and Rolling Stones aside, they were fantastic, 'You really got me' is still one of my favorite song of all time !
Dirty old river, must you keep rolling Flowing into the night? People so busy, make me feel dizzy Taxi light shines so bright But I don't need no friends As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset I am in paradise Every day, I look at the world from my window But chilly, chilly is the evening time Waterloo sunset's fine (Waterloo sunset's fine) Terry meets Julie Waterloo station Every Friday night But I am so lazy, don't want to wander I stay at home at night But I don't feel afraid As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset I am in paradise Every day, I look at the world from my window But chilly, chilly is the evening time Waterloo sunset's fine (Waterloo sunset's fine) Millions of people swarming like flies 'round Waterloo underground But Terry and Julie cross over the river Where they feel safe and sound And they don't need no friends As long as they gaze on Waterloo Sunset They are in paradise Waterloo sunset's fine (Waterloo sunset's fine) Waterloo sunset's fine
Masterpiece, lyrical perfection, vocally perfection. One of the greatest ever records made in Britain, a true masterpiece by Ray Davies. Waterloo Sunset sums up London in 1967 and for me The Kinks were the amongst the very best British bands of the 1960s, if not ever.
This song stirs up so many emotions for me My uni experience at Kings right near Waterloo bridge, meeting new friends and feeling a sense of belonging I am invested in Terry and Julie… hope they stayed together
I love this song. Ray Davies is such a fantastic songwriter. The Kinks are a tad underrated I think. When listening to this song, I find myself envious of Terry and Julie.
Released one week after my 15th birthday. I loved it then and I love it now. One of the best songs ever written, it evokes all sorts of emotions. Ray Davies is the master of observational lyrics. Simply a truly beautiful song.
A Great song. Lyrically it could be written about any city that has a river running through it. My city is Melbourne Dirty old river ( Yarra River) Melbourne's sunsets fine!
The mersey. Song was originally called "Liverpool Sunset" as a kind of Beatles homage/tribute whatever. But Waterloo sunset sounds better. But you are right of course, could apply to any old city with a river through it that the person listening happens to be in.
I remember i used to fall asleep to this sometimes when me and my family was on road trips and it wasen’t like that i was already pretty tired and i found it so calming anyway i’m 18 now and i still love it so much thanks guys
Years since I last really listened to this song. An absolute gem. Many thanks @ablackcockatoo and @Jaime Velez for sharing the link to the original video. Pure gold.
Beautifully haunting song. Video put together with thought and sensitivity. Even down to "Terry and Julie" and using Julie Christie and Terence Stamp the "It" actors of the 60s in film clips from Far from the Madding Crowd. Aaaah those were the days, when singers could sing and actors could act.
You might know, but it actually was them - the famous Terry and Julie - that Ray Davies saw meeting every Friday for a few weeks from his flat overlooking Waterloo Bridge.
What a terrific song. What a fabulous time it was. London in the swinging 60s. Plus the face of Julie Christie, so cool n glamorous. And i was a teenager in the East! Unforgettable.
Ray fuggin Davis is a songwriter with no equal (Sorry McCartney its true) I was 12 when this came out. 1967 also saw "Whiter Shade of Pale" These 2 songs WERE EVERYWHERE that year. Two popular songs of perfection. LONG LIVE THE KINKS
Best song ever ! impossibly good originally called Liverpool sunset , but he knew so little about Liverpool it end up as this. love Terry and Julie in the video defo about them .
This song was described on a kinks CD as "impossibly perfect"-I totally agree
So many musicians state its their favorite song, and Pete Townshend says he can't put into words what listening to this song does to him.
Best ballad ever. I have listened to it hundreds of times since it first came out. Never get tired of it.

I’m from Texas and I feel the same about London. When I’m in London I feel like I’m home. I seldom get through this song without shedding a few tears.

Robert Cristagau called it the best song of that period hands down.
Perfection sums it up. I think 'God only knows' is along side it with 'Strawberry Fields forever.'
Could imagine what it would have ended up sounding like with EMI got hold of Waterloo Sunset. 🎷🎺 Thankfully they didn’t!

You're so right my friend,I'm a year younger than you,but this music means and sounds so much better the older I get.
One more thing my friend I live a lot closer to London than you,but hey we love London.

Hard to argue as possibly, the greatest single of all time!

This song should be the British national anthem
Agreed 👍 let’s start a petition for this as our national anthem
Asked the old man when I was about 13 in 50 now beatles or rolling stones and he said the kinks but the other 2 wasn't bad
this is one of the best in the 60´´
in my house it is!
It was the unofficial anthem of the London 2012 Olympics.
the one of best songs ever !
for me in the 10 best of the 60´
Nobody wrote a song like that before the Kinks. Love it
Stil listening in 2024
Perfect observation of life in the 60s
Remember spring of 1967 , this beautiful song was number one in UK charts.
Few pop songwriters can be called poets. Ray Davies is.
Whiter Shade of Pale, God Only Knows, Waterloo Sunset, need I say more?
one of the most important songs of its time & one of my absolute favorite song...great song
I am in awe of a 1967 music icon. Listening to this beautiful song makes me feel like a teenager in love...
The most beautiful song ever, those harmonies Wow
Really?would get rid of them personally, worst aspect of the song, very dated sound

What an amazing choice! And what a wonderful way to remember your special day.
A classic - makes me feel melancholy every time I hear it.
Thanks 🎉. A good Feeling for London is created by this song❤
true .. but Waterloo Station was kinda dumpy, so the irony isn't lost with this one
I was 13 years old when this song topped the charts. Now at 68 I still love this song!
You can't be from the UK, because this song didn't top the charts there, it only topped the charts in one country.
I was 14..... ❤
An wonderful brilliant , pop song , it is so evocative, of childhood memories .
Ray Davies , is an songwriting genius , an poet of our tinea .

Loved London as a teenager and this song brings back memories, but it also saddens me as the London i knew is no more.
It evokes sadness, melancholy and happiness almost at the same time, is that not musical genius.
I also love another of his hits, You Were On My Mind
No words to describe. the Genious
The greatest rock song ever
can you just imagine writing this song, and knowing its gonna be the song of the 60s
Was on a boat today..going under Waterloo bridge..so love this vid.❤
I saw the kinks in around 1972 to 1974 back when 3 bands were on show for maybe 10 to 12.00 dollars or less .
Such a lovely song it’s not just the melody itself but the words it’s a story

You've crafted a beautiful video for this song. Thank you!
Still writing songs for acts today. Long live the Davies brothers and the Kinks ❤️
Superb band 60s sound has been the most distintive sound that blew away the drab 50s but nothing can touch the sound of the 60s even today
Amazing enjoying the oldies.
I've never seen this clip . What an epic for Brittain, an ironic sub-plot of a 70s couple and sheer brilliance.
Another 3-Minute-Masterpiece from the great Songwriter Ray Davies! This is the ultimate Song about this place, this time, this topic, this atmosphere.
When I'm abroad and enjoying the sun...I'll play this, then I think of England 🇬🇧
