He is an amazing actor, that's why I was pissed that they basically left out shaxx out of the campaign. They should have added another twilight gap moment for him or something like that.
You could also say it's not Taeko, since the voice doesn't sound robotic. I also like the fact we now know who talked in some Grimoire cards, especially the subclass ones. Master chance, does this mean Guardians can control quantum effects? As for the Stormcaller one, Ikora is talking about us as well, like the Sunbreaker dialogue from Shaxx.
12:14 When Zavala says the thing about a Striker turning her entire body into a projectile, I think this was an unintentional (or maybe intentional, who knows?) foreshadowing of the new Striker Super that would be made available with the release of Forsaken, this being the Thundercrash super. It fits the exact description given by Zavala in this meditation of a straight line being the most direct path, throwing themselves at the enemy, and turning their entire body into a weapon. Could be a coincidence, I don't know, but revisiting this may be worth it. Edit: He also talks about the "roar of thunder and the crash of lightning" and 13:05, maybe another facet to this.
I wouldn't call it a coincidence since it seems intentional with the rest of Titan arc super. Seems that Titan's arc supers are all about charging into the enemy in some sort of way.
Well, it’s likely this line came from or was left over from Destiny 1. The fist of havoc in D1 was more reminiscent to the thundercrash, after all: it was single use, you were extremely difficult to kill while in it, it had a large AoE on top of dealing larger damage, and it was even accompanied by crackling thunder and lightning effects
That's the funny thing about Shin though. His story is widely known, but in the Destiny universe it's a lot like a legend in and of itself because believe it or not, Shin Malphur has never once set foot inside of the Last City. He's a true Hunter of the wild...and as there is also no mention of his death, he still could be out there somewhere with the original Last Word.

I absolutely love the bit of Rasputin and the Flayers having a conversation. The Flayers are ordered to hack into, what they think, is a simple computer or a piece of tech and then for the computer they're supposed to hack into actually relate to their plight and their position in the Cabal Empire.... Also shows that Cayde is actually more intelligent and wise than he lets on
Just noticed something strange. Toland says "nothing that has ever lived that will not die", which is something that Emperor Calus says. He also talks about the great void that surrounds everything, which could be the same thing Calus encountered in his exile. Now, I will deve into some of my own research, for me and my friends have been talking about this recently. Our universe is expanding, but what is outside it? Because if it is indeed expanding, it is expanding IN something. My theory is that it is expanding in the Void(not the damage type). This area is where the Sky and the Deep are most present, since Tolans says that the Traveler came out of the void that surrounds all things. This also provides an extremely good explanation to various things, such as the Tive Throne Worlds. Anyway, just a theory.
byf have you been to the tangle on nessus with an exo character and seen the broken vex complex if you're and exo your ghost says the following "looks like this complex colapsed from reacting to your exo body is there a direct connection between the exo and vex i wonder" im paraphrasing of course but just thought that was awesome for us lore lovers and another cool scanable that reacts differently according to your race for the exo, bray, and vex connection
I have scanned both of these as an Exo and thought the same thing. I have also commented asking for a video of this, on his last video. I really hope he makes one about it.
I had a theory that vex milk is a future variety of siva and siva was used to make exos, wild speculation alongside discussing lore while drunk makes for crazy theories

Ok, I'm VERY curious about the Rat King. I want to know who's talking in the lore, because there is no nae attached, and I can't think of anyone that it might be in the lore. The only person I can think of that MIGHT fit this is maybe Suraya Hawthorne, but that's probably pushing it. The Rat King is supposedly a boy that had many "deaths' told throughout numerous stories, all different, but they share a common ending: the boy dies because he left the City walls. The thing that gets to me the most is that while the kids believed the boy never died and they called him the Rat King, the Vanguard says that this boy never really existed. Also, the writer says they believe the story itself. Is the Rate King a real person? If so, who could he possibly be? Who wrote the lore for this weapon, and were they the ones to create the weapon? Why rats of all things? SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN!!! (Unless there is NOTHING about it, then in that case, this weapon's gonna drive me crazy lol) This weapon is an enigma BUT ITS SO GOOD!!!!!!
Theory for you. It could be Taeko-3... Savathun's song required void light, correct? She was consumed into a void crystal... it wouldn't be beyond reason for her to be a void walker warlock!

