      Are you trying to start a fire with that paper towel that is grease soaked next to.a flame on a gas range? Recipe looks great but very unsafe practices to be showing potential newer cooks. I see no fire retardant items anywhere near your stove. I'm not trying to insult you at all, just don't want to see you get burned badly. Please check with your local fire department if any questions or doubt.

    A few years back, I got this recipe from a friend of mine because I thought her beans were so tasty. She called them "Old Fashioned Settler's Beans". One other ingredient in her recipe is liquid smoke. And, I believe, instead of northern beans, she uses lima beans. Yep, these beans do not disappoint.

    I've never heard of these, but I love baked beans and butter beans, so I know I'll love these! My husband says he doesn't like butter beans or Limas, but I doubt that he's ever had real down home cooking like Mama's! Butter beans were, I think, my mama's favorite thing to eat. She'd have beans at least once or twice a week, often She'd eat them instead of the meal She'd make for the rest of the family. I miss my mama 😢

      My husband hates them, probably because his dad made him eat cold butter beans left over, straight out of the fridge. He will eat them when I out them in my homemade vegetable soup, which he loves. But he won't even try them any other way.

      @@tarabooartarmy3654 I adore beans, but I'm not sure how I'd feel about cold ones. I guess if baked beans are OK cold, then perhaps it'd be worthwhile to try them....nahhh.
      We went to a church social on Sunday, and there was a big pot full of great northerns and a large dish of baked beans, along with many other things. But I stuffed myself with beans! They were so satisfying. Oh my, did I pay for that yesterday, lol. It was well worth it, though! 😁

      I thoroughly detest Lima and butter beans. Don’t assume when an adult states that they dis like something that they will like it when you cook it “ your way”. Doing this is a form of bullying. It is OK to not like certain things and for someone to attempt to show you that you are “ wrong” for this dislike is not acceptable.

    • @tarabooartarmy3654
      @tarabooartarmy3654 2 місяці тому +4

      @@virginialangford6257 whoa there… bullying? Are we so far gone as a society that we think something so benign and completely harmless is bullying? Come on. It’s not even a mild form of bullying. Most people who say things like this are trying to be helpful because they truly believe you’ll enjoy their version and they’re excited to see you try it. They have no ill will whatsoever, so it’s not even akin to bullying in any way.
      I get it. You personally feel attacked when someone tries to talk you into eating something you don’t like. But don’t try to apply that generally just because you feel that way personally.

    I am from western Washington state. This dish was a must for all picnics, BBQs, and summer gatherings in my mom's family. We called it "Bean Supreme" and our assortment of beans included: Lima beans, kidney beans, pork and beans, black-eyed peas. Our dish had 1 pound of burger along with the 1/2 pound of bacon. No BBQ sauce but optional dash of Liquid Smoke.

    I didn’t mind my grandchildren not liking something I cooked but didn’t let them say that they didn’t like it. They had to say “ it’s not my favorite food right now”! My one granddaughter became a professional chef with a six year culinary degree. She is so thankful how adventurous my attitude was about her giving different foods a try. My other granddaughter loved my attitude towards her trying foods she became a cheerleader and beauty queen eating vegetables and loving food quest and thinking the world of food is such fun. I’m so glad our parents cared about us enough to know what was good for us when we didn’t. I had a great mom to be thankful for. Attitude starts in the heart. Thank you for these great recipes. I’m new to channel. From Louisiana.

    Oh boy Tammy! I have not made these since I was first married way back in the early 70s! What a blast from the past. I have heard them called Calico Beans because of the different bean colors, but I believe when I was making it we just called them Western Beans. I also added ground beef. I have a totally different recipe that I call Cowboy Beans. I love your name for this, Old Settlers Beans 😀 I used Green Limas instead of butter bean limas, also Great Northern, Pinto, and Black Beans because I really dislike kidney beans. I added all the rest the same as you, except I did not use barbecue sauce. I typically used Woody's Cookin' Sauce when a recipe required barbecue sauce, but now that I am in Michigan, I cannot get it. I love that stuff!

And we can't forget the sweet ice tea... that's a flashback for sure!

    We make a similar recipe and call it Calico Beans. Ours has vinegar to balance out the brown sugar. We don't add the BBQ sauce or the cayenne/chili powder. We drain all the beans and bake for one hour. This dish is often at our family gatherings and one of our most requested.

      @@louiciousthewerewolf4819 Draining means straining to remove the liquid that comes in canned beans. This can be done right in the can carefully using the cracked lid or with a colander, cheesecloth, slotted spoon or any other straining method. Many like to rinse them with water after draining to reduce compounds that can contribute to intestinal gas. Just replace the drained liquid with water or broth if the recipe calls for it.

    When I’m browning ground meat, I work it on high until the water rendered from the meat is mostly gone as measured by the bubbles coming up through the grease as steam. And like you I use paper towels to soak up the grease but after I pull all the meat to the side I put a trivet under the meat side allowing a large amount of grease to drain into my paper towels.
