Hello Camellia, thank you for your videos, I’m new to your channel but find them very resourceful. I am a new grad nurse, I have been a nurse for seven months. I work on a cardiac telemetry floor however we get a lot of med surg overflow. My question is how long should I wait before going back to school for my PMHNP? Also, I know you did a video on this but wanted to see if your opinion changed. Do I need to be a psych nurse to gain pysch experience before I go for my PMHNP? Thank you!

I believe that it is strictly up to you regarding when you decide to go back to school. Based on average data (which may be changing at the moment), it has taken most ~ 1.5-2 years to become proficient and comfortable starting out in nursing. (This is subjective and may not apply to all). While I don't think that you "need" to be a psych nurse prior to PMHNP, I strongly believe there is value in doing so first. Many get into psych and don't care to stay (which is one point of pursuing first). If you don't pursue first, I would suggest you pursue at some point while you are obtaining PMHNP to help hone and refine skills needed in the field of psych.
