Hi Dean thanks for a great review. You are good at explaining think of car stereos and different DAPS and that you prefer, I also prefer Fiio and I love my M11plus. our dealer in Sweden still has few in stock but it would cost you more, customs and taxes to send it to Canada. our dealer sells M11 plus for SEK 7,600, in Euro approx. 760 and M17 for 1850 Euro. But I hope you have already bought one. Merry christmas. :-)

Hi Dean, thanks for the helpful information and time you spend for us...
My system is 3 seater panel van ,3 way front Scanspeak and helix sub under passengers seats , Audison Vrx amps , Alpine PxaH800 procesor , Alpine X802du headunit, Bludento aptx Hd receiver, all high end cables, all my phones are LG V series with built-in quad dacs...
I drive every day around 6 hours and make a lot of the phone calls , the Alpine X802du headunit(rca to the procesor) it's ussles very poor sound compared to the 70$ Bludento(optical to the procesor) Bluetooth receiver aptxHd conection...
I stream everything from phone Tidal and UA-cam mostly through Bluetooth aptxHD , it's very important to use the conection wireless ....
After seeing you vid i came with an idea my Lg V50 phone Bluetooth LLDAC conected to M11Plus , M11Plus 3.5mm Y splitter for microphone and RCA to analogue input Alpine Pxa800 procesor. The digital conversion will be done only once by the M11Plus and i will have the ability to make the phone calls without switching the inputs from headunit to the Bluetooth Dac on the procesor.....?
Also DSP.3 will be better than Alpine Pxa800 procesor?
If to use analogue input in the dsp then DSP.3 compared to DSP Ultra will be the same sound quality? ...
Many thanks for your time and support!!!

@@davidkarbit Ok I was looking at the specs on the DSP you have and that was one of the best DSP’s for its time. I see it has two digital inputs but their both toslink. I think going with the new Helix DSP.3s would be slightly better as the specs are just a hair above your Alpine, and would give you the option to use a DAP’s coaxial digital input as well as one Toslink input. Your Aline deck looks like your weakest piece out of your equipment and it still has decent specs but know where near as good as the Fiio M11 plus. It’s too bad that your deck doesn’t have optical Toslink out, that’s why I bought the PAC amp pro for my system as it has the toslink out and like you I have a lot of calls during the day and I don’t sacrifice sound quality as it’s a strait digital connection. So I can listen to the radio, Apple car play etc..on the toslink on input 1 and then switch to my Fiio on input 2 (coaxial digital) to get real serious. Both digital connections but sound slightly different. I’m using Audioquest cables for both.
I’m not a big fan of twenty thousand cables everywhere lol so I like to keep it simple while being able to use all my inputs, which I’ll be adding the Fiio M11 Plus going analog into my DSP Ultra when I get it.
Your issue is that you only have analog on your main deck but your dsp has optical inputs. Your DSP has higher end specs than your deck and especially with optical toslink in.
That being said it’s still decent specs but if I was in your shoes I’d be looking more at the Helix DSP Ultra or the 16 channel Zapco as that would definitely be a jump up, but a big jump in price.
Is your system tuned properly? You have a lot of really nice gear and it should sound good, If not you might have to drive to Peter from PS Sound to get it tuned properly lol.
I’ll be testing the M11 plus soon and will let you know what it’s like going analog into my dsp. Stay tuned for that video once I get it.

@@CarAudioHorizons Hey Dean, Can your Helix Ultra automatically switch between two digital sources?
I'm planning to run a Helix Ultra in my project vehicle as well. Main source would be an Android headunit connected to the DSP via Optical input, used for day to day playback/phonecalls/nav prompts/etc.
Then a Fiio DAP will be connected to the Helix Ultra via Coaxial for better quality playback during critical listening sessions.
I'm hoping to be able to have the Helix switch over to the Optical Headunit source if a phonecall/Nav prompt comes in, then back to the Coaxial DAP when said phonecall is finished.
A bonus feature in hoping for is the Fiio Link app, connected over Wi-Fi. The plan would be to control the hidden away Fiio from the Android radio screen and even steering wheel controls, using the Link App. Apparently bluetooth data communication isn't available on these radios yet, so I wouldn't be able to use the Link app with bluetooth.
      Thanks for any insight!

@@HAMMER_2.2 You can have whatever signal you want as priority so if your head unit is toslink into your helix dsp ultra then you can set that as your priority that way if your listening to your Fiio DAP and a phone call comes in it will detect that and switch over or you can also switch it manually through the director. I’m not sure if the conductor does that though but you can always call Mobile Solutions in Calgary Canada and ask for Larry or Chris and they will know for sure if the Conductor does for sure.

I connect my Fiio BTR15 output via RCA into RCA aux in of the DSP. I installed a RCA switcher before the aux in in order to switch between Head Unit or DAC input. The problem is: After installing the RCA switcher I found audible noise. If I disconnect the usb power of the DAC, the noise is gone. However if I disconnect it, I will need the power source. Also if I don’t use the RCA inout switcher, there is no noise at all even I connect the usb power to DAC, but the problem switching manually the input is so hassle. What should I do? Why this happens?

