When I stopped eating all wheat, sugar, and ultra-processed foods about 8 months ago, not only did my weight start dropping, my blood pressure dropped 10 points. Although I'm 74 years old, my blood pressure now regularly reads about 118/68. Lowering insulin works. And I freely salt my steaks!

Blood pressure back to normal range.
@honeybees1, this is what doctors should be telling people, IMO. If you have enough potassium, magnesium and sodium your BP will be in the healthy range.
As I understand, your electrolyte supplements are helping your kidney regulate blood pressure. With sufficient electrolytes, the kidney does not stimulate aldosterone. In the video Dr. Boz explains that aldosterone and insulin are linked. Question: How did you find out the supplements would help?

I ate the foods that were needed and exercised 30-45 minutes daily. Today I m off all meds but take coq10, magnesium, omega 3 s, and a multivitamin daily. My heart meds and BP meds were causing kidney problems, since I stopped the meds, kidney issues went away
I call baloney!!!!!! I have had "high blood pressure" for decades. I can tell you for a fact that when my blood pressure is 120/80 or lower. I'm dizzy and nauseous, I can't even stand up. But, when my blood pressure is higher I am fine. I believe that blood pressure is individualistic. matter of fact after talking to my doctor. She agreed to have my blood pressure at 140/90.
My opinion: my mother-in-law passed away due to complications of multiple falls because Blood Pressure medication reduced her pressure level so far as to cause her to black out. She smacked her head on a dresser, then fell and crushed a vertebrae, then fell out of bed breaking her arm and leg. Too much fear is put on controlling blood pressure, when the predominant failure of our seniors happens from falling.
I probably have a lot of arterial plaque. Check BP often. If my BP drops below 130 I also get dizzy. So one size or in this case one number doesn't fit all. Years ago normal bp was 140/90 the only reason why they dropped the bp numbers is so that Big Pharma could make more money.

I had high BP most of my adult life. I can remember 150/110 at one point. Dr put me on meds and numbers went down. Dr told me the my high BP was hereditary and I could not get it down without meds. In 2007 I joined a weight loss contest which included a Personal Trainer. I worked out for 3, 1 hour sessions every day and changed what, when, and why I eat. Over 6 months I lost 70+ lbs. I gained a few back but I'm still down about 55 from where I once was. I cycle (hard not slow riding) about 100 miles per week and I no longer eat breakfast cereal and I do not drink soda. My latest BP was 124/70. In the winter I tend to back off on the frequency and intensity of my workouts and my BP climbs up. So my point is for me my magic pill is eating healthy, eating less, and working out with high intensity.

As a cardiologist put to me and this particularly applies to many Americans you need to lower your weight. Don’t expect to have low blood pressure if you’re carrying excessive weight.🎉
I agree with this, but not across the board. I've been a plant-based eater for 8 years, I exercise regularly, and have been at my optimal weight for years. My blood pressure will still run high if I reduce or discontinue my blood pressure medicine. There is a lot more to high blood pressure than being overweight.
@@nickgreek6449 So do I. Every study has shown that it's not weight but being sedentary that has the greatest effect on overall health. Focusing on weight is a way to deflect from the fact that Americans are forced to sit a ta desk every day for 8 hours a day. Cardiologists, like many other Doctors, just regurgitate social beliefs instead of actually keeping p with scientific research.
You're not a very good one, obviously. Being sedentary is the issue. studies on weight have shown that even obese people who keep active generally have good health. Being underweight can actually be a more serious issue since physical activity does not benefit them as much as does people in other weight ranges. Older age is often the primary factor in high blood pressure. Though Doctors also need to adjust measuring of BP for older people, since normal BP for a 20 year old is not the same as for someone who's 60. You, like many Drs, have been too heavily influenced by diet industry ads in medical trade magazines. Please look at research instead.