Mynameisbyf one lore question I have regards the Nessus world quest "O captain". Did the vex harpy download the memories of captain Jacobson? How was the captain able to befriend the harpy? Or did I misunderstand something? I would really like to see the answer for this.

Yes! Do a video talking about a possible alliance with the Fallen. At the end of the Taken strike, Devrim says "this is their home now too". Hawthorne at one point says "let them keep their creepy caves" and "I hadn't seen any Fallen till the Red Legion showed up". We now share our solar system with them and it seems they were keeping to themselves in the EDZ.

The hand cannon Rose belonged to Rezyl Azzir. It is strongly hinted that Rezyl Azzir became Dredgen Yor as a result of taking a shard of bone as a trophy from an unknown Hive knight, who just happened to be the consort of the Hive wizard Xyor the Betrothed, and attaching it to his hand cannon Rose. The Hive bone shard would go on to corrupt Rose, twisting it into Thorn and in doing so corrupting Rezyl Azzir.

Since you brought up the whole alliance with the Fallen, I think a great thing to cover is that. A video giving a refresher on Fallen lore for new guys, discussing the new Fallen House in D2, and discussing that interesting quest chain on Titan, where at the end, you can choose to spare the Fallen Baron you have been chasing. That end fills me with excitement. Great video as always. keep up the fine work.

yes the fact the baroness didn't try to kill Cayde is cool, but in the circumstance, she had no choice, killing Cayde would just kill her, but Cayde did in almost not killing her at the end. This also creates a respect for the fallen in Cayde and begins a friendship between him and Variks.

Hey, Byf. Great video as always! Way back in the D1 days, you made a video discussing the various titan Orders. It appears two of those orders are no more after the Cabal invasion of D2. The Stoneborn and Ouros and her Sunbreakers. While it may not merit a whole video, perhaps it could be discussed as part of other content. They deserve some recognition.
Log video, but well worth it. I enjoyed hearing all the lore when I ran it on all my characters and enjoyed hearing it again and hearing your analysis of all 6 missions' lore.
It's weird that the portals look exactly like the Taken portals, but as we're told, the Shard holds both Light and Darkness. It's interesting to think how this might mean the Taken also have some sort of Light within them.
They Take and distort the Light, then we come in to recieve Light directly from the Shard, _then_ reclaim (un-Take) the Light they Took to strengthen our subclass, even if just a little bit.
You Should do a video on Asher Mir. I have run that strike on Io a few times. The dialog is quite interesting, one part talked about Asher in a fire team with 2 hunters that he hired. He said they had his back, till they didn't. I'm assuming they left him when he lost his arm. He also talks about feeling like a coward because his ghost is still infected by the Vex and he cant bring himself to put it out of it's misery. He just seems like one of the more interesting new characters introduced in D2.
This was cool and all, but the way Destiny 1 gave us our third subclass was miles beyond this. Especially the mission where we became Stormcallers by standing in lightning tornados and then fighting off a ton of vex.
Thanks so much for all the work you do bringing out the lore from the game, I love how you do your videos and help the community understand the 'hidden' lore of Destiny. Keep up the great work! Also, I was reading up on the exotic armor lore on the Destiny database, and the hunter in the Orpheus Rig sounds like the hunter explaining how to draw from the void to me.
Great video as always. As far as lore video ideas I would like to see a video giving some history/lore into the planetory vendors, ie Devrim, Asher, Sloane, perhaps failsafe and the exodus black could be a video unto itself but it would still be cool to learn more about these mysterious figures, as it seems sloane and asher especially are pretty important already within the destiny universe
Fantastic video. This makes me think a lot about what it means to be a Titan, Hunter, or Warlock, and what it takes to wield each element of light. Also, can I just say that Ikora is absolutely the coolest person ever. I wish she was my real life mentor. Oh, I don't know if you're still checking comments on older videos like this, but if you see this, I have a video suggestion. How about something where you go over what it means to be Titans, Warlocks and Hunters. The subclass missions in this game, and the analysis you've provided go pretty into depth on it, but I want to know what you think about it. Like, what makes a Hunter a Hunter? What makes a Warlock a Warlock? What makes a Titan a Titan? Under each subclass, the philosophies of each Guardian tends to differ, but all Hunters are still Hunters. Doesn't matter if you're a Bladedancer or an Arcstrider. It doesn't matter if you're a Sunsinger or a Voidwalker. etc, etc. Regardless of what their individual philosophies are, they're still united under a central class of Guardian, but what does that truly mean? What happens to a Guardian that makes them wield their light in the ways that they do? The best example of this question is the Wei Ning origin story. When you're Risen for the very first time, I highly doubt that you're class is already laid out for you. You have to discover the light for yourself, and how to use it. Plenty of Guardians come to the city, and learn the ways already enforced, but she is an example of someone who had to find her way loooong before she ever made it to her destination. Another example of what I'm asking would be the Sunbreakers. What made them Titans, and what led them to the Solar Forge opposed to the void or arc?
Bungie has referenced other media plenty of times in Destiny before. Star Wars, Dark Souls, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, I can go on. Did you know that the lore tab for Hard Light is actually paraphrasing Steve Jobs' keynote when he first introduced the iPhone to the world? Yeah, they go there a lot.
Can we please just talk about how amazing a story teller Shaxx is, the combination of the music and how much emotion and passion is in his voice as he talks. My absolute favorite parts out of all of the dialouge.

