That’s crazy how someone knew that chainsaw piston rings fit a completely different engine. Very good knowledge your viewers have
This machine is worthy of a complete restoration, even if you can do it a little at a time. I'm willing to bet there are a lot of vintage scooter collectors out there that would love to add this to their collection & would be willing to pay good money for it.
my exact thoughts
if he lived in europe he would get alot of money
@pb6839 pretty sure there are collectors over here that would pay good money too
definetely, but more in europe. The scooter culture has made a big comback in the last years since covid@@AnthonyRufo-rc1zm
Need to do the famous “Italian Tune Up” just take it and run it hard til it clears up.
When changing cables on this type of scooter body , always either tape the new cable to the old one , or tape something ( like string) to the old one before you pull through . At this stage , push wire up from below and use it to pull new cables through.
Yep, he still makes a few noob mistakes, but we all do
a welding wire works almost every time. but putting it to the old cable before pulling it is the way to go if you know.
@@Thor555555 rather not waste mig wire
Learned that procedure from switching electrical wire through conduit, tying new wires to the older ones and pulling them through, some sort of lube at the beginning of the new wires always made life easier as well 😉👍
@@M.TTT. it´s not that expensive, and how much do you need, 6 foot? At least you can use it after for something else, to hang up parts for painting etc.
I think it works very good, stiff enought to do not bend that easy and you can get it through by wiggeling it the most time.
bending the tip 180 degree helps to not pierce something and get stuck.
I think the oil fill is the Ducati symbol that has the screws on the side case
For future reference always pull a string through when you pull out the old cable so you will have something to tape to to pull it through
Dude, I watch you all the time. And my 14 year old son now watches. He is so into bikes now and I love it, he love’s wrenching now. Great channel. Keep up all the content.👊🏼
Just perfect for me this : so much in this world is divisive and your vids allow me to focus and enjoy an area I have no clue about! I just enjoy it.Thanks
running it in first gear is a good way to overheat and sieze it just after you brought it back from the dead, btw those panels come off to reveal a tube frame, which should help you to route the cables etc...
Yep. We noticed that the little motor was not warmed up before the test ride. And the gentle hand on the throttle , so as to break in the ring job, was more like "full bore from the git=go." Cat did not even know if the sump was dry. We ain't complaining. We like the entertaining vids from this channel.
@@ashleymontague957don't worry about the sump it doesn't have one 😮 that's for a 4 cycle engine
This is a two-stroke and the gas is mixed with the oil
@@ashleymontague957anything needs to be broken especially this.
Fix that thing.
IT'S SUPPOSED TO SMOKE IT'S A TWO-STROKE.
Keep up the great work man. We love these videos bringing old stuff back to life...
You get the correct oil level by removing the small plate on the clutch cover with the two screws, fill it until it flows out of the bottom of the hole.
Make sure you set the mixture screw so it runs slightly rich or you could get a seizure.
The crank seals can be checked by blocking off the exhaust and inlet and pressurizing the crankcases, see how other scooter buffs do it.
Yep, the little Ducati badge is the filler hole.
I would say the seals deserve to be looked at
And if you're going to split the cases you might as well put bearings and everything in. And to the people talking about it's smoking it's supposed to smoke it's a two-stroke
You need to break that thing in nice and easy
That Honda single you was working on earlier that barely started and someone had rebuilt it supposedly the timing on that is way off and I'm saying ignition timing
It may have had something to do with the burr you had to file down
Need to just split the cases and rebuild it and if he doesn't quit kicking on the kickstarter without engaging the gear before slamming the kickstarter he's going to have Kickstarter trouble
There should be a copper head gasket between the cylinder and the head.
Maybe not.vespas dont
@@neillambourne8448 Pre head gasket!
You mean a metal gasket
@@sennavanwaardenburg460 No, early two strokes had a copper head gasket.
Should just buy some gasket paper. Super easy to make a base gasket. We make them and copper head gaskets all the time. Just anneal the copper. Both really easy to do.
Changing cable outers on Vespas is easy. You take the old inner out, then use a long piece of wire, double the length of an inner cable threaded through the new outer then you pull the old outer out and it is replaced by the new outer as you pull it out. New inner in, job done.
Too late now though... 😢
I was going to say the same thing. Or, tape a wire fish to the opposite end of the cable/sheathing you are pulling, then at least when you pick up a new cable, you have something you can tape it to for pulling the new cable through it's exact position.
