    Mark, I wish I'd known this one sentence:
    It wasn't just a fad, I didn't outgrow it, and I should have just taken chances that scared the life outta me.
    I'm 40 now, and I may never have a chance to run my own CA shop. Thank you Mark. You're helping me rediscover a passion that I had lost years ago.
    You have my respect buddy.

      AKA50 .... The harder the foam the more it well reflect noise and vibration. The softer the foam the more it will absorb it. You can buy thin compressed Styrofoam and glue it to the inside of the door skin behind the door panel. Not the metal that is immediately behind the door panel,But on the actual inside of the door.

    • @AutoBodyEverything
      @AutoBodyEverything 4 роки тому +1

      Moxlonibus Krypt .... you can also use expanding spray foam and spray it down into crevices and corners of the vehicle that vibrate and or have vents. Just don’t overdo it because it does expand a lot and make sure you do not clog any holes that are purposely meant to be there in order for water to drain out like along the whole bottom of the doors, but there are many other corners and edges you can get especially where metal vibrates against metal.

    I walked away from car audio in the early 2000's because I was tied to shops like Best Buy, Circuit City...and a shop called Big Boy Toys. And with those shops it was more about the bottom line than customer satisfaction and sound quality. But as of late the passion for car audio has started to reignite inside of me. With all that being said...I just wanna say thank you for these tips.

      I started with a 40 watt Sparkomatic amp(called power bootsers then)and a set of house speakers in 1984. I always loved car audio since then. You can get so much more out of smaller speakers now. I love it.

    2:18 When I was trained at a/d/s in Wilmington, Massachusetts, and Rich's Car Tunes and Beaconwood Acoustics, both in Watertown, Massachusetts in the mid to late 1980s, we always had a balanced approach - the subwoofers were 8 inch and sometimes 10 inch, and they were no more or less important than any other speaker. We always looked at the vehicle and the sound system as a whole unit. And by the way Nakamichi Reference Cassettes (pre-recorded albums) were just about as good for testing, and sometimes better, than early CDs.

    The one thing i try to educate people on is that your battery charging system is only as good as the alternator charging it. Caps and batteries are just a bandage if you have nothing to sustain constant current. Sell someone a huge amp and cook it because of low voltage. If you are going to sell someone on a large amp be honest as to what is needed to sustain it. Also educate on CCA vs Copper and wire size and length of run. How much power is lost at a length of wire run. Be honest about it aĺl and you will have a customer for life. Thats my rant. lol. Great videos man. Keep them coming. You rock.

    It's nearly a year I've been doing builds, I just wish I knew about Sound Deadening and the difference between peak and rms from the beginning. I wouldn't have underpowered or overpowered my amp/subs/speakers and I wish I knew about amp settings, because I realised maybe 3 months in that I had ridiculous settings that were damaging my sub and then it died. I thought higher was better, but no, when I researched and got my settings bang on with a replaced sub which I was lucky to get replaced in the first place and then deadening my car, I noticed massive changes and I'm glad channels like this and others like sonic electronix showed me what to do and now I feel pro! 😂👌👌👌

    My biggest lesson is it all starts with the quality of your source of sound. I spent a lot of money "upgrading" to better components only to realize that a quality head unit is of much better value than that stupid expensive set of components. Love the videos Mark. Absolute best, and sane/sage advice on the internet.

    I wish I would have known to use high quality wiring instead of using random wiring. I used to go to a hardware store and using home electrical wiring or go to radio shack and purchase rca cable made for home audio. I was cutting corners and I thought wire is wire. I wish i knew about doing the big three because I though it was a good thing if your lights are dimming. I wish I knew about having clean installs because I used to wiring exposed everywhere. Wires looking like a spaghetti mess just having random wires. One last thing, I though the gains on an amp was a volume control so I would turn the gains up all the way up. Now I know why I was burning up so many amps back in the day.

