Rhythmic whipping is actually a strategic thing with stuff like marching and labor. Ever go on a run and start focusing on the rhythm of your breath? In a march, it keeps them in constant movement and in coordination. Its like a twisted, evil drumset.

My old man, rest his soul, always told me about him and his coworkers (worked at a metal mill) singing this together as they worked. Worked in a factory myself and I understand how it fit so well.
During basic training in the late 90's we got it a LOT of trouble for using this as a marching cadence when allowed to march without immediate supervision. It was SO worth it :)
The Jackson movies paid homage to it even, in the extended cut they include the part where they follow the orcs around, and just before they get caught by the marching troupe you can hear their footsteps and they mimic the sound of the drums here.
What they were doing was making a catchy song humanizing a fantasy race. But really, the people on drawing comparisons in the last hundred years are kidding themselves. This is for more relatable to feudal societies and "lords" forcing peasants into armies.

I honestly think Tolkien would have whole heartedly approved of this song. Music and poetry are sprinkled throughout The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books and it would have gone well along side "Down, Down to Goblin Town" which is a song he created and wrote into 'The Hobbit'.
Tolkien describes everything the dark faction has in language, culture and culinary as foul. This music has a self depreciating humor that's too high spirit for Mordor.

The fact that hobits can be mistaken for orcs and that this movie, while not selling it perfectly, still manages to convey it fairly well like when Samwise is stamping and singing is really interesting.

I'm impressed by the orcs sense of harmony. During the chorus, there are two distinct lines/melodies being repeated; one in a lower register and one in a higher register. The choir of Mordor really had it going on.

Kids today don't realize that back in my day, if us old nerds wanted to watch anything adapted from Tolkien, it was the Rankin & Bass Hobbit TV special, then the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings movie that only went through the end of The Two Towers, then back to TV for the Rankin & Bass Return of the King special. Giving us things like "Frodo of the Nine Fingers", "Where There's a Whip There's a Way", "Far Over the Misty Mountain Cold", and other such classics. Now I need to go defend my lawn, there's orcs on it again. Off! Off I Say!

Is this the cartoon's way of humanizing the Orcs since Tolkien stated that one of his regrets was that he didn't give the Orcs much sympathy and that they were treated like slaves that often didn't get a choice rather being evil.
I've always found some of the most interesting parts of the Lord of the Rings is when the orcs get to talk and share some of their thoughts, like when merry and Pippen are overhearing the three different groups of orcs bickering (Urak-hai from Isengard, Black Uruks from mordor and the smaller orcs from the Mines of Moria), when Sam overhears Gorebag and Shagrat, or in gorgoroth when Sam and frodo overhear the large soldier and the tracker.... It makes the orcs more than mindless drones and I think it would have been cool to hear a lot more of that and for them to be "humanized" a bit more... Like when Gorbag refers to frodo being left for dead as a "typical elf trick", it implies they have a morality that looks down upon leaving a wounded comrade

I love parts where Pippen and Merry recieve some orc luqiud and this work same as lembas or elves drink and make them able to run with same speed and stamina as orcs. Also black ointment on injury and all this stuff. Also little dialog where some orc talk about desertion. This is problem with Tolkien his world is so much black and white. If you are interested in some stories where creature are in main role and are taken more seriously I recommend Goblin trilogy.
As a little girl, I grew up listening to this in the animated movie. Years later, watching The LOTR movies, I waited for this song to start playing when Sam and Frodo were hiding from the orcs. A bit of an unrealistic expectation.
Especially the acting :-) But it cracks me up Bezos put down A BILLION to get his own LOTR spinoff and this comic beats it easily. First, he doesn't deserve the money since he takes away too much of the cake, and second, even with all that $$$$ that's the best what he could get. And he paid for it, made by his own underlings. I think he rolled over at the Hobbit movies, and the bullshit those liberals are gonna do to their show. The games were pretty good, lore breaking but still somewhat respectable to the deified strength of the relics in Middle Earth.

One thing that's neat to see in this adaptation as opposed to Jackson's is that the orcs are actually meant to look pretty pathetic and small rather than being huge, beefy meatmen. With a few exceptions, orcs are much shorter and stouter than Men, and even the Uruk-hai are on average of smaller build than the Men of Gondor, being described as 'almost man-high'.
Neet to see from one perspective perhaps. But for narrative purposes, it's better to make the orcs bigger and thus more menacing. They become more threatening and scary as portrayed in the movies. To help solidify the fealing that the free peoples are fighting a horrifying force, and they're on the back foot, of a war that feels hopeless. You don't get that if the enemy is pathetic and small.
@@jonoxes8662 but the orcs are killed so easily. The only thing that made them a threat in the film was their numbers. I'm reminded of fellowship where tons of orcs attacked and Boromir was the only non-orc to die. It looked like the majority of orcs were taken down by 4 people. In making the orcs look more menacing, giving them greater numbers, and more deaths, they also made the orcs in the film seem more pathetic than the ones in the book.

