Great review as always bud and I totally agree with you the only thing that could of improved this a little bit more is a slightly bigger battery compartment but it’s not a deal breaker with a few batteries.. These are definitely worth the money and some I think, what’s the spare parts availability like?
@@beyondRC that’s good news mate, it makes these even more desirable, definitely on the list👍 I have the turbo racing mini monster and touring car on the way bud 😉
Good video Ricky! I myself received an SG1601 (rebranded HBX brushed 16889) yesterday (thanks to one of my relatives), lots of fun, I now have 2 RCs, my SG 1601 Andy beloved brushless 144001!
I actually see a great advantage of small battery tray in any model, especially smaller or lighter models or starter models. Keeps weight down, weight+velocity kills parts on impacts. On top of that, every 15-20min you give the electronics a little cooldown, get a chance to notice loose, missing, dislodged, broken parts, and maybe save further damage. Heavy battery is more prone to exit the tray and body in crash, then it's more likely to get damaged. And if you make mistake, overdischarge, damage or short a 1 big lipo, you loose more money and more capacity from your capacity pool. Same goes to faulty cells, way nicer to loose 1of 3 lipos due to faulty cell, than to loose 1 of 1 6000mAh lipo.
I've got two of the 2995 1/12 DesertTrucks from Haiboxing with the 550 motors and 3 wire servo. Easy swap over to bldc. They are impressive. I have a 3650 4700kv in one and its unbelievable. Standing backflips, 40mph wheelies, power enough to right itself when I flip it. Its a jumper. Ive got maybe $150 in each counting the brushless systems and I can put them up against any other 1/12 scale out there. I will for sure have one of these also. And I run 3s all day.
I just took some 5mm and 8mm carbon fiber rods to the nylon reinforced roll cage that came on them at stress points to beef them up. I also retapped for 3mm stainless allen head screws. Just a little time and effort with what you have can pay off in big ways.
You know Im such a big fan of this. Wrecked the body at the skatepark at the weekend but it took big send after big send and all that broke was the lexan lid. Truck needs the hbx wheelie bar that goes on the 1/16 scale trucks and costs about £5 on Banggood or Aliexpress. It can be iftted in about5 mins and all the holes are already there. With slightly bigger, better wheels (which the over-engineered drive train can easily support) you can double backflip this all day long. The metal doesnt bend and the CVDs are really thick. The drivetrain is really smooth and unlike the 1/16 trucks, the diffs are quite accessible and easy to re-fill. The battery tray is pathetic but the stock lipo lasts well and is plenty quick enough. I got 27 mph on a warmish day with slightly bigger wheels. and 35 mph on 3S. I have as much fun with this as my Arrma 3S vehicles and it only really falls short running on thick grass (as you point out). Plus Im not scared to send this to the moon as it cost less than 1/3 of those trucks. Upgraders can easily change the shock oil (ive swapped to 40WT) or put better shocks on or fit a bigger pinion (HBX make a 14T and the motor mount is pre-drilled for it). Really looking forward to your future videos on this !!
@@none-qq9lg the stock hbx shocks are actually ok and totally up to the big jumps. They’re also cheap so if you do get a “leaker” they’re easily replaceable. However, for a step up in quality (and price), the LC Racing shocks are ideal.

Yes!! Thank you! Awesome RC. The complete package. None of the usual "it's great BUT.." (looking at you WLTOYS) and better spec out the box than most 'premium' brand models that cost twice the price or more. HBX setting the bar with this one and it's going to take something special to knock this into 2nd spot this year. Good on you for taking it out in such awful conditions! Wait until Summer when the ground is dry and it will come alive. Top stuff Mr Beyond! Thanks for shining a light on this underrated car / company 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed this! I know you were waiting for this vid! Very good option out the box and it has to be no1 for sure especially when it comes to value. HBX are great they are overtaking a lot of other cheap brands!

