This chapter is much more interesting to me than the first chapter, which I'm thankful for because I was getting a bit nervous. I loved Danganronpa, all three games. They weren't perfect but they still grabbed me and made me invested. So far for rain code, I've been much less invested in both the characters and the cases, due to one major issue. We know pretty much nothing about the people involved in the cases. We met the prologue characters for maybe an hour or two, but at least they were distinct and it made for a good twist when they all died. Chapter 1 though, the suspects didn't even have names, and the victims were dead before we ever met them. That left Yuma, Halara, and Shinigami to carry the chapter in terms of characters, and I'll get to them in a second. Chapter 2 has a much better set up, giving us characters with complicated pre-existing relations and even with Aiko who we don't meet, we can at least see what impact her death had on everyone else, especially Kurumi. I hope the next parts continue to improve like this (please have characters that we know for more than a single chapter).
I'm aware this next bit is subjective and it's still early game, so I'm going to come across pretty negative. I'm not saying this can't improve, I'm just saying this now because this issue has nearly made me stop watching altogether multiple times, and made me take breaks just to cool off. I just need to rant. That said, god I cannot stand Shinigami. I know, I've played Danganronpa, I've liked or at least tolerated similar (not saying they're the same!!) characters before, but Shinigami feels like all the more annoying aspects of those without any of the depth. There's a reason Monokuma isn't in every scene. And this chapter has only made it so much worse. Her whole jealous shtick got old FAST, and she never shuts up about Yuma being a pervert or pathetic and stupid. That last part really isn't helping me like Yuma much either, because his lack of literally anything driving him makes me wonder why I should care about anything he's doing. He IS pretty pathetic, and Shinigami shoving that down our throat every two seconds just emphasizes it. And half the time she does it is when he's just thinking over a fact of the case, which is reasonable, so it just seems like a bullying annoyance without a care for anything. It's dragging them both down.
And honestly, Yuma dragged Halara down with him last chapter. They were shown to be a super closed off person who'd been a detective for a while and was very good at what they do. Suddenly that front cracks in the span of a day because Yuma put in some effort to solve one singular case, that they had already solved and were literally guiding him to the answers. It took four to five chapters for Kyoko to do something similar, and she was a high school student, not a professional with likely years of experience keeping up that cold exterior. Halara barely knows Yuma, and given they didn't even want to hold his hand during investigations, it was complete whiplash for them to then shake his hand and compliment him three hours later.
I'm rambling, and I apologize for being so negative. I really want to like this game, I really do but it's been a struggle to sit through a lot so far. Maybe I'll come back at the end to take back everything I said.
(oh and Desuhiko isn't off to a great start with his gross behaviour ugh, which sucks since I love his VA)
Honestly, I agree. This game has its interesting moments, and i keep watching it because I am invested in the mysteries itself, but I just don't feel attached to characters like Shinigami or Desuhiko if their main personality traits are acting juvenile. Danganropa had those characters, but the cast was significantly larger, so it felt less upfront. With the way this game is formatted, it gets a bit grating. I am invested in the mystery but not most of the characters. We shall see how the game continues from here

same, like at first i liked shinagami, but she got annoying very quick. and yuma just doing nothing about it is super frustrating too.. like do something!! he doesn't even react half the time. and desuhiko i dont like either, because he's gross. he reminds me of hifumi, which i didn't like very much either. halara's progression too was a bit odd for me as well.
i really wanna like yuma, since he seems sweet, but bro please do something your ghost is driving me and a lot of us insane.

Can we talk about how at 36:30 Karen’s profile shows a picture of her as a mystery phantom. Does this mean she killed herself or isn’t really dead? 😭
Could just be she shows up in the Mystery Labyrinth despite being dead as she was involved in the original girl Aiko's death. Also she could just be playing Possum like Hifumi did in Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc by using fake blood to fake her "death". Remember this was made by the same team as Danganronpa so I wouldn't put it past them to reuse murders from that game but change them up a bit.
I noticed this too, probably a code mistake to place it there already.
As for speculations go on this mistake, Im quite confident the story will flow to the point that Karen killed Aiko but someone else killed Karen.
So two murders to solve in the end. I honestly suspect Kurumi but I continue watching.

....before i heard it, i was thinking out loud "It's just Grape Juice in that wine bottle" (because 1: minors can't drink alchohol & 2: as an Ace Attorney Joke) then when that girl said it was Grape Juice, i said out load: "I was just Joking!"

