I agree in getting a soda blaster to free up rust when getting these things loose. You might want to brush some acid on to loosen crusty parts. Use gloves everyone… do it outside if possible and have water ready nearby.
Might be worth it to call Ducati directly. You never know they might know where a piston and rings are sitting on a shelf or the jug or both!! Someone in Italy has to have one!
The twist grip gear change was standard on scooters. No missing cover on the side of the engine, it's fan cooled. That's where the air comes out. Lots of motorcycle manufacturers had a stab at making scooters, but they didn't do well. They all looked clumpy compared to Lambrettas and Vespas. A rarity, though. Well worth a restoration. Go on, Joe, you can do it... 🇬🇧👍
@@kirb943 Definite similarities. A bit more angular. The Italians understood scooters, the British and Americans made things that looked like suitcases with wheels attached. Which only adds to their rarity since nobody bought the bloody things...
That coil is identical to a Lambretta coil. Why? Because Ducati made the ignition system for Lambretta! Make sure the ht lead has plenty of copper inner showing before it's plugged into the coil. That flywheel needs an extractor. It looks like the same size as a Lambretta extractor. They are easily available. Do NOT jam a screwdriver in between the fan blades. They are VERY brittle and will snap off in a heartbeat.
There are alot of 52mm Pistonrings in 1,2mm and 1,5mm for chainsaws like Stihl and Husquarna. maybe one of them fit the shape of the "anti rotation pin". Also i found 4 stroke rings for CB50 and CY50 75ccm cylinders which may could made matching with a dremel. Such Rings are here round about 2€ each so think it´s worth a try to make some of them fit in. The Stihl 046 have the 1,2mm and the 064 or the husquarna 272 have the 1,5mm. one of them have to fit.
I have one of these, they are definitely rare but not worth much. They are a loose copy of a Lambretta Cento so some parts will work (I got a fuel petcock and it was very close but a bit off where the rod attaches). I also got an entire cable kit from the Lambretta and most were close enough to work but some were the wrong length and I just made new ones to fit. The engine was also used in the Ducati 100 Scrambler and Mountaineer.
You could use some random rings for the same or a bit bigger diameter and just file the ends to fit by the pins. Just make sure the thiccness is correct.
You need to call Wiseco, and any other piston maker you can think of, and see if they something that will fit. There are a lot of 100cc 2-strokes that have been made and one of them might match up. Even if they don't have just the rings they might have a piston and ring combo that will work. Good luck.
I could see sporadic sparks around 20:46 which was frustrating as a viewer 😂 I have a theory around the missing ring. The gentleman who sold it knows a thing or two and likely took the top end off and tried to take the rings off, breaking the bottom ring in the process. Realized he can’t get a replacement so he put it back together and put it up for sale.
I felt the same way I literally seen it spark in the plug gap I'm like what do you mean there's no spark lol and yeah I agree with your thoughts on the missing ring
I wouldn't be surprised if there isn' a chainsaw or lawn mower engine that uses rings that are so close that you could file the ring gap to fit the diameter and if you have to, you could slightly widen the ring grooves on the piston with a lathe. By the way, when shifting from one gear to the next, you have to pull the clutch lever in, shift and then let back out. That's a rare little scooter and very worthy of a restoration.
You might be able to call Mahle and give them the piston and cylinder dimensions (piston OD, ring groove dias, groove widths, cylinder bore) and ask if they have rings to fit. Years ago I did that for many oddball engines by calling Hastings Piston Ring, but I think that firm was absorbed by Mahle or another company. They used to have rings for just about any engine. When inquiring, I would not mention what the rings are for, some companies in my area just don't support anything for Italian machines or other long obsolete European machines, no idea why.
Mahle also have a catalogue of plain bearing shells of all dimensions to search through. 90s Yamaha TDM twins could have used old diesel VW triple big ends in undersize steps. Unfortunately discontinued though. No luck..
Not 272 miles. She's been around the clock, many times. Mileage or Km only goes up to 10k. I guess a previous owner tried to fix bad piston rattle, removed one of the rings to match a spare and put the cylinder back together without one ring. The Ducati name makes this amazing.
