    #DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

      Yeah the delay'd based netcode is absolute shit. Which is why when my friend wants to spar, my brain goes into auto-pilot mode because i know, neither of us gets the victory because of skill but pure luck, either due to not resisting a stun and rolling bad dice getting the 15 sec stun timer instead of the 0.3 second stun timer, or we just run in a straight line out of attacks then get warped back into them to die.

    • @gutek150
      @gutek150 4 роки тому +3

      @@SuddenFool i completely disagree with what you say. While sometimes yes, the servers do play a role in who wins, if there is a skill gap it's VERY easy to see . I have stopped playing the game as it is more of a chore. Stuns only hit if you are using moves that don't protect you , and they last the same amount of time and not a roll dice. It's still by far more skill based pvp game than any other mmo i have played , but the game just becomes boring once you get the things that are considered "end game "

      My issue with combat after looking past the cool visuals is that the combat system felt same-y on any given class after playing it for a while. You quickly find out whats optimal in terms of combos and you pretty much stick with that in every combat situation. I never got to endgame or pvp but just looking it up it seemed that you still only had one or two viable sequences for any combo after you land a hit.
      Even though BDO has so many progression systems / skills that don't involve combat and you would just need to grind those out too. Anything that seemed like it'd be cool was just locked behind days if not weeks of grinding to just get an initial foothold. The game looks good and everything seems so complex but it just feels empty in the end.

      And don't forget the terrible netcode combined with cheapo servers they use. Even if the "omg this combat system iz best eva" crowd had an argument, it would quickly fall apart when looking at the 60ms and above use case where whole classes like the Tamer lose the ability to connect their entire library of crowd control abilities, making them simple food for players with less than 60ms ping.

I've hit 270ap and don't really need more to compete in high-end pvp, and I sometimes try to get myself to play, but I just can't. If it's not pvp, then what is it? I go run in circles in a room killing hp bags for a couple hours? no thanks, done that the past 2 years lmao. Even with every new expansion, it's just a re-skinning of more mobs to endlessly kill...
    The combat is loads of fun imo, but I'd agree though that most hardcore players overhype how "complex" it is. It's mainly just an HD version of rock-paper-scissors, and sometimes rock loses to scissors if servers desync, which happens a lot...

As of June 16th, I blew all my gear up and have not looked back. Learned my lesson at least.

    While I can understand your points you can play BDO an other way. Me and 3 of my friends only level together, never bought any microtransaction and still have fun because of the combat and graphics. If you are the kind of guy, who needs to be top tier, than yes, BDO is very bad. But if you just want to chill and kill some enemies in style it is very fun. Besides, it is possible to buy costumes with ingame money, which I did.

    Being a casual solo player the negatives either don't reach me or the tradeoff doesn't burn me out.

    While I fully agree with the notion that BDO is extremely toxic in its monetisation and progression, and that you're better off not playing it, your assessment on its action combat is more than a little flawed. Yes, the game has a soft aim assist (which you can turn off if you don't like it) but projectiles ARE projectiles. You CAN react to and block them and counterattack, and there IS a tactical component in finding openings and baiting out defensive cooldowns. Whether or not you LIKE the combat system is definitely up to you but to dumb it down like that is a little unfair. The extreme number of dashes is just a stylistic thing, to push it more towards "anime" like combat than something more slow and deliberate like Mount and Blade. The biggest issue with the combat system that takes away from its skill is actually nothing to do with the combat system at all - it's the way gear dictates everything and the damage formulas/stat gains per RNG enhancement rank.
    That said, the true reason BDO's combat system shines as the "best" in the genre is the motion capture animations and their fluidity and consistency in terms of how they affect your character's coordinates. Good combat animations need realistic footwork, and that means your character needs to move along with them. Games like GW2 let you swing, but your feet are completely detached from that action, allowing you to bunny hop sideways while swinging a sword forwards. This kind of animation is just anatomically wrong and players subconsciously pick up on that. The character model needs to move as a whole with each animation and BDO looks great because it does exactly that.
    Now, if the combat system is the best in its presentation out of any MMOs out there but is "samey" in depth and intricacy - i.e. just as good - does that not elevate it to be the "best" MMORPG combat system so far? It's just too bad that the devs' vision is stacks of Korean Won bills instead of actually making the game have a fun gameplay loop.