    • @GlycerinZ
      @GlycerinZ 5 років тому

      I agree with everything you just said.. though I always thought dimming lights were bad, I didn't know there was a solution for it. Quality cables and wires are so critical, upgrading the Big 3 with oxygen free copper instead of copper clad aluminum is a must! I didn't know about that until just last year. I also wasn't familiar with Ohm's law, nor matching amp / sub RMS

    I am just starting out, (putting in my own system) and I am very OCD so I have actually spent between 6 months to a year researching all aspects of the products and installation of said products. I just recently installed the anti vibration tiles, (floor, doors & hatch) and in the next week will be installing the sound barrier materials in the same areas as the anti vibration product. The only aspect of the install that has me "nervous" is the wiring/electrical. My plan is to basically do it in increments so as not to feel overwhelmed by it. I also got the specific service manual dedicated to the wiring so I'm not guessing as I go. I should also mention that I am doing the entire install in the parking lot of my apartment. Not ideal to say the least but I have no other option at this time. So I am at the mercy of the weather as well. Anyway I'm very happy to have come across your channel since I have used your advice in part as a guide on my own installation journey. So thank you for all the work that you put into your videos.

    I really like your channel, i subbed a while ago and have been going through the videos and i am very impressed with your pro style installs. I look back to when i was a teenager getting into car audio and how many mistakes I made. Your tips and how to guides really help me build better than ever, not just audio but over all car customization. I really like the use of the sound suppressant in the doors video and i used those tips to insulate the fire wall and all the connectors under the dash of the car I am building now. Keep the videos coming and keep doing what you do because I appreciate all the work you put into your videos.

    Im an old school installer from the late 80's till late 90's. Back then we did not have all the cool specialty tools etc we had to make our own or make do with what was available. Its pretty cool to see how far car audio has come..:) I enjoy your videos very much they make me want to start installing again lol... OR... Just maybe install a system in my Trailblazer. Nothing crazy keep it simple. Maybe work the kick panels with a 5.25 & 1 1/8 soft dome with a 6.5 in the door with a decent 10... Thanks for the vids!!!

    I agree with sound deadening pads making all the difference. It wasn't until about my fifth build that I started lining the inside of the door skins and quarter panels with those....top to bottom. Passing cars don't make a sound, the comfortable listen volume is actually much lower, and clarity and detail in the music are way, way up. That's how I start every build now. Great channel, great insight!

      So true... Kenwood 6x9s blowing my sub away... Add a sub... One of the kenwoods blew. :(. Replaced with 700watt pioneers... Now i am adding tweeters infront. Then after that... My amp is putting out 60w rms per channel and my pioneer 6x9s can do 120 watt rms... So then i need to upgrade that amp. When that is done.. My 2 subs are about 100watt under there capabities each.. Doing 300 watt rms per sub... But they can do 400 watt per sub, so change that amp. Then... My media player... Is a no name brand Pureaudio. Not so nice... So then upgrade that... Then new tweters that can handle the 100watt per channel of the new amp... JUST KEEPS GOING...

    • @alexisthemexican

      Does it really change anything? Never done it on any install and never really had issues. I havent really messed with more than like 3500 watts though.

    • @DrummerBoii1411
      @DrummerBoii1411 7 років тому

      alexisthemexican Makes things more efficient with stock Alternator and battery. Maybe 10-15% improvements. You'd probably never notice it. But with new Battery/alternator that are like double the power and take huge currents, big 3 is definitely the first thing to do. My car has like an 8 gauge wire but upgrading to 4 gauge or even 0 gauge would make the system run easier. But I'm lazy.

    • @alexisthemexican
      @alexisthemexican 7 років тому

      Avais Hussain I can understand upgrading the grounds/big three with HO alternators, but I don't see how it would benefit stock charging systems. I doubt that is a 10-15% improvement. Maybe for an aging vehicle? Usually just cleaning up the connections is what really helps.