I love Shaxx. He’s one of my favorites to stand around and listen to. I am a little sad that the night stalker one never mentioned Tevis. He deserved at least an honorable mention, right? It is his bow you take in the first night stalker quest.
Here's the thing that I hate about this mission. In the Titan variant, they retconned the battle of twilight gap and made a worse version. In the original version, Shaxx disobeyed Saladin and sent all the forces under his command to hold the breach in the city's defenses. His forces included over 50 battle-frames and a numerous amount of guardians. All of them were killed except a single battle-frame(we'll get to him later) and Shaxx himself. Thankfully, their sacrifice payed off as the fallen retreated, thus ending the battle of twilight gap. Saladin would never forgive Shaxx for what he had done. Shaxx had disobeyed orders, yes, but the root of their enmity is the sacrifice and gamble Shaxx made. For Shaxx had made a tough decision. By his orders(which defied Saladin's orders) he sent many guardians to their deaths and gambled away the military assets needed for the city's survival. If Shaxx had failed, the fallen would have advanced on the city, and all the frames under his command would have been destroyed, which were vital to the city's defense. Saladin could never forgive that. Now for the new version! The new version states that only 4 guardians, including Shaxx, held the breach. No battle-frames were present. All four of these guardians survived. No one died. Can you see why I'm a little pissed? This new version forgoes any sense of the morally grey decision that Shaxx made, gave Shaxx's decision no real sacrifice, made Saladin look like an ass, and fails to explain Arcite's backstory. Ok, first things first. It completely eradicates Shaxx's tough decision. In the original version, Shaxx gambled away all his battle-frames(vital to the city's defense), all the guardians under his command, and disobeyed an order. In this new version he does what? Ask a few buddies to help him defy Saladin? The morally grey aspect of his decision(something that plagues real military commanders) is gone. This also makes Saladin look like a piece of shit. Your telling me that Saladin severs his friendship with Shaxx, his protege, his friend, because he defied an order? Really? The reason he severed their relationship in the original is because of the unnecessary death Shaxx caused. Shaxx sent numerous guardians to their deaths and had an entire battalion of battle-frames destroyed. Saladin wanted to regroup and position their entire army in a secondary defense. Saladin's way may have had the same results, but with far less guardian deaths. THIS is why Saladin shunned Shaxx. Not because he threw a fit about Shaxx not doing what he was told. Finally, this retcon has screwed with another, albeit minor, character. Arcite, the crucible quartermaster, is the only surviving frame under Shaxx that survived the battle of twilight gap. He is the sole survivor, other than Shaxx, in the battle for the breach.(I'm coining it that. Hope it catches on.) But wait! How would this be possible if Shaxx didn't use battle-frames at the battle for the breach? I don't know, you tell me. This has honestly pissed me off. Bungie took one of the more interesting parts of the city's lore and shit on it. But that isn't my main problem with this. The main thing that worries me is that if they retconned this, what's to say that they won't retcon more?
AmazingGaming yeah I didn't know a ton about the story but I remember thinking it sounded wrong. It just feels really meh. Like oh yay another mindless perfect heroic victory that they try to make intense by saying they died a lot. Yeah you died. You're a guardian. Literally everywhere else in a game they talk about how that's a non issue.