    I am pretty unimpressed by BDO overall, but your rationale here is.. odd. "If there's no physically accurate projectile aiming system, absent any form of aim assist, it's not action combat" is a really weird definition, which excludes all fighting games right off the bat, and plenty of others from a host of different genres. It lacks a feature that you personally like, but maybe that comes down more to your preference than anything about the quality of the system or what category it falls into... which is unquestionably, extremely obviously, action. You don't have to exalt your opinion to the status of genre-definitions or game design rules for it to be fair or valid.
    Again, I don't even like the game - for all of its great animations and combos, there's just nothing to use them on because the game has no challenging or interesting content outside of PvP (which isn't challenging or interesting either, given that it's just an endless power grind to stomp people at slightly lower levels). I'm certainly not going to dump hundreds of dollars on it to try and catch up with people who've been grinding full-time for years, so it offers literally nothing to me. I'm actually kind of offended by what a shitty deal this game is, and predisposed to agree with a lot of negative opinions on it, but your reasoning here is a bit absurd.

The life skills get you enough money to buy gear, and there's always events giving out free stuff. My friends joined last week and already has 2 characters at level 58 and nearlyaxed out gear. And he hasn't spent anything. The combat does get repetitive. But somebody who's level 60 doesn't automatically beat someone who's level 58. There's a lot of content to experience but get ready for the grindfest and stupid RNG.
    For 2 months of playing it, I managed to get to the soft cap...I think it was around 53 when you awaken your character and have upgraded abilities and a subweapon.
    What made me stay is the visuals, character customization, housing system and the "trade route" management minigame.
    What made me leave is that you'll pretty much have your wallet as your subweapon once you get to higher levels. Although, you aren't forced to buy stuff but you will eventually decide to do so...until you know how much you would spend in this game.
    The storyline is subpar and I can't understand what was going on. I can't wrap things around my head, no matter how I hard I read the dialogues and understand why, where and what I need to do a certain thing.
    The combat is pretty enjoyable but gets really stale the longer you stay in the game.
    What sealed my decision to leave is the forced PvP mode. I don't really like PvP and plus points for mentioning the unbalanced PvP combat mechanics in your vid. Also not have to make alts is shock to me, you can learn every job in the game, only reason to make alts is for space so basically making "mule" i had no issues with space because i don't craft, this only aspect in game i don't care for but it does offer great things to people that do like crafting.

      A lot of his points in this video about the P2W aspect of the game are no longer true. And haven't ever really been true for the most part besides buying pets.
      -Value packs are not worth buying and have never been worth buying, no player actually spends $20 a month for them because the buffs they give aren't very important. You get free ones for market collection.
      - With the new marketplace that was added into the game a couple weeks ago, buying pearl pets and costumes can be done very easily without spending real money, you can now buy them with in-game money from other players. It's so easy in fact that all of my alt characters have their own costumes now.
      - The only thing I'd honestly recommend a new player buy with real money is extra weight, and even that isn't particularly needed. It's just a quality of life thing. You can get a decent amount of max weight without spending real money.
      So essentially, a lot of the things he says in this video about the game being P2W are just not true anymore.

