The Korean game I remember much less clearly and I think I lost it. I was, in the part I remember, in a southern part of the map and I was fighting enemies below me. The longer the game and the more death and destruction, the better. There was no tactical play whatsoever... all strategic deployment of spamming whatever unit.
@@bibbobella Its a joke, though in seriousness, the extreme ends of mmr/elo systems do tend to suffer. There just aren't enough people in those parts of the bell curve to make nicely balanced games. The matchmaking either has to be slow or the system needs imbalanced games.
I would like to countermand that other commenter. I enjoy it when you shout "SUPPLIIIIIES!" It's not like you're always shouting stuff, and it's memetic, kind of like a catch phrase.
On the ladder / ranked comments: i think part of the difficulty there is you start in the middle of the ladder, not the bottom. Some games start you off at the bottom - you're in Bronze by default and have to work your way up. Whereas AoE starts you right in the middle of the pack. So if you want to get to an appropriate rank, you have to lose quite a bit. Especially if you're new or don't really know what you're doing. So it can make for a tough experience - especially for people who don't fully realize this is how it works! Imagine being a noob (or like me you don't have to imagine) and you jump into ranked and get absolutely blasted a few times in a row. You think "man, I have no chance even against the lowest players!? How am I supposed to make any progress?" But you don't realize that you're starting out towards the middle rather than towards the bottom. My second ever ladder game I got tower rushed. Not a great experience for starting out on ladder. I imagine others have had similar experiences.
Agree with this, it should start from 0 elo, so it's not punishing for new players that want to try ranked game. I can imagine how stressfull to lose 10 game in row because they completely new to the game
DEFINITELY. It's not nice when you are literally a giant noob and you get TC dropped in the dark age. Not kidding. I was like 'is this really the meta?'
This way is better. If everyone started at zero, new players would constantly be getting annihilated by skilled players working their way up the ranks. By starting everyone at the middle, you minimize the maximum possible distance between any player's starting rank and their actual skill level, so people get placed where they're supposed to be much faster, get into appropriate matches faster, and spend less time being frustrated by steamrolls.
@@mrosskne I agree, I don't think my comment meant to say it's a bad thing but some may have interpreted it that way. The system itself isn't the problem - the problem is that the game doesn't explain this. As a new player people may not expect to start at 1000 elo or understand what that will mean for their experience.
I looked up T90 the other day.. He places around 70 in NA. At a 50% win rate. Keep playing ranked! I found my elo it's around 800 and the ranked matches are fun as hell now.
When i used to play this game i never really played ranked but if i played like i did then i'd definitely be low ELO. I was very rigid in the way i played i wouldnt advance to the next age until i researched every technology, i had to have 20 vill on food & wood, 10 vills on gold and stone, and gave up to any kind of pressure to easily unless i had a way to wall an tower the attacks.
That lumber camp at 9:38 was a high IQ strat, he saw how indecisive his opponent was and knew if he ever tried to attack; his army would be stuck in a loop going forwards and backwards. Love the videos btw :)
Had my first ranked experience recently, after watching over the last few weeks and playing on a laptop that ran the equivalent of two potatoes following Xbox release, first game I was way in over my head on Isles and we got absolutely trounced and unfortunately in my second game we got one AFK definitely some more watching and practice before I return to the ranked scene. Love watching you cast/play, GG against Emu when you ran for dinner, what a watch!
actually hilarious! Red is me when i was in school, playing aoe2 while i was supposed to be doing homework and parents would walk by so i would minimize the game and they wouldnt see the tab at the bottom of the computer😂

Thank you for the cast! :)
I think blue was red's boss and noticed that his opponent was one of his employee. Then he probably sent red to run some errands for the business right away so that he could get that easy win. :D
He was also talking about how Blue wasnt such a bad player, even though Red was afk for 15 minutes, came back and if he had then pumped all res into paladin, attacked and gone afk again. He wouldve crushed Blue. 11

I played at work a few times. My pc at home couldnt handle DE but i was an average hd player so I’d go afk when a patient would walk in ( walk in chiro clinic ) and I’d come back after the visit and i actually won a few of those when I first started playing de because they were matching me with people who were new to the game so i felt like it actually gave a few of them a fighting chance… but yeah sometimes id get 10 patients in a row and it would be an hour later and i was long dead 💀… I remember one guy had converted large numbers of my battle elephants while I was away and when i came back i was so confused out how he was making them as the britons or whatever he was. Good times… but I finally bought a laptop 🤙
I'm a big fan of AoE, and I just found your chanel and your content is so funny and I really enjoy it! I remember to be that kind of person to click all techs because "the more, the better, lol"! Good stuf!
