Great video, I’ll be experiencing slow pitch jigging for the first time next week, hope to get some fish
Wow! He's a virtual walking encyclopedia! Amazing teacher with experience and knowledge!
This fellow has a good presentation. Been fishing for 45 years and still pick up a few good tips on these videos.
Thanks Cap.
Why am I watching this? I can pretty much guarantee I'm not going to be vertical jigging any time in the near future. I'm still interested though. Says a lot for Captain Mike and his teaching.
This was very informative and not a sales pitch. Very useful.
Outstanding presentation!!! Well done, we appreciate your perspective on jigging techniques!!!
my first seminar and it is the best explanation on jigging that i have heard or read! excellent. cheers from New Caledonia.
Thank you for watching. - Capt Mike
Thanks for your useful and informative videos on a wide variety of south Florida /Bahama fishing ideas/techniques. Enjoyed this one on vertical jigging a lot !!!
Thanks for watching
Absolutely love these seminars Capt. Mike...thank you so much for taking your time to present and offer them online. I hope to meet you guys at some point, possibly on a pulley ridge trip in the near future.
On the topic of Slow pitch, I got absolutely obsessed a little before this video was posted. It has completely changed the way I approach fisheries I've targeted for years. On a recent trip to the gulf coast, We brought our slow pitch gear and several captains/mates approached us with apprehension on how lite the rods/reels were . On one trip, my wife promptly caught an 18lb red snapper on a daiwa sp jig. We made believers of that crew. LOL. Not only that, I've found that the diversity of species that respond is crazy. You honestly never know what's gonna hit those jigs.
I think its worth noting that a great portion of the mechanics of true slow pitch are very personal and specific. It's almost like a dance. You will also notice that the guys from place like Singapore, and New Zealand have vastly different approaches to the Japanese originators. They all have merit and are worth learning.
Setups:
6'5" Majorcraft 100-150g slow pitch NP-Jack rod/Accurate bv-300/pe3 ocea
6'8" Temple Reef Levitate slow pitch (zero) 60-200g rod/ Accurate bv-300/pe2.5 ocea
6'5" Black hole cape cod special slow pitch 90-350g rod/ Accurate bv2-500n/ PP max quatro 60lb
Great info, I'm totally hooked as well and you have to twist my arm nowadays to fish any other way. - Capt Mike
Great seminar Capt Mike, as always you go to the point every time. Thanks to you and your videos my fishing has improved like never before. Thank you very much!

Another great video Capt Mike. I really enjoy and learn a lot from these seminars you do. That new 3D sonar that's coming out is definitely awesome stuff and is going to change the game. And the slow pitch jigging with PE line sounds very interesting. Good stuff! Thank you and tight lines
Thank you. - Capt Mike
Florida Sport Fishing What size hooks should I use for pilchrads??
grade A+!!! thank you for the terrific lesson...
Thank you for watching. - Capt Mike
Crazy to see the amount of innovation and progress in jigging of any kind since this aired. PE line especially, now a days j braid 8 grand in 30lbs is the standard, and people are hauling up 40-50lbs grouper with it. Common to see folks using 15lbs in like 800ft and slaying. Wonder how the next 10 years will look
Thank you Capt Mike loved the video very informative
Thanks for watching. - Capt Mike
Watching from Philippines
Great seminar. The best explanation I've ever heard.
Guys, one suggestion, try sometimes vertical with inchiku jigs, you will be surprised!
Will def. give it a shot!
Greetings from the Aru Islands, Indonesia, greetings are always healthy and greetings strike
Capt. Mike..........loved it. Super over-view!! I've used the DOA scenario myself, so many times telling people about lures.....and SILHOUETTE! I'm a slow-pitch-jigger, via 'Jigging Master' wanna-be, don't get to practice enough. Fits N.E. Florida better.
Thanks for being a fan, stay tight! - Capt Mike
I wish you would leave links to the products you use that would be amazing love watching your videos you are awesome 👍🏻

I'll soon be in Florida and I hope to share it with you someday .... And sharing ideas in Jigging ...
Nice, thanks for watching. - Capt Mike
Excellent. Capt. Mike, Is it an option to attach a heavy duty swivel (of appropriate size) onto the Welded Eye (using a split ring) which you can then attach the Leader? Thank you.
Excellent!!! WOW. I learnt all I wanted to at this point about jigging...Practice Practice Practice now!!! Am gonna be doing Jigging soon for the first time in 500-600 ft of water (sigh). Can you tell me please what is the colour of the Williamson Benthos 100g Jig you mentioned as your Go-to? Will be doing a lot of jigging soon in various depths of water. Thank you in Advance.
