I was 13 years old when this was a hit and it has stuck with me in the intervening 53 years. Today it is still in my top five favourite songs. Looking back it is frightening how prophetically true the lyrics are.

Me too! I was 8 yrs old and whenever it played on the radio, I asked if we could turn the channel. It's sad, scary and even a bit evil and as a little kid, I picked up right on it.

It didn't scare me back then but over the decades it seems to eerily come true one line after another. Not ten thousand years but in my lifetime. That's scary.

Great song when I was growing up. So different than most songs at the time. (I just figured out what you were watching. The video you watched was from the 1927 German silent movie called Metropolis. It was set 100 years in the future (2026). It was about the rich living in utopia while the poor were doing all the hard work to keep everything functioning. It is an interesting view of the future in Germany (and the world I guess) that was made between WWl and WWll.)

The film in the video was taken from Metropolis, a silent movie made, I think, in the early 1930s. Incidentally the film was remastered years later with a Queen music score. Worth a watch.

You are right - the world is moving soooo friggin' fast - rather scary as you feel no one is saying "Wait a minute, just wait.." You guys are younger and to hear you reflect on the changes in just the last decade (for you) truly sends this message home. Thanks so much for this thought provoking reaction🦋P.S. Hi Jules, how are you doing? Sorry I haven't written for a while, lots of things happening! I had a lovely visit on Friday from one of my nephews and his family, hadn't seen them for ages, they live not far from Manchester. We had a super day, went out for lunch, lots of great chat and fun! They then headed off to Edinburgh where they were staying for a couple of days, on Saturday a visit to Edinburgh Castle and on Sunday they went to the zoo, one of the main attractions being the Giant Pandas. See on Jacob's Ridge that the goat has been named Nigel, which is fun and I'm hoping we might get a donkey chat video this week, that would be lovely. I see on the video here, that the guys were busy with lots of different things so we haven't had many reactions from them in the last two weeks. Haven't had my special request done yet, I heard from George and Patrick on 3rd March but nothing since then. Well, it doesn't really matter, hopefully they will do it sometime! All the best, Jules, hope to hear from you soon. Take care now. 😊😊

@@annemaclean6634 Hi Anne! So sorry for the delay in replying. I have been helping take care of a sick friend and only get on YT now and then. So glad that your family visited.😊 Sounds like you had a wonderful time seeing all kinds of places! I love the Giant Pandas. I used to visit them often when I lived in D.C. The name Nigel is perfect for the goat - he is adorable. I hope we see another donkey video soon:) Yes, it appears the brothers are very busy - perhaps they will be posting only once a week now. Guess we will wait and see. Hope your weather is improving - the west is still getting hit with lots of wind and rain which is creating havoc across the states as the system moves east. Take care Anne and we will chat again soon.😊

@@Jules-um4yy Hi Jules, no problem at all, I thought you might have been on holiday and I was really hoping you weren't ill yourself, I'm glad to hear you're okay. I'm so sorry to hear about your sick friend though and I do hope they're improving, it's a difficult time isn't it? Yes, it was lovely seeing my nephew and his family. After visiting me, they headed up to Edinburgh and sent me some lovely pics of their visit to Edinburgh Castle etc. It costs a lot to get in to the castle now, when I used to visit years ago, the castle ramparts etc were all free and you just paid a small amount to get in to the state apartments and see the Scottish Crown Jewels etc. All change now! Yes, Nigel is a great name for the goat, he's just a little sweetheart. I do hope we get another donkey video but as Julian says, the donkeys have to be in the mood and sometimes they're just not that interested! Regarding George and Patrick, from what George said in this video they're busy with exams, work etc so we'll need to wait and see. I hope it isn't just once a week though, Jules, that's not going to be very good for their channel, I think they need to post more often than that. Hopefully it's just short term, I'm always looking for a new reaction being posted and I'm disappointed when it doesn't happen! Regarding weather, well, it's been a pretty awful March on the whole, a lot of rain, wind, very cold etc so hopefully that will change very soon. Gosh, I saw that awful tornado in Mississippi, whole villages flattened, just terrible, these poor people. As you say, wind and rain can cause such havoc. Lovely to hear from you again, Jules, don't worry about replying right away, just whenever it's suitable for you. Take care now, all the best and we can have another chat soon. 😊👍

