Hello Richard. I started learning this beautiful piece about an year ago and your comments helped me a lot. I am in section H and until H i am able to play cleanly at about 90% tempo. I do not know how to read sheet music so your lesson along with halcyons are the only ones that greatly greatly helped me a lot and once i could never imagine myself even crossing the wall and now i am way past half the piece and can effortlessly play it. Its amazing to play and i cant wait to finish it. Its been a wonderful journey so far and the highs i got after weeks and weeks of practicing for hours everyday consistently for each section has overwhelmingly made me happy. Ofcourse im still far from perfect but. I am now facing this new problem which is, i feel i am kinda in a crisis because its like, i feel like i wouldnt know what to do next and no piece can get closer to this one in terms of the sheer beauty in this masterpiece. And you know its like once you nail it it no longer feels like a mountain thats inconquerable and that it sort of sad. I have always picked up harder music to challenge me. The last one was arabesque and i played it to the point of boredom haha. Its funny, and amazing and sad at the same time as i feel i am nearing the end. The repeating notes are definitely going to be a challenge and i havent been there yet but ah. I have watched this particulsr video lesson so many times i almost know what youre going to say next and its been like sort of a piano musical journey. I hope someday i will be able to record myself and upload it. I am worried what i am going to do once i master it. It will take a while but i can see it closer to realization than ever before. But anyways thanks again for this.
I went through exactly the same thing. Following Unravel I felt empty for a while. But be afraid not, all of Animenz’s arrangements are very challenging. But at this point, you can only go Animenz. There’s no going back to the easy stuff now.

@@RichardYangPiano Yes. It is evidently quite slow, though. But that's because I started learning this piece just 5-6 months into my piano journey 💀. (I know that was a stupid decision, but I can play the wall at 80% speed somewhat consistently, so there's no point stopping now.)
@@abe6229 5-6 months eh, that’s impressive. From what I imagine your level is, my tip is to play one note at a time. Before you’re sure what to play, don’t until you are sure. Be sure to know what you’re playing.
Gonna be buying a digital piano soon (looking at the FP-30X), and while the Moonlight Sonata is the primary reason why I want to learn the piano, I'll try to learn this too, so this tutorial is great to have (let's just hope I'm not completely talentless)
@@RichardYangPiano I forgot to clarify that I was indeed talking about the first movement, my bad. I've only had some minor experience with the piano (and learned how to read sheet music in school), but at the end of this year I'll finally be getting my own one and learn how to play the first movement (I just love it, I can't explain why) and found this tutorial for this insane piece which seems really good for the way I prefer to learn.
Strictly speaking, it’s for proper voicing (ie connecting D back to Bd). But ultimately, with pedal down, you can use any fingering that works. In fact, it is a good idea to explore all fingering options. When you’re just learning, pick fingering that works. When you become a master, all different fingerings should work.
I agree, the middle voice makes the melody better, I think with practice any finger combination could work, I'm just a beginner though (2 months) but I don't plan on conquering "the wall" anytime soon 😆 the intro is enough for me
Best tutorial on youtube for unravel. Thank you so much for making this. I've been practicing for almost a month now and made it to the last line of page 2. Just wanted to say thank you because without this video I'd be stuck on the first line. I do have one question for bar 17 on the first page. Im struggling to play the left and right hand synced togehter. I feel like Im too slow on the right hand. Do you have any tips for playing it fast and togehter? Greetings from Germany :)
From all of the UA-cam videos I watch of people attempting this, the common theme is, all of them played so fast I don’t think they know what they’re playing. I’m almost sure that they know they don’t know what they’re playing! Summary, slow down, way down, even if it means playing note by note. You gotta play so slowly that you can get this perfectly, otherwise bad habits will form fast. Think 3-2-1-2-2 which is what happening on the LH.
@@RichardYangPiano isn´t the 3-2-1-2-2 part in Bar 16? I meant the part at 4:29 .But thanks for the tip about slowing down. Although I know it´s a bad habit I sometimes find myself doing it regardless.
@@zGranat_ next measure, realize that the highest note in LH (B-) matches up with the melody notes on the RH. So incorporate that info into the way you think when executing the LH. You want to time it so that you bring out the top notes (B-).