@@danpan001 CoQ 10 is essential for heart health as it's needed to produce the stuff thar fuels your heart which is a different kind of muscle from all the others. It's produced in the same chemical process that produces cholesterol. Stating drugs limit cholesterol by stopping this process, which also greatly reduces COQ 10. In Eyrope when a statin is prescribed COQ10 is also given. Bottom line- stating drugs do more harm than good, in my opinion, interfering in an essential enzyme(?) along with several other bad side effects. Your body burns up a lot of cholesterol when sunlight on your skin is making vitamin D3. Also it uses up a lot coverting Nicotinic Acid in your food to Niacin. Time release Nicotinic Acid is available and was shown to reduce cholesterol naturally the same year the first stating came out. Was in the hospital on a Friday night for a strange pneumonia and BP stayed at 117 over low 60s. They had fits trying to get it higher. I had IV and antibiotics, did not eat most the food, only drank protein drinks my daughter brought me and ate the salads no dressings. BS was taken every 4 hours and stayed at 72 to 85. Sunday night they tried to give me an insulin injection but my daughter stopped them while Ivwas sleeping..The pulmonologist they referred me to for consult was carnivore!!! They told him I was refusing meals. I was immediately discharged because he said, " this place will make you sicker if I dont get you out of here!!"
Even after losing 100 pounds I still needed meds to keep my BP below 140/90. Then one night when eating at a restaurant I decided to have the charcuterie board appetizer for 4 people for my meal. Charcuterie is a culinary artform that uses salt, smoke, and moisture control to preserve meat. That night I had salt, salt, and more salt. I dreaded my morning BP check but to my shock and surprise it was the lowest I'd ever recorded. After repeating the experiment 4 times I threw away my meds. Now, when my BP starts creeping up close to 130/80 I increase my salt intake beyond salting my food to get it back down to 120's/70's.
Yes, I find that very interesting too. I'm not much of a salt person. If food tastes salty to me, I can't eat it. For me what triggers my blood pressure is sugar. If I drink soda pop or eat sugary desserts then next day my blood pressure is high. If I lay off all sugar then in a day or two blood pressure is back to normal.
As an engineer, I don't see high blood pressure as a cause but as a symptom. The body regulates the blood pressure so that the last corner of the body is still sufficiently supplied with blood. If the pressure rises, there is probably a problem in the blood circulatory system - and the problem needs to be looked for and fixed. To exaggerate somewhat: “Do you want to protect your heart or supply your brain with blood?” is the current approach but not fixing the real problem.
Exactly, if you narrow the pipes and keep the same volume of fluid you increase pressure. That's why vasorelaxants like potassium and vasodilators like Nitric Oxide lower blood pressure by widening the pipes. Also having less visceral fat puts less external pressure on the circulatory system. With wide open pipes you should get proper blood flow everywhere with less stress on the pump.❤ Edit: high sodium intake from processed foods and pouring salt on everything is the main cause along with consuming too many calories and putting on visceral fat (internal fat around the organs). High triglycerides (fats) and cholesterol from the diet also harden arterial walls and produce plaque which doesn't allow them to stretch and expand, raising blood pressure.
@@equadvif4475 BINGO! Of course some people have other health or hereditary reasons for their high BP, but if you aren’t carrying 35+ lbs of extra weight, aren’t diabetic or stressed TF out high BP is usually a sign that something else needs to be looked at.

Doctor the guidelines you present here are in line with American standards, could you tell us why the European Community uses more relaxed numbers, and may they have a point worth considering ?
Really good question as BP guidelines have changed a lot over the years. The answer seems to be that they consider 120/80 to be ideal but, Quote: 'The new target range takes into account that BP values recorded under research conditions may be 5-10 mmHg lower than those recorded in routine practice'

Low sodium can cause all sorts of issues, including seizures. So get a blood test before you cut down on salt.