    • @noiseroulade2894
      @noiseroulade2894 5 років тому +1

      Actually, the arguments for it being P4C & P2W still exist, are legitimate, and about to get a whole lot worse because of the new market. There are tons of outlines drawn up and drafted (old and new) showing this precisely in entirety, pertaining to BDO. Without going into great lengths, the CMP is saturated with items, more so now than it ever was, and with Pearl Shop items, allowing (temporary) rare item availability to anyone. Why? End game. Whats that going to push... Hex+ tier, item prices and progression caps to completely revamped, raised, yet again. Just like the Horse market. Why? End gear.... its easier to get because of the symbiosis between whale and grinder. So, everything must continue to get more difficult to obtain. More P4C & P2W PS items must be created and sold... because once nearly everyone has everything, revenue will decline. Rinse, repeat. Value packs, especially are still relevant, sadly, to not losing coin for in-game penny-pinch-ers, and whales who sell a lot and keep the momentum of supply and demand. Sure one does not need to spend beyond initial purchase to check it out, but to compete and partake in this game while the CMP and economy is becoming a bubble, ready to burst, is impossible. However, there are so many more points about this and it can go into much greater depth. If anyone is interested to know more. Simple, lengthy, web searches (ignoring fluff and toxicity) yield all anyone needs to know.

      Hence why the MOBA, Hero Shooter and Battle Royale game became a thing.

      The sad thing is that if someone really really actually wanted to make a good solid honest social MMO based on meaningful content, player socialization, heaven forbid actual honest to god ROLEPLAYING like back in the day... I mean, it's possible. It's possible even without a multimillion dollar budget, microtransactions, heck even a subscription!
      But nobody does and there is no way any corporate studio, developer or publisher is ever going to do so again. I would only give it a snowballs chance of ever happening if it came out of an independent studio.

From my experience it's quite common in asian MMOs. This is why I play Gw2.
    In gw2, you go into the pvp mode and your gear stats don't affect your pvp attributes. It's a 5v5 mode and it has it's own build selector UI where you choose an amulet which dictates which direction you want your stats to go (do I want more damage and crits or more health and heals etc) then the weapons you have on dictate what skills you can use.
    Then you have server vs server (WvW) pvp which has large zergs and you can play at any level though to be viable, you need to be max level (which can be attained in less than a week).
    Most max level characters in gw2 will find it piss easy to get a set of exotic armour and as long as they aren't playing some obtuse build and know their class, they'll be fine. The Ascended and Legendary gear in the game is only like, a 5% advantage over exotics and a person with exotic gear can easily wreck a player with ascended.
    Sure it's not action combat and it's tab targetting but you can activate an action camera which gives you a reticule and changes your target automatically depending on who you aim at, so it's basically action at this point.
    In BDO you dash everywhere and try to get some combos off but in Gw2, you're thinking about when to dodge (you have limited dodge charges which slowly recharge in battle) and stuns, knocks, binds, stun breaks. Gw2 combat is far more complicated than BDO and if you use a program like ahk you can remap your hotkeys to make it play similarly to BDO with mouse button + keyboard combinations.
    Plus, you buy Gw2 once and play it forever. Sure you have to buy expansions if you want new content but there's no monthly fee and many builds from before expansions compete with expansion builds. It's horizontal progression as well, meaning you don't go up, you unlock. You can log off now and come back a year later, sure balance patches might fuck your build up but you'll still be able to compete and jump right back into the action.
    BDO is simply a shallow game which keeps asking you to borrow money and never returns it. Gw2 is that friend who you might not talk to for a few weeks but will be there in a heartbeat if you need him.

    One major issue I have with BDO (and a lot of other mmorpgs i've tried lately) is that the RP part of the RPG is severely lacking. Players have remedied this in their own way by having an unofficial RP channel and guilds. There's house customization but most of it is locked behind a paywall and most of the furniture is just there for show, giving buffs completely unrelated to the enjoyment of designing a house. A lot of stuff on this open world map is just for show. It's like you're a ghost wandering around through a vast world that forgets you exist right after you're finished interacting with it, or a guest visiting a museum. Yes, you can "interact" with everything but it never reciprocates in ways that are emotionally satisfying. When you cut down a tree, it will look exactly the same as how you left it, only telling you that you collected items from it. While you skin an animal, it just disappears completely until it respawns again. When you go to a tavern, you can't just order a beer and idly drink it for show and then get any sort of "drunk" effect. Your own pets don't act like you exist and simply just follow you. You can "bond" with shopkeepers but you can't even bond with pets. There's not enough incentive to attack friendly NPCs, let alone players, to gain criminal status. It's like they had an idea of what to do with the karma concept and then gave up on it halfway through. All NPCs are trapped in the limbo of being assigned to their spot in an open world game, always walking through you and looping the same animation for eternity, repeating the same voice clips, regardless of how you act around them. A lot of the objectives this game offers you are just in soulless numbers like how much silver you end up gaining, or how high your score gets, but the content itself is extremely repetitive. Most new activities you try out in BDO are a reskin of a different activity. Sailing could've been a very immersive and unique group activity that I would recommend, but they made it so unapproachable, complicated, and honestly kind of boring.
    This complaint doesn't mean I rate BDO lower than other MMORPGs. I've just yet to find an MMO that would give me the same giddy feeling I had as a kid playing stuff like WoW, Maplestory and Runescape. Maybe I'm just too old to enjoy these games anymore.