Not necessarily. Anyone who’s removed one from a bicycle engine or dirt bike has done it the exact same way. Big thing is putting some buffer between the piston and stud threads. I’ve had thread marks (unknown to me) wear out the nikisil lining on a mk2 piaggio cylinder. Being careful will help tremendously, but without removing the engine, it’s really the only way. The piston will his the cylinder studs before the rod try’s spreading the lobes apart. In most all high performance builds, the pin will come out much much easier
In the mid 60’s my dad bought a Ducati trail sport. Had that same engine with same fan shroud on it. It was a 90cc with the 3 speed twist shift on it. Tube frame red color and knobby tires. Looked better than my Suzuki hillbilly 80. Hard starting and started slipping out of gear. Good luck Rx
Maybe check the bore and stroke of other 100cc machines like the yamaha yg1. You might strike it lucky with the correct width and file the gap to make a good fit in the bore. Also check out the 200cc twins from that era (RD200 for instance).
anyone else notice that he aint screwing the spark plug wire in its only resting in there its the end of a screw inside that the wire needs to be twisted on to
That's an incredibly clean 2 stroke engine, maybe not have been run on the correct oil/petrol mixture. May also explain why everything came undone so easy, someone has already been in there and maybe removed the worn rign in the hopes of finding a replacement. Ring wise, a company here in the UK sell 49.8mm rings in pairs, Part Number VE10116-4 They're for the Vespa 100 etc
I really wish you wouldn't just do the absolute minimum to get it to run when it's something rare and really worth looking after. Much rather you checked everything and went through it first. This moped needs totally high quality restoration in my eyes. Every detail done as well as can be.
Thank you so much for this video. Have a brio 100 and just got it running. In mine compression was good but the issue was that the ignition points contact was bent and would not cut so that it had to spark at the plug. Your videos on the brio were very very useful. Thank you.

2V, back in the day we used to remove the bottom ring to make 2 strokes rev higher! It worked as long as we changed rings frequently. It was a go-cart cheat. Some high performance pistons came with a single ring from factory.
Did this myself with a Lambretta also polished and enlarged the ports & took out crankshaft and filled the balance hole with cork which was glued in with Araldite (superglue) raised the crancase compression ratio then skimmed and polished the Ali head
Id try rings from a Honda 50 or something like that to see how it works. Long as the size is right and ring gap is close it should work because finding parts for this will be a nightmare

So thanks for giving someone like me the opportunity to still see.

Joe, I was watching some of your older videos and stumbled on this one of the 1967 Ducati Scooter. Cake Total Seal Piston Ring Company, if they don't have what you need they might be able to make them if you provide them with the information they would need to make some ? Worth the phone call ! ! ! I've used a ton of their piston rings for car engines for many years, great product and good people too ! ! !
Hey as far as the rings go, try googling 52mm piston rings. You can get a set of 2 for like $5 and use the original piston. If they don't fit you are only out by $5.
Don't hammer out wrist pins! You're putting a ton of pressure onto the crank bearing. Use a pin press or a U clamp over a large socket to press the pin out.
I'm thinking, next time you work on any of these old barn find rescues, just do the carbs first, get that out of the way dude! move that from last to first, then look for spark :) .... I'm like you, as soon as I see spark, i just want to put gas in and run!
Del'Orto Carbs were used on a number of early BMW boxer engines. Been a while so I don't know if anyone still does. As far as the rings and piston you could try similar engine specs in the Sachs engine lineup. I owned a BUNCH of old DKW Leading Link MX100's and was privy to some discussions during a few shop talks that these might be very close. The Sachs motors were SORELY under powered so they normally didn't get much abuse. Comparatively speaking of course. The 9 units I had got beat to crap but you couldn't tell because they just didn't have the oomph to tear anything up. 2 tech's I knew took the Leading Link front ends off of them and installed them on a few CZ's and Greeves Griffon that lunched it's own version. Good luck. That thing needs love!
I would check the diameter of the piston with a micrometer, check the skirt length and wrist pin inside diameter. Call a reputable company and see if they have something. If not there has to be a company that can mill one for you. Have a good day.