They don't really Retcon anything. I think you are mixing up your lore, The battle of Twilight gap has always just been vauge "Shax disobedy orders and held the wall, He was the only survivor." The titan story doesn't mention anyone surviving, even the one named guardian is said to have died permanently. From what we know Ana bray was there with shax and she also died there. There was never mention of frames being there or a large group of guardians. Acrite is important because he was the one frame to keep coming back from Missions, until Dhalia. He has >44 missions and thats about all we know about him. The rest of the Redjacks usually got destroyed in their first few missions. After enough missions Shax decided to retire Arcite and make him the vendor. We don't know what happened to Dhalia but its assumed it was eventually destroyed. Maybe you are mixing up some Six Fronts lore with Twilight Gap? But that was never the official story to my knowledge or what I can find in the grimoire. if you have other sources for that info though I'd be interested in reading it.
There have been several attempts at the city. It's quite possible this is a different battle, and I hope this is the case because I agree that the original story is much better.
@@2011nphelps Probably a bit late for this, but Rezyl Azzir / Dredgen Yor was always a Titan up until he parted ways with his ghost. The version of the story with the legendary duel between Hunters was fabricated by Shin Malphur / Dredgen Vale as a part of his grand plan.
I really liked the lore from the stories. Though arcstrider was something I wasn't familiar with. Hope you do a video on that cause it was missing from this.
He was originally a Titan when he was Rezyl Azzir, but there is some confusion due to a cloak in Destiny 1 called the Cloak of Dredgen Yor, and the fact that Hunters and hand cannons go together quite a bit in Destiny lore. It's possible that Dredgen may have "changed classes" from a Titan to a Hunter when he succumbed to corruption, but it's equally likely that just because it's called the Cloak of Dredgen Yor doesn't mean it belonged to Yor.
John Thomason its confusing because i would assume a loremaster like byf would know rez azzir is a titan and also dredgen yor im just guessing he made an honest mistake and didnt notice it in editing or something.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this discrepancy. Myelin Games did his own lore analysis on the true identity of Dredgen Yor. His findings show that the Anti-Gaurdian's previous identity was in fact Rezyl Azzir, who was a Titian by class.
From what I've heard, I think it was Terramantis who posited that Rezyl was one of the first Guardians and had been around since the time they had just been called the Risen. Don't know if he was an Iron Lord or not, but I think the idea was he, like most of the Risen, didn't fall so neatly into our modern class system. That he was one of those whom the Titans would model themselves after, but wasn't actually one himself, not in the strictest sense. Plus, he turned to darkness and away from the Light and City anyway. I don't think he was exactly concerned with playing by our rules anymore.
Video suggestion... Ouros and the Sunbreakers. As a Titan, my heart dropped when I read the Hallowfire Heart lore tab. I was looking forward to potentially meeting her and the others in the Osiris DLC. Who knows...maybe some Osiris/Vex time trickery can bring them back? "Guardian, Ouros is a legend. If even half the stories are true, she's one of the most powerful Titans alive today!"
Wait I thought the whole thing with Yor was that he was a Titan who was corrupted and changed his name so people would not know who he actually was. Also I thought Rose was merely what he saw the gun as before fully understanding it to be the Thorn that it really was. Great video otherwise I loved the way Shaxx gets really excited by telling the story of Saladin becoming a human missile, I'm just wondering if I'm just misremembering things.
Yor was originally the Titan Reyzl Azzir, but I think Rose only turned into Thorn when Azzir grafted Hive bones onto it, and it was subsequently corrupted, just like he was.
At first he was a Titan the first guardian ever then he got corrupted by a Hive Wizard he then switched around to warlock and hunter. To get the full understanding you should watch Myelin Games videos on him.
Even when I started Destiny 2, I didn’t understand the context of this scene. Thanks to Byf though, looking back at this footage makes much more sense.
i would love to see a video on the potential alliance with the Fallen, and more specifically, the possibility of Prince Alduin of the Reef being their leader, maybe alongside Variks. Since we only see House Judgement banners around the EDZ, and there are several scannables mentioning House Judgement, there has to be more to that story.

