    Thank you so much for taking the time to be so thorough. I am awed by the list of skills and applications, and I'm wondering if you are speaking from years of experience in addition to education. Do you think as a student you felt comfortable as a new grad, with adequate hours studying and practicing these responsibilities? I've been looking into both MSN and DNP programs as a CA RN currently working on a BSN. Wondering how well they prepare you for practice. I would like to open my own private practice and explore creating a team providing therapeutic care for people experiencing mental health issues.

    • @CamelliaDThePsychNP
      @CamelliaDThePsychNP 4 місяці тому

      @behrpalomo4479 Thank you for watching and for your questions. I am speaking from some experience as an RN (now 18 years), and I have been practicing as a PMHNP for now ~7 years. I think nursing school prepares you to pass the board exam, and your clinical experiences prepare you more for feeling comfortable to actually practice as a new grad. This is why I often say, "focus on your clinicals," in both your BSN and MSN programs. Application of the didactic information is key. I think your goals are awesome! You may want to consider practicing for an organization while starting a private practice, due to the learning curve, but it's completely doable and worth it! (IMO) I'd love to hear what you come up with. Keep me posted. :) -Camellia D.

    Hi Camellia, now that we are ‘past COVID’, how do you see the implementation of telemedicine developing? Has it been same as before and/or during the pandemic?

    • @CamelliaDThePsychNP
      @CamelliaDThePsychNP 4 місяці тому

      @WalterWheeler-xt9oe Thank you for your question, this is a great one! I have experienced that telehealth has remained a mainstream avenue for behavioral health care post-pandemic. In my opinion, the pandemic era simply demonstrated the usefulness and value of reaching more populations, which has translated to improved access to care. However, what I have seen change are the limitations that are being placed regarding specific treatment by telemedicine, i.e. controlled substances. I hope this answers your question. Please reach out with further questions. -Camellia D.

    Sorry, I just found this video today, and well done! I too work in an ED as a PMHNP, which is a first for the hospital I am in ( urban setting). I was in the ED initially as an Addictions fellow and when that ended, was offered a PMHNP Position at the jail doing dual dx before finally landing in ED. I have no psych supervisor support and often get bullied ( primary team) that the patient IS psych AND medically cleared, neither of which are true. I see anywhere from5-12 patients daily and am exhausted, suggestions?? And thank you for your video! Colleen C.

      Hi there! Thanks for watching and for your question. Yes, this can get tough and taxing to toggle back and forth with the medical team in this setting. Are there things that you like about the ED setting? I would say that if you are lacking support and generally dissatisfied, maybe consider the inpatient unit, (where you may find a different balance with some similarities)? Or outpatient? I'd love to hear what you come up with. -Camellia D.

    Thank you for this video, Camellia. It is very inspiring. I have been interested in becoming a PMHNP since my twenties. I got my BSN in my mid thirties after being in environmental science and horticulture because I have always been fascinated by science but I wanted to be working with people and helping them. Psychopharmacology has also been an interest of mine for many years. I have been through depression and anxiety in my life- and I came out as gay at age 19. Being able to help people find themselves and their inner strength and self worth would make me so happy. I believe this can be achieved through both medication and targeted psychotherapy with an emphasis on mindfulness and attachment theory - and others that I am keen to learn about. Have you found that you can incorporate more than just medication management, but also address the mind/body connection and maybe other modalities into your practice? It seems vital to talk to patients about the importance of sleep hygiene, healthy eating, exercise, compassion for self and others, etc.? I do realize that medications are sometimes required to stabilize a person to a place of being able to then do the work. After being a nurse in different roles for 7 years at the age of 42, I am finally ready and have been looking into PMHNP programs! Do you I’ve any advice about what to look for in a school/ program? I am leaning toward online but I’d like to have lectures and be able to collaborate with my fellow students in my cohort. Thanks again for doing this video. It means the world to this aspiring PMHNP! Brian

    Thanks for the insights on psychotherapy. As learn more about it in school, I see this as my first choice of treatment if I can possibly provide it (once trained and certified), before only prescribing, at least when I start my solo practice. One of my biggest fears going into the PMHNP workforce is being relegated by an organization to just medicate patients.