Perhaps you have noticed that music goes in cycles. For example when this song came out there was a lot of songs with this theme. Songs like Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In, and the next wave was all the singers/groups were singing songs about Jesus. Superstar, Spirit in the Sky, and The Lord's Prayer were all hits. Then we had the wave of Sad story songs like Rocky, or Blind Man In The Bleachers and Teddy Bear. That put us into the Disco era where all the hits had to do with one night stands, or just partying. Do Ya Think I'm Sexy, I Love the Nightlife (Disco 'Round), and This is Hot.

Want another weird recommendation? Back in the late 80s, the band XTC pulled a Sgt Pepper's by changing their name to Dukes of Stratosphear and releasing an homage to Sixties psychedelic pop titled "Chips From The Chocolate Fireball."
    It's brilliant.
Draws influences from Beatles, Stones, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd, and even a Beach Boys inspired track.

Hi guys. I've subscribed to your channel today. Mostly because a Queen reaction video popped up in my recommendations. I've been listening to your Queen reactions all evening, but I'm surprised that you haven't done a reaction to 'One Vision' there's even a documentary about the making of it. It's one of the most iconic Queen songs, that is based on how we are all the same under God. Which was inspired originally by Dr. Martin Luther king Jnrs 'I have a dream' speech. It's also a fun video, showing them conceiving it in the studio. The documentary is a little more in depth, but I'm sure your subscribers wouldn't mind that, they seem like minded. Plus the documentary is only about the length of the 'Live Aid' video. So it's well within what people will watch. Please, please, please, do that reaction. I'm sure it will end up being one of your most viewed reactions. But check it out for yourselves first if you don't believe me. Also please do a reaction to 'Love Of My Life' in Rio. I know you've done the Wembley one, but the Rio one has a quarter of a million Portuguese speaking people singing to Freddy and chanting for Brian May. It's spine tingling. Anyhow, I'm going back to your channel for some excellent reactions to other bands too. Not sure if you've done Phil Collins 'Feel it in the air tonight' but you'll absolutely love that too. Thanks from the UK. Andy. Oh, and as a side note. I was lucky enough to see Queen at Wembley at the 'Live Aid' concert (I'm in my mid 50's). One of my best experiences ever. Plus I grew up following Led Zeppelin, they used to play one of my local pubs regularly when they were starting out, before they became iconic. I'm blessed that way. The birth of my 2 kids and Grand Daughter came close though lol.

Throughout the song is the theme of technological advancement and the loss of humanity. Every thousand years a part of humanity is erased--independent will (all you think, do and say is in a pill); senses (won't need your eyes or teeth); autonomous movement (a machine controls your arms and legs); organic family (pick your sons and daughters from glass tubes).
This song can be taken as a warning: the more we pursue technological/scientific progress, the greater our chances of abandoning our humanity.

Are you watching the video that has clips from a 20s silent film called "Metropolis?" This is such a great song.

THAT is exactly why I could wait to see their reaction to those images which have produced a wide variety of responses from laughter to genuine fear and horror.
I love these guys but I have never seen them without seeing a video accompanying the song.
So that is where those images come from. 100 years on. Wow from South East London.

@Isleofskye I noticed on the U2 Pride reaction recently they also didn't show the video, although they were looking at the video. Idk why they started doing that.

@@PrimitiveFilmGroup Oh ! Dear! I know we don't always realize what goes on behind the scenes but, on the surface, it seems a crazy decision because we can't share the enjoyment of the video and, also, we don't know what is going on in the video what they are seeing and commenting on.
It's, particularly, frustrating because when you click on this video, you can actually see the 1920 Film shot, which I assumed, they would allow us to see.
As I said, it's like just seeing 2 Guys on the Underground laughing at something on their phones and we are excluded from the experience.

This song was scary to hear back then. Who would have thought that some of what the song is about is reality. Soon, parents will be able to pick the color of their unborn child's eyes. And, remember the test tube baby? Pretty scary.

Just watching you is like watching 2 people on the Underground/Subway/Tube and not seeing what they are reacting to.