Previous speculations have been made that the traveler's "ancient enemy"/the darkness is the architects, but those are just speculations so anything goes

Hey Byf! Love the work and the video. Now, as a fellow Loremaster, i was looking at your Golden Gun section, and you could not figure out the female talking. Well, the female tells a story about a Guardian who is on obsidian cliffs (Those can be found on Venus), where she attacks Vandals (House of Winter). It is to my belief, that the story told is that of the Hunter who went hunting for Draksis! Look up the Hunter Grimoire, and find the one about the female Guardian who is hunting Draksis. Anyways, keep up the amazing lore-telling.
Can you please please please do a video of Osiris? I know you've mentioned him many times in the other lore videos but I'd love to see a video about just him with any tidbits from the grimoire that I might have missed or that hadn't been included in other videos. I think it would be especially interesting now that we have several adventures mentioning him in d2.
I like gunslinger stories the most they are so casual, you can almost picture all ofthem sitting in a bar reminiscing, trying to one up each with their stories of the old.
Just trying to add some help for the gunslinger lore and identifying. The bit where we mention meditation 3, the one shooting the golden gun, has a piece of quote that sounds overlooked to me. The part I really focus on is "Firing from the hip as she goes, each kick of the old revolver a word" Sounds an awful lot like the exotic hand cannon, Last Word. While it does reference the golden gun later in the mediation, that wording can't be a coincidence. I would say to add more evidence to who that story is about, would be related to the lore surrounding the Last Word. (I know the main wielder of the Last Word was a male, I'd be curious is a female hunter ever possessed the hand cannon though). Not sure if that helps up or not, but either way keep up the great work Byf.

It fits the exact description given by Zavala in this meditation of a straight line being the most direct path, throwing themselves at the enemy, and turning their entire body into a weapon. Could be a coincidence, I don't know, but revisiting this may be worth it.

I wouldn't call it a coincidence since it seems intentional with the rest of Titan arc super. Seems that Titan's arc supers are all about charging into the enemy in some sort of way.
Well, it’s likely this line came from or was left over from Destiny 1. The fist of havoc in D1 was more reminiscent to the thundercrash, after all: it was single use, you were extremely difficult to kill while in it, it had a large AoE on top of dealing larger damage, and it was even accompanied by crackling thunder and lightning effects

That's the funny thing about Shin though. His story is widely known, but in the Destiny universe it's a lot like a legend in and of itself because believe it or not, Shin Malphur has never once set foot inside of the Last City. He's a true Hunter of the wild...and as there is also no mention of his death, he still could be out there somewhere with the original Last Word.

Cayde is definitely using wit and humor as a mask. All in all he's got probably the most tragic story in all of Destiny.

Just noticed something strange. Toland says "nothing that has ever lived that will not die", which is something that Emperor Calus says. He also talks about the great void that surrounds everything, which could be the same thing Calus encountered in his exile. Now, I will deve into some of my own research, for me and my friends have been talking about this recently.
Our universe is expanding, but what is outside it? Because if it is indeed expanding, it is expanding IN something. My theory is that it is expanding in the Void(not the damage type). This area is where the Sky and the Deep are most present, since Tolans says that the Traveler came out of the void that surrounds all things. This also provides an extremely good explanation to various things, such as the Tive Throne Worlds. Anyway, just a theory.

Ok, I'm VERY curious about the Rat King. I want to know who's talking in the lore, because there is no nae attached, and I can't think of anyone that it might be in the lore. The only person I can think of that MIGHT fit this is maybe Suraya Hawthorne, but that's probably pushing it.
The Rat King is supposedly a boy that had many "deaths' told throughout numerous stories, all different, but they share a common ending: the boy dies because he left the City walls. The thing that gets to me the most is that while the kids believed the boy never died and they called him the Rat King, the Vanguard says that this boy never really existed. Also, the writer says they believe the story itself.
Is the Rate King a real person? If so, who could he possibly be? Who wrote the lore for this weapon, and were they the ones to create the weapon? Why rats of all things? SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN!!! (Unless there is NOTHING about it, then in that case, this weapon's gonna drive me crazy lol)

Yes! Do a video talking about a possible alliance with the Fallen. At the end of the Taken strike, Devrim says "this is their home now too". Hawthorne at one point says "let them keep their creepy caves" and "I hadn't seen any Fallen till the Red Legion showed up". We now share our solar system with them and it seems they were keeping to themselves in the EDZ.