    Having been a business owner for 15 years, non-competes are sometimes necessary to protect a business’s intellectual property, proprietary processes, and client base. Despite your best efforts, and resources, to serve your employees, some people are just in it for themselves and they don’t have the integrity to behave professionally.

Regarding your first job being in LTAC, I think that depends on the population that you want to work with. Obviously, in this setting, you will see adults only, and may see more older adults. I'll definitely be going through the rest of your archives and checking out new content. Love the way you get into the details but keep the languange easy to understand. I'm so glad I waited to apply to PMHNP programs instead of just rushing in. After watching this, I have some additional criteria I hadn't even considered before. Honestly though, cost is a BIG consideration too. I'm in my 40's, have over 10 years of nursing experience (mostly in psych/substance abuse), a good amount of student loan debt (don't want more if I can avoid it), and 2 kids under 3 (started late).... So yeah, all of what you mention in this video, and if I can get through it without coming out of pocket more than $25K, even better.

    I would love to discuss salary for a new grad. I’ve seen so many job postings that start very low based on the location of course and some that start mid to high. How do you decide which is the best job aside from pay? Also, there are so many options for telehealth, how does that work if you live in another state? Do you just obtain a license for that state? I am interested in outpatient but I was under the impression I would be required to see the patient in person for the initial visit then telehealth. Would you mind clarifying for me. Thank you.

    • @CamelliaDThePsychNP
      @CamelliaDThePsychNP 11 місяців тому

      @cnic Thank you for your questions. I know pay is one of the most variable topics. It truly depends on the location. www.ziprecruiter.com/Salaries/Pmhnp-Salary may be a good place to get an idea. Pay for new grads may be slightly less or those that start higher, don't have much room to increase. Regarding telehealth, you will need to obtain a license in the state that you will be seeing patients. Also, seeing patients in-person is not always required or necessary prior to seeing patients by telehealth. This varies from organization to organization. I hope this helps? Please let me know what other questions you have. -Camellia D.

Neurology and somatic experiences are definitely interesting. Although there are some pretty unique PMHNP roles, I can't think of anywhere these fields would intersect with psychiatry or one where a PMHNP's scope may fit. Maybe sleep medicine, although there are usually FNPs/ACNP in the field. In any setting, the role of the PMHNP includes assessment, diagnosis, treatment by medications and therapy, evaluation, education. I hope this somewhat answers your question. @@CamelliaDThePsychNP Thank you! This does answer my question. I was thinking that these areas probably fit the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner role. Perhaps in the future, I’ll pursue dual certification. However for now, I can only concentrate on one thing and that is completing PMHNP certification. Thank you again for your videos. They are so informative.

    Another very informative video! Did I understand correctly that you can’t apply for the DEA certification until AFTER you complete the board certification?

    • @CamelliaDThePsychNP
      @CamelliaDThePsychNP 11 місяців тому

      @MyPMHNP Journey Thank you! Yes, you must obtain your certification first, then a NPI provider number, which you will need when you apply for the DEA. I hope this helps!

    What should I look for when reviewing Schools? What was your process?

      @Rowenatrim2000 Thank you for watching and for your question. I used the process of first determining which schools offer PMHNP path, followed by narrowing down based on the questions/considerations mentioned in this video. NPschools.com is also a good resource to start. Please let me know what other questions come up along the way. -Camellia D.