    I put so many hours just getting to high-40s (spent money on ONE pet I believe). In the process, I leveled tons of crafting/farming and had an absolute blast with the combat system. I was there for the COMBOS. Looking online for combos that work (and figuring out a few myself) was a drug to me. Being able to hit a 15+ button press combo felt like playing a fighting game - it was precision and awesome.
    This was a couple years ago, and as I ramped into later game, I learned that PvP was basically all I had to look forward to, and having not spent hundreds of dollars or thousands of hours...that it would NOT be something I'd enjoy.

As well as bdo giving tons of free bonuses monthly just for logging in every day for a month you would be able to afford a peice of +19 boss gear (+20 is the max). The issues with the combat isn't wrong the movment can get out of hand witch some classes but over all those classes with crazy movment are really very specialized for very specific small scale pvp situations. While the most popular form of pvp is the large scale pvp and the way Node wars and Seiges work having 8-16 guilds of up to 100 players fighting for territory is something no other game has been able to replicate in a way that feels even close to as good.

      LOTRO was the game I've only played a couple times with a friend, and when we did play it was the longest sessions I've ever had.
      We started together at the same time, we were both dwarves if I recall correctly, and we played through the tutorial and tried some menial activities. I shortly after dicovered the town market and bought a bunch of random items, some of which were musical instruments.
      Quickly, we became bored of the combat and pretty much everything else besides the instruments and sold all our equipment to buy more methods of music. We got some horses and for the rest of the night we roleplayed just wandering through the lands, confronting random players and playing tunes for them.
      Before I knew it, we had found ourselves in some hobbity village and I went to go make some coffee while he tried to figure out fishing. I noticed the time and when I got back to my PC to tell him we were both amazed at how quickly the time went by. We had played from about 7pm until 4.30 the next morning and had no idea.
      There's something special that that game accomplished and I can't put my finger on it.

    The main thing that gets me to stick with an mom initially is the world. While BDO is pretty I never felt like any of it was unique. It all sort of blended together. In games like WoW and EQ I could learn the geography and know either where I was or close to where I was with each zone having a distinct look to it, even if it shares a theme with surrounding zones.