It is strongly hinted that Rezyl Azzir became Dredgen Yor as a result of taking a shard of bone as a trophy from an unknown Hive knight, who just happened to be the consort of the Hive wizard Xyor the Betrothed, and attaching it to his hand cannon Rose. The Hive bone shard would go on to corrupt Rose, twisting it into Thorn and in doing so corrupting Rezyl Azzir.

A video giving a refresher on Fallen lore for new guys, discussing the new Fallen House in D2, and discussing that interesting quest chain on Titan, where at the end, you can choose to spare the Fallen Baron you have been chasing. yes the fact the baroness didn't try to kill Cayde is cool, but in the circumstance, she had no choice, killing Cayde would just kill her, but Cayde did in almost not killing her at the end. This also creates a respect for the fallen in Cayde and begins a friendship between him and Variks.

It's weird that the portals look exactly like the Taken portals, but as we're told, the Shard holds both Light and Darkness. It's interesting to think how this might mean the Taken also have some sort of Light within them.

They Take and distort the Light, then we come in to recieve Light directly from the Shard, _then_ reclaim (un-Take) the Light they Took to strengthen our subclass, even if just a little bit.

You Should do a video on Asher Mir. I have run that strike on Io a few times. The dialog is quite interesting, one part talked about Asher in a fire team with 2 hunters that he hired. He said they had his back, till they didn't. I'm assuming they left him when he lost his arm. He also talks about feeling like a coward because his ghost is still infected by the Vex and he cant bring himself to put it out of it's misery. He just seems like one of the more interesting new characters introduced in D2.
This was cool and all, but the way Destiny 1 gave us our third subclass was miles beyond this. Especially the mission where we became Stormcallers by standing in lightning tornados and then fighting off a ton of vex.

As far as lore video ideas I would like to see a video giving some history/lore into the planetory vendors, ie Devrim, Asher, Sloane, perhaps failsafe and the exodus black could be a video unto itself but it would still be cool to learn more about these mysterious figures, as it seems sloane and asher especially are pretty important already within the destiny universe

Oh, I don't know if you're still checking comments on older videos like this, but if you see this, I have a video suggestion. How about something where you go over what it means to be Titans, Warlocks and Hunters. The subclass missions in this game, and the analysis you've provided go pretty into depth on it, but I want to know what you think about it. Like, what makes a Hunter a Hunter? What makes a Warlock a Warlock? What makes a Titan a Titan? Under each subclass, the philosophies of each Guardian tends to differ, but all Hunters are still Hunters. Doesn't matter if you're a Bladedancer or an Arcstrider. It doesn't matter if you're a Sunsinger or a Voidwalker. etc, etc. Regardless of what their individual philosophies are, they're still united under a central class of Guardian, but what does that truly mean? What happens to a Guardian that makes them wield their light in the ways that they do? The best example of this question is the Wei Ning origin story. When you're Risen for the very first time, I highly doubt that you're class is already laid out for you. You have to discover the light for yourself, and how to use it. Plenty of Guardians come to the city, and learn the ways already enforced, but she is an example of someone who had to find her way loooong before she ever made it to her destination. Another example of what I'm asking would be the Sunbreakers. What made them Titans, and what led them to the Solar Forge opposed to the void or arc?

