This is probably the best interpretation of this track as a dramatic, intense piece I've heard. It really captures the mood of this point in the game--kind of that "oh, shit" moment when you KNOW it's serious.
Damn... I just gave the 666th like for a reply by SquigglyDigg. Oh yeah, and I completely agree with you on that. The feeling is absolutely nailed with this piece.
If undertale was a movie, then it would have two disks, one for the Pacifist run, and one for the Genocide run... also you would be the music composer, this is AMAZING.
Or how about something like what I'm doing with the Undertale novel I'm writing? The story stays true to the Pacifist Route, but pays reference to the Genocide Route through Frisk's nightmares. In my novel, Frisk originally goes to the Underground with the intention of killing all monsters, but as they meet people and get to know what the Underground is really like (and realize how horribly things would turn out if they started killing) , they realize they don't want to hurt anyone, and in the end they set everyone free.
Hell yes, I love the buildup. A lot of covers just skip the drop (0:30) entirely and rush into the next part of the melody (0:54), but that tension is always the best part for me. So many things done right.
I love the "Hans Zimmer" cinematic feeling in this arrangement, as you described. It gives so much depth to this epic arrangement of an epic boss battle piece. Awesome work!
... Okay. This is, hands down, my all-time favourite orchestral arrangement for Megalovania that I have ever seen. It actually sounds like a live orchestra - a trait which I very much appreciate in fan-made orchestral covers. I definitely look forward to your next arrangement, if it's something Undertale related then I'm probably going to explode from joy. x)
Asgore: "What are you doing? It's too soon!" Sans: "We're trying to keep Chara in a little bit longer! The timeline is collapsing!" *This OST plays. (if you didn't get it, it's an Inception reference)
You make the orchestra sound good, and I applaud you for that. I've listened to multiple versions of orchestra versions of Megalovania, and they all try to hard to replicate the original, but you put originality into your arrangement, and make it your own, and it sounds amazing :)
I have a hunch that this song's meant to be about Sans' perspective, rather than the players (as you've concluded). A soundtrack does more than set mood and sound pretty. When done right, they convey entire concepts, setting up scenes and telling us what's in it. Music involves pure intentions, and is thus a projection of thouhts. Since thoughts can only exist whenever considered forms of truth, for all intents and purposes, the song's actually the very scene in question. Music, being an artform closely tied to pure intentilns, explains why music is said to be the language of emotions. From what I'm able to understand the song, Sans is actually calling out the player for the vileness within their heart; the first verse is them noting what the player is doing, the second part is them calling them out on it, and the third part with the guitars is him showing disgust to the player's own actions. (Note that Sans only ever fights you during the Genocide route, where he has a reason to fight, beyond just because you're killing everyone in sight. He's otherwise perfectly willing to keep his promise to Toriel, no matter how bitter he grows towards you.)
Don't get me wrong, I believe the song's still about the player due to the tone of the song. It's just that I believe the point of view is that of Sans himself. More specifically, it represents how he's feels towards the player at that point in the game.
Well, you just kinda supported the theory that this is the player's theme song. Let's say that us (the player) is in Sans' position, and Frisk is the "final boss", this theme would be playing because it's trying to invoke a certain feeling into the player. But because the player is the "final boss", it's just trying to display that emotion, rather than invoke it.
Just because the song's from the POV of Sans instead of the player (as with most other songs) does not automatically make the player's theme. Want to know anothet song sung from the POV of the opposing monster instead of Frisk? Fight Against a True Hero. Only the first 8 bars could ever me associated with Frisk's reactions. The rest represents Undyne's plight against the player and the sense of urgency she's feeling due to the amount of evil she found in your heart. Undyne's the only known monster ever to form determination on her own (instead of it being injected into her by Alphys), ans she's using it against you, a perceived evil. Back to Megalovania, it's meant to represent Sans' wrath, the only time within the entire game where you can see him in action. It's meant to represent that fight, and that fight alone.