I always like to have everything degreased and washed up clean before I work on it, but maybe I'm just weird that way... 🙄 Edit: the most likely reason it wouldn't spark with the yellow wire is it was fiber core and that ignition isn't strong enough to carry voltage thru the fiber, wire core only. As for the jumped wire you had making sparks that was power from the gen making power for headlights ..🤔 Edit#2 look up piston and ring specs for other 2 stroke small bore engines and you'll most likely find your rings even if they have to be filed for proper gap. PS your killing me with the veneer calipers. 😞
Great video. Thanks for the tutorial on getting one of these running again. Now I just have to convince my neighbor to sell me her old barn find yamaha. Worst part is that the bike is under years of lawn furniture, wood and other trash.
I did same thing with choke cable on an 86 yamaha moped. I heated side of choke tube with pencil torch. Then used a flathead screw driver to carefully turn choke barrel to remove it. Also you had flywheel exposed so I use a corded drill on the flywheel nut to turn over engine. One for higher rpm on low compression and two so I don't break kick start or pull start. Other then that good video
I've been unfortunate enough to get many old and rare things running again. Always a challenge but find the radius & circumference and you should be able to make a ring from something newer work albeit with some possible ring grinding to get the gap. Honda Trail 50&90’s have been good for some of my weird and rare foreign jobs.
You shouldn’t have any problem using a different piston. I think someone had it apart and removed that ring. If it fell off it would have scratched up the cylinder.
That may be a problem. Diameter is no problem, but dome curve, wrist pin size, wrist pin center to top of dome, wrist pin center to skirt, skirt cutouts. As for the wiper ring, it was taken out in the past for some unknown reason. Only other was to go missing is to shatter and fly out the exhaust, if that is the case, there may be bits still in the exhaust system, but the cyl should show scratches
Used to own a 1960's iso milano diva, also a bin man find, used to bunny hop it, sold it to a guy that fully restored it, parts were hard to find, even 35 years ago. Biggest problem with it was we broke the kickstart shaft, looked like it was poor quality post war steel, had air bubbles in it, so maybe don't go trying to kickstart it like that, was waiting for it snap off. :) Good luck with restoring it or at least get it running.
I think this one project that needs a delicate touch. You have a rare find there. The right restoration done to it could bring you huge $$$$$. A shade tree rebuild will bring a small reward. Take your time on this one. 4, 5, 6, 10 videos on it will bring $$$$$ to you and fun for us watching. Thanks!
love watching this content man. I own a tuned yamaha aerox and I come across this channel when you bought that 3 wheeler that was old school. I hope you come across a honda cub ez90, that would be legedary :D
This bike definately needs a full restoration, its a very rare bike i've never seen one of them. As for the piston , you might be able to use one from a Piaggio Vespa from that era and have no problem
That machine should be in a museum. If it was in the UK or Italy, it would be worth a lot of money. But I don't know if the scooter scene is as big in the States.
No. The scooter scene isn't big at all here in the US. Some of our larger Cities may have a little presence. There's to much open road here. In which a powerful motor car is desired. Their looked at as toy for kids, on their way to a full size American truck/car.
To my understanding a Chinese pit bike 110cc is a 52.4mm bore, I’m sure you could use the rings from one of those, with a little modification to make it work. Hella availability and super cheap
I'd be in touch with the piston manufacturers with the relevant details. I've put different pistons in kart engines before. it's amazing what's out there.
Get the piston dimensions and try to find one. I'm into all motorsports, recently I got into motorized bicycles. To go fast, we do hybrid engines, where we take a Chinese bicycle engine kit for the bottom end case, then put race scooter cylinders, minarelli or piaggio/ aprillia am6 or chainsaw cylinders. You could try to contact rdm performance or smolik performance. They do performance parts for these motorized bicycles and do machine work, they could probably make you a piston. The engine looks quite similar to what we use.

Impressive work. I think the odometer is wrong. Ducati is still notorious for gauges breaking. Even their $27k Multistrada has multiple gas gauge failures. These scooters are worth a decent amount of money restored. Collectors love them.
That opening on the left side of the cylinder is upposed to be open. It`s there to let the hot air out. The engine is very similar to the Sachs engines in old Messerschmitt three wheelers.

Soda blasting would be the correct approach, sandblasting would take too much material off and leave unwanted marks on the metal.

Had no idea they made scooter this is why I lover ur account
Some stihl chainsaws take a 52mm piston. Worth a try even if the rings just work
For a few moments I saw Andrew Camarata's spirit flying in the air when he broke the choke cable!