To "fix" the "people that play 4 ranked, lose all, and give up", I think a simple solution would be, when you start your ranked "career", just play a match against a person, online, who more closely match the highest density of rank available, because in probabilistic terms, that person will belong in that zone. Ex: join in, first game. 1% players are 0-200, 5% are 200-500, 7% 500-700, 15% 700-1000, 45% 1000-1400, 27% 1400-1700, .... So, my first game, I immediately join the 1000-1400 rank, which is where most people are. I lose, and I immediately jump to the 700-1000. Then I win, now, the "jumps" are slower and slower.... until, at the 10 match, I already have a good idea where I belong. This would just make the initial trip easier.
This video has finally inspired me to get the game (played it a bit when it first came out in 1999). As bad as I last was at this game, I now see there's still a place for me to have some successes. :D
In regards to T90 talking about using a game vs the AI to get an initial Elo placement; King of Fighters XV does this. You enter ranked mode for the first time and it asks you to play against the AI 3 times (IIRC it's three different difficulty levels), and it will then assign you a rank based on your performance. It's pretty cool, and I think in a game with an even bigger playerbase like AoE it would be a good system. Obviously it's faster to play 3 games in a fighting game than it is in an RTS, but there could be some kind of way to transfer that with playing one game vs AI etc. I think it should be optional though, but with the warning that if you skip the AI game you'll get thrown into the 'mid rank'.
When I was young, I palyed AoK on PS2 with max of 4 players and 100 population (but only with up to 3 players, with the full 4 players, you only have max 75 pop). When I first played AoC on PC, I never had more than 25 villagers in Imperial Age, which to get there took me like an hour or so. The Medium AI in AoC was an impossible challenge for me to master. Now I am about on par with the Hard AI in AoE:DE. I don't know my Elo, because I didn't play multiplayer yet.
In theory they could also account for things like APM and how quickly your eco ramps up, maybe other stuff as well. Compare those values to the values at various ELO levels.
yeah, if I'm not spending a lot of time trying to get better, I don't really think it's worth the effort and the stress. Not that I expect to play well immediately, but even the process of realizing where I need to improve is stressful and unless I am all in on a game then it's definitely not worth it
God this reminds me of a LAGtv starcraft cast with a player who tried the "build a spare building, fly it off to the corner and line your SCVs up next to your comand center" strat to make their opponent think that they were AFK/that the game glitched out. and then just sat like that for about 30 minutes while their opponent just never attacked.
I used to build my castle with 1 villager. I was always afraid to build a castle far away from my base because it would take so long and it might not finish. Of course I didn’t think about sending an army of villagers to build a castle because… honestly I don’t know why.
I feel like Luca is a kid who was playing at night past their bedtime, quickly turning off his screen and pretending to be asleep whenever their parents came in. We've all done it.
I actually make forward lumber camps (and farms) when playing against my much more noob friends. They never scout the map after revealing an area once and since they're always 2 or more against me my town might fall due to overwhelming numbers, but my production aren't :D
I feel like red knows exactly on what elo he is, so he knows hes got time, lets his vils do their thing, gets to make himself a nice sandwhich, comes back, queues some stuff and then eats his sandwhich before attacking.
I remember a World of Warcraft raid, where in the middle of a fight, one of the players announced that he went to the sauna. Didn't return for 30 minutes. He was Finnish.
CS:GO does something similar you must play 10 games before you can play ranked and rank up but dependent how many you won or lost that determined your ranked(Elo) bracket. However this is all done in a special queue that isn't ranked and you will go against other players doing the same thing and not others that are ranked until you have completed your 10 games.
i played as a kid and returned for DE. Only then i started playing ranked and get seated at 800. Worked my way up through LEL hints up to 940. Now i often use the quickplay lobby to try diffrent strategys besides booming without loosing ELO. I hope when i return to rank i will finally reach my goal of 1000 ELO
I was so young when I first played this game that I couldn't read English yet(not my mother tongue) and honestly, didn't know it was a game to fight in. It was my first time playing an RTS. I would place all sorts of buildings and build all sorts of things and suddenly the look of the buildings would change with little waterfalls and such and I loved it. I also remember opening a map and exploring and finding a building that shot at me. I had this king so I walked him up to the building that shot arrows at me in the hope it wouldn't shoot my king. It did and that ended the game. I was so confused.
Blue was the absoute classic LEL here. Do not attack until: - every single tech is researched - every forward ressource is taken - you have at least one of every possible unit the game offers - military is built up to pop limit
When I was at a small private school we knew computers better than the computer teacher, so we snuck on a bunch of SNES games on floppy disks (this was over 20 years ago). So when she wasn't looking we were playing Megaman and Bomberman and stuff lol
Hey T90. I was actually scrolling thru spectate games for ranked matches. And saw ur match up againdt Klashnikov 2.0 which was a really interesting game with klash's tower rush. And seeing his wins an losses only being 60-1 at the time u matched up against him. His win rate 92% super crazy. Love ur content and gameplay and would like to play a comm game with u sometime.