    • @DrummerBoii1411
      @DrummerBoii1411 7 років тому +2

      alexisthemexican That's because OEM stock wiring is design to be "adequate" for average cars.. one of the reasons could be the cars system doesn't need better efficiency for its tech. But, the big 3 does improve a small amount at that 10-15% because efficiency is greater. When you've got more current travelling in the new wire it'll charge faster and discharge slower. Unless the alternator and battery don't develop the power so bigger gauge is useless. But most the time it's between 90-120amp alternator in the car and upgraded wiring helps. You can go on forever and put physics in to it but that's too long.

    Coming from another professional, you have a great channel. I say this because many of the people watching this won't truely know if you really know what you are talking about. So when someone like me watches i will know the differences between basic & advanced. So far i enjoy your show, & you are definitely knowledgeable.
    I did this for many many years myself, even got my M.E.C.P. , but due to circumstances i got into other things now but still do this as a side gig.
    Unfortunately most of the audio places disappeared here in NYC & long Island areas. There are still a few but even they are disappearing. The economy for one, but t oo many people either have a leased car & just leave it stock, or throw a quick sub in. The rest do the "DIY" thing. Regardless i never get cocky & think i know everything, so i always learn new things & techniques, plus always "touching up" sometimes. Plus while Im out in my garage, i enjoy watching your channel. Keep it up bro!

      You can kinda tell when they are when they try to point to this or that, and when you mention what you're actually looking for ("I want just a simple, cost effective setup just for my daily work rig, not a fantastic system for my cruiser"), they start kinda ignoring you're even in the store hardly and go back to looking at stuff on their computer behind the desk or look for other customers to assist instead. I run into that way too often. Just recently had a guy recommend a 36sq ft install kit of dynamat, which was $230, or at a minimum the 20sq ft ($150), when all I needed to do was the back wall and floor behind the seats on a single cab Ranger, which ended up being only about 5sq ft to do thoroughly... As soon as I told him it was really small and probably needed no more than like 8-10 sq ft (ended up getting the 20 cause he gave me a deal, and I'll use the rest in my other truck), and that I wanted to see what he had for 300w RMS 8s & shallow 10's that weren't like $250+, he kinda found a way to end the conversation and went back to his computer.
      I find that WAY too often in almost all the shops I've ever been to.
      They want the people coming in with a wallet full of cash not really caring how much they spend or what they buy as long as it's loud. 😒

    It was almost 12years ago when I made my first audio car system . I remember I did alot of study before I buy speakers and amp and wires and SUB lol..... .the only things I didnot know was , I did not knew component speaker are so better than coaxial speakers. I used very good quality wire and RC .and after 12 years those wire still working well !

    Someone should have explained what a remote wire was to me.. I had that shit on toggle switches when I was 15 LOL.. I spent many years into car audio without knowing anything about Time Alignment and building a proper stage. Using passives bi-amped or just going active to have one speaker per channel for proper TA was never a thought to me. Now I compete in IASCA SQ comps and won my class not long ago.

    Been enjoying car audio for about 2 years now, can't agree with this video more. If I had to add one thing it would be boxes. The first box I bought was tuned to 42 hz and I couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to take the bass in my car to the next level, then I learned from here and from Dave the box guy, how your box is tuned really effects the overall quality of the sound and most definitely the range. I didn't learn this till about a year after I started and it would have saved me a lot of money in the long run..

    I wish i knew how important cable routing and fuses were. I was in HS and my neighbor that got into car audio had gone to college. I routed the amp power wire close to one of the feet of the seats. It moved when putting the carpet back and my lack of appreciation for a fuse was kicked when I grabbed the hot wire to yank it from the battery. The cut cauterized nicely from the heat and I saved the car.

    Wiring diagrams for complex installs are a must! even if it's just on a piece of paper, so you don't get confused when you've got 8 speaker wires in front of you. It's essential if you have distro-blocks, fans, relays, controllers and the like.