    TLDR: Game has improved with several pets in questline, 60 slots through quests and loyalty shop (daily login coins), free gear event (sea anyway), A lot of free XP boost (sea, dk bout other servers) etc. But game balance is shit, and yes u can still sell costume to buy gear.
    Well with so much hours and cash sunk into the game I would say the gear difference in the player base is the reason why I stopped playing bdo actively. I've only reached 261 recently with my class (maehwa) being one of the more irrelevant ones (imo anyway, fite me XD). And while I felt like I achieved something, when I really think about it, it's just thousands of hours for softcap. Though I did meet a lot of new friends (still in contact to this day) for the most part.
    Compared to a year ago, I would say BDO is much easier to get into for several reasons:
    3 free pets through the questline from Velia to Calpheon, then again I'm from SEA not sure if it's the same in other servers. Plus you can get up to roughly 60 inv slots by the time u finish the quests (i think) and that's not counting loyalty shop (login). Weight wise yeah, I hope they give us more options tho Shai has a built in increase in Weight by leveling up. Event logins that give u slots, and etc.
    Costumes tho... Pray to god someone sells one to you on the marketplace.
    Heck I got so salty when they gave out free TRI boss gear for free that is permanent (can't be upgraded but still good for newcomers cuz now they have bridged the gap somewhat). Now for SEA there's a oasis event that allows you to rent for gear and buy some stuff with just 1 silver.
    I'm not saying BDO is flawless but it has certainly improved. The cash shop... Urgh please tone that down I really agree. But lvls, gear. You can't buy those. You can't save time with Value Packs, trust me. You get 530% xp buff from a J scroll (from sea, not sure if NA has it 1 loyalty each, so total of 53 loyalty), and daily 200% xp scroll that can be combined into 600%. That makes 1130% not including the god damn bells that are spammed everywhere. The reason left for me to buy VP is the market tax. But that itself should be removed.
    Bottom line, yes, cash shop does save time, but you can't earn hardwork grind. Yeah, u can argue the ability to sell costumes for silver, and buy gear that way. Then yeah, it's pay to win.
    Class wise... If you ain't picking meta, and unless you really take time to practice your combos... Good luck. As a maehwa player all I have been doing is trying to burst Mages as much as possible before I die to their one shot abilities. I mean I understand it's gear, but how can a Mage by principle tank a Flanker/Assassin class's attacks face on and come out unscathed. Heck Wizards even have a grab! The balance in this game is just horrible, and also one of the reasons I stop playing BDO. (I am salty, yes.)

      i have no prob with p2w, since most people who spend money on costume for silver have high pay job that maybe cost most of their play time, giving option to cut time seems good for me, altho i never sell costume... and yeah u need thanks to them, u could get costume without buying with real money, so in the end, its win win imo

      Totally agree expect for the meta part every class has a strong point and swapping class isn’t that hard as armor and accessories can be used by any class... cash shop is probably what makes people quit early game second it’s when you pass level 50 and get one hit by a guy at softcap just there to ruin new players their experience as pvp is forced reason 3 is probably people at softcap that grind months and months just to upgrade 1 accessory or even worst just fail because rng isn’t on their side I can’t explain how frustrating it is to grind 3 months only to get nothing out of it but only losing billions in silver

    I spent so much time playing BDO, working on my character, pvping, and it was a lot of fun because i was able to deal with their bullshit, and we even got brand new servers for NA... but then they rolled out those "balance" patches, not just to nerf Mystic, but to nerf EVERYTHING. Every week it was a nerf to classes, a nerf to guilds, a nerf to grindspots, a nerf to loot, a nerf to everything they could get their hands on. "Wow this grindspot is great because we can do it as a party together!" - NERF. "Wow i just spent my entire life working on this class and now its finally starting to shine." - NERF. "Wow our guild is able to make lots of silver and reward our players." - NERF. The entire game went downhill with the release of Mystic.

    • @z0h33y
      @z0h33y 5 років тому +2

      I would like to add that before the Great Nerfs, the combat was actually very detailed. Iframes and super armors were for the most part only available when the skill was off-cooldown. And since every skill had a CC attached to it, it was a game of cat and mouse where you would use your ability to avoid being CC'd, but if you spammed it you would not have that protection available for the next attack. Once you did land your CC: the opponent was able to be "combo'd" using a mix of CC's that extend the CC (knockback -> stun -> knockdown -> grab -> downsmash etc). The fun of the game before the great nerfs was learning new combo's, practicing these combos, sharing the combos with others, and learning ways to counter other classes. I remember one day where i spent my time teaching another Valkyrie how to combo and move, and they were so thankful they gifted me a month worth of Premium time.