Here's the thing that I hate about this mission. In the Titan variant, they retconned the battle of twilight gap and made a worse version.
In the original version, Shaxx disobeyed Saladin and sent all the forces under his command to hold the breach in the city's defenses. His forces included over 50 battle-frames and a numerous amount of guardians. All of them were killed except a single battle-frame(we'll get to him later) and Shaxx himself. Thankfully, their sacrifice payed off as the fallen retreated, thus ending the battle of twilight gap. Saladin would never forgive Shaxx for what he had done. Shaxx had disobeyed orders, yes, but the root of their enmity is the sacrifice and gamble Shaxx made. For Shaxx had made a tough decision. By his orders(which defied Saladin's orders) he sent many guardians to their deaths and gambled away the military assets needed for the city's survival. If Shaxx had failed, the fallen would have advanced on the city, and all the frames under his command would have been destroyed, which were vital to the city's defense. Saladin could never forgive that.
Now for the new version! The new version states that only 4 guardians, including Shaxx, held the breach. No battle-frames were present. All four of these guardians survived. No one died. Can you see why I'm a little pissed? This new version forgoes any sense of the morally grey decision that Shaxx made, gave Shaxx's decision no real sacrifice, made Saladin look like an ass, and fails to explain Arcite's backstory. Ok, first things first. It completely eradicates Shaxx's tough decision. In the original version, Shaxx gambled away all his battle-frames(vital to the city's defense), all the guardians under his command, and disobeyed an order. In this new version he does what? Ask a few buddies to help him defy Saladin? The morally grey aspect of his decision(something that plagues real military commanders) is gone. This also makes Saladin look like a piece of shit. Your telling me that Saladin severs his friendship with Shaxx, his protege, his friend, because he defied an order? Really? The reason he severed their relationship in the original is because of the unnecessary death Shaxx caused. Shaxx sent numerous guardians to their deaths and had an entire battalion of battle-frames destroyed. Saladin wanted to regroup and position their entire army in a secondary defense. Saladin's way may have had the same results, but with far less guardian deaths. THIS is why Saladin shunned Shaxx. Not because he threw a fit about Shaxx not doing what he was told. Finally, this retcon has screwed with another, albeit minor, character. Arcite, the crucible quartermaster, is the only surviving frame under Shaxx that survived the battle of twilight gap. He is the sole survivor, other than Shaxx, in the battle for the breach.(I'm coining it that. Hope it catches on.) But wait! How would this be possible if Shaxx didn't use battle-frames at the battle for the breach? I don't know, you tell me.
This has honestly pissed me off. Bungie took one of the more interesting parts of the city's lore and shit on it. But that isn't my main problem with this. The main thing that worries me is that if they retconned this, what's to say that they won't retcon more?
AmazingGaming yeah I didn't know a ton about the story but I remember thinking it sounded wrong. It just feels really meh. Like oh yay another mindless perfect heroic victory that they try to make intense by saying they died a lot. Yeah you died. You're a guardian. Literally everywhere else in a game they talk about how that's a non issue.
They don't really Retcon anything. I think you are mixing up your lore, The battle of Twilight gap has always just been vauge "Shax disobedy orders and held the wall, He was the only survivor." The titan story doesn't mention anyone surviving, even the one named guardian is said to have died permanently. From what we know Ana bray was there with shax and she also died there. There was never mention of frames being there or a large group of guardians. Acrite is important because he was the one frame to keep coming back from Missions, until Dhalia. He has >44 missions and thats about all we know about him. The rest of the Redjacks usually got destroyed in their first few missions. After enough missions Shax decided to retire Arcite and make him the vendor. We don't know what happened to Dhalia but its assumed it was eventually destroyed.

The version of the story with the legendary duel between Hunters was fabricated by Shin Malphur / Dredgen Vale as a part of his grand plan.

He was originally a Titan when he was Rezyl Azzir, but there is some confusion due to a cloak in Destiny 1 called the Cloak of Dredgen Yor, and the fact that Hunters and hand cannons go together quite a bit in Destiny lore. It's possible that Dredgen may have "changed classes" from a Titan to a Hunter when he succumbed to corruption, but it's equally likely that just because it's called the Cloak of Dredgen Yor doesn't mean it belonged to Yor.
John Thomason its confusing because i would assume a loremaster like byf would know rez azzir is a titan and also dredgen yor im just guessing he made an honest mistake and didnt notice it in editing or something.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this discrepancy. Myelin Games did his own lore analysis on the true identity of Dredgen Yor. His findings show that the Anti-Gaurdian's previous identity was in fact Rezyl Azzir, who was a Titian by class.
Dregden Yor, The corrupted used to be a titan but due to his corruption, he changed to a hunter, but Thorn was corrupted since the start
From what I've heard, I think it was Terramantis who posited that Rezyl was one of the first Guardians and had been around since the time they had just been called the Risen. Don't know if he was an Iron Lord or not, but I think the idea was he, like most of the Risen, didn't fall so neatly into our modern class system. That he was one of those whom the Titans would model themselves after, but wasn't actually one himself, not in the strictest sense.
Plus, he turned to darkness and away from the Light and City anyway. I don't think he was exactly concerned with playing by our rules anymore.

