The Franchi SPAS-12 (Sporting Purpose Automatic Shotgun) is a dual-action police shotgun produced in Italy between 1979 and 2000, and imported into the US until 1994. It can be operated either as a semiautomatic or a manual pump action, as a way to allow rapid semiautomatic fire with buckshot or similar ammunition but also function manually with lower pressure less-lethal types of ammunition (rubber slugs, beanbags, tear gas, etc). The gun was purchased by a decent number of law enforcement agencies, but it is far better known for its use in movies and video games, where its distinctive military styling makes it very popular with designers and prop masters.
Still, there are a couple interesting elements worth looking at on the SPAS-12. For one thing, they were subject to a safety recall for a safety selector which could sometimes cause the gun to fire when being switched from safe to fire. And, of course, there is that hook thing on the stock. What's that for, anyway? I'll show you...
“You cannot see the sights when the stock is folded.”
Call of Duty bamboozled me again.
That's when you're using the hook while it's folded. Else, it'll have a hole that lets you see.
I got drill bits for a reason, we gonna fix that
The stock was unfolded in MW2, back when shotguns were secondaries lol

To add to the ammo types Hollywood blanks aren't powerful enough to cycle the gun in semi auto mode and that's why you almost always see them being used in pump mode in movies.
Tell that to the guy in Predators with the AA12 going full auto. ;)
Except in the movie Virtuosity. Denzel Washington's character actually fires the SPAS-12 on semi auto because the movie's armorer somehow got it working with blanks.

I was under the impression they banned these after the assault on the Los Angelos police department in 1984 where the entire police force was wiped out by an armed gunman armed with a SPAS and an AR18 fully automatic assault rifle.
The perpetrator appeared to be heavily protected by some type of body armor that could stop .223 and 12 guage slugs.
Yes, the famous scene from The Terminator (1984). I wonder how Arnold Schwarzenegger coped with the recoil since he was shooting it without the stock. I know that blank rounds produce less recoil than live ammo does, but the recoil for this shotgun was pretty heavy when using live ammo.

Right, a plasma rifle with energy comparable to a lightbulb. Scary...
As cool as the SPAS 12 is, it does have a few quirks that make it impractical.
1. The safety issue addressed in the video.
2. Loading it is a pain in the ass. Unlike a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870, you can't simply push shells in the tube and be good to go. You have to flip the gun upside down, push the bolt release button to be able to unlock the elevator and load shells. If you don't hold down the button, the elevator stays locked in place and prevents loading.
3. The plastic bits are garbage. The grip has a rubberized insert that has a tendency to crumble leaving a hollow cavity. It feels kind strange when you shoot it. The recoil buffer should also be replaced if you intend to shoot in semi-auto mode.
4. Trying to shoot it using one arm with the hook is rather ineffective. With nothing pushing back against the gun during firing, it will jam in semi-auto mode, even with 00 buck. I have not tried it with slugs. Leaving it in manual defeats the purpose of shooting one handed.
5. It's only chambered in 2 3/4. Personally, I like to have the option for 3" loads.
All that being said, I'm NEVER selling mine!
+tenhundredkills I heard some things that made it a bit of a failure in the police department too.
1. Its expensive because of its complexity it is expensive to make
2. Its heavy because its so complex
3.because it is so complex if it broke down in fight (or in general) you had a hard time bring it back to shooting.
But it still kinda looks badass, which is nice. It really dependents, some say it looks like a Frankenstein between a regular pump action shotgun (feeding area) and a space gun (front). But if you deal with it where weight doesnt matters and it doesnt break, like in video games or movies, its nice. And in those the heros of games or movies reloads it perfectly every time.
+Captain Awesomefish Heros do not reload, they just keep chucking lead ;P
it's an rarity, you should appreciate it by what it represents
+Captain Awesomefish I do have to say that clearing FTEs are a pain in the ass. If you short shuck in pump mode, the magazine will push a new shell to the chamber before the spent one is ejected. Since the elevator won't drop back down until a new round is locked in the chamber, you have to cut out the spent shell with a knife to clear the gun and even be able to engage the action. Otherwise, the gun is completely locked up. However, if you pump it with substantial force, you won't have any problems. It's tons of fun to shoot as long as you keep it maintained and know how to work it's intricacies.
+( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) That's part of the reason I bought mine in the first place. That, and I wanted one since I saw it in The Terminator :)
this is undoubtably one of the coolest looking guns ever made
It functions cooly too
IMO it's pretty ugly, but I like more simple wood furniture firearms, but goddamn is it fucking badass
Pancor. Jackhammer.
@ninjast4r "Sucks" is a bit strong as it's a very well made gun that will last forever. It is however overly heavy for an auto and abysmal as a pump. It's a lot easier and quicker if you're using low power ammunition to just leave it in semi-auto and cycle it with the charging handle.
For competition use any reasonable quality semi-auto will walk all over it. It does look good though.