Just wanted everyone to know that today I ate a Wendy's, Burger King, and McDonald's spicy chicken sandwich. My result are: 1 Wendy's; 2 McDonald's; 3 Burger King. Wendy's was by far the best. McDonalds and BK were similar but the BK sandwich was a big sloppy mess so I gave the edge to McD's. Ok have a nice day ppl.
I think newbies to AOE2 often think resources are immediately deposited in their bank as soon as it was collected (because that's what most other RTS do)
What I find most interesting is that blue is aware of the gathering point of their military buildings, but doesn't seem to know that it just works the same with the town center.
I have not played AoE in 20 years and blue was painful to watch xD But to be honest, it was massively satisfying to see the whole base getting leveled and everything get slaughtered. Takes me back.

The longer the game and the more death and destruction, the better. There was no tactical play whatsoever... all strategic deployment of spamming whatever unit.
Let them leave,I enjoy when content creators actually have a personality.
Red realized Blue was his son and went to the store to buy milk
How is this fair, blue has more than 3 times more elo than red
Seriously, they need to fix match making, this is rediculous
@@kenanderson3954 yeah, its abluesurd
I mean at some point it can be hard to avoid....You could have 1 elo player vs a 3 elo player and it would still be 3 times as much elo....
I enjoy it when you shout "SUPPLIIIIIES!" It's not like you're always shouting stuff, and it's memetic, kind of like a catch phrase.
disappointed by the lack of MURDER HOLES in this vid
Me: *gets forward-based*
This way is better.
I went through some recorded games from Luca and it is not uncommon that the APM drops to zero. It doesn't happen always, so it is very weird
I was very rigid in the way i played i wouldnt advance to the next age until i researched every technology, i had to have 20 vill on food & wood, 10 vills on gold and stone, and gave up to any kind of pressure to easily unless i had a way to wall an tower the attacks.
gotta get that 100% tech on the achievements tab
T90, I love the way you yell SUPPLIES!!!!
"You went AFK for two hours to die like this?"
It looks to me like Blue has a strategic minds by building all those chokepoints coridors leading to his castles and armies.
"Setting a gather point for queued up Villagers? Why not just auto-play the whole game?!"
I'm guilty of taking the stone from the middle every single arena game, never did with wood though 🤣🤣
actually hilarious! Red is me when i was in school, playing aoe2 while i was supposed to be doing homework and parents would walk by so i would minimize the game and they wouldnt see the tab at the bottom of the computer😂
Awww for the last couple weeks I had to realise that the LEL uploads were always from the parts of the stream that I caught live (even though I usually would only tune in for 30-45min), but I hadn't seen this one, and my ohh my :D
Also T90, you screaming 'supplies' and 'heated shot' IS the reason I tune into LEL in the first place so please keep up the great work!!! Thank you for the cast! :)
I saw once game in total war warhammer where one player went AFk imidiatly and never returned... he won
I used to hate when I accidently made a gather point with my TC and villagers would no longer spawn neatly right in front of it
I think blue was red's boss and noticed that his opponent was one of his employee. Then he probably sent red to run some errands for the business right away so that he could get that easy win. :D
lmao
That weird sound at 8:10 😂😂 T90 got offended , scared and disappointed at the same time.
"there was a tower, it was terrifying" lmao xD
How much further can the ELO bar lower at this point? we've had to have seen the actual worse AOE players still playing by now
Well, they had still 2 digits of Elo. Acording to AoE2 Ratings there is a person with an Elo between 0 and 9 xD
"Blue is a very knowledgeable player... maybe doesn't know what does what..." man, you're sure trying hard to see the best in these guys.
He was also talking about how Blue wasnt such a bad player, even though Red was afk for 15 minutes, came back and if he had then pumped all res into paladin, attacked and gone afk again. He wouldve crushed Blue. 11
i had some funnie gummies and watching this is just a ridiculous fun experience all around. so much extrapolation in the commentary but the stories are TIGHT
i used to always build barracks on left side of the town center with blacksmith on right with houses in the back for aesthetic reasons as well as the fact without horkeys 3 buildings are right next to each other for research and production
T90 sneaking out of math class...that explains his math skills
Having market blacksmith next to the tc makes sense because go to tc hotkey is the easiest and most important
Good stuf!
Man the AFK strat is strong. You walk away and when you come back you have a huge stockpile of resources to defeat the other player with lol.
Plenty of elo systems have something like this. A trial period where elo fluctuates highly.
red played this game as if it was an idle clicker - just upgrade stuff to the point of autonomy and leave the game to do its thing.
Please don't listen to the hater. I only subbed to this channel to listen to you yell TEUUUUtons and KoREEEans. If you stop doing it, I will cry.
