Like most of the artists talked about on your channel, it’s impossible to choose one favorite Roger Miller song. Husbands and Wives, One Dyin’ and a Buryin’, Old Toy Trains, When Two Worlds Collide.
Otis, these up close and personal stories that are featured on your channel bring so much enjoyment to my life. I’m always sorry when the ending comes. I don’t think I’ve ever watched one when I didn’t wish there were just a few more minutes of content. I live in Indianapolis too. I hope I get to say hello and shake your hand sometime.

My father-in-law was here for Christmas last week. He was in the living room and saw my stereo and records and asked if I play any Roger Miller for my son Cash who is 4. I looked down at Cash and sang the words “You Can’t Rollerskate..” and my son jumped in with “In a Buffalo Herd”. Then his Poppy asked if he’d heard Dang Me. I sang the chorus up to the “from the highest…” and he spread his arms out and sang “treeeeeeee!” just like the song. People still live River Miller. New ones everyday.

@@otisgibbs I 2nd that! That’s just good parenting in my book!👍 I have my own momma to thank for playing his (& many other of the “greats”) records/8-tracks while growing up! Im truly blessed that she exposed to me to such a wide variety of amazing music (Including vintage polka!) so, of course I had all 5 of my own listening to in utero! I’ve always had a soft spot for Roger Miller & it makes me proud that my kids could sing the rest of the line of that song too…along w/ “King of the road”…partly b/c I sang it every single time I swept the kitchen floor!😂 I felt like it was my duty as a good momma to “skool them” on all the “true artists” from ALL genres of music possible. To this day when an extra amazing song comes on…I say “music education time!!” & make them stop what they’re doing & truly listen to it… plus, give them as much info on the back story it & the musician anything I know about that particular song…which is where YOU come in Otis! >>> thanks to you teaching me…I now have even more info to pass on about these amazing artists so their legacy lives on & are never forgotten! Thanks from the bottom of my heart for all that ya do to make that happen myfriend!👍😉

Footprints in the Snow, Dang Me, Tall Tall Trees and many others. He'll, the one he cowrote with Dwight, It Only Hurts When I Cry was great. The word genius gets thrown around a lot, but Roger Miller was a genius, A real musical treasure.

Shawn Camp is one of the guys who everyone should know but most have never heard of. He is just amazing, I could listen him sing, play or just talk. His writing is great, his proficency with instuments is totally mind blowing. He is so entertaining to listen to he should be on TV instead of some of the people who are. I love "Husbands and Wives".

I'd love to see more Roger Miller stories. I always enjoy the stories of the crazy things he'd get up to from other artists around him and unfortunately I worry many of them will be lost to time sooner or later. I've been reading a biography called 'Dang Him!' on him by Don Cusic recently and it's a great read. He was a complex man and the last ten years or so of his life are especially interesting to read about.
There's one story where Roger came out on to a balcony to join his wife Mary. He said 'Mary, say hello to Nancy' to which Mary replied 'Say hello to who?". Roger replied "My angel, Nancy. Say hello to my angel". "Roger, nobody's there.". Roger then said "Mary, don't be rude. Say hello to Nancy". Roger would pass away the next day.
That's always stuck with me, as it strikes as a usual Roger Miller-ism, but the fact it was right before his death is almost paranormal. There's a few things in the book that I think of often. There's a live performance of 'Dang me' in which Roger states he wrote the song about his father, though reading about his early life and habits, it would appear to be more about Roger himself from an autobiographical standpoint.
Such an interesting person to read into and as a songwriter myself, he holds a place of incredible writing with a mystique I can categorise alongside Townes. One of my favourite live recordings is of Roger's last tour. The tour was just him and his guitar, playing through a large amount of his hits, but feels to be the most personal record we have of Roger from himself.
Check it out and the book too if you have time. Nonetheless, thanks for this Otis!

No surprise Roger Miller would have down dark times. Personalities like Roger Miller or Robin Williams cannot stay on a mountain top all the time. The thing is, when they crash, they have farther to fall.

A couple of years after Roger had passed my wife & I were on a walk with a neighbor who stopped us and said , this house here was Roger Millers.' I don't know if I believed him but, I was looking at buying property from Warren Beatty & Shirley McClain's place was close by, so maybe. The house was out of Santa Fe a ways sort of on the high road to Taos. Really in Chimayo. Never did hear a definitive word on it. Wonder if Shawn knows. Thanks Otis.

"Roger had a darkness about him." No surprise here, comedic minds often traffic in darkness. They say Mark Twain rarely smiled, never laughed though he made others laugh with his early day stand-up and in his writing. Roger certainly had a Twain-like wit. My favorite song? Probably River in the Rain. Love the imagery... “"like a long white train." Twain would approve.

My Dad would bellow "Half A Mind" when my Mom would get after him, odd memory. Otis, I subscribed to you channel right after John Prine left this planet and went back home. Could you maybe answer some burning questions for me? When you play a gig, what are your standards? Do you have covers you like? How do you handle hecklers? Are you a latest album kind a guy or are you all over your catalog? When are you coming to Colorado? I haven't found a living room big enough yet for you to play in, but I just got a super comfy pull out couch to crash on, right between Boulder and Denver, you should come.
