I once asked a radio station to play "I'm Free" by the Stones, but they played the same song title by The Who. Guess you can't always get what you want...

There's a so-called classic rock radio station in my area that boasts of one of the largest music libraries in the Northeast but what they play (over & over) are only about 50 different songs! They play only 1 song by Jimi Hendrix but it's just a cover of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower"!

Melinda…I can go you one better! I’ve been giving the gift of vinyl to quite a few friends…What’s cool is finding out what your favorite vinyl lover’s favorite artists are, or if they have a Discogs wish list, look at what types of grails are on their list and surprise them with a grail or two…If you’re musically inclined and know the other person’s tastes really well, give them an artist they might not be expecting to get! Another idea…Throw in some stickers, buttons, ephemera, etc. from a favorite record store…Also, what about thiis…Find out where the vinyl lover buys his record sleeves and get him a gift card or even get him or her a pack or two of the types of sleeves they usually buy…We always think of the records, but never the sleeves…Another cool idea…A record tote or record bag in that person’s favorite color, if possible or a vinyl bag from a favorite record store…The shirts are good, too…One of my local record stores is even offering “surprise grab boxes” with 15-20 records per box…Each one is hand curated by the staff (because they have SOOOO many records) and you never know what you’re gonna get, which makes it even more of a surprise! A gift card to that person’s favorite online site would be good, too…Think EBay or individual record store web sites…A personalized record crate could be nice, as well….Lots of gift options out there! If you can dig deeper to find out that vinyl lover’s personal tastes and get them something that aligns with those tastes, it makes the gift that much more special, unique, fun and memorable!

    • @MelindaMurphy

I recall a wonderful yule album we played with the less 'tackier' songs of recent years.More traditional albeit schmaltzier offerings which combined with others-'Carole of the bells'-'Toyland' (Debbie Reynolds), 'Aspenglow' (John Denver-utterly gorgeous) and stalwarts like Nat King Cole and Dean Martin, really created the requisite aural majesty of crimble.Johnny Cash's-'I heard the Bells On Christmas Day' has long been my favourite from this long disappeared gem of a record.A song rarely heard anywhere which seems a bit odd ?
Not a christmas fan anymore alas but i sure love the great tunes from those master composers of their time and of course their awesome interpreters.Greg Lake remains my only 'concession to modernity' lol.Nice vid.

As they say, "It's better to give than to receive". 💖 We have a few people on our shopping list who'll receive something music related this year. My son is a big fan of neo-classical metal (e.g., Nightwish, Sabaton, Battle Beast, etc.) and video game soundtracks. He's getting one vinyl record in each genre. My sister-in-law and brother-in-law will receive a gift certificate for Acoustic Sounds. Though I may not agree with some of the album titles you picked, they're really a matter of personal preference, so there's nothing to argue. 😜Your recommendation of The Doors 45 rpm titles is an excellent recommendation. 👍👍👍 Most of what you showed should make any music or vinyl enthusiast happy. That Christmas album compilation looks like a lot of fun. Too bad they didn't include a song from the Carpenters; I particularly like their Merry Christmas Darling song.😻 My Christmas album purchase for this year is the RSD Beach Boys Christmas album on green vinyl. Looking forward to hearing a clean copy of that album. For clothing, I'd also suggest buying a music enthusiast a musical instrument company shirt. Paul Reed Smith (PRS) Guitars and Fender Guitars are particular favorites of mine. ❤

I just listened to the Beach Boys Christmas album last night. I found a mono first pressing 5 years ago at an antique store. The RSD version looks very cool and probably sounds very good.

Sure, you're welcome, M. I agree with you on the Carpenters, just beautiful and some of my favorite music. I have an analogue era (maybe first?) pressing of the Beach Boys Christmas album, but it's in VG condition. It's not a bad listen, but I wanted a festive, clean copy. Upon your recommendation, I also got the Elemental RSD John Lee Hooker Live at the Cafe Au Go Go album. The only albums by The Doors I don't really care for are the ones The Doors made after Jim passed away. As we know, The Doors just couldn't recover from losing Jim. You take care too and enjoy the Christmas season. ✝ I'll see you on your next video (the flip side). 👍💖🎸😎@@MelindaMurphy

One great thing about records is that we can share opinions, like one can think that the US version of Seargeant Pepper Hearts Club Band doesnt have great sound. & that another one can believe that the original Nirvana lacks in good sound, compared to the much superior remaster of Nirvana Nevermind. Dont we all like to express our different opinions of which remaster we like the best, if we all thought alike then there would be no need for discussions, thats why I enjoy youtube We dont know what every one likes in records, butt that what we love about each others forums to discuss wehat we like. That is mostly what record forums talk about with records. That is what record forums are all about, that we can freely share opinions of what we like, like look at other records on youtube, & listen to $10,000 record players on youtube, & talk about what kind of speakers they have, recommendations of stereo equipment.. When some record forums love to talk about cds & some dont. Some record forums ask for recommendations, like a playlist is a recommendation, that many forums say thanks for making a hard effort of sending them a playlist. Some record forums review stereo equipment. Some record forums agree to meet each other, & some dont want to at all. Its nice to be able to talk of any subject, isnt it. We are fans. the word fan is a short word for fana. I really enjoy this forum.