PE stands for Poly Ethylene. and now day they come rated in LBs. thank you for the useful video
Thank you for watching. - Capt Mike
hey capt mike great video as usual...you mentioned that more information about this was on your website...can you post a link? I looked but couldn't find it. Thanks!
Great seminar Mike! I just have one question. What knot do you tie from the leader to the jig?
This was excellent! Thanks
Thank you for watching. - Capt Mike
Hey Capt. Mike, I am a dedicated fan of you and Carlos. You do the greatest job with all your videos and seminars. I feel like, you really want me to catch fish, and I truly love passing this same attitude to my friends and family, I love watching them getting "bent over" by a AJ or watching dolphin sky and there faces light up. I do have a question that I may have missed during your siminar. 1. How do you keep from the hooks our hook getting caught on the leader on the retrieve. About every other drop and retrieve I tend to get tangled up, "hook around leader" Thanks so much, Trey gulf shores ALabama.
Never happens to me. Are you fishing really long assist hooks on your jigs? I need to know exactly how you're rigging to identify the problem. - Capt Mike
Excellent ! can I be notified when and where the next seminar will take place ?
Check out Chaosfishing.com, - Capt Mike
Capt. Mike another great informative video. I think these types of videos are really helpful to anglers of all levels and will help grow the sport. So thank you for passing on your knowledge. Also, what Daiwa reel are you using?
Daiwa ISLA size 5000 & 7000 for jigging reels, thanks for watching! - Capt Mike
waw Jason Amaizing Fishing
Also, PE is likely UHMWPE. AKA Spectra. Same stuff bulletproof vests are made of.
Great channel i learned alot from you and I am thinking about start vertical jigging which one would you recommend Penn Carnage II Jigging rod or the Chaos Fishing SPVJ 500G 5'8" CHAOS Gold?
The Chaos SPVJ 500G is way too heavy! You do not need a jigging rod that heavy for this region, the SPVJ 20G would be much more appropriate. - Capt Mike
Hi Capt. Mike. Will any of the seminars that you did after this one be available on UA-cam or anywhere else to watch?
Yes, we will be posting them all on this channel just as soon as we can. - Capt Mike
Florida Sport Fishing great! Thank you very much. I can't make it to the seminars and I don't want to miss out on the great class. Thank you very much!
Excellent 👍👍

Capt. Mike..... awesome work man, I'm a fan of all your shows. I wanted to ask you what size jigging rod (length, weight, line class) would you recommend for a Saltist 5000 spinning reel? Keeping in mind the whole balance subject. Thanks and greetings from Venezuela my friend
Either a Chaos Gold SPVJ 165 or SPVJ 200, 6'0", load the reel with 30 lb braid and 50 lb. mono or flouro top shot. - Capt Mike
Captain Mike, Very educational video. Inshore and nearshore fishing in SW Florida a long time. However, Jigging is new to me. I am going on the Yankee Capt out of Key West for the 2 Day Marathon trip to the Dry Tortugas. Last weekend in November. I am building a Jig Rod. The blank is 7’10” 40lb. It is gonna have a LH Shimano Torium 20 Reel. 40lb braid. I am gonna spiral wrap the guides. Is that gonna be OK for that trip? I also have a 50lb 6’10” Conventional rod for bottom fishing. Additionally, I Have some 10oz, 8oz, 6oz, and 4oz Plain Silver Hammered Diamond Jigs and have found a couple of your “go-to” 100g Williamson Benthos Jigs for the trip. I know you have been on this boat, Any other suggestions?
Great video! I'd love to know the setups you're showing, particularly the lightest one.
At what exact time? I believe you are referring to Chaos SPVJ 6'0" 165 gr. - Capt Mike
For more information on slow pitch jigging look at Japanese Anglers Secrets. They have a great guide. I bought a Seigler LGN just for the techniques. The PE rating on Braid is pertaining to the thickness.
Thanks for watching and for the info, please stay in touch. - Capt Mike
Florida Sport Fishing of course Capt. Mike. I am a big fan. These Seminars are so great. Jigging is a rabbit hole to get into. Another great techniquw within jigging is "ebbing". If you think slow pick gets a lot more bites wait until you hear about ebbing. The man who was a pioneer regrets showing it to people, because of the impact it had on species lol.
Captain Mike, I recently bought some gold hammer diamond jigs without hooks or swivels . Can you please advise me as to what hooks and swivels to use on each end? They are 4oz jigs and ill be targeting grouper and snapper in the gulf. Thanks so much Captain Mike, I can't find any information anywhere on how to rig them!