You have a smooth touch, seems there isnt anything you cant get running. Theres a few mistakes, but thats how we learn. Ive been working on bikes and three and four wheelers since i was a kid, im 55 now. Worked on them for myself, and professionally. Have also been a ASE master auto tech for the past 30 years. You take on and successfully fix things i'd shy away from.
Wow, I didn't expect you could fix it so quick and ride perfectly.
Well done getting that old beast running and rideable.
Man I was holding my breath. Then it popped off. Awesome job. My hats off to you. These were around a lot when I was a kid. Older brothers had them. Thanks I enjoyed watching from. Sc
Just when I think UA-cam is dead here comes this guy never failing us 💪
Yeah I don"t know what happened but every channel is suffering
@@RCgarageTexaswdym?
Yes! I was about to comment the same thing. I especially wanted to see an update on this, never seen one before.
Love this channel, such a chilled out vibe 👌🏻
Good job getting it to run joe once you get more parts etc and cleaned up it should look pretty good don’t think some people understand or give you time to repair these machines properly as the main thing is see if it runs first before pouring money into a lost cause if anyone else reads my comment please guys give joe a chance after all he pours these videos out on a regular basis which in itself takes a lot of time and always entertains my hats off to him great UA-camr with great content and some awesome machines 👍👌🔧🔧🔧❤️
You are 100% rite .
I absolutely agree with you sir
On the other hand a job rushed, poorly executed and littered with errors is bound to irritate some people.. If it's worth doing, then it's worth doing right and not just for UA-cam views.
@@Gary-Seven-and-Isis-in-1968 if it irritates some people they don’t need to watch simple
@@peteraitken6494 And if there is a comment section, people can and will comment, also simple.👍🏼
One of the funnier videos you've done! You looked almost like a kid at Christmas out trying to ride his new toy! Running to start it, and then smoking up a storm...made me chuckle watching this! Looking forward to another video on this project!
Wow, amazing that you got it going again, starting so easy, great job again.👍
I'm glad the engine started!!! Also that the smoke went away at the end. This scooter is running out of secrets although it still has quite a few left.
Excellent work, as always!
Great dive onto the rarely if never seen machine ,i totally respect your perseverance, stubbornness to achieve your goal, and excellent content always enjoy it...🌞
Always excited when you post amazing content guy never sleeps keep up the good work much respect from London
Caught a glimpse of the new driveway Joe, looking good 👍
Man, I have actually been looking forward to this one.
Good luck on the restore...can't wait too see the results.
Great video and unique machine you have there Joe !! I worked at 2 cycle shops in my time and have extensive parts inventory and recently filed down rings for a 76 Honda xl 350 project !!! Half the fun is chasing parts that will work etc you know the drill 😂 it is raining bad in north Minnesota today as well !!! Love your variety of projects 😍 amazing content
I've got a 77 XL350. It has all kinds of stuff to it. I had the valves redone. Man was that a pain. Just finding some shop to regrind and replace the slightly bent valves was tough. The tank needed sealing. But the one thing I don't have is the end of the exhaust. For a replacement carb I went to the experts, Sudco. They had exactly what I needed and the intake tube. If you are in need of the replacement info ask and I'll forward it to you
Sweet little bike! Good job!
Wow, great job. Sweet hearing it hum along. Crab walking to start, like most Italian motorized things, like the Flintstones
Would have been wild if the socket popped off while you were revving it up 😂 I've never seen someone tried to start a engine like that way
Great Video JOE. You won't have to worry about mosquitos.
Great video I hope you restore this the best you can
Congrats on getting it running.. you may want to use a 3 stone expandable hone for initially trueing up the cyl bore then use a ball hone for cross hatching.
Before tear down some degreaser and power wash will get everything nice and clean.
Good job on finding rings for lt.🙂
It would be so much more appealing to see the work being done on a cleaner machine.
Now since you have it running, I would absolutely tear everything down and refurbish back to as close to new as you can get it. Since it is so rare, that would be totally fitting... Thumbs Up!
Can't wait to seen the next video on this.👍👍
... good job joe, only details left which is always the other half of the battle!!!
