Nobody actually wants a massive truck, they are fun to mess about with, but it isn't at all practical. I can't even park my hilux properly in most places. And also nobody is gonna spend 200k Australian dollars on one of those. I'd rather have 4 hiluxs for that kinda money.

The term "F-truck" sounds so odd to me. I work with these trucks daily and we usually refer to them by their model like 250 or 350 etc. Example "Are you taking the 250 or the 350 today?"
Or we'll refer to them by the weight designation. Example "Are you taking the three quarter or the one ton?"

Good segment - I've got a similar F250 to the one you've tested, and I've taken it most places in Aus (Simpson, Cape, Fraser, Tassie etc.), and it did quite a bit off off-road in North America including Mexico and Alaska prior to converting it to RHD and shipping it over. I've also driven a 200 and a 76 quite a bit. Your summary is pretty good. Off-road it's actually genuinely really good and would surprise a lot of people (you just have to not care about your paint too much 😂), just they wallow quite a bit due to their wide track - but they offer a lot of stability as a result. Performance, comfort etc. not much competes (I would easily take it over a 200), and I've not driven anything else now for 10+ years so dailying it in the city isn't too much of a problem (yes, underground carparks you might have to miss). Parts aren't so much a problem as you can pre-order, and stuff like filters are on shelves in more places than you might imagine, and in many cases you might find they are cheaper than equivelant parts for a Cruiser. The fundamental mechanicals (engine, transmission and diffs) in this generation and the newer generation F-trucks are really stout as well too, and it's not let me down over 180k of very hard km. Lastly, the package, while they start a lot more expensive than a 79, when you start extending the chassis, fixing the wheel track, auto conversion, you aren't far off the cost, and you haven't got a 10 speed trans, 6.7l engine, or the big benefit, a cabin that big.
    The big downsides however are:
Finding knowledgable people to work on them in Aus, they exist, but the best bloke near me is 1.5hrs drive away and I live in Melbourne, not around the corner like you might find for a Cruiser (or Patrol, or other ute).
Accessory market is different for them, stuff like suspension or gooseneck trailer hitches... you can chose from 5,000 options, but a snorkel, yeah good luck.
Lastly, while the fundamental mechanicals are really stout, the use of them in North America is different to outback touring - I've destroyed 3 sets of front hubs from drawing water in some low level water crossings, bent the battery trays etc. from corrugations.

second this. I've got an imported HZJ77 and recently purchased my 2014 F250 (worth noting i chose the F250 over a 2016+ 200 Series. Objectively the F250 is better for my needs.) If I'm going out camping with just my kid(s) or wife, the 77 is the truck of choice. If I'm going out with the whole family, (wife, 2 kids, 2 dogs) the F250 is the ticket. If I absolutely must survive, Cruiser all day every day.

HUBS on truck. I agree with that . We switched them out with WARN s. That's about the only weakness . We just drive the factory ones as normal . Then replace them with WARN s when they start clicking. You can just keep the stock ones locked in all the time. The WARNS are superior. And they do last. All metal. That's the upgrade almost everyone does .

I have a F250 as my daily driver. its is a bit modified on 6 inch lift and 37 tires. But I have no issue driving it around town or on my monthly 1100 mile round trip work commute. If you pluck out the DPF and EGR, and a couple of other bits, it is a very reliable engine / setup and you get a bunch more torque and horsepower out of it when you let it breathe

American here. We have a lot less choice in off-road vehicles and diesels are much harder to find/afford. While the "American" vehicles are less common for you they are available to you; many of the rigs that you enjoy are simply not available here. While the large American trucks are nice they are also too large for many tracks which is why I chose the smaller and more capable Jeep Gladiator. If I had to choose between the two trucks that you tested I would choose the 79 because of its novelty in the states but mostly because of its smaller size. My truck/ute is intended and built to drive offroad and I don't want size/weight impeding that. I would love to see you all do a similar comparison against a Jeep Gladiator as I dream of shipping mine to Aus and taking on some of the tracks that you have embedded into my mind. @@archygrey9093 For the most part, long range touring isn't really a thing in the US (at least that's my perception from Southern California). There are a ton of F-250s as well as other full size trucks from Dodge and Chevy, but usually they are relegated to towing the off-road toys more than being the off-road toys themselves.
We call anything larger than a Tacoma (Hilux) a full size truck and when you do see them on the trails it's usually as part of a specific event for them ("Full Size Invasion").
Most of the interesting trails near me are short one day trips better suited to smaller more agile vehicles, and because you aren't generally camping on these trails there's no need for the extra room and comfort of a full size.

In the US, the F250 is rated to tow much more than 4500kg (9920 lbs), up to 6,800 kg (15,000 lbs), depending on configuration. If fifth wheel towing, it goes up to 9,000 kg (20,000 lbs). I wonder why it is so underrated in Australia.

To see an F250 driving through downtown Phoenix is so common you don't even think about it. I've owned an F250 and an F350 both with V10 gas motors. They were each my daily driving rig. Off-road they are beasts! Slap a set of 35" or 37" tires on them and they are super hard to get stuck: mud, rock, snow, sand you name it they can do it (except for tight spaces). On the other hand to see a LC70 in the USA is like seeing an F250 in Australia. Basically, I think you get used to what you drive.