Ouros and the Sunbreakers. As a Titan, my heart dropped when I read the Hallowfire Heart lore tab. I was looking forward to potentially meeting her and the others in the Osiris DLC. Who knows...maybe some Osiris/Vex time trickery can bring them back?

Wait I thought the whole thing with Yor was that he was a Titan who was corrupted and changed his name so people would not know who he actually was. Also I thought Rose was merely what he saw the gun as before fully understanding it to be the Thorn that it really was. Great video otherwise I loved the way Shaxx gets really excited by telling the story of Saladin becoming a human missile, I'm just wondering if I'm just misremembering things.
Yor was originally the Titan Reyzl Azzir, but I think Rose only turned into Thorn when Azzir grafted Hive bones onto it, and it was subsequently corrupted, just like he was.

At first he was a Titan the first guardian ever then he got corrupted by a Hive Wizard he then switched around to warlock and hunter. To get the full understanding you should watch Myelin Games videos on him.
Even when I started Destiny 2, I didn’t understand the context of this scene. Thanks to Byf though, looking back at this footage makes much more sense.

i would love to see a video on the potential alliance with the Fallen, and more specifically, the possibility of Prince Alduin of the Reef being their leader, maybe alongside Variks. Since we only see House Judgement banners around the EDZ, and there are several scannables mentioning House Judgement, there has to be more to that story.
Yas!!! I wanted to hear saint-14’s voice as well! As a titan myself, ever since I heard of him, he’s been my hero of the lore! I’ve been hoping my guardian will grow up big and strong just like him!

Thank you for the info. I was able to pick out some of the quoted from the Grimoire and old voices from D1, but couldn't find some from the Iron Lords in the Stormcaller quest.

Ahh, a great half hour of Lovely Byf, thanks for this. BTW Byf, I have an idea of who the second voice during the Nightstalker Mission. In the Hunter Exotic Orpheus Rig, it mentions a Nightstalker named Quantis Rhee. I feel like that's who it is.

Hey Byf! Love the work and the video. Now, as a fellow Loremaster, i was looking at your Golden Gun section, and you could not figure out the female talking. Well, the female tells a story about a Guardian who is on obsidian cliffs (Those can be found on Venus), where she attacks Vandals (House of Winter). It is to my belief, that the story told is that of the Hunter who went hunting for Draksis! Look up the Hunter Grimoire, and find the one about the female Guardian who is hunting Draksis. Anyways, keep up the amazing lore-telling.
Can you please please please do a video of Osiris? I know you've mentioned him many times in the other lore videos but I'd love to see a video about just him with any tidbits from the grimoire that I might have missed or that hadn't been included in other videos. I think it would be especially interesting now that we have several adventures mentioning him in d2.
Watching these again makes me wish I could experience Destiny 2 for the first time again. That first 24 hours was the best part of the game.

I like gunslinger stories the most they are so casual, you can almost picture all ofthem sitting in a bar reminiscing, trying to one up each with their stories of the old.
Seeing as how the Iron Banner drops/ comes back tomorrow, I think a lore video on this would be great for both new and veteran guardians
Just trying to add some help for the gunslinger lore and identifying. The bit where we mention meditation 3, the one shooting the golden gun, has a piece of quote that sounds overlooked to me. The part I really focus on is
"Firing from the hip as she goes, each kick of the old revolver a word"
Sounds an awful lot like the exotic hand cannon, Last Word. While it does reference the golden gun later in the mediation, that wording can't be a coincidence. I would say to add more evidence to who that story is about, would be related to the lore surrounding the Last Word. (I know the main wielder of the Last Word was a male, I'd be curious is a female hunter ever possessed the hand cannon though).
Not sure if that helps up or not, but either way keep up the great work Byf.