Try to imagine yourself in the 1990s. You get your first look at this "overpriced Italian shotgun" as you enter a gun store. It hangs on the wall, lightly shining, looking like an ordinary dressed-up pump action shotgun. And you keep your wallet pocketed because you think that maybe it's just an Italian knock off based on your past experiences - just like those Uberti reproductions. But no, not the SPAS-12. You stare at it, and it stares right back.
And that's when the surprise comes. Not from the front, but the foregrip. Because SPAS-12 is a semi-auto/pump-action, you see, it uses a gas cycling, tactical design and it is out in force today. And it hits you with this... A four-figure price tag, like a debt, on your bank account. He doesn't bother to charge you MSRP like, say, a Remington 1100 or a Mossberg 930... no, no. He slashes at your budget here, or here... Or maybe across the belly, hitting your food budget. The point is, you're broke and smiling when you start to shoot it. So, you know, try to show a little respect.

looks like the hook is only used when you have the operator with a riot shield. would seem like the most practical use of the hook any way
+Garrett Owens
Absolutely! Or perhaps if your off-trigger arm is damaged? Perhaps the off-trigger arm is busy?
A friend of mine had one back in the eighties and I have shot hundreds of rounds through it they are loads of fun ! The owners manual showed that the hook was for shooting one handed around corners and not exposing yourself to enemy fire . We always thought that was kind of funny considering that it is called a "sporting" purpose automatic shotgun . Also when the temperature got below around 0 degrees the buffers would crack and the gun wont fire til you replace them, which is a problem in Wisconsin . Also there was no mention of the magazine cutoff switch ,

Had one, loved it,actually hunted small game and deer with it,then canada prohibited them so i sold it before it lost value, regret not keeping it and burying it in a safe place.I loved the idea of the pump auto,i could drop some cheap light loads mixed with heavy loads and when it didn't cycle you just pushed the button and pumped it .The hook was made to hold it around corners and doors.
Tbh, I would have kept it even if it turns into a safe queen. Looking at it is a treat by itself.

I know the reference you're making but if we were being historically accurate, Alex wouldn't have the SPAS-12 available since those events happened 11 years before the SPAS was invented. Might be good for hunting down Perseus, however?
1:07: Till I saw another video explanation on the SPAS-12, I thought the butt hook was used as a stabbing weapon. But, you can actually use it as a handle to carry when the stock is folded, or (stock unfolded) as a support on the back of your tricep, or your forearm, depending on how much of the stock is folded.

The one in Half-life doesn’t have the retractable stock and is “inspired” by spas12. The combat shotgun in L4D2 is the exact make and does 3 shot kill to the head of a witch
Unless you managed to get right up in its face and headshot it without it attacking I was playing hard rain and I had the chrome shotgun not really paying attention but had my light off and was listening since I was in the witch portion of the level do to me walking slow I get right in a witch's face and out of instinct shot one shell tried again but was too far away at first I thought it was a glitch come to find out from the community with any shotgun if you can get in the witch's face without it attacking and aim straight for the head it will die in one shot never even tried to replicate it it was a thing I did unintentionally I was listening for witches in hard rain with my light off and was not paying attention to the environment and well I managed to one shot a witch just because it startled me and I did the only thing that came to mind shoot it in the brain bucket was really shocked it went down in one shell but it's a feat you won't do intentionally or try to recreate you have to be really close like so close you can see it hasn't been brushing after meals and is in dire need of a tic tac
For me, the best way to crown sitting witches without the semi automatic shotguns, is to shoot them from afar.. and when they close the distance and are almost right up on your face, you just time a perfect body shot. I think the only shotgun that would one shot a witch without a headshot is definitely the tactical shotgun.
best way to kill witches was to use a chainsaw

I could use one for squirrels.
I used to own one of these back in the 90's. Lost it in pawn. One of my greatest regrets in life. But Yeah, everything you said about it is spot on. Being cost conscious, I cycled a lot more bird shot through it than buck or other more expensive gunfood, and yes, it often got finicky about cycling that in semi-automatic. The pump action wasn't too harsh, but again, it wasn't as smooth as most others. One interesting thing you didn't mention, that front sight is a beast, and quite durable. If you were ever unfortunate enough to have to swing it at someone, you would not be as unfortunate as whomever got that chunk of pain embedded in them. It's no bayonet, but it would definitely perforate a skull.
