I have traveled the same route on Amtrak---several times, always in a roomette. It is much less expensive for exactly the same route and Amtrak's food is excellent. I have always been impressed with the helpfulness and cordiality of the staff. For me, sleeping on the train is a highlight. So, there is no way that I can justify the exorbitant price of the Mountaineer. But I did enjoy the vid!!
Yeah the extremely high prices are hard to justify, especially with limited connections in Moab. You really have to want the experience of "first class travel" to take the Rocky Mountaineer. I actually took the Zephyr from Denver west to Emeryville a few days after this journey, and while it wasn't as high class of an experience, it was still fantastic, and at a much better price point.
Spectacular video footage and eye-popping scenery from aboard, and outside of, the Rocky Mountaineer train! Great narration and music, too, and I enjoyed the crew member's hilarious and charming introductions of his colleagues. And your meals looked scrumptious!😋⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🚅

Yes, the elephant in the room is the price but it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As for the video, it was simply amazing and some great camera work.
I would not call this a trip of a lifetime. One can take the California Zephyr all the way from Chicago to just outside San Francisco, and it goes through all of the scenery that the Rocky Mountaineer covers. One can get a roomette on the California Zephyr for under $1,000, or one can get a bedroom (including private bathroom and shower) for about the same price that Rocky Mountaineer charges for coach. In addition to this scenery, the Zephyr also goes through great scenery in the Sierras, especially the area around Donner Pass. In addition, anyone who holds an Amtrak credit card can get very significant discounts on the Zephyr.
@@brucebelcher4995 pretty sure he said with RM *or* Amtrak lol. I would take $145 in coach CHI-EMY any day over the Rocky Mountaineer (and I've done a similar trip successfully on the SWC).

So far, nothing better than Amtrak. The Amtrak food is pretty amazing (with larger portions to boot). And with first class tickets food and daily alcoholic beverages are included. I'm waiting to see the accommodations, not impressed so far. The route is identical so no benefit there for the premium price point. I've ridden Amtrak on this route in a bedroom, and no complaints here. Amtrak attendants are marvelous with wonderful attitudes. By the way Amtrak offers free wifi for all classes of passengers and food is prepared in a full kitchen by chefs beneath the dining car (you can eat in the dining car or in your bedroom suite, your choice.) Admittedly Amtrak restrooms are merely spartan, but clean, and you get a private one in your bedroom that is combined with a private shower. Shower and non private restrooms of course are also provided for non bedroom customers separately. All things considered, I still believe Amtrak offers better accommodations and a better overall experience for the price point. If the Rocky Mountaineer offered a dining car with a full kitchen, I could understand the value, but they don't and eating from your seat like on an airline with European portions is just not justifiable for this price point.
Even though I’m more interested in riding RM’s Canadian routes, I have to say the scenery in summer is just as incredible as when I rode the Zephyr in winter. Definitely want to ride in summer whenever I get the chance.

Nice - great they allow passengers to shoot out the dutch doors. You can do the open platforms on Alaska RR as well. Only the Washington bureaucrats say it’s unsafe and prohibited on Amtrak.
The open viewing areas really make the whole experience. Being able to stick your head outside to enjoy the sights is easily one of the best parts of this journey.
Definitely a bucket list experience. Although I have driven Denver through Glenwood Canyon and beyond, I’d do either the Rocky Mountaineer or at least the Zephyr for the train experience.
I can't recommend this journey enough, even if just on Amtrak. I did both RM and the Zephyr from Denver west within in the span of a week, and both were incredible.

