- This is a new "director's cut" made from elements I had at my disposal but leaving out the John Newton hymn which was in the previous edition of the video. The reason why I had to come up with a new editing is somehow pretty ludicrous.
I was quite pleased to accept this invitation from the organizers of St Ferdinand's "Dimanches en talent" deacon François Desprez & parishioner Roland Bidon, himself a distinguished baritone.
For it gave me an opportunity to produce at last a live recording of R. Kipling's masterpiece and upload it. Poetry reading #8

St Ferdinand is the church where I was baptized but I never was a parishioner there. Nevertheless I started an unusual type of relationship with the parish some 12 years ago. Those of you who have seen my video entitled "«De plus en plus invisible pour la République» Non-Fiction2" will understand what I mean. Anyway there were people who knew I'm an actor or who may have guessed it. And as the deacon had seen my self-recorded videos on UA-cam, he invited me to read in public two poems: Villon's "Frères Humains" & Kipling's "If".
It was on the occasion of a recurrent get-together organized by the parish. Once a month they're holding "Les dimanches de Saint Ferdinand", an occasion for the parishioners to meet around tea and cakes, sometimes preceded by "Dimanches en talent".
This particular Sunday's programme was a bit special insofar as it featured a double bill. An amateur Gospel choir had also been invited. They had planned such a large repertoire that I was asked to restrict myself to two poems only.
As we were on the same bill I thought it only fair to include the audio of one of their hymns on the video. Besides you will notice that they remained on stage while I performed. I felt that not accounting for their presence would be contemptuous - and pretty weird too.
That's where I was very wrong. As I had been in touch (e-mail) with Sister M-C, the franciscan nun you can see seated at the keyboard, who said she would gladly inform the other members of the choir of the promotion brought by this video, I did not suspect that the slightest problem was ahead.
Rudyard Kipling's "If" (sometimes subtitled "A Father's Advice to His Son") - 1895.
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too; - Розваги
Your voice is like a general, a teacher, a mentor, a father who is, by all his heart and will, telling his protégé not to give up. Forever etched in my heart.
This is one of my favorite videos on UA-cam. It brings tears to my eyes and chills to my spine. Unbelievably powerful recitation.
I listen to this each morning. For myself and my son. Trying each day to be a better man than the day before and lead by example. For his soul and mine. The poem itself is great, but this reading of it makes it powerful.
My deepest thanks to you, Eric, for expressing your appreciation.
This reading of If has inspired me so much. I listen to it regularly and have committed it to memory. Thank you Oliver, you're very talented. I hope you're doing well wherever you are.
This is by far the best oration of this poem on the internet.
Thank you, I'm glad you've liked it.
Honestly so good , i cant listen it from any other person , i feel they just read it from a paper ,without any soul in it.
I listen to this every single day atleast once, it fuels me to be the best person I could be and the best man I could be
My my, Jp, what you're telling us is just great. I feel overjoyed.
Sir, your narration of this poem is beautiful. Thank you very much for giving voice to the stirring words of Kipling.

Your oration of this poem has changed my life more than one would expect.
The best reading of this poem by far.
Superbe narration !
Merci, Cyril. ☺
Jette aussi un oeil sur ma version "studio" du même poème.
This is my favorite reading of one of the most inspirational poems I've ever read. Not only is your voice incredible but the emotional interpretation is unique and powerful.
Thanks an awful lot for your sympathetic comment, "mop and bucket". Indeed the emotional impact which is inherent in the writing of poetry must find its correspondance in the actor's rendition. To me, a poem is no different from a monologue in a play; it is spoken by a character who's got a life of his own. Hence, a motivation of his own,
This version! ... Is read in a way that amplifies the impact of an already ground-shaking poem. I have fallen in love with these words and recite them from time to time. I find it amazing how words delivered in a particular way, with arcs of intensity and elegantly placed silences can move one's BEING back to who we really are... AND! to see again the potential we all have in our journeys from the early beginnings to the very end.
Thank you for expressing your appreciation in such an articulate way, Mr TC. It warms my soul.
@ Gratitude, for you gratitude sir :)
I will be attempting my own version one day :)
.... one day :)
Your voice is so powerful sir, I was introduced to this poem a few years ago in school and it resonated with me very much. I feel your voice brings an incredible amount of meaning and emotion to the poem. And I find myself coming back to listen to you read it. Thank you .
Your voice adds that powerful emotional connotation that makes this masterpeice touch thy soul.
Very powerful.
Oliver, this rendition is beyond exceptional. It is epic, magnificent, and so very human immemorial. It summons everything there is from the depths of a parent's emotion and human meaning in life and presents it for all to withold and take guidance from.

@ I found this beautiful reading through this video using your speech (ua-cam.com/video/zIFVwF35Jb0/v-deo.html) and it helped give me the determination to get ahead of my work (I'm a 4th year engineering student). I had to find the original audio and it brought me here. I wish I could've have heard it in person! Just wanted to let you know you helped give me a push. God bless!