    TBH for me BDO is a love-hate relationship, in that, while I really enjoy the base game, huge open world, stable engine and responsive gameplay (bear in mind I fully understand I'm not and won't ever be competitive in such a hardcore "no-life" game, rather just in there for fun and the social aspect), I think most of the experience really feels like a second job, what with afk activities, micro-management of workers, inventories in different cities and all...
    It really feels like running a logistics company or something lol.
    Even a casual is expected to leave the PC running 24/7 (fishing, processing, you name it, waking up at odd hours to check on things, much like a mobile game etc...), not to mention the old-school "make or break" casino-style RNG, which while it can be thrilling every now and then, really feels old when so much is at stake.
    To sum it up, while the game at its core is amazing and then some, it's held back by greedy practices and way too much grinding for seemingly little results.

    And ESO has several dlcs which are a must buy, or a constant subscription to actually get gold jewelry, high tier items, best in slot sets, etc.
    Further, World of Warcraft has actual pay to win.
    Pay to reach max level, pay for gold to buy best in slot gear, etc.

    I really enjoyed your video. My experience: I've never played any other action combat MMO and found this game refreshing - never wanting to go back to tab target games again. I do agree that at some point it still is mindless, but even after grinding hundreds of hours I still find it enjoyable enough. That said - I'm someone that can only grind about an hour at a time or an hour a day. So to your point about paying - I've spent $90 since Sept 2017. I have more than 5 pets, 2 PEN items, around 12 characters, and so on - this is because something you may not have experienced. This is company gifts, they have given so much over the years - they give value packs, pets, inventory expansion, etc. Now am I top end pvper? No, but IMO I can compete and contribute. I know people that pay have more advantage than me but I at least feel I can compete without spending the same. What I still enjoy is how much there is to do - tons of content I've never even tried and I like the "endless challenge," even if I'm not a grinder. The area I notice is the worst is the story - or lack there of. I can hardly tell you 2-3 sentences worth to explain the world and what is going on. Sure I skipped dialog, but still I feel there is almost no lore or that I'm not very connected to it. I will stop rambling and say your video was well spoken and I enjoyed your take. A few things I'd like to say,
    As a BDO player who spent playing this for a year (both on NA 9 months and EU 3 months) and now returning after 7 months of inactivity, p2w is subjective. Costumes I can buy as a decently geared player within a week, pets? Just do events and get calendar rewards, yeah sure I missed out early on but I got to 5 pets without having to buy 1, Value pack isn't needed (aside from the 30% which I use a loyalty pack for when I collected lots of loot to sell).
    Alot of things you name to buy you can do ingame, with relative ease now that dark rifts are a thing, 1 week of dark rifts got me 400 mil for 2 hours of boss killing it is ridiculously easy...
    As for endgame being always flagged? Wrong, only if you're in a guild who got declared upon, but fyi this is a PVP mmo, this is not an mmorpg meant for pve/holy trinity/dungeons etc, pvp is the core of this game so people who like to pvp will appreciate constant fights.
    Combat is ... eh, its ok, not supreme, as a tera player I kinda enjoyed tera more but that was cause its consistent, in mass pvp things can get wonkie.
    Overal I'm not defending BDO, the grind is terrible, I got burned out twice ... you feel like you're in a singleplayer game more often due to how limited you are in group activities. If you'd take the game with a calm mindset and not rush or strive to be hardcore, you could easily get enjoyment out of your game for the 10$ you spent. But if you wish to be competitive? Yeah ok make this your only game in your library, which I don't recommend.

    these are from my personal experience and opinion from playing the game for 6 month.
    first point - business model : pets, the value pack, costumes, they can be purchased via the game currency (silvers) on marketplace. In fact, i bought 3 out of the 5 pets i own on the marketplace, and the game give you one pet for free in early game. I have only spend about 15$ on this game for a special pack, and i got the game for free via one of their get the game for free events.
    second point - combat system : i dont do much pvp so cant say much about it BUT you can turn off the aim assist so properly aim if you want to. Most of the skills of all characters are AOE since mobs spawn in packs. Also you will get bonus damage if you hit someone on the back or you knock them down, which require some brain cells to do.
    third point - busy work online? : i have not grind mobs for 2 months now and i just do life skills such as farming, fishing, training horse, sea monster hunting, cooking, trading, alchemy, processing, gathering, and hunting. The lifeskills are more profitable than grinding mobs if done properly, and honestly, this is why i stick to the game.
    To close it off, your points are weak and there are many strong points NOT play bdo.