Of all the videos you've posted, this one is by far your most scenic and fabulous production yet. I watched the video fullscreen on my 27" iMac while wearing noise cancelling headphones. I almost felt like I was on the train with you. With the windows so sparkling clean (unlike Amtrak) the views you captured were outstandingly gorgeous. My wife and I were on the California Zephyr in May, 2023 going from Chicago to Emeryville. Unfortunately, rain washed out the tracks west of Denver and we were put on a bus to Grand Junction, missing the most scenic portion of the trip (and the main reason we took the California Zephyr). Will we take that portion on Amtrak or the Rocky Mountaineer? Only time, and budget, will tell. Thank you, once again, for a stunning video.
Thank you so much. I put an unreal amount of effort into producing this, and I'm so glad that effort comes through. Sorry to hear your journey on the CZ was cut short due to weather. If you haven't seen it, I made a video on a very similar experience where the tracks were snowed over between Denver and Grand junction, leading to a shortened journey from Chicago. I work for Amtrak and I can tell you they did right with the GP40. The Chargers may have the horsepower, but they are mostly built for speed and efficiency. I think that using the Geeps kind of keeps a bit of the nostalgia going, although it would be awesome if they used E or F units
I really enjoy your videos and I appreciate you would not be able to afford a trip yourself but a disclaimer at the beginning would make everything clear. I have not seen a video of this portion of the RM as mostly people think of the original train in Canada. There is no doubting the stunning scenery and the bonus it’s all done in daylight which is not the case for The Canadian which shares some of the route. The main complaint I have seen about this train are the unavoidable freight delays which result in very long days after slow transfers to hotels late into the evening and therefore lack of there food options as there is no late meal on the train and the early start the following morning. Though with a quieter train and closer hotel this route does seem to avoid those issues. Also it can get a bit loud due to the amount of alcohol being served. I think most people seem to enjoy the comfort on the train in the highest class, less so in the cheaper seats. I think the best time to travel is the shoulder season when it less busy with large tour groups.
Great vid, very well done. For the price the food portions were very small and you should have mentioned the hot springs by the Colorado Hotel. The springs are huge and great for people watching. Again great vid. Thanx.

Question: If people get off at Mohab and after exploring the national park, then is there a bus that can take people for those who wants to get to Salt Lake City if they need to catch their flight the next day?
American passenger railways should be a huge deal, whether they are luxury, high speed or otherwise, as most American trains are freight-oriented - freeways, trucks and bikers have their place, but I suspect that the original builders of the American railways always had intended passengers to be carried on their lines - I’ve seen the US Presidential Train and other lines around and under Washington DC before, as well as other historic American railways, which must be preserved

@@MrPerfesser The Chief for me wins out, but only just. The Zephyr and the Chief are almost tied and both have views that are absolutely breathtaking, but my love for the Sangre De Cristo mountains gives the chief a very tiny edge.
Fairly embarrassing that this is considered luxury. I hate that America absolutely refuses to build GOOD rail transportation like most other countries. :( our railways here absolutely blow. We SHOULD have high speed bullet trains and scenic high end train systems.
I travelled on Rocky Mountaineer Gold Leaf in 2023 from Vancouver to Banff. I while everything was nice it’s definitely over-hyped and over-priced. I’m guessing on the U.S. route, Amtrak will be a much better deal.
I really wanted to, but it just didn't fit how I wanted it to. That being said, this won't be the last time we travel this section of rail, so I'll be sure to include it in the future.
It seems to me the scenery on the Canadian itinerary is far superior. The price doesn’t scare me, other than the expected single supplement which hammers solo travellers.
I don't think much of the food for the price. Salad for a starter? Rather mean and the breakfasts were ugh, and small portions. As for the puddings, or desserts as you call them, there should also ALWAYS be a choice of cheese for those who don't eat puddings.
@@stevee4636 Locomotives have timecards which dictate how long they can be used in a given period without reinspection. The timecards for the RM branded locomotives expired before the journey began, meaning they had to be re-inspected before they could be used for service again.
For the Zephyr did you see the Moon River-if yes what did you think about it, if not please check it out on the internet- an interesting tradition only for that train. Changing subject on the Rocky Mouintauner train what was your favorite meal. Thanks
Here's an idea: perhaps Amtrak should schedule with the freight companies nighttime layovers. Not only is this a time where freight having priority is nice, it allows for easier sleeping thanks to the train not moving - and none of the scenery is missed either way!
Seats look like a cheap bus. One small armrest between two seats. They should be facing outwards like in Japan to the windows. Really, is this luxurious ? lol
@@SaxonTerror I would be pissed if I PAID for this.. They arent wrong. Luxury should equal lots of room.. They even talk about rotating the seats so you can face each other and they flat out tell you you're not going to have any room if you do...
Mild critique: pricing and that this was a gift trip should have been up front. Also the whole thing was 5-10 minutes too long - waiting for higher priority trains can be a few seconds of narrative.
Sure it could’ve been, but I chose not to have them be first. Some videos don’t even disclose that their travel was provided, so having it at all is a plus in and of itself. As someone who enjoys watching trains, and who has a community who also enjoys such things, I chose to include those shots for longer.
I couldn't help but notice that your train was almost empty in this video. Does the Rocky Mountaineer only have limited business or was this trip a special one for social media content creators? And did the Rocky Mountaineer compensate you in any way for your review (either cash or free travel)? Right now, UA-cam is developing a serious 'truth in advertising' problem where far too many creators are being compensated by the companies whose products are being reviewed - in exchange, of course, for positive reviews.
The travel was complementary thanks to Rocky Mountaineer, as I disclosed towards the end of the video, however the opinions are my own. The travel was provided on the agreement that I would review the journey truthfully and fairly, and I did just that. Even if I had paid for the trip myself, the sentiment would have been the same. The train looked empty as I was filming in an unused railcar for most of the shots, as Rocky Mountaineer asked I didn't film passengers as best I could (hence the blurred faces in many shots with other passengers).
@@LonestarTripsTrains are in need of so much business they will do just about ANYTHING to promote their business - and they should! This is one place where any business is good business to get people out of cars and planes and onto trains!