Well, that's not the only thing Sans attacks first, which no other monster does. Normally you attack first, and the boss theme is usually associated with the person who is being attacked. Also, the term "Megalovania" is related to the word "Megalomaniac", which is a person who starves for power. It'd make more sense for it to be the player's theme because sans isn't one to strive for power. He doesn't crave it. In fact, he only fights you when he absolutely has to. Instead, you're the one that's been grinding to get higher levels and be able to kill stronger bosses. You're the one craving power. So while the song may represent sans' wrath, it's still the player's theme song
Cameron Dean It's called "pragmatism". It's always possible for the other monsters to do the exact same thing Sans usually does. They just don't, either out of kindness or something else. Sans is the only monster willing to fight dirty. Him, and the Mad Dummy (albeit, in a failed manner). A protagonist can be a villain as well as a hero, while the antagonist can be a hero as well. The protagonist would be the viewpoint character, which, in this case, would be Chara. (Wouldn't be wise to consider them Frisk at that point in the game.) Also, I know that the name of the song's derieved from Megalomania, but Chara's an egomaniac, not a megalomaniac. He'a doing it because it boosts his ego, not because he craves power. In fact, he doesn't even crave power otherwise, stating at the end that the player who made him like that is even more despicable than he is. In this game, power is measured by your "Level of ViolencE" and your "Execution Points", not "Level" and "Experience Points". During non-genocidal routes, Sans states that those represent how hardened your heart is towards the killing of others. Monsters only go down in one strike because their bodies can't handle the sheer vileness of such a heart. The song's called "Megalovania" even before it was rearranged for Undertale. Therefore, unless we know if the fact that it can be applied to them would be deliberate, any and all claims that it is only amounts to interpretation (or, as the fandom calls it, "headcanon").
You, sir, made something INCREDIBLE. This is the ONLY orchestration of Megalovania from those I heard that really felt close to the spirit of the original. And you achieved it in orchestration, which is a whole new level of difficulty. I LOVE it!
The orchestral structure of this reminded me of "I Am the Doctor" from Doctor Who, and I layered the two songs on top of each other and they actually weren't too bad together. xD
Very, very good. I was expecting a somewhat muddles mess of notes that felt twice as long as they should have, due to this piece's plenty of short notes and fast sequences. I like your clever use of string parts to minimize that. I feel like there were a few parts that were just a little... strange. I feel like listening to it over just a few more times and ironing out discordant notes, when there were any, could have made the very small bits of strangeness into neat, unpredictable creativity. Keep at it, Yours are certainly the best orchestrations of undertale music I've seen.
I'm listening to this while typing my dissertation that's due in 3 days and I have to say, it's working very well and makes every word I add feel epic. This is brilliant :)
hate me all you want but i think i like this way more than the original, it sends so many more chills throughout my entire body yes, even that one spot
This is the kind of remix that does Megalovania justice. It feels like a chaotic fight and a conversation at the same time. A chaotic, tense conversation between Sans and the player.
Having discovered you via your orchestration of Heartache (wonderful, btw), I noticed this and decided to check it out, even though I felt a piece like Megalovania couldn't be thematically replicated with the instruments in an orchestra. I am so glad you proved me wrong; this was spectacular.
Uniquely for The Second Narrator this cover is actually pretty short, and it's very interesting to see how standard most of the structure is. It of course adds in that cool battle percussion, and takes a cool unique tone of focusing on the strategic side of the battle, mixing in the final clash of two opponents fighting across time and space with the mental trickery that comes along with it. It feels fast, fleeting, and analytical in a way you don't often see. I mean, it's literally a battle where neither opponent can hit the other, where each is focused primarily on dodging, how samurai can you get? Oh, and did I say it kept the structure pretty closely? Yeah that's until you get to the end of the brass section, where it suddenly diverges with a short lead in back to the... well the lead, building up the tension only to suddenly drop it back for the sneakiest solo I've ever heard. Also is that a bit of Metallic Madness snuck in there? How fitting that a song about Sans's fight would be filled with fakeouts huh? I love the pan flute that leads the song back on track, finally embracing the madness with the bridge while bits of the lead peak in and out around you, as if you're being forced to shift focus on everything! I do love that the song does give it its final epic moment though, it's a nice pay-off that despite everything going on, this is a song you would be wise to take seriously! Even if it doesn't take itself seriously.