@@taloob493 I know I'm taking this too seriously, but Sauron was once primarily motivated by an altruistic regard for everyone. He wanted everyone to be as orderly and smart as he knew they could be. Unfortunately, now he is just spite and hatred. Because he could not stop being an arrogant jerk.
Sauron's altruism didn't last long. In the First Age he interrogated someone by showing the guy visions of his dead wife and telling him that she was still alive. Other stuff, too, but Sauron (or Gorthaur at the time) seemed to have aligned with Melkor right around the time the Ainur entered Arda based on what I remember from the Silmarillion.

I honestly think Tolkien would have whole heartedly approved of this song. Music and poetry are sprinkled throughout The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books and it would have gone well along side "Down, Down to Goblin Town" which is a song he created and wrote into 'The Hobbit'.

The fact that hobits can be mistaken for orcs and that this movie, while not selling it perfectly, still manages to convey it fairly well like when Samwise is stamping and singing is really interesting.

Kids today don't realize that back in my day, if us old nerds wanted to watch anything adapted from Tolkien, it was the Rankin & Bass Hobbit TV special, then the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings movie that only went through the end of The Two Towers, then back to TV for the Rankin & Bass Return of the King special. Giving us things like "Frodo of the Nine Fingers", "Where There's a Whip There's a Way", "Far Over the Misty Mountain Cold", and other such classics.

Is this the cartoon's way of humanizing the Orcs since Tolkien stated that one of his regrets was that he didn't give the Orcs much sympathy and that they were treated like slaves that often didn't get a choice rather being evil.
I've always found some of the most interesting parts of the Lord of the Rings is when the orcs get to talk and share some of their thoughts, like when merry and Pippen are overhearing the three different groups of orcs bickering (Urak-hai from Isengard, Black Uruks from mordor and the smaller orcs from the Mines of Moria), when Sam overhears Gorebag and Shagrat, or in gorgoroth when Sam and frodo overhear the large soldier and the tracker.... It makes the orcs more than mindless drones and I think it would have been cool to hear a lot more of that and for them to be "humanized" a bit more... Like when Gorbag refers to frodo being left for dead as a "typical elf trick", it implies they have a morality that looks down upon leaving a wounded comrade
@@post-leftluddite You are right. I love parts where Pippen and Merry recieve some orc luqiud and this work same as lembas or elves drink and make them able to run with same speed and stamina as orcs. Also black ointment on injury and all this stuff.

If you are interested in some stories where creature are in main role and are taken more seriously I recommend Goblin trilogy.

It's honestly amazing how different this version of LOTR is to the live-action one. Also I love how Sam started a race war just to get himself and Frodo away from some Orcs.

One thing that's neat to see in this adaptation as opposed to Jackson's is that the orcs are actually meant to look pretty pathetic and small rather than being huge, beefy meatmen. With a few exceptions, orcs are much shorter and stouter than Men, and even the Uruk-hai are on average of smaller build than the Men of Gondor, being described as 'almost man-high'.
That's the Hollywood treatment...

Neet to see from one perspective perhaps. But for narrative purposes, it's better to make the orcs bigger and thus more menacing. They become more threatening and scary as portrayed in the movies. To help solidify the fealing that the free peoples are fighting a horrifying force, and they're on the back foot, of a war that feels hopeless. You don't get that if the enemy is pathetic and small.
@@jonoxes8662 but the orcs are killed so easily. The only thing that made them a threat in the film was their numbers. I'm reminded of fellowship where tons of orcs attacked and Boromir was the only non-orc to die. It looked like the majority of orcs were taken down by 4 people. In making the orcs look more menacing, giving them greater numbers, and more deaths, they also made the orcs in the film seem more pathetic than the ones in the book.
One of the things I always loved about this movie was how, despite the villains being really ugly, they had such wonderful singing voices.
Whenever my brother and I had to do chores my dad would sing this to us and make a whipping motion. What fond memories.

Sauron's altruism didn't last long. In the First Age he interrogated someone by showing the guy visions of his dead wife and telling him that she was still alive. Other stuff, too, but Sauron (or Gorthaur at the time) seemed to have aligned with Melkor right around the time the Ainur entered Arda based on what I remember from the Silmarillion.