That's a cool machine
I have watched this video a couple times - skipped here and there - think this scooter deserves fresh paint etc 👏 very cool 😎 and worth it
Cool bike for sure didn't know that Ducati made such thing
To route cable use a flap of plastic tied to string ,use a shopvac to suck it through then tie cable to string and pull it through I use this method often cheers John in Tasmania
I'm gonna give you a big W just for finding piston rings that would work and getting it running. No matter what that's a W!!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🏼👍🏼
I would sell this if you are not going to restore it properly. And not just piss about with it need restoring properly 👍🇬🇧
Awesome work Joe it's amazing how you get all these bikes running you must have a lot of patience lol keep up the great work ✌💙🙏
Man that thing is cool good job getting it working.😊
I dig your video's and the speed in which you get things to run. It wouldn't bother me one bit if you stretched a few of these builds into a restore video. If you were to completely tore that scooter down. Have the engine vapor blaster, the chassis blasted and repainted, the frame blasted, wow. Why not. There is no way what you do can be sustainable. Buying a new bike every day to have a video every day and not to mention the garage being filled with all of these projects. Do a bike complete restore on that little scooter. I thing that would be awesome. And, besides, you could get other guys in the fix. A vapor blaster and a paint guy, why not. Scott in Southern Oregon
It's not idling because the tiny reed valve between the jug and the intake tube broke off, they were fibreglass on these old Italian scooters. I've had good luck custom making replacements out of metal reed valves from larger motors, they also last forever compared to the old fibreglass ones.
Awesome Joe…. There is nothing you can’t make run!!!🇺🇸⭐️💫 Hoosier Wing
Cool old scoot.
You have to have some pretty cool understand neighbors.
Look forward to future videos on this project
Oi Parabéns pelo o achado moto muito inteira eu não sabia que a ducati fabricou motoneta muito legal ela lembra uma lambreta agora é restaurar e curtir valeu obrigado aqui no Brasil não tem dessas valeu um abraço
My current project is a 1983 husqvarna cr 500 - paint engine suspension all done just need to tidy up some details etc but be race - show ready by spring - been a 2 plus year project 😮
Leak down test for those crank seals
i remember riding a scooter at the scramble course back in the 60s, it had the kicker in the running board.
Reminds me of my first bike, Suzuki Gt50 with a snapped of kick start shaft. I was 11 years old and paid 100 bucks for it, loads of fun, became an expert at bump starting on the run.👍😂
Ducati scooter, very rare in the UK, nice post
Nice 1 on getting it running well 👍 👌 dun 👍
The oil dipstick is in the front of the engine Joe on them.,an some of those are sealed cases to. Try checking underneath of the seat for your oil tank to for it.
I love how smoky it is!!!!
Who needs a bug fogger when you have a 1960’s Ducati… I chuckle because I have a 1963 Vespa 150cc that performs mosquito control up here in Gilbert,Mn. Good job at getting her running.
Should have gotten Victory Outdoor to do a concrete driveway.
With fitting rings, you need to adjust Gap at unworn part of cyl; basically bottom area as if you do it at worn section around top, the gap might be just right but when the ring goes to unworn part and is hot, it might be too tight and touch. Also you need to check side clearance of ring in the grove so its not too tight or loose as these were not likely the rings the Italians used for that piston?
Excellent work on what you did, i just wanted to point out some extra hints so the job is done as good as it could be and not cause install problems once the engine is hot and parts expand..
Italian 2strokes used grease for sealing cyl. Heads in old days
Wow !!! You are a flipping genius! 🆒😎👍!
Hello. I had a Kymco people's. Two stroke 49'cc finishes out @50'cc Rebuilding outside. Coated rings in oil/used cooking oil. Left sitting by it to get something. Came back to find Stitch". Nextdoor dog taking off with them 😭. 😂
This was truly one of the most impressive restorations so far, and there's still much to be done
Lol😂 restoration? Really?
That was a massacre not a restoration. You saw the smoke, those rings didn't last 30 seconds and no oil in the crank case. Killed it.💀
Hated every second if this is so rare whys he destroying it rather than actually restoring it.
@@staind288yeah it seems like the vernacular is changing on that one now also I tried to explain it to them
@@Gary-Seven-and-Isis-in-1968that's a 2-stroke engine it is supposed to smoke because there is oil mixed in the gasoline , as far as the sump as you call it it doesn't have a sump as you're saying it has a transmission some but the engine is separate on a two-stroke
A two-stroke is an atmospheric engine when the Piston goes down it shoots gas and lubricant up to the top of the transfer ports and then does it all over again unless it uses a reed valve and that one does not have a case read it is a piston Port 2-stroke there's different kinds of two strokes also but you're way off on calling that a 4-stroke
Good job mate, sounds great 👍🏾
Cool ideas two stroke with gears
Barnett tool and engineering in Ventura California for cables. Yes, Barnett the motorcycle clutch company. They make custom cables.
