In this episode, Charles introduces us to the different abalone species along our coast, how to tell them apart and explains how human exploitation, paired with their unfortunate biology, has led to a catastrophic decline in their populations.
South African abalone, locally known as perlemoen, which translates to (mother of pearl), are recognized by their single shell and large muscular feet; in areas where they used to thrive, spotting a large one alive is rare.