Bought this after seeing your review. And yes they seem durable but I broke the suspension already after just 4-5 runs. The bottom part of the shock, where you bolt it to the arms, broke off. The plastic is not as durable as I thought. Replacement shock is not too hard to find but again waiting for it to ship all the way from CN.
Nice review as always Ricky. Being retired, budget is always a concern but I would really consider making this my first brushless model. The small batteries don't bother me. Like you say they are probably not expensive and would charge quickly. Thank you for the review. Cheers from the U.S.
Hey, both of you are named Rick! Anyway, Rick, I would recommend a brushless model to try out, I currently have 2 RCs, a WLtoys 144001 that I converted to a brushless “basher”, as well as an SG 1601 (rebranded HBX brushed 16889) that I got a day ago. I can say myself that brushless power is a lot of fun, I went with a small, light, and quickish Surpass Hobby 2440 4600kv motor, paired with a Surpass 35a brushless ESC, it’s a few MPH faster than stock, but the rear of the car is much lighter now due to the smaller motor, and acceleration, battery life, and heat (or lack there of) is all much better.
Nice to see that you are good and back to doing what you love 👍.I think that if they released brushless 2995 with oil shocks it would be better then this.
Where can I find nuts for the wheels for these? I went to Walmart and found some that fit but I have to use tweezers to tighten they're bigger and I can't get a socket in to tighten it like I can with others. I lost one of them and my wheel fell off. It's working great for now.
Would you recommend this over a WLToys 124018 for a beginner wanting something to enjoy together with children by reducing the top speed when they use it?

Hi. Just bought one of these after seeing your review. Delivery not for a couple of months. Im totally new to RC and just wondered if you could advise which battery I would need to get as a spare and where to get them from? Thanks.
Looks nice. What do you feel makes it better than, say, the Wltoys 124016? Now that cogging is resolved. I have one I run 3s on, as well as the brushed variant, and both of those are just amazing. My 124018 rips through grass and everything I throw at it. I do wish all of these AliExpress / Banggood vehicles would stop coming with the little dog bones that you know will bend almost immediately at least in my experience. Throw some thick plastic ones in there. At the power levels produced by these and how might they are, it’s a far smarter option.
It’s pretty awesome, super tough and durable, handles well and parts are easier/cheaper to find. The mjx is very similar. Is faster on 3s. If you want a combination of performance and good speed the mjx is unbeatable but the 901a is still a very dependable buggy. You will be happy with either 😎👍
Modelsport, wheelspin models are probably your best bet. They both have excellent customer service and can advise exactly what you need over email or phone 👍
Ive been researching to buy my first te car for bashing and this review almost made buy it, but I’m also looking into the 16889a pro… which would you think it’s a better option, which is more fun? Do you recommend another one that checks all the boxes or is a great rc car? Thanks in advanced!!
We have both (actually the Flyhal FC600 version). The smaller car is fun for screwing around and bouncing off stuff. The 901A is much better for actual offroad driving. I much prefer the 901A, but it's mostly about what suits your taste. I think the 901A is the best 1/12th scale car out there. 1/16th cars are mostly toys, even in these upgraded versions.
Oh geez... it's $199 in CAD. I paid $230 CAD shipped for a 104001 with 2 2600mah batteries, $170 CAD for a 124019 with 2 2600mah batteries... but to each their own. It looks pretty cool.
Cheap bit O' fun.! 😜 I usually leave the plastic film on for as long as I can, then peel it off for a nice new body.! It's funny because some people avoid Chinese brands but I wonder how many people have gone & bought the exact same RC only with a more familiar brand name for more money.? HBX have been sold under a few other names over the years, I'm still running an FTX Sidewinder baja (a shrunken Losi 5b copy) that was also sold as an HBX something or other a good few years ago, it's a really, really good little 2wd RC, it's got a metal transmission, it's good for 50mph & it corners like it's on rails even in the wet... It doesn't do jumps well though... Hmmmmm.🤔.. Actually, that's not strictly true, it's not the jumps.. It's MY jumps followed by MY crash landings that it doesn't do well.! 😜! 😜! Cheers for the videos mate, I've been with your channel from the start & you're doing really well, I hope you continue to grow & grow.! Stay safe out there & best wishes from Scotland.! 😜 👍🏻👍🏿👍❤️📻🕹️🔋🚙🚗🚓🚐🚕.!
Very true Alan! A lot of brands use the same RC and just change the branding such as some of the FTX models which are identical to HBX. Appreciate that mate things have come a long way! I hope so too! Cheers!
Nice, but you weren’t satisfied with the Wltoys 144002 doing 25mph on stock Electronics. This one has a brushless motor and goes 2mph more than 144002. Wltoys for the win!
The Wltoys promised 31mph out the box and achieved 24mph. So 7mph difference which is quite a bit. The 901a promised 27mph and got 25mph which is a 2mph difference which is very close to the claimed speed. Ideal conditions I think the 901a will hit the intended speed.
Mid motor design puts too much stress on the direct drive transmission. Destroyed the rear diff pinion and diff ring several times. Put a 5900kv motor on it thought it was slow and the drive train can't handle it. Off road bashing the drive train has failed every time. Poor design don't put a more powerful motor on it unless you want to strip gears. Disappointed in this truck big-time.