    Thank you so much for your helpful videos! I graduated in Aug 2022 and passed boards in Oct, started working for an adolescent residential treatment center and PHP, I care for the girls in our trauma program and our co-ed eating disorder program - this job is in person. I also work for a private practice (FQHC) and see telehealth patients in CA - this is a 1099 job. I am also currently very very slowly working on my own cash-based telepsych practice. - The cons so far for me have been insurance. I have no desire to work inpatient setting at all, maybe if I had started my nursing career 10 years earlier but stepping away from the acute setting as an RN and working on the community side in the NP role has been so much more fulfilling for me. And of course, I love the work-life balance. Any advice? Am I doing too much? Will I burn myself out?

    • @CamelliaDThePsychNP
      @CamelliaDThePsychNP Рік тому

      @Torri Taylor-Spencer First, congratulations! It sounds like you are off to some great things! I would say that the potential for burnout is obviously there, merely from the fact of being spread out by having multiple commitments. I advise to listen to what your body, mind, and your way of practice are telling you. In other words, if any of those things start to sway significantly away from your baseline, it may mean you are experiencing remnants of burnout. The best thing to consider while you are committing to these things is gauge when/where you have time to do "non-work related" things. I feel the same about inpatient, and slowly transitioned myself away from the ED since becoming a PMHNP. Fulfillment is also something I take seriously! Please keep me updated on your progress. I'd love to know how it goes for your private practice! :) -Camellia D.

      @@CamelliaDThePsychNP thank you so much! I have 2 patients so far for my PP one found me organically and I'm seeing her weekly for now, my other one is a referral from a friend of mine who was managing for the past few yrs so that patient would most likely be a monthly visit. Very slow but I definitely love the freedom so far related not dealing with insurance and who control of my patients and how I want treat them or how long my visits are. (Currently offering 90 min evals and 30-60 min follow-ups.) I also have my husband who was a financial accountant and now a nurse helping a lot with the PP so I am sort of lucky there. I also can feel residential is one I may burn out from more quickly because it is more demanding in all aspects.

      @@CamelliaDThePsychNP thank you so much, very helpful! I can foresee residential may not stick around for long but my support is invaluable (my boss is a child and adolescent psychiatrist) she is accessible whenever I need it, we get along well enough to work well together, her teaching style fits perfectly with my learning style in that she doesn't hover or handhold and teaches in a way that is easy for me to learn, retain, and apply in practice - straight from graduation she had me working independently 2 weeks later, so I will try to stick it but honestly outpatient telehealth and even the PHP is less stressful. There's always things going on with the kids and the pressure from therapists and insurance giving me "recommendations/their unhelpful thoughts", fighting with insurance for coverage, advocating for the kids with parents is probably the worst. The kids I honestly enjoy, just not everything else. My private practice I guess 'launched' (when I activated my PT today profile and my website) like a month ago. I have 2 patients so far, one found me organically and I see that patient weekly (child). The other patient was 'passed' to me by a friend of mine who treated the patient in a diff state, the patient is moving to my state and just needs continued management so will most likely turn into monthly visits. It's slow, I'm learning as I go and have been enjoying the process thus far. I love the freedom and autonomy and no stress for now. I do have my hubby who was a financial accountant and now nurse helping alot with the PP so that takes a huge load off as well. Overhead is pretty low since I was already paying for alot of the things anyway for my 1099.

    Hi there! I did not know about ANCC for boards for PMHNP I only thought seeing the logo CCNE was good enough because it’s accredited. I have been all over the school’s website I plan to attend and do not see ANCC! How scary. I wrote to my advisor and waiting for a response. I also went to the ANCC website to see if the school is listed there and I can not find how to look for schools. Help! I’m so scared now! Thank God I have not started any class and can back out. Feels like a scam! I wonder what are good reputable online PMHNP programs. Do you know of any? Thank you for your time.

      @Hi1027 Thank you for watching! Yes, you want to be cautious. I'm glad you are doing your due diligence here. A few schools that I know of are: Univ of South Alabama, Vanderbilt University, Eastern Kentucky University. Npschools.com may also be a good resource. You can also join social media PMHNP groups such as Facebook and ask active students in various programs. I hope this helps. I'd love to hear what you come up with! Stay in touch, -Camellia D.