On the other hand for a family just going on an overland holiday I guess the beast wins. For what you guys, Shauno, Graham and the boys do, stick to the smaller rigs.

Then you have the extra size, power and torque of the larger engines, and they suddenly ARE a MUCH better proposition at prices against the modified Toyotas.
Also, from what I have seen and heard, (no, I do not have first-hand knowledge on this) the 79 series cruiser is screaming that diesel motor at over 3500rpm at highway speeds in top gear,(yes, without a trailer), whilst the ‘American’ ‘trucks’ are just simply humming along at low revs like a diesel should.

Older models are starting to be imported but parts could be an issue and they’re right hand drive. So unless we go with a full size truck we are stuck with gas and limited torque. Such a fun vid, love getting the perspective of people from other countries on our beloved American trucks. I wheel and camp with an F150 Raptor (not the Ranger, the 86" wide one). Similar to the F250 wheeled in the vid, it might surprise many by being more versatile than you'd think. Tows a 20+ foot travel trailer like it's not even there. SUPER comfortable on long trips and the massive cab lets everyone including the kids and dogs have plenty of space to ride. Offroad the long wheelbase gives mega traction uphill, better than my FJC or 4runner ever had. The downside is tight corners or getting hung up due to poor breakover angle. And anything where weight matters. Also the power cannot be talked about enough. I drove 2 different 200 series land cruisers with the 5.7 back to back with the Raptor. The mighty LC200 is like a snail by comparison. Glad you showed the city driving as well. I live in a small town with big roads, but I drove the truck to San Francisco and it's hilariously big for narrow streets and pretty stressful to drive and park.

It also reminded me that, as someone who uses an 8'2" wide dually as my daily driver almost exclusively on surface roads here in Richmond VA USA, which is terribly unfriendly to larger vehicles (looking at you Jocko!) your ability to control your vehicle has less to do with your driving technique or even what you drive, but it winds up being how comfortable you are with whatever you have at your disposal. I have 570,xxx MILES on my 1997 12v Cummins powered Dodge and can parallel park it like a Honda civic that's 20ft long. Ford trucks are very very tricky to do maintenance and mechanical work and they are made to carry lots of tools and equipment. Land Cruiser on the other hand are extremely friendly to service and do mechanical work, they are lighter trucks and Reliable. Also once you get stuck in the bush or off-roading the lighter vehicle wins just because is easier to pull. Just imagine the F250 stuck into a river or worst into a Bog Hole. @@einfelder8262 Bt-50 had similar amount and could get up a range with a 2 + tonne trailer in 4th gear mate with ease. The Cruiser made it a lot easier than the Bt-50 too. I later got mine tuned because I will agree stock figures are severely wound down. Sucks that you must get a tune to see any “real” power from the V8. But still enough to slam 2 tonne up a hill

Really dig this video and definitely nice to see what you guys do with an American pickup that's been setup for Aussie trails, I like the fact that you guys use a lot of Toyotas to compare with.

Just as well both comes with a RTT, as there won't be anything left in the budget for accommodation, once you factor in the fuel bill.😁

"It's like the car has so much power that is spins the Earth in the opposite direction." That was an awesome line.
I always wondered how a full size truck would do against the elongated toyotas and such with the diesels in them. Obviously the departure angles are better for the Toyo's off the gate as well as the turning circle. And they are narrow.
But all that power. I know from experience how it feels to tow with a truck like that as well as ones smaller.
Now...longetivity. Me personally...I will never...ever...ever buy a Ford or GM truck and my view of Dodge is getting worse as well. And until this point I had nothing but Dodge's for 30+ years (since my first truck that I got at 16). Their electrical systems are really bad and they use cheaper parts to try to keep the cost down...in particular the bearings.
And the petrol engines in the smaller trucks (the EcoBoost) have horrible reputations. A guy I know loves the Ford diesels...but he's had to have his rebuilt twice since I've known him. The Duramax's have a pretty good reputation, but they are wrapped by the Chevy externals.
And lastly, whoever did that canopy, why the heck didn't they install a backup camera. There's no excuse for not having it. And then adding a forward looking camera. For all that money, it would be a must.

I freakin love this episode. I've got a '91 HZJ77 and a '14 F250 Platinum. 10/10 can confirm the F250 is much better truck for a big family.

Should really have put both on a weighbridge to get an accurate assessment. You didn't put the tape across the canopies - while they are the same length, the width of the F250 canopy would be interesting to see, and how much more can it accommodate. Finally, towing with these big rigs should be with a 3.5 ton caravan for touring, not a family 2.5 ton unit that you could tow with a Triton!
    Thanks.

@@larsbee at 250k spent on touring vehicles, the fords already got a 140ish litre and the 79 has 110 stock. Probably safe to say these both got long range tanks. F250 can do 295ltr replacement and the 79 can do 240ltr. Fuel consumption? Who cares, no one spending 250k cares about the fuel prices.