I don’t think that’s “notoriously” difficult. It’s a fairly standard run in classical. Put it in perspective, the repeated notes section in Heaven’s Feel Medley, that one is very difficult.
Unfortunately no classical training here :( But i am so happy with myself i am almost playing at tempo until this section with ease and enjoying it finally with fewer mistakes. Only 1/4 of this arrangement is left. Cant wait to finish it by end of this year. Hopefully by summer 2025 i shall attempt a take on this masterpiece.

Honestly, you really need a 88-key to properly play this. For the notes, you can slow down the playback in UA-cam down to 0.25x, which will allow you to see exactly what note (and fingering) is played

@@tomv.d.m.f219 You want to leave this until you level up. Myth is that if you keep playing a piece, even way beyond your level, you could eventually play it. This is NOT correct. When you’re not at the right level, you’ll end up experimenting with many different things, and many would be incorrect. Very soon, these will get built into your muscle memory, which kinda ruins the chance of you eventually being able to play it. UNLESS, if you’re willing to go so slow, as to play one note at a time, and keep each note perfect, no matter how slow. But honestly, if you do not yet read sheet music, you should try all kinds of stuff other than Animenz. You can try Final Fantasy, for example, much more doable. Keep trying Unravel at your level you will be discouraged and not getting the right benefit from playing piano.
Special thanks from India.❤❤ I am 15 years old. I managed to play the WALL but the only problem is I dont have a piano at home. All I have is a 5 octave keyboard. Piano is super expensive. 😥😥
@@RichardYangPiano it's a great video, i will use it to improve and learn some new parts. i am self-taught, i can't read notes, i started learning unravel with a piano tiles video from "chopiano" (dude has a new youtube name now) 6 months after i started playing the piano. i already learned pieces like clair de lune, river flows in you, merry christmas mr. Lawrence, in the end within my first year of playing the piano, i'm quite ambitious. but it took me several months to get to the half way of this piece, i manage to play the first 2mins quite good (of course with some errors and the wall still at 60-80% accuracy at full speed), now i want to finish learning this piece and i will definitely use your advice on some diffucult parts ro improve and learn!
Good stuff. Just remember to take it very slow. More so that you don’t officially read sheet music. By relying on muscle memory, you must make sure your muscle is storing the “correct” memory. This is often overlooked by those self-taught.
Hmm… this is in fact not a bad question. Here’s my own rule, whenever possible, use as little as possible. But this statement won’t help you I suppose. So here it goes: If you have no idea at all, play a piece without pedal at all. Obviously things are not gonna sound at all nice. Now, if and only if a certain section is too “dry”, add some pedal. This is a bare-minimal pedal approach. In addition, unless otherwise noted, whenever the chord changes, you change pedal. In most cases you will never hold the pedal through a whole measure. You likely have to change on every beat or 2nd beat. When you advance in piano, this will become second nature eventually. The final advice, experiment until you get the sound that you like.
I’m on part G even tho I don’t know how to read sheet music and never took lessons at all and barely reaching my first year on piano 😭👍I’m surprised at myself honestly
@@crlynx_yt if you can “truly learn” Unravel, whatever you endeavor will work out. But, under one year, the best thing you should try is the Hange’s Final Theme. It has the best impressive-to-difficulty ratio.
This is the one: ua-cam.com/video/1netdCSnjVc/v-deo.html This particular performance, it took me about 2.5 weeks of touch time. Definitely did not master it. But I think it turned out decent. If you go to my Animenz playlist, I have quite a few that I think I actually mastered, like Brave Shine, Call of Silence, etc. enjoy.
@@rybackbond6311 Ya, in the future, to request a song, you want to somehow get the sheet for me eh. UA-cam pays me way too little. I’m still net negative after buying all of Animenz’s sheets.
At my level, this took me 1.5 weeks. So if you’re not at my level, and you can play this, even if just the wall, in 3 days, I might just as well quit. Top tier pianists this should take a few weeks. For normal pianists, this can take months (for someone who can eventually play it). At this difficulty, the piece is NOT for every one.
@@kuyaachristian Synthesia is everywhere else. Here I encourage people to actually read music and support the artist. Synthesia won’t carry you very far in the musical journey.
Hey its me again :). I progressed to page 4 but wanted to come back to bar 50-57 on page 3 in order to practice that part. Do you maybe have some tips on how to play the part fast while keeping the main melody on top? When i play too fast the top notes get lost between the rest but if I slow it down to much it doesn't sound right either. Maybe its just an experience thing that you learn after time but I thought asking for any suggestions would be a good idea.
There must exist a tempo so slow that you can play this perfectly. If you haven’t found it, you’re playing way too fast. If you did, stay there until you’re ready to go faster. There’s no other way, you gotta slow down.
@@RichardYangPiano first of all sorry for asking so much and thank you for your answers. Now Im having problems with adding the remaining notes (left hand) in bar 66-73 (the arpeggio). Just like you said in the video, I started with only playing the octaves and chords in the left hand while focusing on the right hand. Im handling that pretty well now but as dumb as it might sound, Im not sure when to play the remaining notes. On the sheet, for example in bar 66 it looks like you play the e flat simultaneously to the a in the right hand. In bar 70 tho it looks like they are to be played separately. Its a bit hard to identify in any recordings i found too. Way too fast even at 0.25x speed. Maybe you could tell me when to play those notes. Or is it even necessary to be so exact?