Hi Melinda, I have really enjoyed the last few videos which you have made and this is no exception.
This is a very positive set of recommendations and I think
It would also be helpful to discuss the records which should be best avoided. Over the past year I have bought a large number of brand new records which have been really awful. The pressings have been unlistenable and vastly inferior to CD playback, which has been hugely disappointing.
I would mention three in particular, but there are many more.
“The Hissing of Summer Lawns “- Joni Mitchell is a superb collection of songs but the 180g pressings are harsh and cut too ‘hot’.
Dreamers Are Waiting” is a lovely album by Crowded House but the blue vinyl LP sounds like a joke compared to the CD. Terrible.
“The Universal Want” by Doves, “Chronicles of a Diamond” by Black Pumas and Biffy Clyro’s most recent album also suffer from bad mastering/cutting/pressing . Really lo-fi harsh, overly compressed sounds. It is as if the manufacture of mainstream vinyl has become something of a lost art!
One of the best sounding new releases was the Amber Mark album I mentioned “Three Dimensions Deep”.
The best sounding pre-owned vinyl LP I bought was “Lite Me Up!” by Herbie Hancock. It is superb, funky jazz-soul music, with a touch of dance thrown in the mix. Really refreshing and a near mint, first pressing.
Have you had any real bummers, pressings wise?
What have been the ones that have been neck pricklingly good?
    All the best!

Well, I can't see parents or what have you buying an $80 or even a $50 record for one of their offspring or what have you.
Personally, I do not observe the holidays. They represent violence, hypocrisy and other terrible things to me. I also have an affliction that makes me hyper-sensitive to a certain frequency range that gives me migraines, which doesn't help, I'm sure. It so happens that 99% of "xmas music" ( I have trouble calling it "music") contains said frequency range both prominent and subliminal. I notice this year is especially harsh for me. Normally it takes about 20 to 25 minutes of exposure for me to get sick. I made the mistake if going grocery shopping this past weekend without my "ear protection" and got sick within 2 minutes and had to go home without completing my shopping. The store was playing the stuff so loud (to me) that a jet engine would have been a whisper, so I think that was another contributing factor. I have "active ear protection" suggested by a doctor in the UK to me. I had to see a UK doctor because there are more who have my condition there and they are more familiar with it than in the US. There are others who have it here, but the health industry won't address it. I also can't listen to violin solos as it has the same effect. I have nothing against violin, but......

@@MelindaMurphy Yes, that is true, but I have the frequency canceling device I wear. It cancels out the offending frequencies to put it simply. I guess it kind of works like noise canceling. I got the device from the UK about 5 years ago. Such things are not available in the US for some reason. It does the job pretty well. Though if they are playing the music too loud it kind of struggles, but still prevents me from getting debilitating headaches. I have extremely good hearing for my age (I took care of my ears and now they overcompensate for my poor vision). Unfortunately, that comes with frequency sensitivity.

    • @ericelliott227
      @ericelliott227 6 місяців тому

@@audiophileman7047 Well, I disagree and personally, I don't need it. Religion only begets more violence, hypocrisy and other terrible things. If Xmas was real and grounded in ancient tradition (not merely 100 years old) and not corporate greed and religion and just a celebration of normal good behavior, peace, gathering with friends throughout the years and such, it would be far different. Sadly, the fact is that Xmas is only about 100 years old and an invention of corporate greed and retailers mixed with government religion as if that makes it ok. If folks want to celebrate it, fine, they can do that in their own privacy, but everyone forcing it on everyone else is the problem. Enough on that for now.
My hearing is otherwise exceptional for my age, it is just frequency sensitivity, there is no treatment, it is not a disease or anything like tinnitus or what have you, it doesn't go away or come on once per year. It is merely a matter of using the correct solution, which in this case is my frequency canceling device. I like Vivaldi and such, but I have to be careful and not listen to anything with long solo violin. I also have always been careful with volume regardless. I have found that the louder the volume of any music, the less detailed it is. I used to cover audio shows and would have to skip some rooms because they play too loud thinking that is what makes a great system. (Most audiophiles tend to be idiots). It is the subliminal frequencies that are the real hard problem, but canceling out third and fourth harmonics minimizes effects. As for the future of my hearing? I'm sure it will decline just like anyone else. I just don't know when, perhaps in the next 8 to 10 years?