Its very easy, simply purchase some assist hooks from Williamson or Gamakatsu. Include a HD split ring on the bottom side of hammered diamond jig, this is where assist hook will be affixed. With 4 oz jigs, you don't need assist hooks on top and bottom. I'd go with the small, or 3/0 size. These hooks are super strong and will hold up! - Capt Mike
Great presentation capt mike
I’m new to jigging and I got ugly stick tiger jig rod extra heavy and daiwa bg8000 loaded with 100 lb braid aiming whatever biting
Can u tell me if this is too much ? And why u said 100 lb braid would rip the rod or ur arm off I don’t get it , coz I’m new and I think the bigger the line the stronger .ty
Watch it again beginning to end.
Gracias, por la enseñanza
Captain Mike What's your thoughts on FG knot for braid to floro connection
Dan Swansons either the fg or pr knot are amazing expecially for casting lures. One thing to keep in mind is a back up plan on retying a new leader if it fails, because tying either depending where you fish could be difficult..
I have tried jigging twice, once I saw schools of trevally underneath, but none of them was biting.
Why wasn't I getting a reactionary bites?
Hi please suggest me what kind of rod I have to buy for 100 grms jigs and what length
Are you going to upload the black fin tuna seminar?
Yes, but its going to be a few weeks. - Capt Mike
Polynesian have been using that method for a long long time.
Mike, great video. I had no idea it was that detailed a technique. Did you say that reel is $700? I have had 3D sonar from Simrad for a while and it is great. I know they are not your sponsor.
Thanks for watching. - Capt Mike
What kind of leader do you use for toothy fish like king fish?
Wow! learned a great deal thank you. Subscribing.
Thank you. - Capt Mike
If the hooks are on the bottom and you tie to the welded ring on the top of the jig, and you catch a fish o the bottom hooks. You are then pulling on the jig and not a welded ring. You are then back to the old style of hook on bottom and tied at top.
Sweet seminars but Im from the west coast and I’ve never heard of stacking braid. 100 or 130 lb hollow core on a 50 size reel for cow tuna
West Coast anglers regularly load 50 wides w/100 lb braid, am I missing something?
Florida Sport Fishing
Are you missing anything?? Tf
Would a Penn Battle II 8000, 6’6” medium heady power moderate action rod with power pro 20-40 lb test work? I don’t have a huge budget right now. Now when you talk about lb test with braid, are you taking about the braids lb test diameter or actual lb test. Size jigs and brands for a setup like that? Looking to go for fish like amberjacks and whatever is pretty big and hungry
Good lock
Do you gut hook a lot of fish while vertical jigging
No, very few, the vast majority hooked in the mouth. - Capt Mike
Hi Capt. Mike. I would like to ask. Is this a balance set up, reel saltiga dogfight 7000h, rod saltiga airportable J58XXHS. Btw thanks for sharing your experience, skills and tips. I learn a lot from your channel.
Serious outfit, what are you targeting?
Will a daiwa bg 6500 be good for jigging
100%, load it with 30 - 50 lb Diamond Braid with a 20 ft. top shot of 50 lb. Diamond Presentation Fluorocarbon. - Capt Mike
Would it be ok is I used 250 yards of mono and 150 of braid for my spin fisher 6500 for vertical jigging
I would go straight mono all of the way for extra line capacity with a 25 ft mono topshot. - Capt Mike
He meant braid
Is it all about balance? I wasn’t sure.
Lol. Look at some of the comment questions.
It's my first time into vertical jigging. I order a Shimano Trevala spinning. Power: Heavy / Action : Moderate Fast. I'm gonna out fit with Bg5000 with 65Lb braided powerPro line with 80Lb Vanish Fluorocarbon top shop..... any views about my set up
Scale down to 30 lb braid with 50 lb. flouro top shot. More line capacity. More sensitive. less scope. Capt Mike
@@FloridaSportFishing thank you.
Yeah that was definitely too heavy for the bg 5000
thanks great video.i have zaragosa 10 k what size braid do you recommend.i enjoy your seminar.thank you for sharing your experiences and skills.
josue cunningham for a 10,000 real, I would use 70-100lb braid and with that size you can fit a ton
I would agree, a size 10000 is big and can handle nearly anything with plenty of line capacity. 60, 70, 80, would all be fine. - Capt Mike
when will the seminar on dolphin from the other day get uploaded. Didn't get a chance to watch it
Its going to be a while before we edit it and post it, however you can watch the seminar in its entirety on Facebook.com/floridasportfishing right now. - Capt Mike
Nice video, Captain Mike. What are the two rod and reel setups you presented? Thank you.