@@zGranat_ if you see my video description, you’ll learn that kept this recording because it was my first time getting through the wall clean. I hadn’t finished learning yet at the time. For example, I usually do tempo adjustment near the end. So this is obviously far from perfect. Learn the notes here. Follow Animenz’s video as official guide.
That’s a very broad question. Short answer is, you keep playing different kinds of music, the more you play the more you improve. There’s no magical way to just get there.
This piece has been my dream to play, but it's so difficult.. If I may ask, how does it compare to difficult classical piano pieces like La Campanella, which one is harder in your personal opinion?
@@RichardYangPiano I actually practiced la campanella a little bit, especially the parts that require good technique (like the begining and the repeated notes in the right hand) I'm able to do them consistently but in unravel I have to put so much focus and sweat just to practice. Maybe it's just the speed that I can't keep up 😅
@@steve7669 in my “Classical” playlist, you’ll find La Campanella. That’s from a long time ago. But it was years after my prime with one single take. So it didn’t sound very polished. But you can probably tell I used to play it well. Much more difficult than Unravel.
currently learning this. The difficulty is so unbalanced lmfao. I was able to master the beginning in a couple of hours but the wall is so hard to do even in half speed
how do i increase strength and dex at tremelo part in section F, i still cant get it right ? do i press hard or just focus on wrist rotation ,not sure how i can accentuate the notes especially the middle note with the index finger. :( been practicing for weeks
Bigger hands will help. But if your hands are as small as mine, make sure the fingers are standing strong (no weak fingers), and let your wrist do the work. Try to feel what it’s like to lock your 2nd and 5th finger together so that they always play together. When you force it locked, you’ll feel tension on the forearm. But once you’re familiar with what it feels like to lock these two fingers together, you can next experiment different ways to relax. Easier said than done I know.
If you’re talking about securing D, pg 3 first line, observe that the melody notes correspond with the left hand. For the 16th notes, try to feel the 3-3-2 flow. Practice by clapping 3 notes, 3 notes, then 2 notes, with accent on the first of each group. That should help you.
@@RichardYangPiano ty but i mean like on the first page at the end of the second line does it come at speed to the end or do i make something wrong because its sounds like so bad on ur vid the part is min 2:40
Hello guys im now at the third page and i wanted to ask how do u practice 2 melodys in 1 hand corectly like it doesnt sound like it like it should be would be nich how i could learn this cause i dont find anything about it on YT
@@TobZ750 the overall practice strategy is going to sound boring. You want to play so slowly that you can play it perfectly. How slow, try one beat every 10 seconds. After you play a note, wait until you find the next note, you’re sure of it, then play. However slow. It’s by playing parts “perfectly” that trains your hand/brain. Mistakes are there to confuse you. I cannot stress this enough. A lot of people think I can just magically play this because I’m “good”. That’s not true. I practiced so slowly to get it. But when I do practice, I aim to play perfectly however slow. Now that I’m good, my “slow” may not be too slow, but it’s a pace that I can play perfectly.
Thanks for the quick reply , but how would you recommend I get to that level , i have been playing for 4 months I can play a simplified version of the song but can’t quite catch the rhythm for some parts , although I have no clue how to read sheet music I feel like Iam rushing it 😂😂😂
@@Justmewapiano To be very honest, if you’re at “months”, Animenz is not for you YET. Of course you can try. But my advice as a teacher is, please don’t. Reason is, obviously you’ll have a hard time to even get the notes. During this trial and error, a LOT of bad habits and mistakes will be built into your muscle memory, which pretty much guarantees you’ll never be able to play it later on, the piece is ruined. Now, there are ways to get there. You want to play something challenging but not something way over your head, that’s how you can achieve actual progress. I recommend Final Fantasy Piano Collections. Start from FF IV, and work your way up. These are great music, manageable for intermediate players, “doable” by beginners eventually. That’s the right path. Jumping straight to Unravel will ruin your chance of ever playing it.
@@RichardYangPianoomg thanks so much for your advice I will definitely do that , I had no idea it can ruin the piece for me 😢, I will check out the final fantasy collections, final question should I learn the collection using sheet music or just like UA-cam tutorials?
@@Justmewapiano Tip for beginner: reading music is extremely important. If you don’t yet know how, a cheat is to stare at the sheet music while listening to the recording. And convince yourself that what you’re looking at is what is being played. And once you can “imitate”, do this exercise again. Convince yourself that this is it while listening to the recording. Those UA-cam MIDI synthesizer videos, while they don’t do you any harm, they won’t help “too” much. You can eventually follow the fingering and stuff. But I have to reiterate, reading music is extremely important. The more you can read the faster you can learn. Take me as an example. I used to pump out a piece every other day. If I didn’t know how to read fluently, my channel, as is, would’ve taken a decade to build.

