Excellent comparison. I am confident that your 'compare and contrast' of the R and F here will help a lot of people who are deliberating between the two models. Thanks.
mate the way you rode the wr250f seemed natural, you just flowed with the bike and i think riding the wr250f will get your confidence up and soon youll be ringing the bike out to its rev limiter
Thanks for watching Trail_Rider01! The WRR is a mid to high end small but comfy couch, the WRF is a the stylish and functional office chair that your coworkers are jealous of - different beasts!
crj moto I might add a hardcore trail bike to the garage too but having a tough time choosing a bike. Thinking about a Beta 300rr, Beta 500 rs, KTM or a Husky, The WRF's are really nice too but I want to try a different manufacturer for a change.
I just sat on the newest batch of Beta's - they scream fun! The good - I got a killer deal on my wr250f, that's why I chose it. The bad - with the time and $ trying to get it dialed in for me I could have gone with any of the other manufacturers for about the same $.
crj moto yep that's the drawback with japanese bikes, they are cheaper but after adding stuff on the bike that KTM, Beta, Husqvarna, etc already comes with, you are not really saving.
Is the F taller than the R? How does the gearbox compare... the wider ratio of the R to the closer ratio of the F? You would think in the dirt the F would have the better gearbox and provide better torque to the rear wheel. That was fun to watch, what a cool place to ride and play around.
The 250f is taller, the transmission tighter, and more aggressive in every way. Tall seat-height due to more clearance down low. If you were racing and hitting technical obstacles like jumps, hill-climbs, etc., the 250f is the way to go. The WRR is like the older more mature dirtbike that says "go ahead and stand and rip it 250f, I'll be sitting and chilling with my heated grips on and really not that far behind you in the end".
Also a factor to mention is the F had an advantage of being a 2015 vs the R at 2010. I believe the R has slightly improved since. So maybe if the R was a 2015 also, you could probably get away with a 5 sec. reduction giving it a time of 5:29.
2015 was a new year for the F (FI) but I don't think they've ever changed the R since its intro in 2008. Either way, the F is definitely lighter and faster. However, the extra weight and predictable throttle give the R more traction and more confidence at times. I bet given a few laps to try, I could catch the F... Thanks for watching!
I'll take the R. Less maintenance, longer life, retail price is less and street legal ready. Plus if CycleCruza gives it love then it must be good, right? Lol.
Is the wr250f terrible on maintenance like ktms? It seems like a sweet bike but less maintenance is better for me I have wrenching. I had a 09 crf450x that I got plated. It was sweet but sucked in the road. It vibrated a lot and only had 5 gears. I didn’t need that much power anyways but the wr250r May be too weak lol.
It depends what you are using it for. It is essentially the racier version of the wr250f (comes from the factory w/ competition kit). If you don't need / want lighting and all you are using it for is trail riding, I'd say the FX is better. Let me know what you wind up with!
crj moto well, I already own a HONDA CRF250L. I use this for my daily commute. Recently , I changed my tires to knobbies so I could go on the trail. My friends keep telling me to change bikes since the CRF250L is a heavy bike and when I get stuck in the ruts , nobody would help me get out of them. But no must admit the CRF250L is perfect for the road. So I’m thinking of getting a pure trail bike.
@@surgfish if you want a road bike youdont want the yz250fx. If you want to fly off road and have a race bike then the yz250fx is one of the best enduro/ cross trainers out there. a touch lighter than the wr250f, a bit more power, alot more snappy.
Thanks for watching Jammarules! It's a giant two wheel playground here in Western Colorado! And I agree, the wr250f is pretty awesome looking. A little "meaner" of a stance than the R
That corner of town is no-man's land lol. I found a stolen car out there once, wouldn't be surprised to find worse. There's a couple compounds on the outskirts of the OHV area I don't go near...
I'm only now seeing this, I was thinking about getting a wr250f but then hearing that it is high maintenance and the wr250r is low maintenance my mind has been changed the wr250r looks better than this 250f anyways
I rode what I would call black diamond singletrack on the R last weekend and it did fine. And I hauled a$$ home on the twisty tarmac (41 miles) comfortably : )
Thanks for watching bullet ben! Yes. The WRR is ride and forget it, the WRF is not. Frequent oil changes, air filter cleaning, check this, adjust that. Not horrible but definitely high maintenance.
@@crjmoto probably have the ability but about 10 year ago it started to really hurt when you go down moto cross and super cross are a young man's game they have no fear of going down look back in 2 wheel history all the best riders are taken out by fear of crash we all have recovered from injury but you never recover nerve I can man handle that wr and I have know fear of it hurting me and to the beginner you look like king of the track again
I'm running a 48t in the back (13/48) and 65 mph is pushing it. Stock is something like 43t and I could cruise comfortably at 70 mph. It's a little bike though regardless of gearing, under 60 mph is best
He asked about the F not the R. Mine is 13 52 stock sprocket sizes for 2006 wr250f. and even then it will hit 75 mph for sure but comfortably 55 mph going down the road, mine is street legal. Your bike sounds like it needs opened up, I bet the horse power numbers are not much different between your R and F models but they could be if your F wasn't restricted so much. Mine will climb and never bog like a dang Billy goat with how low geared it is along with a FMF titanium power core pipe grey wire snipped and the after market carb bowl R and D brand. I have read that it is normal to take my bike from stock 27 or 28 hp up to 35 or 36 rather easily with not much money just by derestricting it. It should climb like a beast though and sound like one to. I wish I could come run this loop it looks bad ass, and you are a good rider too. My crf250l is geared stock 14 40 now for road I use 13 40 and for my off road rims I run 13 42 and this helps a lot with the steep climbs and bog but my wrf is still ten teeth larger on the rear sprocket at 52 and with 10 or so more hp and this equals climb anything with ease, but it does like to be pushed at higher rpm for peak power. Race engine vs street or dual sport engine they are just different breeds altogether. Mine also has an after market Aceabris 3.4 gallon tanks on both bikes and love it especially on the wr it drinks more fuel.
I found the throttle snappy when from closed, cracking it open. It has too much timing just as you crack it and you need to plug in the tuner to fix it. Compared to the early 07/8 there is a massive difference in the 15/16 which is not far behind a FE350 or 350 exc
So true. G2 throttle tamer helps but still needs tweaking of the ECU. The first 5% of throttle is tough to manage, the rest is perfect for just about anything.
So the Yamaha WR250R was updated/refreshed in 2015? What exactly did they change? I can't seem to find much information about this. I have a street legal 2001 Kawasaki KDX220R. Its great for the trails and the dirt and maybe some roads if you're going 40/50mph or less. Im looking to get a WR250R as my enduro bike and keep the KDX220 for the trips to the woods and trails all day.
Concerning your comment about the twitchy throttle. Have you looked into a G2 Dirt Tamer? It can do wonders for throttle control and they make one for this bike. Www.g2ergo.com/store/g2-dirt-tamer/
Hey Eric, thanks for watching! I added one and there was an improvement. I still feel like the bulk of the problem is the ECU. I've mapped from mud to race modes and all are twitchy. I do stand by the G2 though, def improvement and would buy again
The bike is tall! I recommend an older wr250f (pre-2015), there's a lot more parts (ex. lowering links) available for them to make it better suited for you. Let me know what you wind up with!

Get a KTM 690 enduro.
What is your choice of motorcycle for adventure in the 250 cc class?
Is WR 250 suitable for adventure?!
The wr250R yes! I'm riding a killer KTM 2stroke these days and I still dream of the adventures the wr250R was capable of.