    I’ve played BDO for about 2 months now, and I’ve noticed that this video is very misinforming because the creator did not unlock majority of the content.
    To start off, the combat system completely changes after lvl 56, which can be reached after a day or two of hardcore grinding. Once you’re lvl 56, you obtain essentially double your move set by equipping an awakening weapon, which opens the door for a hundreds of combinations that surpasses the competition. Aim assist can also be turned off but once you start to learn combos, it’s so hard to hit everything that even with aim assist it’s hard to hit moving targets.
    The pvp is surprisingly nice since it’s completely optional. I have no idea what he meant by not optional, but unless you opt into a war or battlefield, you do not have to fight. When it comes to facing insanely stronger opponents, there are servers for that and servers for newer players.
    The biggest problem for me is the grinding. He was right about the grinding and how money helps, but it’s not pay to play, it’s pay to play better. As a westerner myself, I hated grinding, but there is a bit of upside with guild mates and 10 move combos.
    The creator of this video judged the game too quickly and only judged the game based off the start. He did not have access to half his move set or combo, which is why he felt limited and did not form relations to help his quest. Before comparing it to other games, play the game until you unlock majority of the moves, or else it’s like saying Smash Ultimate only has 10 characters with two attack buttons.

      Ryan V There are pvp servers and battlefields where you can PvP. At level 50 it will give you the option of being able to PvP. It will not force PvP down your throat. I personally hate PvP and just grind and fish. Currently lvl 57 Witch and lvl 57 Berzerker.
      Once you reach past 56, it gets exponentially harder due to bigger exp bars and gear score, but once you hit soft cap (which means you have the 3rd or so best gear which I’m almost there in each gear piece) you will be able to contend even against those who grinded for years. It’s a game of who has more skill at that point. In terms of guild wars, there are people like me who don’t fight and just heal to get rewards or people who stun the enemies.
      Overall I loved the first month of the game, but from then on it gets so hard to get better that I just opted to be a support and fish while I play other games. It’s without a doubt worth it until you enter the world of professionals.

    I think your criticism of the combat system is a microcosm of the whole game. Sure, BDO *looks* like it has great combat, but the players are just loose hitboxes, the abilities are largely very simplistic about aiming, and the dashes are simple network packets inducing invincibility and teleporting, rather than real movement. Even advanced players talk about deliberately dashing around to induce desynchronisation with the server so that you can't be hit. A lot of this sloppiness is covered up with particles and flashes. It's gameplay, but is it quality gameplay? I think not. Mount and Blade, for example, never covers up its combat with flashing lights so you can't tell whether it's working or not. Overall, BDO is all beauty and flashiness covering up a mediocre game. But worse than that, it's a honeytrap.

    • @Izkimar
      @Izkimar 5 років тому

      Agree with this so much. I often see the combat receiving so much praise, but for me it isn't warranted. Sure when i first started playing I was really impressed. But after the fresh and new experience wore off, I no longer found the combat compelling. I love movement, I love high skill cap gameplay, however BDO takes movement to an excessive level. Skill design is so bland, I feel it also does a poor job of promoting group coordination as well. The combination of movement spam and lack of abilities that provide depth in the way of group synergy are some contributing factors to this.

    • @Mekose
      @Mekose 5 років тому +1

      Everyone is looking at this system entirely wrong. It's not a quake-esc arena combat shooter it's an RPG with fighter mechanics. BDO is closest in combat to Street Fighter. You have Iframes, super armor, crowd controls such as stuns, floats, knockdowns etc. It's all about keeping your movements safe through super armors, frontal guards, blocks, and s while catching your opponents out with CC and then use whatever you caught them with as a foundation to start a combo.
      BDO combat is a chess match, it's not a twitch shooter.