I always tell people to get a DSP that gives them input options like mine or a Helix DSP.3S or the new Helix DSP Ultra S. With these DSP’s you can have an Aux input, a Optical input, a Coaxial input and a AptX HD input. The FiiO BTR’s are ok but they’re not as good as the DSP’s DAC’s that I mentioned. I would never use a switcher for anything as then you’re just asking for noise. I have found that with most FiiO products they have analog noise issue depending on how you’re using them. The under $1,000 DAP’s are better used via their Coaxial Digital Audio Outputs where as the SMSL units that have linear power supplies built in have no noise whatsoever when using the analog outputs but most of those you need to plugin to your vehicle.

For a mid priced DAP I would probably go with the HiBy R6 Pro II (Gen 2) as it has some decent tech. Normally I would say FiiO M15s but it’s lacking in the tech department compared to the Hiby as the M15s only has Android 10, and a 720p screen. The only decent thing about the M15s is it’s using the ESS9038Pro DAC but everything else seems better on the cheaper Hiby DAP.
I was pretty disappointed with the FiiO M11s as it didn’t sound as good as the old original M11 out of the coaxial digital output.

Dave, I am having some issues playing anything 192KHZ 24bit from my M11 Plus to DSP Ultra Pro over the digital coax. Does not matter where the files are played from eg: SD Card thru FIIO Player, Roon player over wifi LAN, or roon arc over internet WAN the result is the same. There is alway digital noise in the audio no matter what the audio track is. If I switch and listen to the same exact track coverted to 96khz 24bit its dead quite. Have you had any experience with this? If not, do you think you might be able to test it on your system and see what kind of results you get. If you go analog out of the SP2000, the signal is converted back again to digital at the DSP, and the more you convert signals, the more noise will be introduced. Best to have only one conversion, and the way to do that is to go digital out of the player. What do you say? Have you heard the difference, or are you just going off what Matt Schaeffer said?

    • @CarAudioHorizons
      @CarAudioHorizons  Рік тому

Sounds like you have been hanging around the DYI Mobile Site far too long. I talked about this a long time ago before Matt had said anything about it. If you have watched some of my other videos you will hear me talk about it.
What do you think happens when you have a head unit like Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony etc…and go analog out into your DSP…Multiple conversions. This doesn’t matter at all when you’re using the Flagship products like an SP2000, SP3000, FiiO M17, and all the other hi end DAP’s.
What do you think most people that competed used for their source 5-6 years ago…Sony’s RSX-GS9. They all ran it into their DSP’s via analog, not digital…So once again multiple conversion but it sounded better which is the key.
When you are going to the extreme hi end for DAP’s multiple conversions will definitely not matter and you won’t have any noise whatsoever as they are as dead silent as can be.
I will also add, digital is not digital as almost all of the products I have tested sound different which I also talk about a lot in my videos. Go on DYI and most will tell you a $25 product will sound the same as a $5,000 product 😆 Easy to test if you have multiple pieces of equipment or some DAP’s.

Depending on what your budget is, you might want to wait for the FiiO M11s as it should be coming out any day now. I have seen one English review so far and a couple of unboxings.
I currently have the FiiO M17 but it’s $2500 CAD where as the FiiO M11 Plus LTD and ESS are about $1,000 CAD. My guess is the FiiO M11s will be about $600-650 CAD (Canadian Dollars).
Connection wise if you go with any of the M11’s, you would run it coaxial digital which will give you the best connection possible (Better than USB or Bluetooth).

You’re using the Fiio M11 Plus so you would use exactly what you selected on the Fiio M11 plus PO.
Just remember that you first have to test the Fiio M11 Plus on where it distorts at. Then set you gains appropriately on your amps/dsp. Then finally you will have to tune your system.

@@81stefan1 Either the Zapco or the new .3s would be what I would go with if you only need 8 channels. I like the fact that the .3s has both Coaxial digital and toslink, where as the Zapco just has toslink so for that part I give it to the Helix. I have heard the highest end Zapco is supposed to be a little more musical than the Helix or Brax hi end DSP’s especially with the newer DAC’s, but I’m not sure about the two units your looking at as the specs wise the Helix DSP.3s edges it out by a bit. it’s also pretty hard to beat the flexibility of the Helix software. I like the controller of the Zapco a little better as it’s smaller but the Helix Director is also good. You can’t go wrong with either but the Helix is newer and has better specs as well as the better software so as long as you have someone that knows how to use it and tune a system properly I would go with the Helix DSP.3s. On a side note I have had my Helix DSP Ultra for almost a year now and no issues whatsoever, it works just as good now as the day I bought it, same with the director.

It seems like you've got a good grasp on modern technology. I do not. Help me out. I just made an appointment to have a Helix DSP Mini installed, with a HEC BT card and a Conductor. This will feed JL XD amplifiers and Audiofrog drivers, all the way around. The Helix Dsp Mini has RCA inputs, Highlevel inputs and an Optical input. I'll be keeping my OEM headunit, using highlevel inputs for phone, GPS, etc. I was told the HEC BT provided much better audio than my OEM unit and was the way to go. It does seem like a solid solution for daily driving, but I thought I might like something better for critical listening, so I've been researching DAPs... this DSP doesn't have a Coaxial input. How screwed am i?

Also check out my Topping D10S Review as that would be another option if you’re going with a wired connection and then optical out into your Helix DSP. ua-cam.com/video/9R_Yh-kQH5I/v-deo.html
Both of these devices you can use your phone or iPad/Tablet with them.
There’s a few other reviews I have did as well that would work.
As for a DAP they’re great but for most of the mid priced ones you want to connect via coaxial digital, then the flagships you can run analog. Astell & Kern have a few DAP’s that have optical outputs but most of the companies are coaxial digital outputs.