The thing with taking BP readings is it's very unpredictable. Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day. It may spike and dip several times. Even if you have the velcro strap slightly loose it will give an incorrect reading. White coat syndrome can give a higher reading than average. I have found introducing black garlic to my diet has helped stabilise and reduce my BP. But still on those meds.
I had really bad blood pressure problems, both high & low. The highest reading was 300, lowest was 52. Every morning after breakfast my B.P would crash, and then after lunch it would go through the roof. Generally 230+. I was constantly at the E.R & hypotention clinics. They couldn't medicate me because the hypertension meds made my B.P crash. The doctors at the hospital were absolutely boggled by my history & I had every sort of cat scans on my organs to try & figure me out. This went on for about 3 years. I was called 'the walking miracle' because I had no damage to any of my organs & never stroked out. I'm on meds now & have been fine for about 3 years. I'm lucky to live in Australia because all my treatments/ tests, etc, were free on Medicare. Had I been living in the U.S, I'd probably be long dead! 😮

Yes! Other options besides reducing salt intake can help manage hypertension. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, reducing stress, limiting alcohol, and eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are effective. Medications prescribed by a doctor, such as ACE inhibitors or diuretics, can also control high blood pressure.

After the sprint trial results were published, were more people put on BP meds? Similar thing has been happening with LDL and statin meds. They keep updating the guidelines to lower the LDL target more and more and more, resulting in a corresponding increase of statin prescriptions more and more and more. Hmmm....,

I'm a Dr., too. The problem is the "BigPharma" dangling rewards to Doctors in exchange for rewards (paid for cruises or vacations to resorts) for prescribing "medicines" that people don't really need. How many times have you watched a pill commercial on TV where the tag line is, "Ask your Doctor if this (fill in the blank) is right for you."? If the prize for prescribing is a luxury fishing vacation to the Bahamas, then the Doctor's answer is going to be, "Yes, that's just what you need !". Just to be fair, however, not ALL Doctors go along with that and will only prescribe when necessary. It just seems a waste of up to 20 years of education and hard work just to be a puppet to a company whose only concern is higher profits for their shareholders.
Some of the dumbest people I have ever met were doctors. Arrogant and brainwashed beyond belief. Education and socio-economic standing is a completely separate quality from stupidity.