Just gotta put in the time.
At exactly 2:43 I almost always hit the D# instead of D with my index finger, wouldn't it be easier to play with thumb and middle finger?
Strictly speaking, it’s for proper voicing (ie connecting D back to Bd). But ultimately, with pedal down, you can use any fingering that works. In fact, it is a good idea to explore all fingering options. When you’re just learning, pick fingering that works. When you become a master, all different fingerings should work.
I agree, the middle voice makes the melody better, I think with practice any finger combination could work, I'm just a beginner though (2 months) but I don't plan on conquering "the wall" anytime soon 😆 the intro is enough for me

It’s so cool that my video is turning into a must-watch for anyone learning Unravel.
18 months later, starting section "I" now... nervous about the most difficult notorious repeating notes part at 45:30
I don’t think that’s “notoriously” difficult. It’s a fairly standard run in classical. Put it in perspective, the repeated notes section in Heaven’s Feel Medley, that one is very difficult.
Unfortunately no classical training here :(
But i am so happy with myself i am almost playing at tempo until this section with ease and enjoying it finally with fewer mistakes. Only 1/4 of this arrangement is left. Cant wait to finish it by end of this year. Hopefully by summer 2025 i shall attempt a take on this masterpiece.

Good stuff. Just remember to take it very slow. More so that you don’t officially read sheet music. By relying on muscle memory, you must make sure your muscle is storing the “correct” memory. This is often overlooked by those self-taught.
@@RichardYangPiano i will, thanks for the advice!
Hi, love your tutorial. How do you know when and when not to pedal and how much?
Hmm… this is in fact not a bad question. Here’s my own rule, whenever possible, use as little as possible. But this statement won’t help you I suppose. So here it goes:
If you have no idea at all, play a piece without pedal at all.

If you’re talking about securing D, pg 3 first line, observe that the melody notes correspond with the left hand.
