Robert Meyer I watched the Bundesliga as well and I think the only thing that still could be problematic are the "obvious errors". As seen in this video the var will be shown on screen therefore everyone in the stadium knows what is happening and there will be calibrated offside lines so nothing like Kostic's offside goal will happen. Like I said, the only thing missing are clear and precise definitions for an "obvious error" since every referee has a different perception.
Maybe, if they`re doing it right: In Germany (Bundesliga) last season even the VARs made false decisions (which is even more incomprehensible than without a VAR). There was a penalty given in the halftime (where the teams were already off the pitch) and many of the emotional/ enthusiastic moments after a goal were gone because you had to wait for the VAR.

Most of the problems so far could be solved by putting a challenge system in place. Each team has say two challenges they can make (the NFL does it by having the coach throw a flag on the field) and if they get those challenges wrong they lose the right to make any further challenges. It would eliminate players calling for VAR constantly throughout the game and it would take away the complaints (e.g. by England) that VAR wasn't used when it should have been. At present what we're effectively getting are teams being entitled to make limitless challenges by surrounding the referee making TV signs every time someone falls over in the penalty area.
VAR can only be applied successfully if it woul be like tennis video system. Each team needs to have specific amount of times requesting a review. Otherwise it will be overused by the referees like the Iran v portugal game. Stoping the game and the momentum of each team.

The rules of football are very vague thats the real problem not the VAR. If I shot the ball at your arm it might or might not result in a penalty. It depends on where your arm was, your position, the effect it had on the ball, the range from where I shot at you, your movement or simply said it depends on alot of things. The same is said of what counts as a foul or a hard tackling. Did I put my body between you and the ball or did I bodycheck you? Am I trying to focus myself before taking a freekick or am I trying to stall the game? Almost everything in the game is subjective. The only thing that got pretty clear rules is offside and even then it is a bit iffy if your toes are enough to counts as offside or how much of your legs have to cross the line. Plus at the world cup they have a calibrated offside line for the first time. Before the VAR had to eyeball it or use those lines that Tvs are using but those are not 100% correct and cant be trusted since they are pretty much just draw on the screen without using any data. This is different at the world cup.
I got no problem if an official makes a mistake if it was just him. But mistakes shouldnt happen with VAR, Cause they can replay the clip so many times to make sure. The people at fault are not the referees. Its the peoole in the studio that control VAR. As an example in the FA cup final there was a clear hand ball in the box and they used VAR to make sure but still got it wrong. So now the question is can you trust the peoole in the studio that you dont see to make a decision?

At least before I could say to myself: "The referee must not have seen what happened... he missed it." Now, it seems they deliberately refuse to look at the replay. For the system to really work, coaches should be able to challenge the referee's call just like in other sports. Perhaps they only have 1 or 2 challenges per half but the bottom line is that the coach should be able to FORCE the referee to review the play. Then and only then the system will be legit...

I hope the system doesn't fail like it mostly did in our (Belgian) league this year. It wasn't worse by any means but basically nothing changed compared to normal referee matches, we still had clear penalties not given and vice versa and we even had offside goals that weren't corrected! The system wasn't on point with camera footage and not all referees seemed to understand the rules very much. I hope for this WC that the VAR is well prepared!

Most of the errors made due to VAR are result of referees incapablity to use it.Once the technology gets better and the referees get accustomed to it the decisions will be more accurate and many on field controversies can be avoided.

On the other hand, a much less serious incident resulted in a penalty in Argentina - Nigeria match. This makes the system actually even worse than not having it. At least before I could say to myself: "The referee must not have seen what happened... he missed it." Now, it seems they deliberately refuse to look at the replay.
For the system to really work, coaches should be able to challenge the referee's call just like in other sports. Perhaps they only have 1 or 2 challenges per half but the bottom line is that the coach should be able to FORCE the referee to review the play. Then and only then the system will be legit...

National Teams work hard to qualify every 4 years to a FIFA World Cup, and to have referees' mistakes cut their teams' tournament short pisses me off. I hope the system doesn't fail like it mostly did in our (Belgian) league this year. It wasn't worse by any means but basically nothing changed compared to normal referee matches, we still had clear penalties not given and vice versa and we even had offside goals that weren't corrected! The system wasn't on point with camera footage and not all referees seemed to understand the rules very much. I hope for this WC that the VAR is well prepared!

VAR is great for the future but it still needs to improve at the moment.
It has to start somewhere, now that VAR is in the game, it can be improved. I remember how much hassle it was to get VAR into the game, so many people were against it.
Most people weren't against the system, people were just being cautious to not rush things, which is what happened in the Belgian leaugue this year. The system wasn't on point and a LOT of errors were made, we should have waited.
There will always be mistakes, but you can't see where are possibilities for mistakes, if you don't use it. And I've heard a lot of complaints by people about VAR, because they fear we could get into a system like in the US sports. Where every single pause would end up in ads. Others complained it would take away the controversy of football, which, in their thoughts, would be part of football.
Most of the errors made due to VAR are result of referees incapablity to use it.Once the technology gets better and the referees get accustomed to it the decisions will be more accurate and many on field controversies can be avoided.