    • @Izkimar
      @Izkimar 5 років тому

      @@Mekose again I still feel it is extremely overrated. I think on a group scale the skill ceiling is really low. I have always described BDO as an MMO fighting game. And that wasn't used in a positive manner. It's like they strip all the meaningful RPG elements to facilitate this. Gear is pure vertical ascension. Class progression is pure vertical ascension. There is no true differentiation other than skill. The wizard standing next to you has access to the same skills as you. I feel it's not even an RPG with fighter mechanics. Since character building is extremely extremely limited. Instead it's more of just a MMO Fighter Game.

    • @zomgl2pnoobffs
      @zomgl2pnoobffs 5 років тому

      @@Mekose I'm not sure everybody is looking at it wrong. Nobody said it should be twitchy. Moves and combos and counters are all great to have. In fact, I'd say BDO is trying to be too twichy, and running up against the difference between Street Fighter on a LAN and an MMO over the Internet. People's desire for pace unfortunately clashes with the speed of light somewhat.

      @@Izkimar You can critique BDO combat all you want. I'm not saying it's an excellent system at all, but it should be critiqued within the proper parameters.
      I'm not going to say "wow this forza game has shitty combat" because it's not even the same genre. Saying BDO is bad because it's not like Mount and Blade seems like a ridiculous statement to me. Saying BDO's combat is bad for the reasons you listed is totally viable however.

      @@bonsaw57 He didn't miss the plot, it's just that NS's video here is rambling and unfocused. He struggles to make "it's boring and I don't like how the action feels" into fifteen minutes of content, and part of that is taking a bunch of useless comparisons and misinterpreting what the differences actually mean. Like an action MMO doesn't have the same random, spastic, weightless combat of a heavily modded single player Star Wars game from 15 years ago, which I guess means.. it's.. not "real action"..?
      UA-cam has a way of making randos think that their opinions are the same thing as expertise or insight, and this guy a fantastic example of the phenomenon in action.

And I don't crave highly complex combat, I play video games for enjoyment and some challenge, but I don't need stressful, complicated combat. Call me a filthy casual if you want, but it's a GAME. I've never played BDO, but I've signed up for the PS4 open beta that's coming up and I'll reserve judgement until I've had some in-game time. Yea ive been stuck at softcap for over a year, got sick of NWing, and just decided to focus on my alts and goof around, exploring, questing, optimizing my worker empire. Getting an alt to 60 is so ez (when u have elite jewelry to lend em) and while my "skills" on my main have eroded, im having way more fun than before. Where all i did was grind Miromuks, enhance (and always fail), and NW for all of my active time in game.
      If i stayed "hardcore" id have quit the game ages ago... also im playing less, as i dont have the constant pressure of making "gains" to be more viable in NW. I wished i played more casual earlier.

    Action Games such as God of War and Action MMO's likd Blade and Soul aren't the same genre. "Action" MMO's use near-full action combat because of latency. They have concessions like larger hit boxes, varying aim assist, few or no projectiles, and Iframes because those mechanics make dealing with the reality of lag in an MMO setting far easier. It's a work around. That's pretty much the same reason Tabtarget was the style used in the earliest MMO's as the infrastructure for action gaming on that scale was simply not wide spread enough, and netcode isn't easy to do right to begin with. Action MMO's are also a spectrum with things like TERA being close to full action while TESO and GW2 are much closer to older Tab Target/Autoattack titles. Single-player offline full action games are a much different experience since they don't have to deal with the ping troubles a massive open world mmo deals with. As time moves on these issues will become less and less of an obstacle I'm sure.. but at the same time the hayday of the MMORPG has also more or less run its course at this point.
    I've wanted MMORPG's to go full action for a long time. I'd love a full on pve MMORPG experience with no cash shop that featured the combat of something like Monster Hunter. Unfortunately I think the genre stagnated due to so many trying to emulate WoW's formula and at this point the shear expense of building and maintaining an MMORPG, combined with the long history of failed entries in the genre, put a kabosh on the number we were getting. The few that still come out tend to be like Black Desert; awful microtransaction filled grind fests.