My channel was built from 0-12k subs doing a variety of different RC's. High end to lower end there is a place on my channel as a lot of people can't afford the xmaxx and other high end cars. If you were a regular viewer of my channel you would have seen I recently did some xmaxx vids... if you are looking for solely higher end rc cars you are on the wrong channel my friend. Feel free to move on to the next channel. I own lots of high end RC cars but they have been done to death and they aren't generally what people want to see. Kindly move on if you don't feel welcome here. Have a good day 😎👍😅
Cheap rc cars are WAY more exciting and interesting, I have exactly ZERO interest in high end cars and I love seeing cheap cars reviews, as the compromises and constraints are so much more relevant, as is the risk of getting a lemon. Way more exciting.

Hi. Just bought one of these after seeing your review. Delivery not for a couple of months. Im totally new to RC and just wondered if you could advise which battery I would need to get as a spare and where to get them from? Thanks.
get some 1600mah 2s Lipos with deans connectors unless you want to solder new connectors. The battery tray is 7.2cm x 4cm if that helps!
A couple of months? Why does it take so long?
Shipping time from China
cool rc and great review
Looks great wish they had this in true 10th scale
Where can i get it?
Having smaller battery could be a temp management thing.
It super tough and wont break like the wltoys
Do you think it better than the 1/16 Vatos q901 brushless?
Also can I put in a 3s li-po battery, or will that blow up the motor?
Really like how this looks
How does it compare to vatos q901?
Never heard of it 😂
Can you plz reply for this :)
Is this car better than mjx hyper go brushless ? I wanna buy one of them. So i want your opinion ❤️❤️
@@beyondRC oh thank you ❤️ i bought my first rc car 901a ❤️👍 its nice
Hi, does anyone know where in the UK to get a replacement battery for this RC car?
I'm a total noob to RC cars. Thanks for any advice, cheers
Modelsport, wheelspin models are probably your best bet. They both have excellent customer service and can advise exactly what you need over email or phone 👍
I want one so bad, I got the 903 and have been buying the 901a parts to upgrade it
Do they have the same chassis sir? Really like the body & the wheels of 903
@@tommychua9101 same chassis but the 901a has all metal driveline , and the 903 has plastic, the body on the 903 cracks easy also,
@@KlunkersKustoms that's cool sir. Thanks very much 😊👍
@@tommychua9101 I put a Toyota Hilux body and paddle tires on my 903, I made a video of it
@@KlunkersKustomsnice, will check it out sir. 😊
Nice!!! Great car!
Glad you like Joe!
Amazing rc cant wait to get one
What is everyone doing for upgrades on this?
In some markets the identical, rebranded bezgar hm124 works out cheaper, or at least better value - comes with 2 lipos and 2 lids.
I would like to see if it can handle 3s and the speed that 3s will bring with it. 👍🏻🍻
vid of this coming soon!
Be interesting to see how Ricky gets on. It really needs a bit more weight to get the best out of 3s but it’s a riot. Standing backflips !
Why was this rc car not bashed or tested at the skateboard park??
How much is this
Cheap bit O' fun.! 😜
I usually leave the plastic film on for as long as I can, then peel it off for a nice new body.!
Cheers!
Good buggy 😊
It is 👍😎
Like to see it on scate park
Speeds claimed, are usually on s3.
The price for what it is seems a bit high that's my only take away
Why don't you call it firebolt. ?
It's advertised everywhere as the 901a just Like a lot of the wltoys models hbx are better known by their numbers 👍
How dare you! Now I have to buy one 😂😂
Do it! They are great!!
@@beyondRC haha done!
Nice
10:20 - Grass is too messy so let's drive it in mud! 🤣

Sorry to say but that chassis is a 1/14 scale in reality.
Traxxas the worst for bullshit! Say on the box 70+ only does 44 mph need to spend more again to go box speeds
Hey bro.. I'm from Indonesia..i will subscribe your channel bro... I love rc so much... Love your channel...hope someday.. I have money to buy rc buggy.. I hope you will give me a Abandone rc car❤
What’s this I’ve come across a rc car with a prison number ffs what a joke
very common unfortunately with these cheap Chinese cars :/
Enough of the cheap rc reviews, get some high end rc cars.