I always like to have everything degreased and washed up clean before I work on it, but maybe I'm just weird that way... 🙄
Edit: the most likely reason it wouldn't spark with the yellow wire is it was fiber core and that ignition isn't strong enough to carry voltage thru the fiber, wire core only. As for the jumped wire you had making sparks that was power from the gen making power for headlights ..🤔
Edit#2 look up piston and ring specs for other 2 stroke small bore engines and you'll most likely find your rings even if they have to be filed for proper gap. PS your killing me with the veneer calipers. 😞
Not weird, you just do it right!
Good luck with restoring it or at least get it running.
Thanks!
What a fantastic winter project that would make for someone.
Great project! Keep the videos coming. Maybe Wiseco would be able to match something up. That would come with rings.
Or, ask Vinnie!!
love watching this content man. I own a tuned yamaha aerox and I come across this channel when you bought that 3 wheeler that was old school. I hope you come across a honda cub ez90, that would be legedary :D
Del Orto carbs were on some of the Aermacchi Sprints you have worked on in past videos, you may still be able to find parts for that....
That thing is bad ass.Deffinately worth a full restore.
.52mm pistons are used on those gas bicycle kits. And they also run a dual ring non-window piston..
Never even heard of this model. A very exciting project. Please keep us informed of your progress. I wish it was mine 😊
There we go ......".some play side to side ...cant believe the rod bearing is good " 😂😂😂I can't either 😂
This bike definately needs a full restoration, its a very rare bike i've never seen one of them. As for the piston , you might be able to use one from a Piaggio Vespa from that era and have no problem
Search for custom piston rings....theres places that make whatever you need. Kawasaki 100 cc bikes have 52.5
the Yamaha ag100 , dx100 yb100 all use a 52mm std bore piston so may work with this and i cant wait to see this project more
That machine should be in a museum.
If it was in the UK or Italy, it would be worth a lot of money.
But I don't know if the scooter scene is as big in the States.
Probably not at all that big sadly.
Lol. I was wondering when you were going to break out the drill motor😂. I was expecting that Kickstarter snap . Ducati scooter.😮
Measure the cylinder and piston, then look up the size. It may list the different bikes it will fit, you may be able to track it down that way.
Stihl uses a 52 mm piston on their 460 saws so they might work. I wish I kept the old piston when I rebuilt the last one I would send it to you.
I wish you luck in this restoration. I am a fan of scooters and bikes that are petal start equipped.
Nice find. Pistin rings for some other 100cc two strokes should fit.
50cc scooter tuning italy, aprilia, vespa, gilera.
Дукатти скутера очень редкие, не нужно искать именно этого производителя, просто: италия скутер, потому что для разных производителей один стандарт размеров запчастей. Удачи вам в работе над этим проектом! Очень редкий и интересный экземпляр.)
Bore x Stroke: 51 x 46 mm Compression Ratio: 100 Brio: 8.5:1 Capacity: 94 cc / 5.7 cu in Ignition: 6V 30W flywheel magneto, you dont have to look now ,,,,,,,,
*Never seen one of them before!!*
I use to work for a Vintage motorcycle company and thought i seen all the 1960's Ducati bikes!
That thing is definitely special enough to restore. Hone and mic that cylinder and see if WiseCo will make you a piston and rings for it.
BRAVO, this will be a great learning project as there is much to do.
There must be a piston to fit this from another application. Going to be a lot of research Joe.
Impressive work. I think the odometer is wrong. Ducati is still notorious for gauges breaking. Even their $27k Multistrada has multiple gas gauge failures. These scooters are worth a decent amount of money restored. Collectors love them.
The screwdriver and glove ASMR never gets old 😁
That opening on the left side of the cylinder is upposed to be open. It`s there to let the hot air out. The engine is very similar to the Sachs engines in old Messerschmitt three wheelers.
A2vintage Joe its time to invest in a sand blaster. Spot sand blasting would actually help in allot of your videos. Getting parts clean.
I believe this is the Ducati Brio with a 100cc motor they also made a Brio 48
salut a toi, super vidéo,courage tu va trouvé le piston ,et donc vive la suite