I used IF (4-5 hour eating window) and lowish carbs and gave up my last vice, drinking beer at night, to bring my BP back down to 120/80 avg. I'm 65 and figure that if I want a chance at another 20 functional years (10 to continue traveling) I'd better get a handle on that. This on top of losing 100lbs 3 years ago. Kept it off with IF.
No link to the ONE study cited. Who funded that study would be a critical question. And it’s hard to think basing everything one thinks on a single study is wise.
What if you live healthy and still cannot get pressure down? I'm on medication. There is no data that supports giving meds to someone with mildly elevated blood pressure. The meds benefits often outweighed by side effects. Pressure increases as we age too. People are different. Are you seriously saying someone 5 foot tall will have the same blood pressure as a person 6 foot 5?
Yes. Only 25 percent of those with high BP are salt sensitive. The test to determine that is rather expensive, and insurance does not want to pay for it, SO, standard operating procedure is to restrict salt in all patients. Problem with the approach is that, it can lead to harm in those not salt sensitive as well as causing erratic spikes in BP. That has been known for the last 30 years.
The study u quote was ALL CAUSE MOORTALITY...the standard still used by the govt for pilots...truckers...and most other regulated occupations is still 150/90
My blood pressure is only up when I go to the doc and he keeps wanting to put me on BP meds. I refuse. All docs know how to do is either give you drugs or cut you open. No thanks, only go when I have to -- and that's when I have high blood pressure.
Agree. in my own life, fasting once or twice a week kept my insulin low and therefore my aldosterone was lower. my systolic was in the 110s and diastolic in the 70s.
I was given a 24 hour blood pressure monitor. When I handed in the monitor and a print out was done by the pharmacy, the pharmacy phoned the doctor and said I need to be put on medication immediately as I was a high risk. I had to sign a letter when given the medication because of the side effects.
The heart is a variable pump with no set pressure based on motion. My resting is when I’m sleeping only when I’m sleeping. I believe them slowing my heart rate caused plaque to build up causing stroke! I will never take a blood pressure pill again! Stroke in June took the bp pill shoulders started to hurt again!
I do not believe BP rhetoric. I'm 70 and my BP fluctuates hourly as well as daily. And I am extremely healthy. Plus, I never add salt to anything I eat. I don't eat overly salted or processed foods. And I don't eat junk food. My mother is 101 and has been a vegetarian her whole life but her mom ate everything and anything and lived to 106. Neither of them went to a doctor for regular checkups.
Another "doctor" giving advice on UA-cam hoping for likes and subscriptions. I measured my BP for 3 months many times each day and night. What I found was that it is never ever the same. When I was younger 20-50 my BP was averaging 140/110, and I had loads of energy and perfect health. I could play multiple soccer games in a single day, come home cut my grass, take shower and go dancing till midnight. Then, around the age of 55 I started experiencing "older man urination issues"...BPH, enlarged prostate. My urologist put me on alpha blocker. This medication is used to help BPH, and also help lower the BP. My BP after that dropped to average of 120/100 which may sound good, but I had no energy to do anything. I felt tired, and sleepy. I would fall asleep at the movies or at work. It is embarrassing... I miss my high BP. I am convinced high BP scare was created to sell drugs. I don't care what my BP numbers are. What matters to me is how I feel.
I have chronic kidney disease so I cannot eat animal protein. But since my blood pressure is 159 over 101 will have to eat the sardines to see if they lower my blood pressure. Unless someone knows of a vegetarian substitute for the sardines?
Good point, Dr. Boz. I'm in the process of lowering my blood sugar (it was 71 this morning) before I increase my salt consumption and reduce my BP med (10 mg Lisinopril). Aiming for an HbA1C of 5.0 or lower. Working with the primary care docs is good in theory, but not in this age of 7-minute appointments where the doc barely remembers who you are and needs to look at his laptop to identify you. They have no time for discussion or explanation. Symptom A? Here's this pill. Symptom B? Here's this other pill. See you in 6 months. Dr. Malcolm Kendrick, in his book Doctoring Data, argues that the recommended BP numbers are made up, and that there's little to no benefit from treating BP unless it's quite high (160/100). He presents research that lowering the systolic level to 120 or below raises all-cause mortality among older people because of postural hypotension: When older folks get up, their BP drops and they could fall. The average life expectancy of someone in their 70s who breaks a hip: 9 months. The cause will be given as other causes and classified under all-cause mortality, and the drop in BP will not get any attention.

Did you take yourself off them or your doctor ?
I'm 63 been on two blood pressure meds for years. I no longer take BP meds since I have been taking potassium and Magnesium Citrate supplement. :)
How much do you take of each if I may ask?
@honeybees1, this is what doctors should be telling people, IMO. If you have enough potassium, magnesium and sodium your BP will be in the healthy range.
As I understand, your electrolyte supplements are helping your kidney regulate blood pressure. With sufficient electrolytes, the kidney does not stimulate aldosterone. In the video Dr. Boz explains that aldosterone and insulin are linked.
Question: How did you find out the supplements would help?

I agree with this, but not across the board. I've been a plant-based eater for 8 years, I exercise regularly, and have been at my optimal weight for years. My blood pressure will still run high if I reduce or discontinue my blood pressure medicine. There is a lot more to high blood pressure than being overweight.
There are skinny people with high blood pressure.
I know overweight people that have normal / low BP...

@@danpan001 CoQ 10 is essential for heart health as it's needed to produce the stuff thar fuels your heart which is a different kind of muscle from all the others.
With wide open pipes you should get proper blood flow everywhere with less stress on the pump.❤
Edit: high sodium intake from processed foods and pouring salt on everything is the main cause along with consuming too many calories and putting on visceral fat (internal fat around the organs).