8:09 12 Ah! Being rushed!
this brought me so much pure joy starting with the houses in the back of blue's base.
About gaming at school: I had a CD-R that had ZSnes and some games on it. Passed it around to my buddies and we would net play TMNT: Turtles in Time
In theory they could also account for things like APM and how quickly your eco ramps up, maybe other stuff as well. Compare those values to the values at various ELO levels.
My problem playing ranked is that I'm a try-hard. I can't relax, I have to do my best, but that's just stressful.
yeah, if I'm not spending a lot of time trying to get better, I don't really think it's worth the effort and the stress. Not that I expect to play well immediately, but even the process of realizing where I need to improve is stressful and unless I am all in on a game then it's definitely not worth it
Come back for part 2. T90 casts a two hour video of the menu screen.
Way to go bud.
3:17 woah what how do i get smaller trees in my games?
That Blacksmith placement for blue reminds me of vanilla Conquerors AI
I respect that red didn't have idle vills while AFK
God this reminds me of a LAGtv starcraft cast with a player who tried the "build a spare building, fly it off to the corner and line your SCVs up next to your comand center" strat to make their opponent think that they were AFK/that the game glitched out.
and then just sat like that for about 30 minutes while their opponent just never attacked.
10:40 - T90 trys to do math. 39:53 - T90 admits he would skip math class in high school to play video games.
40:36 T90 claims he's good with math in his head.
I laugh every time T90 does the sound effects 😂
I feel like red knows exactly on what elo he is, so he knows hes got time, lets his vils do their thing, gets to make himself a nice sandwhich, comes back, queues some stuff and then eats his sandwhich before attacking.
Takes 40 minutes to make a sandwich? It better be the best sandwich ever!
I remember a World of Warcraft raid, where in the middle of a fight, one of the players announced that he went to the sauna.
Didn't return for 30 minutes.
He was Finnish.
Res is such an inspiration to play even when you don't have the time.
Great game!
res?
CS:GO does something similar you must play 10 games before you can play ranked and rank up but dependent how many you won or lost that determined your ranked(Elo) bracket. However this is all done in a special queue that isn't ranked and you will go against other players doing the same thing and not others that are ranked until you have completed your 10 games.
That attack noise at 10:32 better be in the T90 Sound Mod Pack...
I just watched a game where the player was AFK. What is my life.
i played as a kid and returned for DE. Only then i started playing ranked and get seated at 800. Worked my way up through LEL hints up to 940. Now i often use the quickplay lobby to try diffrent strategys besides booming without loosing ELO. I hope when i return to rank i will finally reach my goal of 1000 ELO
today i played my 3rd rank game ,i won without military ,i dropped a castle and my opponent resigns
Castles are scary
yeah i won via gathering 650 stone 😂😂
I was so young when I first played this game that I couldn't read English yet(not my mother tongue) and honestly, didn't know it was a game to fight in. It was my first time playing an RTS.
I would place all sorts of buildings and build all sorts of things and suddenly the look of the buildings would change with little waterfalls and such and I loved it.
I also remember opening a map and exploring and finding a building that shot at me. I had this king so I walked him up to the building that shot arrows at me in the hope it wouldn't shoot my king. It did and that ended the game. I was so confused.
Lol this made my day! Hilarious commentary!
8:09 Blue, the blacksmith next to the town centre is so terrible! Don't you know about pollution? :D
9:35 He's stealing the forest lmao
Blue was the absoute classic LEL here. Do not attack until:
- every single tech is researched
- every forward ressource is taken
- you have at least one of every possible unit the game offers
- military is built up to pop limit
When I was at a small private school we knew computers better than the computer teacher, so we snuck on a bunch of SNES games on floppy disks (this was over 20 years ago). So when she wasn't looking we were playing Megaman and Bomberman and stuff lol
My theory is that red tabbed out to watch a strategy video for his civilization.
I have never played AoE2 but I love the videos and the community. Just now I bought the game, installing it now. Wish me luck people ! =)

I think newbies to AOE2 often think resources are immediately deposited in their bank as soon as it was collected (because that's what most other RTS do)
Hah. Thank you for casting this respectfully and humorously.
IIRC StarCraft 2 has now some kind of "find a right start ranking/league by AI matches" approach, but not sure if it was there from the start.
Ah yes, the Great Boar Battle of 52, many lives were lost that day.
I bet red actually thought it was paused, since he came back after 30 minutes without having been attacked
Finally a game between players I could actually beat
I like the 'supplies!' yell
What I find most interesting is that blue is aware of the gathering point of their military buildings, but doesn't seem to know that it just works the same with the town center.
I have not played AoE in 20 years and blue was painful to watch xD But to be honest, it was massively satisfying to see the whole base getting leveled and everything get slaughtered. Takes me back.