Any chance of reporting on the VIA Canadian (Toronto->Vancouver)? We're doing that one next summer and really like your review style.
The Canadian is on my bucket list of routes to cover on the channel, but I haven't found the time to get back to Canada and film it.
What is this disc shaped object in the sky at 34:35 😮
Had to check that out as well 🛸👽
You should have played Jupiter in this video.
I’m hoping to check out RMs Canadian routes in the future, as both the scenery and service are a tier above this route.
@@LonestarTrips you’ll need to wait until Jasper is back on its feet again. My sister lives there.
This is an interesting & beautiful train journey!
I don't think much of the food for the price. Salad for a starter? Rather mean and the breakfasts were ugh, and small portions. As for the puddings, or desserts as you call them, there should also ALWAYS be a choice of cheese for those who don't eat puddings.
I see that you had two Union Pacific locomotives. How did they generate the head end power?
They use a generator car at the end of the train.
Why did you say they couldn't use their own Locamotives, I've seen content with and without those Locamotives.
@@stevee4636 Locomotives have timecards which dictate how long they can be used in a given period without reinspection. The timecards for the RM branded locomotives expired before the journey began, meaning they had to be re-inspected before they could be used for service again.
I love kislux that on the butterfly bag it says auguri / tanti auguri which means happy birthday
Why is the train so empty?
I was filming in an unused carriage so as to not disturb other passengers.
I would guess price.
For the Zephyr did you see the Moon River-if yes what did you think about it, if not please check it out on the internet- an interesting tradition only for that train. Changing subject on the Rocky Mouintauner train what was your favorite meal. Thanks
I Imagine it would be quite a cheeky experience.
How much cost the trip??
when i gave a quick look $4-5k per person..
Here's an idea: perhaps Amtrak should schedule with the freight companies nighttime layovers. Not only is this a time where freight having priority is nice, it allows for easier sleeping thanks to the train not moving - and none of the scenery is missed either way!
Looks great but no I wouldn't pay the price.
Seats look like a cheap bus. One small armrest between two seats. They should be facing outwards like in Japan to the windows. Really, is this luxurious ? lol
You're just pissed because you can't afford this
@@SaxonTerror I would be pissed if I PAID for this.. They arent wrong. Luxury should equal lots of room.. They even talk about rotating the seats so you can face each other and they flat out tell you you're not going to have any room if you do...
No sleeping cars, you have to sit for 2 days without sleep???
No lol, passengers are given a complementary night’s stay at a hotel in Glenwood springs.
Seems a bit wasteful to have the bus follow the train like that.
Rocky Mountaineer is NOT a USA luxury train. It is 100% Canadian.
Unless Colorado is in Canada, it is not 100% Canadian.
@@LonestarTrips Just because Rocky Mountaineer runs a trip in the USA doesn’t make it a USA luxury train.
@@LonestarTripsEarly disclosure is better. I'll be more cautious with my time on your channel coming up.
@@LonestarTripsTrains are in need of so much business they will do just about ANYTHING to promote their business - and they should! This is one place where any business is good business to get people out of cars and planes and onto trains!
Amtrak sleeper can be pricy in peak periods as well
@@BobGeogeoI won't. Hello and welcome.
Is THIS what they call a "luxury train" in the US? Really???😅
Love how these people stole the name from Canada's well known Rocky Mountaineer trip across the Canadian Rockies.
It's the same company lol.
Okay, I’ve always scratched my head about the obsession around the kislux book totes and their practicality, but this one is adorable!! Congratulations
The variety of textures in the kislux pack is impressive. From smooth leather to textured suede, there's something for everyone.