THIS IS AMAZING. I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO AN AMAZING JOB WITH MEGALOVANIA (well you do an amazing job with everything bUT THIS IS MORE THAN AMAZING. THIS IS EPIC. GOS BLESS THIS ORCHESTRAL ARRANGEMENT. AND THANK YOU, FOR EXISTING!
Sounds good, I wish there was a bit more... "Power" to the drums though. They sound a bit distant. Shake the very bones of the player! To get to this song, one need to have done something which makes you very cold to begin with! But still, another masterpiece in its own way really. Keep it coming! ;)
I love that you're using different instruments to compliment the melodies and accent in certain places. The harpsichord is a really nice touch, you've got woodwinds doing work here and there, the strings are doing their jobs without sounding muddy, and the horns give power to the whole track. Very good!
Wow, this is awesome. I always thought of this song as a metal/synth/rock song, but this... this really shows that most songs if not all songs can be turned into other styles while keeping the same feel. :3 Excellent work. +1 subscriber.
"I concluded that this theme is actually the protagonist's boss theme. " I had never thought of it like that. You just turned my whole perception of this inside out, and I LOVE IT! It makes SO much more sense than it did before. I realized early on that it is unlike any other music in the game. It doesn't fit in with anything else. As you said, it has a sense of "evil" embedded in it on a core level. This song, when compared to the rest of the soundtrack, feels like something has gone terribly wrong. Thinking of it as YOUR boss theme instead of Sans' makes a lot more sense to me. Because in Geno, the fallen human is what has gone wrong. Sans is the good guy, trying in one last desperate measure to stop them.
I got to YT as soon as I got a message about your new cover. Great job (as always)! I prefer this one over the original ;) Are you going to do these as well? -Bergentrückung / Asgore -Battle Against a True Hero
Your assessment re: whose theme this is is the fanon. This is the genocide MC's theme for sans (much like how Battle Against a True Hero is your theme for Undyne -- in both cases the game is saying 'they're the heroes here, so they get good music for their fights against you')
Of course it's fanon, and so is yours (unless Toby has actually said some words on this subject which I doubt). Everyone's free to have their own interpretation of what the soundtrack "means".
If they ever make an Undertale movie (whether or not that would be a good thing is beside the point), this version of Megalovania would be a must for the trailer. Awesome job Second Narrator
What's great about this mix is that it actually accents the power in the music when the main melody drops - that's supposed to be really intense, which a lot of other covers don't do.

Tension is high...
The Drama could not be avoided
Your assessment re: whose theme this is is the fanon. This is the genocide MC's theme for sans (much like how Battle Against a True Hero is your theme for Undyne -- in both cases the game is saying 'they're the heroes here, so they get good music for their fights against you')
Of course it's fanon, and so is yours (unless Toby has actually said some words on this subject which I doubt). Everyone's free to have their own interpretation of what the soundtrack "means".
Very interesting arrangement for this particular piece. Sounds like a chase sequence with some fights going on in between
0.O :0 wow just wow, what I love is how new the tune sounds but it's recognisable! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
If they ever make an Undertale movie (whether or not that would be a good thing is beside the point), this version of Megalovania would be a must for the trailer.
Awesome job Second Narrator

Just a thousand views away from a million. And a well deserved million views it'll be!
What's great about this mix is that it actually accents the power in the music when the main melody drops - that's supposed to be really intense, which a lot of other covers don't do.
This is one of the few songs that encourage me to maximize my speakers.
This is so great dude :)

I can only imagine the look on the kids face when they see karma starin' em down right in the eye, blasters aimed for one thing. Their black heart.