I refuse to take bp medication. I dropped my sodium consumption and my bp went from 175/95 to 140/85. It is now 135/80.
same here. I just don't want to be on meds for the rest of my life. I found my BP went from 145-150/80-90 to a baseline of 120-74 by cutting out ALL processed grain. Bread in particular. But no flour, no processed sugar and low salt. It made a HUGE difference. Then one night had some overly salted chicken skewers. Pressure shot up into the 150s the next morning. Went back down over the next day. Fast forward to this week. Noticed a spike one morning to the 140s. Wondered what the issue was. Traced it back to a carb binge the day before. 2-3 pieces of naan with dinner and a decent-sized bowl of oatmeal the next morning.
The proper questions to follow are:

Just yesterday the light bulb went on for me. I had been doing low carb since January 2024. I started doing electrolytes and my blood pressure was lower than it ever has been to the point I got off my meds. Well last couple of months carbs have been creeping back in. I assumed the electrolyte was what had lowered my numbers but with the added carbs my hot flashes returned the joint pain is back the vertigo showed up this week. Then I saw the light it was the low carb that lowered the bp not the electrolytes. I feel like all the symptoms are 10x worse this time. Back to Keto/Carnivore this time around because I do find that not all veggies are my friend.
It's funny, when I eat meat my blood pressure skyrockets, and I get arthritis, same with my wife.
Add heathy salt to your diet! Celtic or Himalayan Pink Salt. Both don't spike BP and have nutrients.
Years ago many people had pressure at 160/90 now the drs want it to be 120/80. Have been a diabetic for over 20 years, never take meds. I go a out my usiness at not bothering about pressure or sugar. I eat healthy, and go about my business as though i was washing dishes, thats the key. Stop worrying, and your pressure will stay quiet.
I recently saw a diabetic dr who put his stethoscope on my right shoulder and colorbone to test my heart. I left and will never go back. Did not know my heart was on my right side.
But you never addressed the problem of high blood pressure. Just how does one lower his or her blood pressure?
Doctor the guidelines you present here are in line with American standards, could you tell us why the European Community uses more relaxed numbers, and may they have a point worth considering ?
Really good question as BP guidelines have changed a lot over the years.
The answer seems to be that they consider 120/80 to be ideal but, Quote:
'The new target range takes into account that BP values recorded under research conditions may be 5-10 mmHg lower than those recorded in routine practice'
I have had mild high blood pressure for about 30 years and I take medication. Numerous doctors have prattled on about lowering salt intake. None of them have done a blood test before offering this advice. Turns out that I have had low sodium levels for years but still I'm told to cut down on salt.
Low sodium can cause all sorts of issues, including seizures.
So get a blood test before you cut down on salt.
I agree, I’ve had low salt levels in blood results for years too, also high blood pressure, underweight too!
I've been on bp tablets for 17 years. I was always unable to reduce it, as it would be around the 160/110 mark. Then 3 days ago I stopped taking the bp tablets and suddenly my bp, my mood changes dissappeaed, im now in control of my body, my anxiousness, stress has now gone. I've been trying to speak with my doctors, asking is my body rejecting these meds?. No, its a beta blocker, if you stop taking them, then you're one step away from a heart attack, they'd say. The fear, that they put me through is criminal. My bp is now fluctuating around the 120/80 mark. I've never felt better. I'm now in connection and in control with my feelings, my body's experiences, nature, my moods are now happy. I now know that these meds they put me on had removed the true soul connection. I've now reclaimed my spiritual essence of the true self and im finally at peace. ❤

Just to be fair, however, not ALL Doctors go along with that and will only prescribe when necessary. It just seems a waste of up to 20 years of education and hard work just to be a puppet to a company whose only concern is higher profits for their shareholders.