    Couldn't agree more. Just wish I would've had access to these kinds of video's for the "how to's" and tips when I started doing all this 20+ years ago. It would've save me a lot of time, headache, and last but not least MONEY. Keep up the great work! Definitely enjoy the video's and just watching the overall progress of your builds. looking forward to seeing how the Jeep turns out. Did you make a final video for "project rebuild" to show the end results of all that work?

    Lol, my first car audio build was in my bedroom, not even in a car, 15 years old, didn't even have a car yet, pioneer cassette deck with a mobile authority 140 watt amp and a garbage sub with a coil x over from radio shack! I'm 42 now and have come a long way. Quality components with sound deadening, quality wiring, big three, actually have proper fuses and circuit breakers, mainly sq, stealth, and of course decent spl.

    I can't agree more on the Sound Deadening effort, no install I have ever done sounds great until the sound dreading is finished. From low listening levels to high I personally will not be satisfied unless this job has been done, I now have found a tremendous benefit to using acoustic deadening on top of vibration treatment in doors or anywhere a mid bass driver will exist to stop the unwanted sound from behind the driver leaking thru the panel or the speaker itself. When you tap on vehicle panels with your knuckle they just make dead thunk compared to lingering twank on untreated metal panels.

    Mark, you hit the nail on the head when it comes to asking on the forums about a typical speaker- using the heading "What speakers should I get?". One thing I would like to mention, and would love to hear your thoughts on, just because I noticed a HUGE improvement when using a 20 band EQ. Not sure what your thoughts are on this, but I cut down alot of the harshness on some rock songs after spending a few hours with my old school Crossfire 20 band EQ. Granted, components sound great right out of the box. To me the person responding to the post doesn't listen to the same exact music the OP does, is misguided info! lol.

    When I first started out in car audio I didn't have the internet. I was limited to B&Q, Sextons and an electrical bits and bobs shop. I was able to get the basics sorted but as to finish, detail and those nice extras that made the whole thing fit together, it was either astronomical expensive or impossible to find.The internet has given me a wealth of materials, fabricators, suppliers that means that what started as a basic design has soon exploded into the build of the century. When I started, I never imagined that would be building my speaker door pods out of Polyethylene and learning a new host of skills such as plastic welding and using stretch-tec leather vinyl.For those just starting out, use the information available on the web. Think of how you would like it to be when you've finished and then learn how to do it - the resources and materials are there if you look. You'll also make a great friend out of your delivery guy.

    • @M4HY3MSH4RD
      @M4HY3MSH4RD 6 років тому

      true power is king, RMS on an amp vs power handling of a speaker, best matched, I generally go for 10-20% above the spec of the speaker, less stress o the amp.

    • @JoeIsCrazyWillman
      @JoeIsCrazyWillman 5 років тому

      For real. Once I learned (very early on) that RMS is the only number that matters, as it is the continuous running actual power being used/produced, then who give a flying F about peak. It literally means nothing. It's just an advertising # for the suckers. "I got a 1000w Sony Xplode system...", no you don't, you have a 250-300w RMS Sony Xplode. 😒

  • @oopsydaisy4637
    @oopsydaisy4637 7 років тому

    Your points are absolutely right. One thing I would recommend and that is spend as much on the front speakers as the sub as you want to have a balanced sound in terms of quality. How bad is it when as you said loads of bass but no treble, that is terrible. Sound treating the car as you recommend, even just the doors makes a surprising difference to £40 pair of front speakers.

    Power output rating/Power handling
    RMS-Voltage-Ohms defining them!
    Most people don't have a clue what these terms are in relationship to each other!
    Proper power and ground size and installation requirements.
    Amp gain settings
    all of these are the things I wished I knew sooner. The last two are probably the biggest reasons most people's systems fail. And the first one is just the manufactures new "PEAK" gimmick ratings.
    All good info to have to make any decision a good solid one