Feb 17 2018. jigging rod 6-4 7oz max biminni twist with a bristol knot leader. This is where I'm lost. Do I need a barrel swivel in between the leader and the jigg and if so what knot.. thanks
The date?? First time out offshore I'm knew plz don't bash me on this..
Reel should be loaded with 30-50 lb Diamond Braid, with approx 25 ft. top shop of mono or fluorocarbon. Im now connecting Diamond Braid to mono/fluoro leader with FG Knot. No swivel, tie end of leader directly to split ring on jig with small loop knot. - Capt Mike
Florida Sport Fishing thanks i really appreciated
When you say you are going to drop the jig to a particular depth, what is your method of knowing how far you have dropped the jig?
Estimate, experience, etc. Of course, you could pull out and measure 50 ft intervals and mark line with permanent marker as a reference until you're dialed in. - Capt Mike
Florida Sport Fishing good idea! Thanks for the reply!
Count seconds per jig rod and depth. Say your in 100’. If it takes 20 seconds for your jig A on rod A to get to 100. Should be about 45 at 200... I count.
Would A daiwa bg 5000 reel with 33lbs drag , 65lb braid310yds/and a Penn carnage jigging rodd be a good combo for jigging
That reel is perfect. However I'd look into another rod if I were you. I'd reccomend a Phenix Megalodon PE4-8 at the minimum, or a Jigging Master Three Kings Special.
hey cant. mike. where can i get the hammered diamond jigs?
Most major box box stores sell them, you can also get them online through tackle catalogs, etc. - Capt Mike
which brand do you prefer?
What exact rod is that you are showing during this seminar?
At what time stamp? - Capt Mike
Florida Sport Fishing 6:45
Also what’s the biggest fish you would catch on that setup
Chaos SPVJ 165G 6'0", with a quality spinning reel loaded with fresh 50 lb braid, there are few fish you couldn't handle with this outfit! - Capt Mike
Is 25 lb drag 300 yards of 30lb (tested to 45 lb) line enough?
I have a Shimano 6k twinpower reel and looking to get into vertical jigging more. I plan to target yellowfin up to 60lbs and decent sized AJ's off wrecks in south florida. I want to go as light as I can on the rod but do not want to worry about the rod not being able to handle the fish. Which rod would you recommend? I was thinking a 200g medium heavy rod or maybe even a 100g medium rod if i could get away with it
For 60 lb yellowfins, nothing less than the 200! - Capt Mike
Probably a dumb question: WHY the leader is bigger (Lb. test) than our lines IE 40 Braid line to 60 Mono.... Is'nt suppose that the WEAKEST LINK LAW always work ? OR: our 40 Braid line suppose to break before 50 Mono as well as 60, 70, 80... ?
Braid is smaller and cuts mono in any knot easier. Better to use next size up mono. And with a Bimini twist on the braid side doubling braid size. If you use same size on both. That knot breaks easier every time. That is definitely the weakest link if you do it that way.
What about surface irons
hi Capt. what is the brand name of the rod?
They are custom rods by chaos.
Chaos Rods
I have a 4000 spinfisher 5 with 30 lb braid, only holds 200 yds tho and 17lb of drag. Is this too light?
Yes, I would def. step it up a bit. You need more line capacity and drag. - Capt Mike
I'm confused I have the 4500, they don't sell a 4000 and judging by the specs that's a 3500.
What the rod sir ??
Chaos SPVJ 6'6" 165 & 200 gr. We custom build and sell them, call me if interested - 954.942.7261
What reel is that on your rod in this vid?
i want to be a happy fisherman
Don't we all! - Capt Mike
U didn't go over flat falls much other than the shimano comparison
You need a more parabolic rod for the shimano flatfalls.
$800 !!! 🤯
I know this video is kinda old by now, but I lost a fish because it fell through the pier board cracked deck 😂
Daiwa bg is $130 and is better then most off these reels for $400+
Does anyone get nervous when he swings those jigs with sharp hooks really close to himself while talking?
Nope, if you’ve bin fishing as long as he has you stop caring. Not to say you’ll be stupid with a hook and get your self with it but you just don’t really think about it
👍👍👍👍👍
Next time you catch a 20 pound Bonita, bleed it, and then fillet it down to the very inner part of the loin and you will be blown away at how good it is
Not too bad but I'll take the $120 Fin Nor Lethal LT 100 any day of the week. No need for a $800-1000 reel.
Tiger woods probably doesn’t need a 5000$ set of clubs either. But.
if you paid 400.00 for that rod and it still has a stronger side than you got ripped off rods today rods are equally as strong 360
Lol... you need high quality gear.... shows a Diawa 😂