Wow seems fast and first gear r can't wait for 2nd and 3rd
Great video, great job getting it going. Maybe engineer a vertical shift rod for the gear selector?
Job well done
Fascinating, educational, and professionally presented video, as always. Thank you sir.
Your knowledge and patience are amazing. I see a replacement for Jade's Landrover?
😂 ❤ you know that is hilarious if he even says something he’s dead meat😂😊😊
Electrian fishing wire tool. May have to drill a hole or 2 now that u pulled it through without tying a string to it but hey u have a welder to plug that hole u drill. Good work man
Hi there.
The engine certainly sounds like it's WORTH restoring.
Just one piece of advice : it is extremely inadvisable to keep running it in first or second gears for too long as this runs the real risk of burning out the clutch - particularly at high revs.
Thanks for reading this.
Def put that in corner as a vintage and save it.great find.the name and age alone will get collectors attention. B safe.peace..
my guy really spun a loose socket at a million rotations a sec and not even had safety glasses on, it was when I knew I had to subscribe.
Don't have to worry about mosquitos. Scooter rebuild coming along nicely.
Great Job, send that subscriber a 2Vinny keychain. Your abilities amaze me. Keep up the hard work
Joe you can buy gasket material paper. In different thicknesses. Make your own gasket 75% of them are easy cuz you can stick them on the surface you want to make and slightly tap with the back end of a screw driver or roll it around the edge. Use a socket to cut the hole. Lay paper on something hard like a vise anvil or hard wood. Take a socket with the appropriate Outder diameter. Line up perfect and hit with a hammer. They make gasket punches just for this reason
Got to route that cable underneath where it goes Joe, it'll get snaged on something.
Unfortunately Joe I think thies are like Vespa. You have to remove floor pan and front fairing in one piece. Then route the cables and reinstall. But glad the Husqvarna rings worked and it sounds good
Awesome 👍
Just remember to bend the angle up on those ends and leave the middle straight. until it starts reaching the metal foot tab part right before that area on them. It's A simple fix for it. That's the kind it takes anyways. I'd just round those squared ends off of your squared pieces. On the top tip part of them is all on each end of them. With your grinder smooth and maybe paint it with top coat black.
I wouldn't run that too long without the cooling tins fitted
Ha ha - the old "gas was off". Don't know how many times I've done that!!!!
Try some Lambretta cables (Series 2 are longer). Lammys have the same gear arrangement. Full sets are readily available with modern no-oil outers etc.
She deserves to be completely restored
you need to restore this thing!
Hi there from Hastings UK 🇬🇧
❤
Hi, Great Job of getting her Running. I’m sure you will get everything else sorted out also. You should clean her all up real good and give her a New Paint Job. Do you have a Sand Blasting Cabinet you could put the Whole Engine in and clean up? Just a thought. Anyway Great Job.👍👍
Nice Job Mate, over here we call this a Scooter not a moped ! I ve had many Vespas and Lambrettas, even had a Durkopf ! Did not know that Ducati also made a production scooter ! Seems there model was swamped by the legendary Scooters of Piaggio and Innocenti ! It seems to have a lot in common with a Lambretta ! Nice Zippy little Scoot for sure ! Did you not see gaskets when you dismatled the cylinder and head ! Could be drawing oil into your cyclinder, not sure that black gunk you used is enough !
eBay had base gasket too. But nobody never listens to me.😮
I'd DIY A gear shifter for out metal and A different shifter arm that has the same splines for that shaft selector just cut it off with A cut off wheel and weld on A bar with two ends that are rounded for the front and back shifting mechanism part. Then weld both pieces together really good with your welder Joe it'll work just fine for it.
Joe, I know you get excited to get these things running and get to ride it. I get that, but next time don't go all gorilla and rip cables out if you are replacing them tie the new one on and wrap it up with electrical tape on all the snag points lube it all up good then pull the old one out and the new cable will be in its place without all the fighting. Just an old-school trick. lol Good video buddy. :)
Can we get more videos of Vinnie chasing the bikes! I was rolling!
Now to find some sweet jumps to send it on
Fantastic....2 strokes rule.