One thing that bothers me is why would anyone kill over a lead role in a school play. It just doesn't make sense to me. I guess I'm thinking logically but then again this also a video game.
I think it’s goofy too, but perhaps due to just how prestigious this school is and how much the entertainment from this theater club is valued in this city (to give prespective, from way back when when Yuma tried out a meat bun, her learned that it was actually pretty meh, it shows that the people of this city are putting items of originally less value into higher regard in lack of better alternatives, the meat bun for food and perhaps the club in for entertainment as Kurumi described).
This ward is full of violence and there are many dead + mentally ill people, I don't think these students can think normally. The peacekeepers always make sure "nothing happened", even if those students commit a crime, without revealing it, they can still escape. No one really cares about them murdering.
And Kurumi said that this stage is the only great stage of the whole Kanai ward (the lead role is only played by students) so if they don't have the opportunity to act, they will forever lose that opportunity after graduation.

They make the name Karen sound Japanese like saying it like "Kai-rin", when we all know its just Karen.
What is Shinigami's problem? Humans for a client, not for flirting like the "superstar"

This really bugs me, both actresses drank the wine, why is it even a talking point about it being the source of poison?! Or am I missing something?
The script specifically mentions that Karen is supposed to drink first.
The killer could use that knowing that after Karen's death the play would automatically be stopped so there would be no risk of poisoning the other actress.
If only there was some kind of gameplay sequence where you solve mysteries🤔

i keep coming back here and frothing at the mouth at the theatrical inaccuracies in this case. like i know it's pedantic but THE FUCK YOU MEAN KURANE IS A SPECIALLY SKILLED ACTOR WHO ALWAYS SHOOTS FOR THE LEAD ROLE BUT ENDED UP IN LIGHTING BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T GET A LEAD ROLE- CREW ISN'T BAD ACTOR GULAUG YOU NEED SKILL TO DO ANYTHING BACK THERE, _ESPECIALLY LIGHTING_

I'm mostly annoyed by her in this chapter because I hate the trope of "female character gets catty at other female character because they talk to male protagonist." This may be a personal thing, but her whole thing with Yuma is kinda creepy to me due to how young he is, so I just play it off as her messing with him occasionally and not being actually serious. Harder to do that when she goes out of her way to make her ENTIRE PERSONALITY for a chapter be about her being jealous. She's been fine for me in the past chapters, but this is too much.

31:08 yeah I figured that would happen lol, no way we were just gonna sit for so long just for a goofy op play. The main thing I guess you could say made me suspicious was when the lights all of a sudden shut off, made my Danganronpa brain to “alright someone switched a prop for the real thing, I played that hitman game I know how it goes”. It was cool though, if someone played this and perhaps had no prior knowledge of Danganronpa games (and perhaps that one hitman mission lol) I could see them getting shocked genuinely.
Okay theory time, before I get into the theory, this is one upsetting thing I think I noticed. At 36:23 , we can view in the bottom left of Karen in the mystery dungeon. In the mystery dungeon, we only get then main Amaterasu antagonist (this time the vice director shown later), the actual culprit of this crime, and if any other crime happened them aswell. I think, that picture in the bottom left and the fact that she died in this crime, reveals that she was the one to kill Aiko. It’s obviously not supposed to show up now, but it’s like when you see a spoiler, when it’s there it’s there. Anyway for the actual theory, so I got jack and shit of who the culprit is lmao, though again I don’t think it’s possible to know now. My original idea going to the end was that the victim is random, and the Amaterasu wanted to arrest Kurumi to get her off the case and stop investigating. But due to the fact that I’m 99% sure the person that died was the killer of Aiko, it’s more likely someone targeted them. My theory is that perhaps the 3 girls worked together, with the light girl taking out the lights, the girl who snuck in doing something, and the actual girl on set did something aswell, most noticeably perhaps some how the light girl at the top told her what to do with the poisons. Idk it’s pure speculation, but if they figured out Karen killed their best friend Aiko this may be possible. That is all, let’s see if I miss a blatant obvious red flag again

I haven't finished the episode yet so I kinda want to guess what happened
I think the bottle with fake poison was actually real poison
So someone must've put real poison instead of fake one before the play began
Which means no one needed to go up to the stage during the blackout because Karen herself poured poison into the glass without knowing
But then the other girl (I forgot her name) could've also accidentally died if the poisoned glass wasn't the one Karen chose
So I think the culprit (which I suspect is Yoshiko) didn't care which one of the girls got poisoned as along as more competition was eliminated
I can't wait to see if I got it or not
Though I'm a little confused by the phantom Karen showed in her profile,maybe it means she's the one who killed Aiko
